Cornelia Funke: Drachenreiter - es ist ein Kinderbuch, aber dadurch auch etwas einfacher geschrieben. Es geht um die Abenteuer eines Drachens in der Menschenwelt.

Hm. Wie ist das. "Hättest du (mal) besser zugehört" kann heißen: Du hast gar nicht zugehört oder Du hast nicht richtig zugehört. Ersteres sagt man im Englischen mit "You better had listen". Wie sagt man zweiteres wohl? Keine Hits für "Had you better listen" "Had you listen better" "Had you well listen" "Had you listen well" auf Google.

Any ideas, guys?

No one says You better had listen

We say "you had better listen", which means do it for your own good...almost a threat

It kind of implies you had better listen (else bad things will happen)

Can also be done without had: you better listen dammit!

These aren't past tense though

this is almost a command. For now and future

@ScottW well in German it was subjunctive. The English "You better listen" would be "Du hörst jetzt mal besser zu!"

So it's not really a correct translation

For past .. It depends what you're trying to say. "You better have listened" means like, I hope you were listening else these bad things will happen :P

"Hättest du (mal) besser zugehört" is being said after someone missed a thing which he should have heard had he listened. It would have been better if he had listened.
