Anyone in the #InfoSec / #SysAdmin world want to help with interview questions for a company that makes email encryption products?
Thought you guys might be interested in this
OHAI
For some background, I got an email from someone that used the contact form on my blog. They work for or with or own or something to do with a certain company that makes some products to supposedly secure email. It's really a hosted service they offer, with an option for larger companies to bring the system in house.
Here's the company's products: ecryptinc.com/our-products
So the idea is, I'd like to interview them and grill them with some good questions about their products
If anyone is interested, it's not highly participatory so no worries about time or anything. Just send me any questions that you'd like them to answer. I'll take their answers and distribute them to interested people so that a second round of questions can be asked for further clarity.

@ScottPack @WesleyDavid It's a small world.
Sings Disney song
I actually got that from @ScottPack's retweet rather than looking here.
@JeffFerland Creeeeeepy.
Sep 27, 2011 18:36
@WesleyDavid Why does everybody say that about me when I point out obvious information? :(
@JeffFerland I think it's your Vincent Price intonation - and the blood stains.
@JeffFerland It's the turtleneck.
Oh yeah, the blood....
We have a pretty epic Halloween party if you're into big college town block parties.
@WesleyDavid "Given that NASDAQ delists stocks trading below $1, how can I be confident in the continued viability of your company?"
Sep 27, 2011 18:41
@JeffFerland Hot damn that's awesome!
@WesleyDavid As a service provider, they should have a SAS70 by now, and should be getting a SOC-2 or SOC-3 this year. Those will state the controls they follow and an auditor's review that they are (or aren't) followed.
@RoryAlsop I smell a blog post about this.
@JeffFerland You're on a roll! Blood is in the water. I bet they're going to regret the day they got in contact.
@ScottPack What's your mailing address? I have a patch I want to send you
@WesleyDavid THAT is creepy
@WesleyDavid How did you come across this company? They've booked no revenue on their financial statements.
@JeffFerland They came across me. They went to my blog's contact form and emailed me through that. They wanted to do a guest blog post on their products or do an interview.
I said I'd interview them but warned them that I'd be getting some hardass questions from infosec pros.
Alright... they're a newish company with no sales yet... so I'll be nice and try to focus on their tech.

@WesleyDavid You're a bad person.
Domain Name: ECRYPTINC.COM
Created on: 17-Apr-07
@WesleyDavid It's hard to figure out what they really do besides use SSL(I presume) for client connections and make sure that your data stays separate from somebody else's
@ScottPack If that line was what convinced you, you have some strange foibles.
@JeffFerland Yeah, really. It's just a hosted service to store email.
Even in their email to me they said "We're like dropbox, for emails"
Just sign up, invite the rest of your trusted executive team, and start using it. IT doesn’t need to know or get involved at all.
Ha!
@JeffFerland That is an abjectly terrifying statement.
@JeffFerland Ohhhhh snap. Did they really just say that?
I'm so pinning them down on that.

@ScottPack I mean yes, they're right... if you're going to be discussing corporate mergers or other sensitive internal information, that does help prevent leaks...
@JeffFerland Internal leaks
Although, if you're doing that, then you might want to keep to things like face to face
@ScottPack It's written in the context of corporate mergers.
If you can't trust internal IT to build a secure infrastructure... outsource it to nameless, faceless CLOUDS!! :throws glitter:
Yay cloud
@WesleyDavid Well, the issue is "abuse of exceptional trust"... and that is a real issue. I might have been hard on them by posting that.
My thoughts? I'm concerned they don't have revenue. They don't clearly state what they're doing to protect your privacy ("highest levels of encryption" -- big whoop). I want to know the actual technology and the control environment. I want to know how they recovery lost credentials.
Sep 27, 2011 19:04
@JeffFerland But... but... It's the cloud. You just use it. It makes you better.
If they are hacked or subpoenaed, can historical emails be read?
"Two dead people were pulled from a septic tank today" Sorry for this, but... that's a crappy way to die.

