Okay.... So Sin just did a little in-place shadowjump.
"'Wot's that? You're one of us?"
Sin's heart races as she reappears. She hates having her secret discovered.
"Us?" The word raises Sin's hackles. The man... taps the tabletop, and the shadows flicker out of proportion to the tap.
Then he smiles. "Us.
Now, Kirby, you're running from a dragon and hoping it won't follow.
yep
I am guessing I run into this cave
probably by accident
Well, the cave is partway up a cliff.

Jun 3, 2013 12:20
Maybe he runs off the cliff and falls in the pool? ;)
lol
I hope not, if it's the pool that was in last session
Cat
Cat
this one seemed harmless enough when I passed it
Fair enough.
the pool I mean might look harmless,... but it depends how close you got I guess
Cat
Cat
Hmmm.well, I can't provide much info there. I think my pool had fish.
Jun 3, 2013 12:22
there was a lion guarding the one I mean, and touching this pool would effectively kill you
Cat
Cat
Oh, I saw no lion :)
Kirby, you're running through the Forest and then the ground suddenly stops. I believe this is a defensive roll vs. +4 as you fall.
As you're running, I hereby summarily ban Careful as a viable approach to this defense.
ah, I was expecting to need to think of something
I had an idea
My vision is that you fall off the cliff into the pool, as was suggested.
but I guess,... I will go with forceful
Jun 3, 2013 12:24
...well, maybe not into the pool if you roll poorly enough.

:O
i saw that
I think that's accurate, really.
the family curse
it hath claimed me
Cat
Cat
Sorry!!
Jun 3, 2013 12:25
That's, um.... -3 vs +5, I think.
not your fault
8 shifts.
goodness me
I see nothing I can invoke
in this situation
Cat
Cat
can you reroll?
I would need an invoke
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 12:26
(for a FP?)
(Sorry, I don't understand the system yet)
that's what invokes are for
@Cat Only if there's an aspect he can use to justify it.
know what
Without an aspect to invoke, spending an FP can only give a +1.
this is definitely a mess at least
I propose invoking my trouble
Jun 3, 2013 12:27
What does that look like?
How would you include it in narrating the event?
desperate scrabbling at the ledge to at least slow the fall
@Cat Do you accept that?
Cat
Cat
Me?
yeah
Cat
Cat
Sure ...
Jun 3, 2013 12:29
your part of the session
(whether aspects are appropriate to invoke is a group decision.)
Cat
Cat
Oh, okay.
(The GM is first among equals.)
Okay, so @trogdor is that a +2 or a re-roll?
lol
re roll
4d6
Jun 3, 2013 12:30
hahahahahahahahaha
Cat
Cat
better!
my personal luck is stronger than the family curse,... for now
+4 vs +5.
Cat
Cat
(don't jinx yourself)
yep
hey
sorry, but I already got a -4
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 12:31
lol
I can't jinx worse than that in FATE
I'm going to invoke Big Grey Rocks for a +2.
you hate me
Cat
Cat
Obviously ;)
You're a blind man running through the Enchanted Forest.
Jun 3, 2013 12:32
I invoke mossy ground for +2, breaking my fall
Mossy Ground is in the Forest, not the Clearing.
mm shallow pool then
Okay.
mr I manipulate
Deduct your FP.
Jun 3, 2013 12:33
mk
took 2 out
And take your 1 stress.
Cat
Cat
Sorry, what was the second FP for?
huh
?
@Cat He invoked Shallow Pool to get a +2 to the roll.
I invoked 2 different things
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 12:34
You said you took 2 out?
Now narrate the event.
Cat
Cat
Oh, ok
ok
should I narrate how the Rocks fit in too?
I think I didn't win this roll did I? am I still narrating?
Yes, everything that was used mechanically needs to show up.
You didn't win, no, but I'd like you to narrate it for the practice.
ah I wasn't taken out
mk, Kirby runs though the forest (like a blind idiot) and comes to a cliff.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 12:37
bathroom, brb
before he notices it, he is already starting to fall, he scrabbles at whatever he can, but he grabs some rocks, they are big enough to hold him, but they have no purchase, and he falls. luckily for him, he lands in the pool.
