I wanted to do Digital Integrated Circuit Simulation for my final project. Anyone knows if there is scope of Research in it?
@NickHalden lol
@TobyLawrence It's not funny! I'm sick and I can't think, and my brain hurts, and the delete button doesn't work. I hate my life.
@NickHalden Which question?
@VinayakGarg You need to explain a bit more, what do you mean by "scope of research in it"? There is scope of research in everything, isn't there?
@Kortuk I agree... But proving the concept is best achieved by "giving them rope"... preferably with pecuniary punitive damages.
@AnindoGhosh just look at my most recent answers. it had something to do with op-amps and negative feedback. Olin got mad at me =(

Ya I need to elaborate - Below is the link to relevant question

Q: Virtual Breadboard design

Vinayak GargI am building a open source application in which digital circuits can be built on breadboard using IC, wires, LED and some off board components(clock, 7-segment etc). I have made a initial design of breadboard (through programming, not in image processor), i have some questions regarding this bre...

@NickHalden flag it and I can delete it.
@VinayakGarg Hello, dont think I have seen you in chat before.
@NickHalden Don't delete it. Edit it with a suitable contrite correction.
@Kortuk Hello. Its my first time here :)
@NickHalden I would agree, better to fix it and move forward if you have the energy and time.
@NickHalden Also, Olin getting mad isn't something to freak out over. Enough students the world over are being taught exactly what you wrote... What's he going to do, go over and spank every teacher over his knee?
Jan 7, 2013 16:03
@NickHalden but you can flag and I will delete.
@Kortuk Yeah, maybe I'll just leave it for a bit for when I'm feeling better.
@NickHalden Well, try feeling better sooner and fixing it :)
@Kortuk Maybe tonight. Gonna go try to survive work. See ya later guys.
ohh, if in negative feedback that is fine.
Professor is not satisfied with ordinary software project, they want research based project. I can think of "Circuit Minimization" and "Logic Optimization" Can you think of anything which will require reading some research paper for a Digital IC based Simulator?
Jan 7, 2013 16:08
@VinayakGarg Question: What degree level are you at? What course?
@AnindoGhosh BE in CS
@VinayakGarg And this is your final year project? Where?
@AnindoGhosh Yup, at college
@VinayakGarg Where? IIT, NSIT, etc?
What do you mean by "Digital IC based Simulator"?
Jan 7, 2013 16:10
@AnindoGhosh You know NSIT?? O_o
@VinayakGarg He is in Mumbai, I think.
@W5VO I suspect he means the digital logic equivalent of Spice? But that would require simulating MCUs and bunches of other parts.
@NickHalden you should just add in "with feedback applied" in your op-amp statement to satisfy the pedant. OP-amps w/o feedback are useless - even as comparators.
@rawbrawb With negative feedback*
@VinayakGarg Yes, I know NSIT very well, I've visited it often.
@VinayakGarg Hmm BE so not IIT
Jan 7, 2013 16:12
With positive feedback you get your schmitt trigger.
@Kortuk LOL
@AnindoGhosh creep out the new guy.
@W5VO Please take a look at (old) screenshot on my question link, probably that would explain best
@rawbrawb I agree... I think the pedantic reaction was a bit over the top.
@Kortuk No Delhi
Jan 7, 2013 16:13
@VinayakGarg I mean @AnindoGhosh is in Mumbai.
@Kortuk If the "new guy" says BE, and his profile says Delhi, well, it's pretty simple.
@AnindoGhosh and then his posse runs around and gives him points!
@AnindoGhosh Wow, NSIT isn't very popular. So its amzing
@VinayakGarg OK, so go look at the FB page of your professor Dhananjay Gadre... See the photos section. Search for my name. :-)
@rawbrawb He generally writes very good answers.
Jan 7, 2013 16:15
@rawbrawb Ooooooooh masterfully well-put!
@rawbrawb He just can be an arse sometimes.
@AnindoGhosh such a showoff.
@Kortuk s/sometimes//g
@Kortuk Well, why not? His prof was my prof 23 years ago. :-) And we still collaborate.
@AnindoGhosh :)
@VinayakGarg Anyway, enough of freaking you out. I'm very familiar with NSIT, including the Maggi Noodles in the canteen... Equally familiar with IIT-D, where I've taught as a guest faculty. Don't worry about all that. The reason I wanted to know was, to figure out what level of project you would need to do.
@Kortuk I agree, but there are two trends. 1) is total snark "why would you ask that?" - which he also complains about being subject too. 2) He can be wrong very wrong but assumes that because he can't do something that it can't be done.
Jan 7, 2013 16:19
@AnindoGhosh It seems a little stupid but how do I search your name in his photos?
Hey Kortuk or anyone, what's the 9679 number under my name here in chat?
@rawbrawb Ha. Just flag it if it is offensive.
@VinayakGarg Ahh just go to his friends list in FB, search there :-)
@AnindoGhosh it's the sum of your reputation across all the stackexchange sites
@AnindoGhosh your total rep on the network.
Jan 7, 2013 16:20
oh wow, ive had the chat window open all weekend.
@W5VO shuddup.
@W5VO I got a work call wakeup at 4am.
@rawbrawb I've spotted option 2 a couple of times.
@Kortuk Maybe you should prioritize being more responsive to users. I gave you like 5 seconds to answer the question
Thanks @Kortuk and @W5VO.
57 secs ago, by Kortuk
@W5VO shuddup.
Jan 7, 2013 16:21
@Kortuk LOL
yes LOL
@AnindoGhosh Ah found you. Nice :)
@Kortuk I think I'm going to report you to [email protected] for dereliction of duty
;)
@VinayakGarg How about this as a subject. Gray code counter generator for counter lengths that are of any arbitrary length esp those that are NOT 2^N (which is the easy case).
@VinayakGarg @AnindoGhosh != Nice
<--- != nice
@rawbrawb You typed while I was typing, no fair.

