We have the exact same question here, and I'm not at all satisfied with it:
I'm also noticing that "Letterism" is not the right term, since it's imposed on that method by people who disagree with it.

@JonEricson we say all questions must start from the text. Where that question is weak is that it starts from a text and a doctrine and gives them both equal weight. That's probably why it slipped under the radar - I think it should probably be closed. The spirit of our rule is that a question should start from the text only (or largely), isn't it?
I think this is a great example of where bh.se will succeed by side-stepping the kind of questions that just get us bogged down and keep it's focus on answerable questions

@JackDouglas Yep. I think it's a better question for C.SE, so we should close and edit in a pointer to the C.SE question.
