Eclipse Phase random chargen begins now. Based on life paths from Transhuman (p 55).

Won't go into all the nitty-gritty detail, but will pick skills as they actually say something about the character.

Wholesome Youth, only one roll.

Sunward Hab. Not Earth, already cool.
(feel free to ask if it's unclear what things actually are, if you're unfamiliar with the setting)
And specifically on the Hub it was...
d10
What's sunward hab? (hub?)
Mercurian Slave Labor. Well. That took a turn.
@doppelgreener Hab is short for habitat, a living space. Often in space. Sunward simply means its closer to the Sun than the Earth.
So, our extroverted Chinese guy's childhood sucked. He was a worker on a hab. Gets Indenture package (will see what that is in a moment). Rolling to see which morph (body) he's in.

Case. That's probably even worse. The cheapest robotic body.
Alternative being a 'flat', an un-augmented regular body, i.e. you and me. Those suck.
> INDENTURE
You either won a lottery for the poor, where the prize was to go off-world, or you died during the Fall. Either way, you found yourself working away in virtual slavery to a hypercorp. You worked hard constructing habitats, mining asteroids, or terraforming Mars.
Because this is childhood, the Fall hasn't happened yet. The Fall being a cataclysmic event 10 years before the start of the game where super-intelligent AI nearly kills everyone before vanishing and leaving Earth uninhabitable.
> Suggested Motivations: +Hard Work, +Survival, –Hypercorps, –Indentured Service
@Magician Whoa.
@doppelgreener Ayup. EP is about survival of (trans)humanity. 95% of people have died.

Maybe it was a Portugese hypercorp that was building habs on... Mars? Yeah, lets go with Mars.
@BESW Maybe it's classic Sci Fi of 20th century.
And finally interest
2d10
Er, I meant Profession
Asteroid Mining/Prospecting.
Hm. Seems a bit at odds with hardware(groundcraft). Unless we're talking massive asteroids. Sure, why not.
In which case the synthetic body makes sense - can work in space, maintaining digging equipment.
Spent childhood looking something like this:
Wonderful. Then a Background Event happened.
2d10
> You grow up in a melting-pot, polyglot culture. Gain the Hyper Linguist trait.
Goes with being extroverted.
Now, how old are we.

> In your twenties, proceed directly to Step 8.
Right, so we don't get a pre-fall life event or adult pre-fall path. We were on the mining asteroid when the Fall happened. Trying to save up enough cash to get the family out, I think.
What happened to us during the Fall?
2d10
> You stay to the end, fighting a rear-guard action. Roll randomly on the Choosing a Morph table (p. 44) and gain +1 Moxie
Sep 28, 2015 05:52
@Magician Commuting from closer-to-the-sun-than-earth to Mars?
The fighting was less fierce out in space, but it did get everywhere. I don't think we were trying to protect the hypercorp who treated us like crap. Instead, we were trying to protect our friends in similar case morphs.
It couldnt be building on mars because your habitat is closer to the sun than to earth
@Adeptus Ah, yes, I messed up.
Concept changed anyway, we're mining asteroids.
So, chaos, fighting everywhere, space zombies, rogue AI. We get destroyed while protecting the evacuation, but that's fine. The hypercorp has a backup of our consciousness. Or maybe someone nicer gets the cortical stack (continuous backup, everyone has one) out. Lets see what morph we get out of this.
2d10
Ooh, a biomorph, something we haven't had since very early childhood.

Bouncer.
Cheap, specifically adapted to microgravity environments. Great!
We're moving up in the world.
9. Adult post-fall paths. We get a faction and a focus. We're free for the first time. Or are we?
d10
> You get the job done.
5 point Focus, 1 point Faction. We're not here to play politics or join cliques.
Normally you roll to see if you stay with your adult path or change to something new, but we didn't have an adult path. So we'll just roll to find out what we do now.
d10
Scientist! Well that's new. All those Sci Fi books must have inspired us.

