Another amusing anecdote was when I was sweeping the air for radio disturbances and found this very strong 390MHz signal in the neighborhood near the office. Wth this strong a signal can't be legal I thought and looked up what belonged on that band. Then found out it's what the Swedish police communication system is using. And sure enough some guys were sitting in an inconspicuous Volvo a few blocks away. Some cops doing a stakeout or something :) Good thing I didn't call the police on them :)
Folks, I want to find a balun, which can work across the range of frequencies between 250kHz and 30MHz. Small signals, not a power balun. Do you think it's plausible?
@MikeWaters There is a small but definite overlap between Space SE and Ham SE. Matter Modeling SE has a What's going on elsewhere room for related questions that may be of interest. I get the idea that this community isn't very active in chat, I wish there were another way that users in one SE site could be "made aware of" questions in a different site that may be of interest.
"HAM RADIO SIGNALS FROM MARS: Ham radio operators are doing something that until recently only big Deep Space Networks could do. They're listening to radio signals from Mars. The "loud and audible" transmissions come from spacecraft orbiting the Red Planet. Some hams are hoping to detect NASA's Perseverance rover as it touches down later this week. Find out how it's done on today's edition of Spaceweather.com."
Amateur Radio SE is going to need a few moderators to help steer the site during the beta phase until the site graduates and an election can be held. We're looking for folks that have a little bit of time to give and are interested in stepping up into leadership roles within this community.

@MikeWaters Yes. Eactly. I encourage use of chat in lieu of comments. Some questions need a fair amount of back&forth dialog before they can be answered. The question&answer format of SE isn't great for dialog. Comments support dialog somewhat, but chat is much better.
If the question was too broad, we encourage the O.P. to break it up or to narrow it down in chat. If the question is unclear, we encourage the O.P. to have it clarified in chat.
and in other news I found out I could barely hit a repeater 19.6 miles away with 5 watts and a 16" comet.. I personally thought that was pretty decent.
Morse code is a specific way of interrupting a carrier or a current flow. Hams utilize International Morse code.
There are other ways to interrupt the carrier to send information. During WW II the Japanese had their own code, for instance.
Then there are the railroads, which used to have ...

It was kind of funny. We had a tent set up, and it started raining. We had the foot pedal on a piece of carpet, but the rain found it's way in to the tent, and eventually got the foot pedal wet. That moment was right as Field Day started... Sigh.