Cat
Cat
sigh
(of relief)
Cat
Cat
(for Kirby, of course)
well, I can't say I know that feeling as well as you then
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 12:39
Kirby can't swim?
so far the closest thing he has to relief is falling off a cliff instead of being eaten by a dragon
Cat
Cat
It is "shallow"
I'd call that progress ;)
never said he can't swim
being blind might not help though,I dunno
As Kirby flails in the pool, he hears someone give a shout of surprise.
Sindaria hears a shout-thud-splash-groan/splutter outside the cave, followed by a shout of surprise from someone else outside the cave.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 12:42
Huh?
Henry pauses, a look of surprise on his face: "Eh? Who's that, then?"
Cat
Cat
Sin has a second large startle response.
@Cat There is someone outside the cave, in the clearing, that nobody knew about until I said there was a shout of surprise.
Cat
Cat
She tries grabs one of her two daggers.
(assuming I'm allowed to have them)
It seems reasonable.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 12:44
OK. So now I have the aspect "armed" correct?
just daggers, I see no point in not letting you have some kinda weapon
you have to roll it if you want to make an aspect
Cat
Cat
OK, here goes nothing:
4d6
Okay, so you're going to "Create Advantage" by placing the "armed" aspect on yourself.
Cat
Cat
I'm trying to do it quickly
Jun 3, 2013 12:45
makes sense
especially as a response to being startled
So that's a -1, which would fail vs the target of 0.
No, sorry.
-1 +2 = +1. Success.
Cat
Cat
Why a -1?
OK, that makes sense
Yay! (that would be embarrassing)
also, don't I actually get a FP for that invoke against me after this scene
?
@trogdor Right.
Jun 3, 2013 12:46
Sin now has the "Armed" aspect (+1, Sin, tag x1).
Cat
Cat
which invoke?
but not yet, obv
Cat
Cat
(sorry, I'm slow following)
he invoked the rocks against me
Cat
Cat
OK
Jun 3, 2013 12:46
when I fell
@trogdor Actually you don't get it at all because it was a scene aspect.
If I'd invoked Blind then you'd get it.
Cat
Cat
:(
Jun 3, 2013 12:47
Argh.
Okay, the scene is very unclear.
pause.
Cat
Cat
Sure.
Halfway up the cliff is a cave.
I would assume this at least got paid out of the NPC pool then.
Kirby just came running off the top of the cliff, bounced off the rocks, and into the pool.
Someone is in or near the pool in the clearing, and was startled to see a blind man run full-tilt off the cliff.
The interior of the cave is inspired by this.
Henry is a nearly-blind old man who the cat (currently curled around the man's staff) thinks is a wizard, but who just told Sin that he's a shadowmage like herself.
Sindaria just grabbed for her daggers, giving herself the aspect Armed. It takes a roll of +1 to disarm her unless she actively rolls to defend against that instead, and she has 1 free invoke on the aspect.
I'm going to change the aspect to Dagger In Hand.
Cat
Cat
Sure
Jun 3, 2013 12:51
"Armed" is a little vague.
Cat
Cat
Yup
(Do you become an amputee if someone removes the aspect?)
Cat
Cat
:S
I hope not
that's one exspencive set of daggers
And now, it is Stellata's turn. @JonathanHobbs Please begin by describing yourself and your current situation.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 12:55
(as an aside, is there a limit to the number of tags I can have?)
Stellata's in the water. She's been sitting in there for a little while now, quite peacefully. Whether she was there when Sindaria and an old man were fussing about isn't material at the moment: what is material is that a brown(?) shape has made quite a noisy entrance quite nearby her. She is currently Startled, I think.
lol
Brown works
though it may not be so brown now
@Cat [Free invokes are usually limited to two (1 for creating/discovering/manipulating an aspect, 1 for getting 3 more than you needed to do so).]
Cat
Cat
OK
[You can have as many as you like spread across multiple aspects, though.]
Jun 3, 2013 12:57
@JonathanHobbs some of the brown may have washed off now, he has not had a chance to bathe for a while
@JonathanHobbs And what does Stellata look like, for the record?
lol
as if anyone can see yet
This is a better time than forgetting to describe her later.
but it is a good time to establish it
Stellata is a plant lady. She's green and seven feet tall, and so is the armor she's wearing. Or the armor she's growing. It's hard to tell which it is and it's hard to tell where it ends and she begins. Her face is partially obscured by what may or may not be a helmet, though right now her head's pointed at the monk in the water.
