A: What should our logo and site design look like?

gnatHandshake for a logo, like this: Or water cooler, like this:

We can't let @CMW and @Hugo occupy the water cooler without the quips and insights of the one and only RhysW!
Talk about overused!
(no offense intended @gnat, I just hate those stock images)
@jmac I cant say ive ever seen that image before!
Not that one, but the handshake concept drives me bonkers.
Especially the inter-racial handshake which is somehow more cringeworthy
"We're going to one-up your middle-aged white man handshake with an interracial middle-aged man handshake!"
Jan 23, 2014 08:55
@jmac Jin will make SE-style image anyway, all graduated sites use custom made logos
sort of a brand consistency
I feel bad for being so, errr, untactful with my distaste for said logo concept (hand shaking). Really didn't mean to make it come out as harsh as it did
Haha i know what you mean
there is an unequal push for equality
the irony is tangible
I've seen lots of more recent stock images using two non-white people handshaking. And sometimes one is a woman!
Now if that doesn't say, "My company stands for tolerance and equal opportunity" what does?
I'm still yet to see a stock image where they arent smiling with their jobs
the reality is more likely that they are grumpy
@jmac no! I know you were meant to be snarky and rude!!! I spent whole 50 seconds entering "hand shake icon" in Google and picking first that came up and now you are trashing my hard work :)
Jan 23, 2014 08:57
Oh dear, I had better start a question, "What do you do when you were mean and snarky and rude to a colleague's lack of taste?"

@jmac It's good, RhysW is back, then ;-)
@jmac that would jump at the top of hot list in a matter of minutes and stay there for weeks
I'm trying to figure out what would be a good logo for us. I really really really really like the entire design of Travel
Just not a watercooler
please not a watercooler
I love the corkboard idea, for the community bulletin

What about a stylized office chair?

Q: Alternative ideas for a logo for the graduated site

hippietrailI think it's safe to say that more of us were more happy with Jin's first presentation of our site's logo and style than the second attempt. The new abstract logo based on several superimposed pushpin graphics at varying angles isn't growing on some of us. So I'd like to revisit our old questio...

and I think a classy leather portfolio (possibly with legal paper in it) would make a decent background if understated enough

(I really can't draw one, though)
I don't think an office chair is a good idea because I don't want people to assume we only cover ofices.
Not all workplaces involve chairs, or leather portfolios, i think we should go for something universal

I assume for a lot of people that would be a clear association to the workplace
i.e we dont want to discourage questions from poeple who dont work in an office
truckers, bus drivers, pre-school teachers

I'm not sure there is that one thing that's common to all work places
builders, plumbers
Yeah, it may be interesting to get a logo of people in various uniforms.

except maybe underpants
I hope it's underpants

a paycheck :L
So a suit, a doctor's outfit, work clothes, etc.
Yeah, I was thinking a paycheck or a time card.
But I don't know about that.
@jmac yes! and they should be different ethnicities and genders and should be smiling and shaking hands

@RhysW Standing in a circle, holding hands, birds-eye view
@CMW your vote goes here (keep in mind, Jin will make a custom image, what's there is only a raw demo):

A: What should our logo and site design look like?

Dipan MehtaI think when i think of workplace -i think of the "office chair" - It of course the most critical element for us to function in the office; but sometimes "Chair" is also extended with Connotations of "Position" in the hierarchy in the company. The bigger the chair you have - the more influent...

What about a punch clock?
Those still exist?
No, apparently they are now electronic.
Thats like using a 3.5" floppy as the logo for a computing site
a bit outdated :P
I prefer the term 'retro' young'un!
(then again I want to have watches for badges since in the past workers were given golden watches upon retirement)
Jan 23, 2014 09:04
That one I like better than the shaking hands, but I think we can do betterer.
@gnat I do quite like this
but i dont think we would want to be associated just with money
@RhysW don't tell @jmac, it's a stock icon
(plus a generic unicorn bill would be way cooler as payment)
@RhysW pick a weaker currency then?
haha

What currency do the seychelles have?
Let's use that. They're communist, too.
What about a logo like the Japanese exit sign, only with a smile and a clock showing 5pm?
Because let's face it, the goal of being at work is to leave.
Then again, that could encourage "just quit"

Q: Being More Aggressive about "Just Quit" Comments/Answers

jmacWe have had a discussion in the past about whether or not 'Quit Your Job' is an acceptable answer. I have been noticing this in comments quite a bit. This is the one that caught my attention spurring this post, but since I can't search comment text, it isn't easy to find additional examples: ...

A picture of someone climbing the corporate ladder
Mr. "Let's not exclude non-office workers"
people outside of offices get promotions too
Jan 23, 2014 09:08
You want to exclude people working in flat structured offices?

underpants. really.
@jmac damn you! i think youv bested me
What about some stylized image of a clock ticking down 8 hours. I know not everyone is 8 hours. And I know that not everyone is 9-5. But just show that this is about those hours of the day
Like grey hand with some sort of motion blur going from the 9 to the 5.
Possibly contained with the O of a nicely fonted and kerned Workplace
CMW
CMW
@jmac An hourglass, maybe?
@CMW I believe you mean an eight-hourglass
(I'm here all week folks)
Jan 23, 2014 09:13
@jmac that was..i might just leave again because of this :P
CMW
CMW
@RhysW lol.
@jmac or maybe eight hourglasses
in a circle, shaking hands, dressed up as doctors, factory workers, in suits, sweatpants, hoddies
How about an ever-updating snapshot of the front page of a random page in the SE network?
That's what work is for, right?
Jan 23, 2014 09:27
Last suggestion before quitting time: a logo showing various workplaces. Put a hospital next to an office building next to a school next to a factory in some sort of stylish fashion. But not stylish enough to confuse us for architechts.se

How would a Logo relate to the favicon of the page?
Just concerned that too much detail might make it hard to turn into an icon
We could always mimic Wikipedia's trade union icon:
@jmac workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/18531/… The guy here still doesnt understand what you mean
