Are and the same?
Oct 18, 2013 17:18
Just curoius are the down votes on pets.stackexchange.com/questions/767/… becuase it is believed to be in accurate or because there is room for more detail?
Oct 18, 2013 15:50
@Skippy No idea why its still being downvoted, but don't worry about visibility. You can't rely on proximity to the front page, especially for duplicates.
Oct 18, 2013 15:01
@Skippy nope, we'll just close your chat message as a duplicate, for search optimization ;)
Oct 18, 2013 14:07
it also definitely lacks "pizzazz" (which is not something I think a chat room name actually needs, but hey, everyone's different)

Q: Are we missing anything to end the Private Beta?

James JenkinsWe are about a week into Private Beta, and seem to be doing great. Is there anything in particular we need to focus on addressing to get ready for public Beta?

Oct 18, 2013 14:06
(see Robert's answer)
Oct 18, 2013 11:47
It's certainly a topic of interest on the site, but I don't know enough to ask in-depth questions about it.
Oct 18, 2013 11:40
@Baarn Yes, I would say go ahead and post them on CogSci. If you don't find a lot of luck in terms of answers (as there's not a segment of experts in that area yet), I have posted a few agent-based questions to Computer Science, and you could try there.
Oct 18, 2013 06:45
@Skippy people have weird phobias....so we can accept yours ;)
Oct 18, 2013 00:34
So there is an unaccept answers new style going around?

I suspect the name of the room, like other things will not please everyone no matter what we pick
Oct 17, 2013 19:43
@Beofett Ask 100 kids what animal uses a litter box... how many you think answer cats

Like I have an instinctive dislike for identify my X questions but that comes from my activeness on Arqade where we have dealt with identify-this-game bringing in crap content
Oct 17, 2013 15:19
@JohnB We do not have a lot of needs here that they will be able to address. The mods are not going to be here leading the charge they are going to deal with people breaking the rules but unless you are making personal attacks they are not able to do much. Trust me we lost some good mods on The Workplace because they could not do anything about someone gaming the rules
Oct 17, 2013 15:16
@Chad I was referring to what Skippy was talking about: talking with individual users in private to discuss potential issues
Oct 17, 2013 15:16
we don't have a platform to do that, until then
Oct 17, 2013 14:25
@Baarn Not every user is willing to, or even capable, of using our chat system.

If we can source things and edit them in (even if the whole answer remains a blockquote), it is better than not having a source in there at all.
Oct 17, 2013 14:20
@Skippy I edited the post to make it clear that the entire answer is a copy and paste. I think this makes for a helpful warning sign to future viewers.
Oct 17, 2013 14:18
And instead of crying plagerism the better thing to do is edit the post and quote and cite what is needed.
Oct 17, 2013 14:18
@Skippy @Precious had some posts that plagiarized content, we informed him about this and since he has bettered his behavior. (adding links and quotes) If you are unhappy with the content, you could've done it like @Beofett did and simply edit the post.
Oct 17, 2013 14:16
@Skippy You can stop it any time by not participating... you are the one insisting on continuing the conversation while trying to make your point
Oct 17, 2013 14:15
It is counterproductive to discuss every single plagiarism, downvote and close vote on the site…
user15026
Oct 17, 2013 14:14
@Skippy Not really, no
user15026
Oct 17, 2013 14:14
We are having a conversation, yes, about a problem.
user15026
Oct 17, 2013 14:13
@Skippy It does, but remember, it is not our job to police content necessarily, as I mentioned in my image sourcing answer. While it would be super cool if we could fix every single plagiarism answer in the history of the site now and going forward, sometimes there needs to be other things done to stem it, like alerting a moderator or the like.

Oct 17, 2013 14:11
I don't want to see plagiarism and other signs of bad answers, but I am an eternal optimist and feel like anyone has the ability to change and improve, and really, hurting someone's feelings isn't cool.

