I'd like to bring up another subject
Should we expand our scope?
@MadaraUchiha How so?
I think we can accept anime-like series to a certain limit, as well as anime-style games.
@MadaraUchiha I think we can as long as they are not too obscure
Anime-like series I'm okay with. Anime-style games I'm okay with for story-related questions, but not gameplay ones.
But it's a matter of scale. I think counts as anime-style, but I'm not sure about
which bring up the question... should we also expand our scope to include manga-like series korean manhwa and chinese manhua

@Krazer I actually don't think we'll get many questions from those realms
@LoganM I think that qualifies.
It's clearly anime-based in style, and it does display anime-charasteristics
@Krazer I think we should, but these communities are an order of magnitude smaller than the Japanese anime fanbase so I think we'll never have very many questions like that even if we allow it.
An even bigger problem is the fact that we can't really "support" these questions
We don't have (m)any users who can reliably answer such questions
@MadaraUchiha I haven't seen it, so I can't say for certain. But there are some anime-style cartoons that I wouldn't really want on this site, e.g. Samurai Jack.
@LoganM Samurai Jack isn't anime-style at all
It's more of a Chinese style drawing really
@MadaraUchiha Wikipedia says that it borrows older anime styles:
Samurai Jack is an American animated television series created by Genndy Tartakovsky for Cartoon Network. The series follows "Jack", a time-displaced samurai warrior, in his singular quest to find a method of traveling back in time and defeating the tyrannical demon Aku. Episode plots range from dark and epic to lighthearted and comic, but often contain little dialogue. Stories instead rely on the series' highly detailed, outline-free, masking-based animation, as well as its cinematic style and pacing. Many battle scenes in the series are reminiscent of samurai films, and since Jack's robo...

specifically here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
Where is the limit drawn?
I want to expand our scope so that we can successfully receive questions from other sites as well
@Krazer lol the links we posted point to the same paragraph.
Anyway the bigger problem with Avatar is that if we allow it, we may get flooded with these questions. From what I understand it's rather popular. Maybe we can allow it as a trial run, and if we start getting lots of questions about it (i.e. more than Naruto levels) we'll have to stop it.
@LoganM lol
We can make a note in meta that this is a trial run
Is that acceptable with everyone?
@Mysticial I haven't heard your opinion on this yet.
Before we jump into this, how big is this Avatar community.
If it's big enough, I actually don't want to open this door until we have a sufficiently large population to avoid being taken over.

It is still hard to draw a line. Both shows (Avatar and Jack) are not anime, according to every reputable source, and both are inspired by anime. I don't see any practical general policy which would include one and exclude the other.
That's not a fair comparison.
Put in the full naruto name. Or whatever it is.
As a very rough measurement.
@Mysticial Naruto is the full name.
You could also try just "avatar". Yes it'll get a lot of false positives, but if it's still smaller than naruto... then that says something.
It's literally all about the movie
Feb 9, 2013 20:55
Well, the difference is that Avatar isn't a "cartoon".
The ATLAB Wikia is at page 7.
If you want to make that the line - that's perfectly fine with me.
@Mysticial How is it not a cartoon?
The Naruto one will pick up lots of non-english stuff, while the Avatar community is mostly english-speaking
@MadaraUchiha I haven't seen the movie. But looking at all the images and posters I've seen, it looks a bit too realistic to be a "cartoon".
Feb 9, 2013 20:57
@Mysticial You're talking about the movie, or the Last Airbender?
@MadaraUchiha I have no idea. Since I'm not familiar at all with the whole franchise.
@Mysticial There the Avatar movie (large blue people), which has nothing to do with it
So I might not be the best person to make this call.
I personally think this anime vs cartoon discussion is just silly.
There's the Avatar the Last Airbender series, which is a cartoon

Let's not start the "Are anime and cartoons actually different?" debate here again. We did that once on the main site and it's our most controversial post to date. If every third meta post is arguing about this, I think that would be a really bad outcome.
@MadaraUchiha oh... haha. I didn't know that existed. I'm an idiot.
Lets let the users decide this.. if it gets too out of hand we can step in
Our site name already implies that we're mainly for Japanese-style Anime.
Feb 9, 2013 20:59
Okay then
Whether we want to stay that way or branch out is a call that we'll have to make at some point.
Let's wrap up
On the subject of expanding our scope
As long as we make note that anime inspired things are okay, but just don't make it the main topic
We have decided to allow anime-like cartoons such as as a pilot.
We have also decided to allow story and plot related questions in anime-style games.
That pretty much sums it up