@JeffFerland Yeah, I want to know if they use disk or volume level encryption, or is it DB level?
@JeffFerland We had that happen here not too long ago.
As I recall, the ex-husband and in-laws stuffed the body down in a septic tank.
@ScottPack I strongly presume they died while working since OSHA is involved. It's likely due to the atmosphere in the confined space.
@JeffFerland Oh, ugh, yeah. That's rather unfortunate.
High methane environment down there.
I wonder if they were wearing respirators or just masks.
Sep 27, 2011 19:07
So where was the damned parakeet?
Canary, even.
Whoa, Tillamook Oregon?
I know that place.
It's a coastal cow town that makes the most awesome cheese you've ever eaten
and ice cream and milk
And, apparently, disreputable security companies.
Wow
> As of June 22, 2011, the Company had 134,798,552 shares issued and outstanding.
@ScottPack They don't seem disreputable. I think they have poor marketing.
"What does your company offer over using GMail with SSL?"
They consider Hushmail a direct competitor that offers a similar service
They might be just fine and perfectly reputable. I think they've simply failed to sell or effectively communicate why their product is secure.
Sep 27, 2011 19:25
Wow, they hardly make any money. They're desperate maybe? No wonder they're reading my blog.
Hmmm... if you self-describe yourself as "the fearless CEO" of your company, you get instant mega douche points.

> highest levels of encryption
Impossible nowadays, the best prime numbers have already been sacrificed to @ThomasPornin

@Mvy I know. I wanted to do a wikipedia tag on it. {{Cleanup}}
@Mvy Now all we have left are the small ones.
@WesleyDavid "The Company anticipates that Rhino Marketing will assist the Company with the establishment of a global marketing campaign which will include social networking, public appearances and speaking engagements, guest appearances on television and radio, community outreach programs such as speaking at schools about online privacy and security, strategic media buys, and podcasts."
Speaking at schools? I can see the draw. Right in between gym class and social studies. "Hey kids! Let's talk about encryption, keypairs, TEH CLOUDS and you!"
Sep 27, 2011 19:30
@WesleyDavid It would be worthwhile in colleges.
Littel kitteh haz teh cloudz
@WesleyDavid We answered the same question on Serverfault:
18
A: How do I monitor who's logged in?

WesleyDavidMonitor the event logs on the domain controllers for event 672. It will show all successful logon events for AD users and which computer they logged on from. Filter by computer to get logon events for only those computers that you are interested in.

So that was a fun exercise in due diligence. To be honest, I wouldn't blog about their product... I have little confidence it will exist next year.... but I might blog about this exercise.
@JeffFerland Thanks for the sleuthing! My plan was to organize the questions and then cite my contributors. Do you want your name mentioned in the footnote? You won't be tied to specific questions. Unless that's what you want.
@WesleyDavid Footnote is fine.
The Company does not currently have any full-time employees. Kasia Zukowska has been contracted by the Company to perform administrative duties on behalf of the Company. Gabriel Rosu has been contracted by the Company to perform software development duties and serve as the Chief Technology Officer for the Company. Brad Lever currently serves as the President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Financial Officer, and director of the Company without wages or salaries.
@JeffFerland LOLWUT
When was that?!
Sep 27, 2011 19:37
@WesleyDavid This year's financial report filed for the period ending March 31, 2011
@JeffFerland Wow. Tough times for everyone.
For the period ending June 30, 2011: Uncertainty as a Going Concern The accompanying financial statements have been prepared assuming that the Company will continue as a going concern. However, the Company has suffered recurring losses from operations since inception which raises substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern.
During the three months ended June 30, 2011, the Company had revenues of $200 as compared to revenues of $434 during the three months ended June 30, 2010
During the three months ended June 30, 2011, the Company had operating expenses of $156,938 as compared to operating expenses of $352,602 during the three months ended June 30, 2010
This is what bankruptcy looks like.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
Not well marketed, apparently. =(
And I guess no angel investors / VC funds wanted in on it.
OK, now I think he's unethical. I don't actually see anything linking that to Fox.
I run a tight ship at eCrypt. One of my more famous quotables is that “I know how to squeeze six cents out of a nickel” and that philosophy has allowed me to run our company successfully on very modest funding.
@WesleyDavid After everything I've just written here, would you?
Sep 27, 2011 19:56
Yikes.
Etch-a-sketch.
stretches I feel awesome for my due diligence work.
