@balancedmama I think Beofett answered well. It's pretty much the same for me. I don't keep the site open but I take a peek when there is a small break in my work, and in the evenings. That way, the duty really doesn't take any time I was not already spending, but now I spend the same time on more worthwhile things. As Beofett said, mostly -
- skimming the new questions and answers, seeing if they are all right and whether I can contribute anything. That's how I built my rep: lots and lots of small things (plus a few highlights). I also check any open flags, and raise new flags on anything I'd like a second opinion on before intervening. Sometimes I also check the profile of new users, just to maintain a feel for the demography.
As I said, the best thing is that this doesn't really take more time than my earlier random surfing. Except if I write a big answer of course. It feels good to have a meaningful task rather than just surfing.
Sometimes, an issue requires a small chat discussion, either publicly in this room, or in the private room for all SE moderators (all sites).
Rory is already a mod on (at least) one other SE site, but I see several good candidates, and you're at the top of my personal list. But remember these things: it's strictly voluntary, there's no pay or benefits. Nobody will ever complain when you prioritize your own life before the site, so never feel bad for doing so. And be aware that it tends to be addictive :-)
