@Tyberius sorry for taking so long to respond; yes, there have been issues with Sloshy and I haven't had the time to investigate, but I hope to try to sort it out now
Mar 20 11:55
@Tyberius the GitHub issue says that tripleee is too busy right now and that we may have to express condolences to Sloshy. Perhaps we will need to use a different bot, which will probably be less convenient to configure.
Mar 19 17:17
@user1271772 It looks like Sloshy might be down for all of StackExchange (though Stackoverflow chat is apparently okay). github.com/tripleee/sloshy/issues/116

I'll ask a mod to re-open our Ask a moderator room, which is usually where we'd ping mods. I'll also ask to re-open Bounty Land, HNQ, Milestones and GPAW.

@tripleee thanks! I have a baby's birth expected today, so I have my attention elsewhere, but will try to reply later (-:

I agree that people can just walk away and let that happen, but I didn't spend so much time building MMSE just to see it die within 4 years! In fact, I'm just getting started!

Speaking as someone with two MSc and one PhD in quantum chemistry, my advice is to seriously consider why you want to get a PhD. If you know that research is what you live for, and you know that you have it in you to succeed in academia, then a PhD is the first step towards an academic career. If, however, you have doubts as to whether you want to give up your free time or give up on having a family, or if you are not sure that doing research is what you want, then a PhD might not be correct.

Q: MMSE Community Promotion Board

TyberiusTaking the suggestion from Geoff Hutchison in Highlighting Matsci.org forum - community promotions, I decided to put together an MMSE page for community ads. Simply add an answer with a title, a brief description, and a link to whatever project your advertising (and ideally an image to go with th...

context: for a long long time I have thought that something like an "Optics and Photonics SE" site would work. We can talk later about why Physics SE is not working for this subject, I just want to have a very concise summary of the main steps and how hard it is to build the interest.

Q: The MMSE Sandbox

Nike DattaniSimilar to this sandbox, you're encouraged to write drafts of your questions here before posting them on the main site, if you think this may be beneficial. I was tempted to come up with a set of "rules" for this, or to simply say "don't over use this", but my guess is that this won't be necessar...

@NikeDattani I know you do, you've put so much effort into it. It is rare to see someone with that much enthusiasm

Q: How to get email notifications when questions are asked about your favorite software or favorite topic

Nike DattaniMy friend Peter Nagy, a developer of the MRCC software, asked me how to get email notifications when people ask questions with the mrcc tag. Surprisingly I could not remember how I did it years ago when I started following certain tags on other Stack Exchanges, and I couldn't find the answer eas...

So people can continue asking molecular questions on ChemSE, or if for some reason they prefer, they could ask here. In either case a migration can be done if necessary, but I don't think there's any way to force the askers to choose one or the other, Rory's comment says that the focus has always been on giving the asker the option to make their own choice.

@user1271772 @user1271772 Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to respond to this message until recently. I found this site by googling my answers, typically using the search style "quantum espresso: <question or keywords>". Previously, I had been using Research Gate to ask and find answers to my questions, but Research Gate isn't really the type of coherent focused community that would be best to engage with for these technical questions.

I appreciate this community. I'm not sure who's running it, but it's great that it exists. I ran into it because I was looking for DFT advice, but I'm glad to see it's a broader community

I had a CS minor in undergrad, but I wouldn't necessarily call that a CS background.

Feel free to add notes (e.g., additional clarifying question/comments) here. I am going to return to this page later the day.
Aug 31, 2021 20:34
There is a lot of overlap between the sites. I say yes because calculating distributions are very important in matter modeling. However, a better question to ask on this site is "how" to calculate something, rather than asking about some theoretical detail (which could be asked on physics SE.)

Now while the title of that paper says it involves "fast computing machines", it was the 1950s and HPC (high performance computing) was different then that it is now. If you want a more recent reference, this is a paper in which Monte Carlo is used for a matter modeling problem in a truly HPC sense (more than 24000 CPU cores were used!): aip.scitation.org/doi/full/10.1063/5.0005754

@NikeDattani I see. I wonder if they targeted your comments of the sort "+1 We hope to see you more here!!" as they are numerous. Strictly speaking they can be removed, but I find it in poor taste to flag for mass deletion especially from someone with no content contribution to the site.

Ooh Windows subsystem for linux has a new version WSL2! "WSL 2 is a major upgrade over the original version of WSL Microsoft introduced back in 2017. WSL 2 isn’t just a version bump, either. It’s faster, more versatile, and uses a real Linux kernel. Future Linux kernel updates will be released as Windows 10 software updates — which is kinda crazy when you think about it!"

I mean the early users could get 200 points in a day just from one question, but now it's a lot harder to earn rep, which I think is a bit unfair for the new users.
Jul 13, 2020 22:25
@TheSimpliFire, @StephenXie, @TAR86 don't forget to try to vote a bit more if you don't mind! We were predicted to have 152 users with 200+ rep by the end of 90 days in Beta, but that has now dropped to 148 users. This is ranked as "okay" instead of "excellent". I am just trying to encourage a bit more voting in general, not to downvote or upvote any specific question :)
Jul 5, 2020 17:34
I voted to close this, and wrote a long comment about the reason for it. It can easily be re-opened if the user comes back (but they haven't signed in even once since the day they joined) or if someone writes a comment saying that they want to answer:

So far 77 caucus and 54 constituent badges. (Maybe election is useful also as some kind of measure of number of active users on a site.)
Jun 22, 2020 02:14
This seems to be the most successful Hot Network Question we've ever had! I think it's rare for them to last more than 50 hours, and to attract such a large number of new users! Thank you to everyone that voted for the question and the answer, and if you have anything to add, then don't hesitate to add another answer! There would be no better time than now. Don't hesitate to spread the word about this question to anyone you know that might be interested!

Q: Did the 2019 discovery of O(N log(N)) multiplication have a practical outcome?

ksousaSome time ago I've read this news article, Mathematicians Discover the Perfect Way to Multiply, reporting a discovery published in 2019, where Harvey and Hoeven[1] found a algorithm able to execute multiplication in $N \log N$ steps. Compare with the $N^2$ we are used to while doing multiplicati...

@NikeDattani oh no need to apologize; it is always good question hygiene to refer to and distinguish from existing questions and answers. It's always good to cite related material but more importantly it's possible others won't read before commenting similarly.