Q: Human medications on pets

SkippyI asked this: Is it safe for me to use human medication on my pet? I realize now, this may be too broad. I suggest closing it, but it can be used to link to the other species specific questions. Can I give human medicine to chickens? Can I use human medicine on dogs? Can I give my cat human me...

Oct 17, 2013 10:08
And there is even a meta discussion on that one specifically, please contribute to it.
Oct 17, 2013 10:07
Read the box below the question: "put on hold as too broad"

Q: Can I use human medicine on dogs?

Ankit SharmaSometimes our doctor advises us to use to use human medicines for dogs. For example, when my sister's Labrador was small, the doctor advised us to administer children's syrup for stomach disorder. Is this good advice or should we ignore it?

Oct 17, 2013 03:04
I am unaccepting most of the accepted answer to my questions, had a rethink after discussion here, it would be better to leave them open to encourage more answer. Sorry for loss in rep, I'm sure to more than make up for it with upvotes cheers. Wnated to post this here, as sure someone will make a psot about it
Oct 16, 2013 18:25
Ah, sorry… Robert Cartaino wrote on meta:
"Just a brief administrative note:

We typically do our private beta evaluation just about now, but the entire Community Team is in New York this week for a Summit meeting. The site seems to be doing well overall, but the evaluations and related activities are being deferred until next week when we return."

@PreciousTijesunimi I meant if YOU post a picture of your dog
Oct 16, 2013 17:55
@Chad Where is the picture. Pls give me a link
Oct 16, 2013 17:44
@PreciousTijesunimi lol sorry that is internent slang sometimes you will see IMHO (in my humble opinion) which i find pretentions because if you have to say it is a humble opinion then it obviously is not
Oct 16, 2013 17:42
@Chad What does IMO mean?
Oct 16, 2013 17:31
@PreciousTijesunimi I get that you are trying to help, but the question is do you have the expertise to give the advice? Or are you just giving a suggestion that you think might help? If you can not explain why your answer is correct authoritatively you should consider not answering. If you can then you should fully explain your answer so that it can help future visitors as well as the current poster.
Oct 16, 2013 17:24
@Baarn We will get that. There are millions of people with expert level experience in Pets. Mine is focused on rabbits, and while I have a few other animal interests I can not answer authoritively on Dogs or cats as many others.
Oct 16, 2013 17:17
@Baarn I am of the opinion to be liberal in the questions we accept but conservative in the answers we tolerate. In other words give questions the benefit of the doubt but answers should be of high quality.
Oct 16, 2013 17:04
@Skippy please tell me this is not an actual problem you have:
Oct 16, 2013 17:00
@Beofett Here is the thing I am not going to take a wild chameleon that my cat caught to the vet. Even if it is a pet I am not taking it to the vet. I could buy 20 new ones for the cost of walking into the door at the vets office.
Oct 16, 2013 16:15
@Skippy Agreed. I downvoted and commented on the one answer.
Oct 16, 2013 16:09
Quite frankly, I am not happy with some of the advice I'm seeing here. There are too many comments and answers being posted by people without expertise. sigh
Oct 16, 2013 15:10
I think in private betas, its okay to be a little more lax about that, as it is a formative period where feedback is very important, and in general most sites are fairly permissive (to varying degrees), but as far as a reason for not explaining downvotes, that certainly makes sense
Oct 16, 2013 15:07
@Chad That's a very good point regarding the intent of comments. Comments really should only be used to improve a question/answer, or provide a warning if there is something objectively wrong with it.
Oct 16, 2013 15:02
I think a good reason to downvote Ankits questions and answers is the lack of proper grammar. While he might not be fluent, a downvote also might carry the message of: "I don't think this kind of language is appropriate for an expert site, please edit"
Oct 16, 2013 15:00
@woliveirajr Yeah, ones like that I find hard to justify, but there's one fundamental rule to the stackexchange platform that takes a lot of getting used to: people can vote however they want, for whatever reason they want.