So he'd have a clear look at her face, though he's blind, and I imagine submerged.
Jun 3, 2013 13:00
Is Stellata going to take an action this round, or move to an adjacent zone?
yep
both
the second one doesn't hurt nearly as much as the first
She's going to climb out of that pool pronto.
Preferably on a bank opposite the one the monk fell in from.
[I'm taking the tag on Startled for myself, by the way, but it's fragile.]
"it's raining Peasants! RUUUUN!"
[What do you mean you're taking it for yourself?]
Jun 3, 2013 13:01
I see only one problem
[You have a free invoke on it?]
there was no roll.....
@JonathanHobbs Right.
but he did say it is there
so I guess that works
Nothing in particular is in the way of Stellata getting out of the pool, so that's a free action to move a zone unless she wants to do it in a particularly interesting way.
Jun 3, 2013 13:03
sounds like the idea is just to get out?
@trogdor Yeah, it is at the moment!
Does she have a rolly action too?
murder perhaps?
lol
Stellata climbs out and turns to look at whatever thing it is that just fell into the pool. Moonbear? Regular bear!? Enlarged angry badly shaven hobo? What the heck is this thing?
Is that something she does now or later?
Jun 3, 2013 13:04
free action to climb out
@JonathanHobbs Now, if she likes. Moving to an adjacent zone is free.
Right now then. :)
I'll wait to hear what exactly the monk does next.
so no other action?
(I imagined him in a brown robe actually.)
I'm not sure what else I should/can do?
You could Create Advantage by placing an aspect on yourself (Ready for Trouble, maybe?).
Jun 3, 2013 13:06
he may be in brown but not as strongly brown as the (hopefully) dirt he has not been washing off recently till now
(Or summon up some plants by placing a scene aspect?)
I see no reason for him not to be wearing brownish robes
@BESW I'll do that. Stellata is going to get herself Ready for Trouble. She doesn't know her opponent yet, or if there is an opponent.
Narrate, including the approach you'll use, roll (vs +0), and finish the narration based on the result.
Stellata steadies herself on the balls of her feet. She's ready to either attack or run, but she doesn't appear to have any weapons in hand. The main thing here is she needs to think fast and focus, so she's going to try to cleverly Ready for Trouble.

Jun 3, 2013 13:09
[blink]
Cat
Cat
:)
4+2, 6 shifts.
Stellata is mentally in the zone.
Cat
Cat
Why do the shifts matter?
(or don't they)
Jun 3, 2013 13:10
I succeeded with style I guess!
Cat
Cat
Oh, ok
yeah
Shifts matter in this case for two reasons.
First, Stellata got three or more shifts above what she needed, so she gets a second tag.
Second, if anyone wants to remove the aspect, they have to get a +6 or better.
Cat
Cat
Oh, that's what you were saying before
Ouch!
@JonathanHobbs Conclude narration, and feel free to actually change the aspect from "Ready for Trouble" to something worth 6 shifts of awesome.
Jun 3, 2013 13:12
yeah
Oh goodness. I'm not sure what to change it to.
Fully Prepared
Prepared for Anything?
that seems to be workable
Ready for Anything sounds good.
Jun 3, 2013 13:13
it is 6 shifts
or Completely in the Moment?
Oooh.
Do it!
Much better for her in particular.
Cat
Cat
...no sneaking by her now ...
yeah,... like I am sneaking
Cat
Cat
lol
(I was being self-centered there)
Jun 3, 2013 13:14
lol
maybe she will blow it all on me and you can escape
Cat
Cat
let's hope, lol
;)
I am,... threatening,... as I fall down
threatening like a rock
Ok. Stellata is Completely in the Moment. She's calmed, she's staring very wide-eyed at this thing in the water and her eyes are darting around her surroundings. Her senses are keen, her ears are metaphorically perked and so on for various other planty senses. She's watching, and waiting.
She's going to wait to know what's going on before she acts.
If she has a heart its beat is now steady, and she takes a deep breath.
(end narration?)
works for me
Henry listens for a moment, then turns vaguely in Sin's direction. "Yer a good bit younger than I am, lass."
