Anyone interested in forming a study group to go through Jech's big set theory book over the course of a few months?
Sure @AriHerman
My contact is on profile, else, you can give me yours
Let's just chat for a minute first and see if it seems like this will work, k?
I went through a portion of this book in grad school, but I don't remember it well and even at the time the class was too fast-paced for me. So, I'm hoping to go through more thoroughly and get a more solid understanding.
That's how math courses are usually
xD

Haha, definitely can be!
Thick book. 600 pages.
Yeah, are you looking at a pdf?
I'm mainly interested in doing through chapter 14 plus a few selected other chapters. I'd like to find a syllabus and actually do problems from the book.
can I directly jump into 14 or do I need to read everything before?
Jul 26, 2022 05:45
I meant 1-14, not just 14.
I definitely don't think you can jump to 14, lol. :)
Okay, cool then it is fine with me. I can allocate time for this.
I'm probably a bit mathematically immature though.
Okay. Could you tell me a bit about your math background?
Messed up to be honest
I know a bit of everything.. not one thing well.

Have you taken an undergrad-level course in set theory before? Or done something equivalent?
I am not sure what consists as an undergraduate level course in Set theory.. but I suppose (?). I have gone through the axioms of ZFC, how that fits with in propositional logic. I know about the other NG .. NC somethign set theory.
written basic proofs from Tao's analysis textbook. Defined naturals through peano.
So? @AriHerman
Okay...maybe just take a look at the first couple of chapters and see if it seems like a doable level?
Okay
let me have a look
Is this suppoed to be super hard? xD
I mean, it's a graduate textbook.
For me personally, it's one of the hardest books I've work with. But that's subjective of course.
Looks okay to me tbh
But the exercise maybe harder than the theory I guess
Jul 26, 2022 05:53
You have experience with writing proofs?
Maybe that's a silly question...
You mean in a formal language ? Not that much
No, I just mean like...
I have so far argued mostly in Natural language
I can feel how nervous you are xD
But, at the very least, I can do it with you for the first few chapters. If it gets too hard later on, then we can think of it then.
Haha, yeah you're right.
I maybe dumb but I am not thaaaat dumb xD

My gf is out at an event where there is a lot of intimate dancing and nudity. So, I think I've got some anxiety from that which is probably seeping through, haha.
As they say, you gotta let free of the things that you really love
Yes, very apt.
Anyway, this is the first time I've tried to set up any kind of collaborative studying online.
I mean, if it is relevant, I am 20, and I have been studying math seriously for ~3 years ( as long as I had this SE account xD)
So, let's give it a try for a few days and see if it seems like it's working?
Are you studying in college? Or independently?
Mostly independently, I plan on starting my undergrad next year
OK I didn't want to say this because it may give the impression that I am totally clueless
I have some clue, just not that much xD
Jul 26, 2022 06:00
Honestly...I suspect that this book is going to be too advanced in that case.
Unless you would classify yourself as extremely gifted, in which case maybe not.
Could we just try?
But like...it's the kind of book you would normally work through after have studied a bunch of other stuff.
Ummm...sure!
Why not.
I mean , there is nothing in particular to be lost with an attempt. And maybe you'll learn something about organizing these stuffs as well.
Yeah, maybe I will!
Okay so who is contacting who
Jul 26, 2022 06:01
Okay, good way to contact me is [email protected]
Okay
is there a bad wya to contact you then? xD
Phone is the bad way.
Fully formal person I suppose
Sent a mail.
Cool. Let's chat there going forward. I'm going to look around for a syllabus to follow and I'll get back to you tomorrow. I'm also going to look for others who might be interested, although I don't want more than 5 or 6 people.

Okay sure c:
So I guess you want to get to forcing...?
yes
that chapter is forcing (14)
Btw, I'm 33 and dropped out of a Ph.D. program right before starting the dissertation phase. And I live in Hawaii now.
Yeah, do you know what forcing is?
Like...have you heard of it?
Actually no
Is this even in undergrad syllabus? lol
Maybe later you might decide to create a separate chatroom and advertise it here: List of chatrooms. Maybe that might help attract some interested people, too.

No, like I said, this is a graduate textbook.
I have gone through books of many topics yet not even once I have heard this mentioned
Is it bad if I haven't heard of it xD
Okay, thanks for showing me that. I'm new to the SE chat.
Long time ago we tried to go through Kunen - but we stopped relatively soon. It was in this chatroom - but probably it is easier to create a new one rather than requesting the mods to unfreeze that one.
Ooh!
Umm...so this book and Kunen's cover a lot of similar material.
AFAIK
Well, I did not really went through either of them in full. I never studied forcing.

I think so where I live there is no 'advanced set theory' as a grad topic even
I have seen only stuffs like complex analysis, Differential Geometry etc
Forcing is a method that let's you prove that certain statements (such as the continuum hypothesis) cannot be proved from the ZFC axioms. So, it's used for proving independence results.
I think only some schools have grad classes in set theory.
What I'm thinking is, how can this be so hard when it's literally the most based on the most basic idea
I'm going to go for now, but let's keep in touch by e-mail.
Jul 26, 2022 06:11
like elementary notion. It's not standing on much so to speak
Nice chatting with you!
Okay, sure. Nice chatting with you too.
I'll have to go now. (Some stuff needs to be done IRL.)
If you want, feel free to let me know about your plans with studying Jech/forcing/set theory.

I have checked a bit various posts with recommendation concerning studying forcing.
I have searched for studying and text within the tag .
And I looked at the posts tagged forcing+book-recommendation and forcing+reference-request.
Halbeisen's book was mentioned in this post:

A: A nice introduction to forcing

user642796In addition to Asaf's recommendation above, I'll put a word in for Halbeisen's Combinatorial Set Theory: With a Gentle Introduction to Forcing. The book is divided into three parts. The first gives a basic introduction to axiomatic set theory along with some basic notions from combinatorial set...

I think this probably contains all I wish to know, though I'll probably need to spend some time selecting the material. :) I think it's important to mention that the book is available for free on the author's website: user.math.uzh.ch/halbeisen/publications/publications.html . — tomasz Sep 9, 2012 at 0:44

Adam Frank has some videos based on Jech's Set Theory - but only the first two chapters. I did not actually check how good they are - OTOH the first two chapters are mostly basics.
Here are the two playlists: Set Theory, Ch. 1 and Set Theory, Ch. 2.

It sounds like maybe we have a few more people interested in doing some graduate set theory? I'm interested in all of stuff in the first section of Jech, not just forcing. But I'm not set on Jech and would be open to other books such as Kunen. I've worked with both books to some extent, and have a slight preference for Jech's style. I was able to download a pdf of Jech, btw.
I've created a new chat room for this:
