As someone working in IT, I would rather say that popups on your computer are an indication for a larger problem. But if you mean that they are annoying and lead to problems, you can only use verursachen.
@DerPolyglott33 I find that sentence somewhat weird even in english. But the "to gesture" is probably best translated with "bedeuten" or "(ein) Handzeichen geben"
e.g.: Ich wies meinen Bruder mit einem Handzeichen dazu an, unserer Mutter zu sagen, dass er mit seinen Freunden ins Kino gehen wolle*.
*) Note: the trailing subclause is technically indirect speech, so the correct verb form is "wolle"; colloquially, "will" is also acceptable
@DerPolyglott33 there's no everyday word for "to gesture" in german (though, as I said, I find this situation weird in english as well). you have to paraphrase it somehow. i chose literally "I directed my brother with a hand sign to tell our mom..."
@DerPolyglott33 heute würde man meist nur sagen "Er bat ihn, herein zu kommen." - etwas umständlicher und veraltend "Mit einer Geste bedeutete er ihm hereinzutreten."
A short "Er winkte in hinein/herbei." - is also possible.