"Fancy a smattering of spying? I can give ye some pointers, and they'll ne'er ken ye were there."
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 13:18
Sin cringes at what seems like Henry's excessively loud voice, but nods silently.
He is attempting to Cleverly boost Sin's confidence. Is Sin going to defend, or take it?
Cat
Cat
She'll take it
4d6
Cat
Cat
So I get a "confident" tag?
Jun 3, 2013 13:20
How about "I Have Good Advice"?
Cat
Cat
Hrmmm...this is going to bite me in the ass, but sure
Trouble paused mid-hiss at the sudden sounds, and his ears went straight up. Now he's straining to listen as hard as he can.
4d6
Jun 3, 2013 13:22
...Trouble has no idea what's out there, as the stew in front of him is far too tasty-smelling.
There is one last character, and I need Stellata and Kirby to make rolls against his attempt to hide.
4d6
He's got +0.
Do I pick any approach?
Anything you can justify for noticing someone who isn't very good at sneaking up.
ok, I guess I am listening underwater,.... I think an invoke involving the pool might be in order
Jun 3, 2013 13:25
Stellata will be Careful
4d
-2 + 2 = 0. What's that mean?
Moderate success on the part of the sneak?
this NPC has to beat 0 or not be sneaking past you
and you have tags on something that should help for keeping people from sneaking past around or behind you
Let's see what Kirby gets (as he is underwater, I will be giving a small bonus to the difficulty).
ok
I will use careful to listen
seeing as sight isn't gonna help
4d6
Jun 3, 2013 13:27
0 not counting the penalty
Isn't that +1?
err yeah
but penalty
which I don't know the number of, but I am assuming 1 or 2
So, you both tied with the target numbers. Because you're defending rather than actively rolling, the advantage goes to the instigator of the change.
So he'll place a boost on the two of you, something like "Doesn't Know I'm Here," unless you do something to increase your roll.
I think I am currently obliged to use one of those tags on Stellata's Completely in the Moment. She just now achieved it - she should be using it now if ever.
Jun 3, 2013 13:30
Fair enough. Increment her tag from x2 to x1 and she'll notice the guy.
Kirby?
lol
no
not spending FPs on this
Cat
Cat
So the tag is the number of times you can invoke the aspect?
(before losing it?)
For free, yes. But you only lose it afterward if it's fragile.
(Meaning you only just hit the target number.)
Cat
Cat
OK
So long as the aspect exists, you can spend FP on it.)
Stellata's keen senses pick up a clumsy stumbling in the bushes. A seed-covered man in a dark green robe uses his walking stick to clear the thorny branches away as he comes into the clearing.
Jun 3, 2013 13:34
HE IS THE SHADOWS O_O
He pauses, straightens his robe, and clears his throat while making a fiddly sign with his fingers. "HENRY!" his voice booms supernaturally, "I KNOW YOU HAVE THE GIRL!"
lol
that escalated quickly
Kirby, your turn.
Oh, wait.
He needs to roll to place the aspect, sorry.
4d6
Jun 3, 2013 13:35
That's +3 to make himself Menacing.
Kirby, you're up for real now.
ok
well, first Kirby gets up, and wants to climb out of the water
I think that being blind is going to make that an overcome check for him.
Any objections from the group?
no
not from me anyway
Cat
Cat
He could use the voice?
Although I guess he doesn't know that's not int he water
Jun 3, 2013 13:38
to climb out of water?
Right.
No objections, I totally pictured him face-down splashing around.
Let's say... difficulty of +1.
Cat
Cat
overcome
It's shallow, there's a voice to move toward.
Jun 3, 2013 13:38
I think careful can actually aply to this now
4d6
Indeed.
Narrate, please.
(It's a tie, so you need to succeed at minor cost.)
Kirby flounders around in the water, and eventually starts feeling his way to any nearby edge of the pool
what can I make a cost? some kind of fragile aspect?
Jun 3, 2013 13:40
That'd work.
On All Fours, maybe.
And then I get the tag.
or waterlogged?
Jun 3, 2013 13:41
that is better
I like that
Okay, sounds good. Kirby gets to his feet on dry ground, but is waterlogged.
Kirby finds his way to the edge by feel, and carefully climbs out, but he has splashed around so much that he is now waterlogged