A: Handling Calls to Remove a Moderator

Shog9Moderator Action Review Process After much discussion, debate, reflection, consultation, frustration, revelation, constipation and inspiration, we've settled on the following process for allowing a team of moderators to remove one of their own. It is, by necessity, somewhat formal: this process...

@W5VO Come at me bro.
@AnindoGhosh man you are in a world of hurt if you have the same thoughts as I do.
@VinayakGarg So tell me, what's the brief your prof gave you? Broad guidelines? Maybe we can structure a good project idea out of that. Also, is this BE-1 or BE-final, or what?
@Kortuk Bollocks, the easiest way to remove a moderator is to /ignore him. :-)
@AnindoGhosh, @rawbrawb : I am more of software guy. But my second (or third) interest is Digital Circuits. So I would want a project in software. My current idea is mix of both
Jan 7, 2013 16:25
@AnindoGhosh haha
@rawbrawb Why do I find myself nodding in agreement?
barely known fact, if you suspend a moderator the diamond overrules it and we can continue as normal.
@AnindoGhosh who are you writing too? Who are you ignoring?
@AnindoGhosh Final year. We aren't given any guidelines :p We have to figure them out on our own
@rawbrawb Me.
Jan 7, 2013 16:27
@rawbrawb Context-free. Please run that past me again, a bit more slowly... I'm in single-digit-IQ mode.
@VinayakGarg OK, so to start with - If it's Dhananjay, he'll expect a project that has practical application and fills a specific gap. So replicating Fritzing or improving it in a small way won't work. Fair point?
@AnindoGhosh I keep seeing sided sided conversations with a Kortuk? I beleive his name is. USed to be a mod on this site but is now persona non-grata, but I can't be sure.
@rawbrawb I'm not actually ignoring anybody today... I added one ignore yesterday, I need to un-ignore that sometime today, but I've forgotten how to do that. (single-digit IQ mode)
@rawbrawb Hush, you! If I laugh out loud like that again, the esteemed spouse will have me committed!
@AnindoGhosh it's obviously a poor attempt at humor/humour, just ignore me too.
@AnindoGhosh so you're not in a committed relationship with her already?
@rawbrawb It was worth the price I paid for it. ;-)
@rawbrawb Just not committed to the nice men in the white overcoats.
@AnindoGhosh I wouldn't approach Gadre sir. Would I? I will be doing it under a CS prof. I don't want to replicate Fritzing. In fact I haven't looked at it properly. Fair enough
Jan 7, 2013 16:31
@AnindoGhosh TMI
Hold on, I think we freaked poor new guy Vinayak out entirely, with multiple threads of conversation.
@AnindoGhosh nope, I am a little slow
@VinayakGarg OK cool. So if it's a CS project, and you do want to bring in a hardware angle, think carefully about the gap you will be filling. Explain that to yourself, or to me, and I think we can take it up from there.
@Kortuk Didn't realize there was finally a process in place.
@VinayakGarg then you are talking to the perfect expert(Stares at @AnindoGhosh)
@W5VO It was discussed for a while, clearly not something we need, but I am sure someone has. Based on TL I have seen at least one site blow up.
Jan 7, 2013 16:33
@Kortuk :)
@Kortuk Heh
@AnindoGhosh You smiled :)
@Kortuk I do that sometimes. Today's Smileday
@NickHalden +1 your answer and edited it to add in the feedback detail. Hope you don't mind. Don't sweat Olin so much.
Vinayak, I need to AFK a bit... but my email / phone / other contact channels are all out there, scribble me a summary of what you think your project ought to be and why, and I'll try to help... Plus, I'm online here a lot anyway.
Jan 7, 2013 16:36
