I'd like to make it clear for the record: I wanted to keep comments voicing different opinions just so I could get various suggestions and how the community likes those suggestions.

But the argument is the other way around, cops don't object to "cops." Lots of Trump supporters seized on H. Clinton's use of "deplorable" and call themselves "deplorables" all the time. Linguistically, they're still reclaiming the word and that process would need to be discussed in any analysis, even though they, as a group have the political power and also suck.

@AIQ - I have the feeling that those finishing thoughts harmed an otherwise excellent and thorough answer, placing it into a cloud of political rhetoric that, although very fashionable these days, decreases its value rather than adding to it (and, actually, I have even stronger an opinion about it but that wouldn't fit into ELL instead of Politics :-) ). At any rate, I felt it unwarranted.