Wow
Ok. We might be a pioneer in the research on synthmorph societies as well as effects being in a synth for a prolonged time has on the mind.
Uploading is still (relatively) recent, if widely accepted. Except for those bioconservatives. But they are silly.
We do still get a faction. Is it linked to our focus?

Nope! We get something random.
(It must be very hard to keep track of what i'm rolling for. Should I reference specific tables, or is no one bothering to follow along with the book anyway?)

@Magician I don't even have whatever book this is. Carry on!
Aircraft
@doppelgreener I linked the pdf at the start ;)
Huh. So. We've made something of a name for ourselves in the academic circles. We're quite a success story, from adversity into a phd. Applied for a grant to transfer to a hab orbiting Earth, nominally to join a university there. But really, we're still trying to find our family, who was on Earth during the Fall.
Lol
Youd be dead twice over in dead earth
Sep 28, 2015 06:12
(which is a very common motivation in the setting)
With these rolls
@Sandwich Thankfully, that's not what we're doing here!
Huh, we only have 9 point of packages so far, we get 1 more.

> PIRATE
Traveling wasn’t something you did because you wanted to see new places and people. More often than not, you needed to skip out of a habitat to avoid arrest. Soon enough, your talent at evading authorities was parlayed into a more profitable career “liberating” cargo from automated haulers and finding the best place to sell the goods.
Suggested Motivations: +Survival, +Thrill Seeking, +Wealth, –Authority
A rags-to-riches scientist spacepirate?
> Infiltration 15, Interest: (Choose One) 30, Pilot: Spacecraft 40
Could you summarise what's going on so far?
(there's a lot of unexplained dice rolls happening and a lot of different story elements coming up and apparently some are from sometime before the fall, and some are now, and I don't know what's going on really nor how you know what's happening when)
@Magician [squint] Maybe your neurosociology research involves involuntary test subjects.
@doppelgreener Grew up in indentured servitude, in a cheap robotic body mining asteroids. Made lots of friends among other unfortunate souls stuck there with no hope of ever improving our station. Then the Fall came, and we were free.
Sep 28, 2015 06:18
... that's kinda cool
95% of humanity dies, you are free. nice to have a good outcome from that. :D
Got a new body, got a new life. Sounds like we also got a new name. Became an academic, because why not. But the hypercorp still owns us, legally speaking. There are all kinds of fees, and they're ramping up.
Fled from them, using academic connections. Ended up on a hab orbiting Earth. Looking for clues of our family (whom we can't even remember). Maybe... Maybe we blame them for selling us out. Just a bit.
Sounds like a pretty cool biography so far. Lets see what post-fall event occurs (step 11).
2d10
> 2 You decide to experiment. Roll randomly on the Choosing a Morph table (p. 44)
Experiment my ass. The hypercorp was getting too close. We grabbed what we could.

Menton. Oooh.
"Mentons are genetically modified to increase cognitive abilities, particularly learning ability, creativity, attentiveness, and memory"
definitely useful for a scientist
Niiiice. Academic connections came through. Or maybe not. Maybe we stole the morph from a fellow scientist. Our double lives are intersecting, and about to come crashing down.
Almost done. We have something to decide. Is this a Firewall game, where we join the conspiracy to save transhumanity from existential risks, including itself?
Or are we going to be doing our own thing, we sure have enough on our plate.
Well, since no one's volunteering an opinion, I guess we'll join Firewall. Another roll!
2d10
> You are recruited by someone you know because of your skill sets. Gain +10 to one skill.
Hah, the most straightforward option.
And the very last roll. Optional story event. Of course we'll roll, what can possibly go wrong.

> Someone close to you opts for a real, final death
...it's my mentor. The one from whom I've "inherited" the menton morph. That's how it'll work.
My own body is a constant reminder of a friend I've lost.
Why did he choose to die? Can I find my family? What will I do to escape the hypercorp?
Sweet. I like this character. There's empathy there, and anger. And desperation.
That's pretty wild.