@AnindoGhosh I just want to replicate (in software) what I did (on hardware) in one of the DIC lab. The old page for the project
@AnindoGhosh That means a lot to me! Thanks
@VinayakGarg If you cannot find my email address, I won't help you. Bye for now. I'm hungry. :-)
AFK a bit, EEfolx
I will send request on FB
Jan 7, 2013 16:49
@AnindoGhosh I found your email and phone. But keeping it so open seems insane (to me atleast)
Jan 7, 2013 17:04
@VinayakGarg He is a popular guy. He is used to the public calling.
@VinayakGarg I like to call him and practice my marathi.
(Not really, I dont know a word)
@Kortuk O_o
@VinayakGarg ;)
@AnindoGhosh The purpose of the site is pedantic.
@ThePhoton Ha. That detail is important, but more easily edited in then a comment written.
Am back briefly. What did I miss?
@VinayakGarg Ahhh... Umm, if you notice, anindoghosh.com has my contact information, and I've been in every English national daily across India for nearly a decade. My info is public by the nature of my other career. Of course, I have a separate phone for personal contacts, that isn't public.
Jan 7, 2013 17:09
@AnindoGhosh And for some reason he hangs up when I speak unintelligible marathi. The longer it takes him to hang up the better I am doing.
@AnindoGhosh ohhh perhaps now I can remember reading your name
@ThePhoton I guess my comment was not sufficiently pendantic in providing context... My point was that the pedantic comment (i.e. the comment made by that person) was over the top - not that being a pedant was over the top. :-)
I need a very cheap way to connect a speaker to my PCB. I was thinking direct solder the wires but that would increase production time/cost.
Right now we are using screw terminals = $$$$$$$$
@dext0rb Cheaper than wire? Tin foil from discarded cigarette packs?
@dext0rb Umm, a connector that is screw down? Or just solder it. Soldering it does not require a connector.
@dext0rb Yes, just solder them down. Nothing is going to be cheaper.
Jan 7, 2013 17:10
@dext0rb Umm springs, if the occasional pop / click won't matter.
Hrm.
@VinayakGarg Just not in the context of electronics, or android software, or other techie stuff, I guess ;-)
I will go with soldered wires and see what the boss comes back with.
@AnindoGhosh Still expensive and those should not bounce at all normally.
@dext0rb I am betting on a kick in the teeth
@Kortuk Oh great. So we're back to collecting discarded cigarette packs!
Jan 7, 2013 17:13
@Kortuk Why teeth kick?
OMG I just asked a friend on chat "Do you know Anindo Ghosh?"
Reply : "the photographer or something like that"
:D
@VinayakGarg Ha.
He has a couple pictures on here that he posted that are amazing.
@Kortuk I just noticed the costly Nikon :p

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2013

Grace NoteAs it is December 2012, we are now going to reset our Community Promotion Ads for the new year. What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar. The purpose of this question is the vetting pro...

People go upvote the robotics and scifi ads.
@Kortuk I'm surprised that we have so many ads up
Jan 7, 2013 17:16
@W5VO I am happy!
@W5VO I get a giggle when people find out we have a really active chat room.
Hell, what is the chance you come in with a question and someone in chat knows your professors.
@Kortuk :)
@Kortuk I sense extortion possibilities here ;)
@VinayakGarg seriously though, think about that. What is the chance.
still pretty small
@rawbrawb haha
@TobyLawrence maybe even someone whom has working PS2.
Jan 7, 2013 17:17
@Kortuk 10^-6
@VinayakGarg Well played sir.
And to add that a famous photographer
Actually you'd be surprised at the connectedness represented. We should playthe equivalent of the Bacon number game ...
