Don't forget to leave a couple digits of your number here if you want to call in!
@ArghMo, long time no see. Welcome back to the site!
Thanks! Yes, it's been a while. is there a reason that I just had to create a new login? (other than personal incompetence.)
Jun 3, 2012 18:09
@ArghMo It doesn't look like you did so... but if you did then I have no idea why.
Interesting. thanks.
@Dave, so far there is hardly a person who's spoken whose voice sounded anything like what I imagined.

@Alex Second.
I used to love reading archives of aish das and mail-jewish. didn't even realize they were still around.
@ArghMo Mail-Jewish is. Not sure about AishDas.
Jun 3, 2012 18:16
got it
@Alex It is. @ArghMo
Say, you know, the "new" thing nowadays is Twitter, with its 140-character limit. And the accepted answer here pointed out that מי יודע equals 140!
@Alex Older s'farim overuse rashe tevos to save paper. Now there's a new reason.
Hello everyone. Just got here. Who's talking on the air right now?
@jake Rabbi Student
Jun 3, 2012 18:20
@jake @IsaacMoses (interviewer) and Rabbi Student (-ee)
WAF

(347) 633-9520 to call in.
@msh210 Thanks.
(I always wonder whether his disciples can truthfully say that they learned "from their Student more than from from all")

Q: Why is it necessary to ask a Rabbi?

Isaac MosesIn various places on this site, including the FAQ, we have the following disclaimer: Like Wikipedia, this site makes no guarantee of validity, and does not offer professional (particularly rabbinic) advice. Treat information from this site like it came from a crowd of your friends. As discu...

Great question Rebecca!
thanks!
so excited to be able to speak to Rabbi Student! (and of course to Isaac, too)
Jun 3, 2012 18:28
@ArghMo No offense, @Isaac. ;-)
@msh210 exactly
I wonder how our most-viewed questions compare to the tag analysis? (Can we sort questions by view?)
@msh210 ready for showtime?
@Dave yeah

Q: Is using a Kindle on Shabbat permitted?

Monica CellioA Kindle is an e-book reader that uses "e-ink" rather than an LCD screen. It has physical controls to turn pages. If left unused it enters a sleep mode, and you can return to reading by moving a button. Returning from sleep mode causes a light (LED? not sure what it is, but not heat-emitting) ...

Jun 3, 2012 18:34
@MonicaCellio thanks; I've added it to meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/a/1162 also
@msh210 thanks - hadn't seen the list there.
Aish Das Areivim is definitely still around.
@msh210 no accent???? :)
@MonicaCellio You can find all the questions above a certain threshold view count by putting views:1000 into the search bar (for all posts with >= 1000 views).

Q: Height of a mezuzah and children:

MosheIf a child cannot reach the upper third of the doorway and he is the primary occupant of said room, may the mezuzah be affixed lower than the upper third?

@msh210 I think you said it in exactly 2 minutes!
Isaac, nice Q example. good stories.
Any stats on how many listeners?
WAF, very appropriate to give a Nach question to jake! :)
@Alex I consider myself lucky.

Q: Is this site for Children?

YahuA father asked me if this site is appropriate for children considering the fact that oftentimes incorrect answers are being posted. Children are very impressionable and as Chazal tell us, Shabeshtah, Kavun D'ul, Ul. , a mistake, once it takes hold, it stays. I understand that in theory, given the...

Wait, @Alex, did I miss your dvar torah?
@jake: yeah, it was the first thing after the words of welcome
Did we just lose audio, or is it me?
Oh, I hope there's a recording.
@MonicaCellio No, me too. I think time was up.
yes, me too
Jun 3, 2012 19:01
@jake There is. See launchparty.yodeya.com
Time management not awesome.
too bad it wasn't made two hours long - I would have liked to hear from more callers
@IsaacMoses Very close, though.
Great job hosting, @IsaacMoses!
Do look at the show notes. We'll have full credits there soon.
Jun 3, 2012 19:02
@msh210 Seconded.
Yes, thank you @IsaacMoses.
Thank you @IsaacMoses!
@Alex Perhaps they would have all called in in the last 2 minutes anyway though.
Many thanks for our awesome theme music to New-York-based producer, vibraphonist, and pianist Ben Portner. You can find him online at myspace.com/benportner or email him at [email protected].
We used a bunch of sounds in this show from Freesound.org. We’ll put a full list in the show notes.
Let me reiterate hearty thanks to Joel Spolsky, Jeff Atwood, Jin Yang, and the reset of Stack Exchange.

Yasher koach to the Mi Yodeya team :)
Jun 3, 2012 19:05
My glass isn't empty yet, so LECHAIM!
L'chaim velivrachah.
And, to quote what the Rebbe used to say at the end of his public gatherings (based on something that Rema used to do), "Those who have to say a berachah acharonah will certainly say a berachah acharonah."
@Alex Oh, is that where my local shaliach of his got it from. Shoulda guessed as much.
Hm, apparently I speak much too quietly/unclearly. Maybe you shoulda done it after all, @HodofHod.
@IsaacMoses you were quite the articulate host. Thanks!
2
@msh210: I heard you loud and clear.
@Alex Oh, okay.
Jun 3, 2012 19:12
@IsaacMoses L'chaim v'l'vracha!!
@msh210 Idk, I was tripping over my tongue as it was.
@Alex I want him to post a question, so he can earn the student badge

It just occurred to me... I should have introduced the connection to the parshah by quoting the Alter Rebbe's aphorism about that (that "we must live with the times")!
2
@Alex Okay, that makes me wonder....
@Dave I'm hoping to have them soon from blogtalkradio. I'll put them in the show notes when I do
@IsaacMoses: odd, it says there 981 for me
Jun 3, 2012 19:25
Oh, man! You could still hear me after the show ended! I could have done the rest of the credits!
@IsaacMoses Ooh, are we counting down(/up)?
@Alex Hmm. Maybe my view includes deleteds
@msh210 @HodofHod You both sounded great, and it was great to hear both of your voices!
@IsaacMoses Thanks. It was good to hear yours too (and y'all's who spoke). Perhaps one day you'll get to hear one of us again, Isaac.
@Alex Thanks for the rishona reminder, too.
@msh210 B"H I hope to meet all y'all in person sooner or later
@IsaacMoses Thank you, back at you! Sorry for my very Chassidic pronunciation of "Hod" :D
@IsaacMoses Amen!
Jun 3, 2012 19:30
@HodofHod Oh I didn't notice. Did you say hade?
@HodofHod diversity FTW
Jun 3, 2012 19:41
@ArghMo You, too! Thanks very much for breaking the call-in ice!
@ArghMo Thanks!
@msh210 @jake @MonicaCellio @Dave Thanks!
@Yodeyans Can we get one more massive thank you to @IsaacMoses without whom none of this would be here?

@DoubleAA source?

@DoubleAA SE and Torah go so well together. Someone would have had to come up with it.
@IsaacMoses : "I founded mi.yodeya." Source
@DoubleAA Touché, Isaac.
@msh210 Something lake that. ;)
@DoubleAA THANK YOU, @ISAAC MOSES!!!

grammar q, anyone?
@HodofHod Shoot.
@msh210 ShU"T?
@IsaacMoses He seems to have a Sh, I was just sayin' someone might have a T.
...the daughter of Rav Chisda (Rava’s wife, whom Bar Hedya predicted would die.) The immortal question: who or whom?
@IsaacMoses True. But (and many people here know this already but some may not) Isaac started mi.yodeya before it was a SE site of the sort we know it as today, recruited the original users, posted the 1st questions, talked to SE about the m.y's joining SE, wrote the area51.se proposal, recruited followers thereof, pushed for enhancements etc. all along the way, and, doubtless, did many things I'm unaware of. He's devoted so many hours to this site, purely in the interest of harbatzas Tora.
3
@HodofHod Who.
Jun 3, 2012 20:12
@IsaacMoses Pleasure. I hate listening to myself talk (as I suspect many others do as well), but I couldn't resist listening to the playback. I usually express myself much better in writing than in speech. I hope my point was clear enough, though, even if I did sound half-asleep for some reason.
@msh210 has devoted a comparable number of hours to the site, and possibly more, without being as loud about it or making grandiose claims in his profile :)
@IsaacMoses Har. You know that's not true.
(I do make grandiose claims in my profile. :-))
@Alex (Hearing it again now,) I like it actually.
Jun 3, 2012 20:37
@msh210 I had a similar progression of reactions. Try listening on a system that has a subwoofer
@IsaacMoses I don't even know what that is, or what system might have one.
@msh210 some stereo and computer sound systems have an extra speaker for bass sounds that rests on the floor. It helps with stuff like emphasizing the beat
A subwoofer (or "sub") is a woofer, or a complete loudspeaker, which is dedicated to the reproduction of low-pitched audio frequencies known as the "bass". The typical frequency range for a subwoofer is about 20–200 Hz for consumer products, below 100 Hz for professional live sound, Subwoofers are intended to augment the low frequency range of loudspeakers covering higher frequency bands. Subwoofers are made up of one or more woofers in a loudspeaker enclosure capable of withstanding air pressure while resisting deformation. Subwoofer enclosures come in a variety of designs, i...
@IsaacMoses ah. I don't own such, I'm afraid. Actually, considering how much I like emphasized bass beat, I'm not afraid.
... but even without, that tune has grown on me a great deal, to the point that I'm quite taken with it.
@HodofHod Just rearrange the phrase so it is a sentence not a question, and decide if you would use he or him. In this case: Bar Hedya predicted HE would die. So it's 'who'.
Alternatively, consider 'whom I called'. Rearranged, it becomes: 'I called HIM'. So it's 'whom'.
Jun 3, 2012 21:01
I just said my le chayim for mi yodeya
Letoirah, chuppah, u-maasim tovim!
