My monster is punching your monster and vice-versa. Now my monster doesn't get hit by your monster because it doesn't exist anymore. You monster still gets punched by my non-existent monster.

My monster is launching a rock at/casting a spell at your monster and vice-versa. Now my monster doesn't get hit by your rock/spell because it doesn't exist any more. Your monster still gets hit by my rock/spell because that exists independently of my monster.
It makes perfect sense.
