I'm so going to make a movie "Attack of the IoT Devices".
It starts out as a benign firmware update to a printer that quickly spreads via all available means - malicious network packets, Bluetooth, covert audio, etc.
Zacharee1
audio?
Nathan Osman
The devices gain sentience and start acting maliciously.
@Zacharee1 Speakers can produce sounds too high for human ears but a microphone further away could pick it up.
It's a means of stealth communication.
Zacharee1
hmm
sounds slow
Nathan Osman
Meh, you could probably get dial-up speeds out of it.

The "S" in IoT stands for "security".
Zacharee1
7KILOBYTES PER SECOND
Nathan Osman
It's covert though, so it can take as long as it wants.
Zacharee1
LETS NOT GET CRAZY
what's the upload speed for dialup? same?
Serg
at max it's 54 kbps
i think
Zacharee1
oh

One of the scenes involves a rogue Roomba that starts the carpet on fire...
Zacharee1
I see what you mean
how does a roomba become an incendiary?
Nathan Osman
It's an electronic device.
All it has to do is an internal short to overheat.
Zacharee1
so it explodes?
Nathan Osman
And, best of all, exploding lithium batteries.
Yes.
Zacharee1
why not use the people who still have Note 7s?

They are their own problem.
:P
Zacharee1
boom
Nathan Osman
But back to the Roomba. Once the carpet is on fire, the Nest activates "emergency heat" mode and cranks the temperature up really high.
The home security system locks the occupants inside the house.
Zacharee1
supposedly, Samsung is going to be rereleasing refurbushed Note 7s in India with smaller batteries and different casings
this botnet is quite the botnet
if it can run on all these proprietary devices
Nathan Osman
The Wi-Fi router bricks itself but not before short circuiting its antenna and acting as a cellular jammer (never mind if this is possible or not).
Zacharee1
lol
Nathan Osman
Feb 25, 2017 22:26
So the occupants only have their home phone... and...
hmm...
How can the botnet deactivate it...
Zacharee1
use the DSL modem to send interfering signals
Nathan Osman
Maybe it's a cordless phone and the power gets cut.
Zacharee1
how does the power get cut
Nathan Osman
Fuse gets blown due to short circuit.
(I think of everything.)
Zacharee1
how
so walk down and turn the breaker on
Nathan Osman
Feb 25, 2017 22:28
How? A wayward appliance connects live to neutral. Boom. Instant circuit trip.
Zacharee1
so unplug it
Nathan Osman
That's the plot of the movie. The occupants have to figure out which device before it's too late.
Zacharee1
most people have separate breakers for different sections of the house
lol
Serg
there's the master breaker though
Nathan Osman
Maybe we should call this movie "IoT Wars".
