@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun How many hour per day would you say you do, in order to meet the moderator commitements?
@Beofett, same question to you? I'd really have to think about it because things will start changing for us once we start taking classes for our license and then start getting kids, but I am thinking preschooler- not infant so it will be busy, but not quite like having a new baby in the house.
@balancedmama Typically, I have the site open in the background, and check it periodically throughout the day during weekend, and less often on weekends. The actual moderator tasks I do, though, are probably less than an hour a day, all told.
We don't get many flags, which certainly helps.
Basically, I'd say the duties boil down to:
Check for flags (maybe 1-2 a day, on average)
Well, okay, would you want me as your co-moderator? That isn't too bad as far as time goes at all - I probably spend at least that much time most days anyway.
Look at latest posts to see if there's anything that needs to be done (spam, arguments, etc.)
Check the review queue for close votes/reopen votes
I usually check the review queue anyway.
@balancedmama Certainly! In all honesty, your name was one of the first to spring to mind. I was hoping you'd chime in on Tim's thread

Hmm. . . well, thanks!
I'll definitely think on it a little more - maybe I will.
What do you guys do about travel? Do you just try to make sure you aren't both taking a "day off" at the same time?
@balancedmama If I know I'm going to be away for a few days, I'll drop a message here in chat, or in the chat room for moderators.
Torben said there is no dress code? Are you sure??? l0l I won't be wearing ball gowns or anything.
I wear business casual most days... but for reasons completely unrelated to the site ;)
lol - as long as you are wearing something!!
My three year old (the one I nanny) insisted that his dad should give me a hug and kiss good-bye today! That was weird.
Yeah, I imagine that could be awkward

I was just thinking our clothing convo might start to verge in the same direction if we weren't careful. How is Hunter?
He's good.... getting psyched for the holidays :)
...and the snow :(
Yup, I bet! I'm far enough south (and west) still no snow here - but we do have some ice!!!
You must have quite a bit.
We're actually gearing up for a possible 8 inch accumulation tonight :(
I'm about to leave to go pick Hunter up, and stock up on milk and other supplies
(sorry if I seem a bit distracted... multitasking in a rush here)
Wow yeah! Make sure you've gotten plenty of the favorites - at least it is a Friday right? No work for two days while the streets get cleaned up.
No worries! I'm ALWAYS distracted :-)
And have a good weekend if I don't get another chance to say so.
@balancedmama I fear I'll be putting some hours in this weekend... end of the year is a big scramble at my work
Dec 13, 2013 21:23
Bummer - can you work from home online?
@balancedmama you have a good weekend, too! If you have any other questions about what moderating entails, I'll check back later :)
@balancedmama For the stuff I'm working on now, yeah. Although my work is less than 5 minutes from my home
BBL :)
Well, at least it is a short commute (from home or not)
Yeah, I'll think about it - I am on, and probably more active in chat and on meta than most from the looks of it - There is Rory Alsop too - anyone else?

@balancedmama I think Beofett answered well. It's pretty much the same for me. I don't keep the site open but I take a peek when there is a small break in my work, and in the evenings. That way, the duty really doesn't take any time I was not already spending, but now I spend the same time on more worthwhile things. As Beofett said, mostly -
- skimming the new questions and answers, seeing if they are all right and whether I can contribute anything. That's how I built my rep: lots and lots of small things (plus a few highlights). I also check any open flags, and raise new flags on anything I'd like a second opinion on before intervening. Sometimes I also check the profile of new users, just to maintain a feel for the demography.
As I said, the best thing is that this doesn't really take more time than my earlier random surfing. Except if I write a big answer of course. It feels good to have a meaningful task rather than just surfing.
Sometimes, an issue requires a small chat discussion, either publicly in this room, or in the private room for all SE moderators (all sites).
Rory is already a mod on (at least) one other SE site, but I see several good candidates, and you're at the top of my personal list. But remember these things: it's strictly voluntary, there's no pay or benefits. Nobody will ever complain when you prioritize your own life before the site, so never feel bad for doing so. And be aware that it tends to be addictive :-)

(By the way, I'll probably be offline from Sun to Fri.)

Okay, I put up a message in the "voting?" meta thread. One last question though, are there ever "meetings" - I understand they would be online, but are there live time chats or anything?
Also, Since someone connected, "what are the merits of teaching typing at the expense. . . " to the new question about keyboard layouts, I've gotten quite a few new comments etc. on that question. It might by time to go through and minimize a lot of the extra chatter that happened on that one so that new visitors aren't bogged down in all those comments. I'm glad to see it appears the new question isn't getting quite the same kind of chatter mine initially did.

@balancedmama comments are meant to be fairly short-lived, so if there isn't much value in them they can be purged. Flag the post to remind us to do that :-)
Yes there are regular meetings in the moderoters' private chat room. These are announced by mail to the mods in advance.
