@phwd I gently wanted to move in that direction....;-)
@JacobJanTuinstra From talking to other mods, give it another day and see what happens, could just be caching
So, to me it sounds like you're telling me to restart my computer because the mouse isn't working properly. If I check tomorrow at the same CET time (21.41), then they should be gone?
Stack Exchange is heavily cached in certain areas meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/69164/…

So theoretically, one could have 25*3=75 tags that are "empty". Are they still selectable when choosing tags on Web Applications?
Basically yes.
I really wouldn't worry about it.
This question, made me trigger: meta.webapps.stackexchange.com/q/2276/29140
To reduce the number of tags.
Which is good, but as @phwd said there's a lot of caching going on in certain areas on SE. Tags is probably one of them.
If it is not wanted, I will cease my quest
Please do carry on removing unwanted tags. It will just take a while for the fruits of your labour to show.

What about the other tags, with little to now questions, but having a synonym?
They should disappear too. Or at least I think they should.
If they don't then that might be the reason you are seeing what you are seeing.
Good thinking....
Perhaps I should go and break the synonym on one of the tags to see what happens.
With the widget/widgets one all we need to do is merge the tags - which is one step up from a synonym
Hmm it appears to be already merged.
This is getting exciting
I'm with you ChrisF
Ah. We can only merge if the synonym exists.

Sathya just renamed the tag into the other..
So google-apps-scripting into google-apps-script
Well if there are only a few questions with tag "B" and you want it to be tag "A" then editing the post to remove "B" and add "A" is the quickest and easiest thing you can do.
But as this bumps the post to the front page it becomes a problem if "B" is attached to 15 or 20 questions. In that case proposing a synonym and doing a merge is preferred as it doesn't bump the posts.
That would give me theoretically (16-3)*25=325 posts to re-work.....
times to number of occurences
I don't follow your logic? Why do you need to rework 325 posts?
13 tag / tag page. in total 25 pages = 325
Must I do that manually?
I still don't understand what you are trying to do.

I'm preparing something...give me a few mintues OK?
Where do you see the second screen shot?
I'm seeing "5 questions tagged [google-wave]"
when you select wave, at the upper right
Nope. Seeing "5 questions" regardless of which one I select.
OK. I've deleted the [google-wave]/[wave] synonym
Now when I search for "wave" from the tags page I only see [google-wave].
I see only 2 questions
I really don't know why you are only seeing 2.
Which two?

You have the "faq" tab selected.
Select one of the others - e.g. "votes".
Or "newest" or "active".
Not "unanswered" though :)

Me Idiot
I don't think so. I've done it before now.
Final verdict: how do I continue, if ever?
Right, now we've cleared that up, on to the other "issue" - the synonyms. I think the appearance of the synonym tag is just an artefact of the system.
It could be that the all the questions using [wave] were deleted/retagged before the synonyms could be merged.
But now you can't add [wave] (well you can now because I broke the synonym) because it is a synonym.
All we can do is break the synonym now so that the unused tag disappears. This does run the risk of it reappearing as a separate tag.
The tags don't appear in the Ask Question area, so howto or pop
As I said, I don't think there's anything we can/should do about it.
@JacobJanTuinstra No they won't. If you try to add them manually they'll get renamed when you post the question.

Well, then I rest my case. I learnt something. Thanks for you time ChrisF, I'm caliing it a day.....
Hurray again !!
@ChrisF: all those phantom tags occupy space in the tag overview page.
@JacobJanTuinstra As I said we can break the synonyms if we think that the synonym isn't likely to reappear.
You could ask a meta question about it.
