im guessing you didnt graduate high school
Bob
Bob
Firefox has an about:preferences!
Never knew that O_O
@allquixotic yeah but knowing technologies is not that relevant in getting a degree
@Hellovart Actually, I have a degree in computer science and I'm a practicing engineer.
logic in a programming language means everything
that's what we learn
@barlop If your goal is to get a degree, you can do that by just reading books and lecture notes. I had assumed (perhaps wrongly) that he was getting the degree because he was interested in getting a job in software engineering.
Apr 3, 2014 23:43
im intestered in getting a job period
Bob
Bob
Lemme just say, I'm currently in Uni and working as a programmer, and what I've learnt in Uni is almost completely irrelevant to my job.
software engineering sounds like shit
The things you need to know and do to get the one are so dramatically disjoint from the things you need to know and do to get the other, that it's ridiculous to even contemplate a software engineering job without having any practical experience.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic this.
And I don't mean writing code for assignments in school. That's not experience.
Apr 3, 2014 23:44
you're talking about co op
Writing code for assignments in school is "experience" in the same way as playing on a playground is experience in driving a coach bus.
how quaint
tell me, what the fuck am i supposed to do then
not do my assignments and workshops?
@Hellovart: That and learn to really do the thing you want to do.
@Hellovart First of all, knock off the attitude. Second, get involved in an open source project. Pick something you're interested in, ideally something that involves some technologies that you've at least heard of before, download the source code, read their wiki docs on contributing, and try to cook up a few simple patches, and work from there.
i make video games on my own time? but that isnt practical is it
Apr 3, 2014 23:46
@Hellovart Making games is practical experience, yes. But are you just modding, or did you actually write an engine (or write a game based on some other engine)?
with databases, the theory is the hard part no one really gets. The syntax, you can pick up as you need it, often with little idea what you're doing ;p
i mean i write my own games from scratch
i dont like using other imported libraries
from the internet
extensions or whatever you call it
I have a friend that got a job testing software and he really took off after that
yes journeyman i agree with that
in terms of sql but not programming
@Hellovart When you do that, what kinds of technologies do you use? OpenGL? Direct3D? TCP sockets? UDP? XML? An audio library?
Apr 3, 2014 23:48
none of those,
OK, then what?
when i was learning c# in highschool, i made 2d games on the forms
c++, we only work with console, text based games
Bob
Bob
@Hellovart That would be GDI (really, GDI+) abstracted by WinForms.
java on my own time, learned by myself, 2d even thought its a bitch
Hi guys I need some help
Apr 3, 2014 23:49
i think you have the wrong form
I have an app that is not responding to my click or anything
i mean the standard form
But windows is not showing "blabla is not responding" window, what does that mean?
it means you close the program and reopen it
I also looked in the process manager and it's ram is not chaning
Apr 3, 2014 23:50
@Hellovart You would benefit enormously from using "other imported libraries from the internet". The skill of learning how to use other libraries will be very valuable to you in a programming career. Having knowledge of stuff besides console I/O will make you hireable.
and if it still freeze, check your task manager
@Hellovart I have about 1 horu worth of work in it the app
@allquixotic i see
vader, then you're fucked man, i dont know what to say, you can wait till it unfreezes
are there not tricks to play?
@Vader If you can't afford to lose the work, and the program isn't responding, you're kind of in a rough spot. You can definitely kill the program using task manager "End Process Tree" (force-kills it), but you'll lose data.
Apr 3, 2014 23:51
windows is a piece of shit, no tricks allowed
actually it is not frozen
so it unfrozed, congratulations
there is a dialouge window of screen somehwere
take a screenshot and paste it here
if it isnt frozen, save your work....
Apr 3, 2014 23:53
@vader is it so hard to close that
Problem is that the window on the left is in some kind of full screenmode
Bob
Bob
@Vader It means that the program is still accepting input.
It may not be processing it, but it's responding to the messages Windows sends it.
@Bob I know that now. But how can I get rid of the dialouge window?
Bob
Bob
As far as Windows is concerned, it's still responsive.
nvm fixed it
Apr 3, 2014 23:57
@Vader you may be able to use Object Spy or similar to force close the offending HWND
Bob
Bob
@Vader I dunno. Can't load that screenshot at the moment, gimme a minute.
@Vader Great!
Well this is a pretty shitty bug
@Hellovart software engineers do lots of "plumbing", connecting things already written and making something cool.. I have a friend that isn't that interested in languages, and not that interested in algorithms themselves, just in the product.. and that's the kind of mentality for a job
he did a job testing computer software, I think that might have been what exposed him to many technologies, and helped set him off..
@barlop I have basically that mentality
I'm a "tester plus" hehe... test and write software :)
please, if you can write software, you can test software
i can make a console say "Hello world"
Apr 4, 2014 00:01
@Hellovart yeah nobody is saying testing software is going to be hard for somebody that can write games it may well be -easy- for you, but it'd expose you to many technologies, that's my point
that should get me a job, right?
Bob
Bob
@Hellovart Uh, no.
@Hellovart be sensible.
yes, yes, i am doing all what you people are talking about in the last two semesters
and that was a joke
don't get a job as a comedian
Apr 4, 2014 00:02
why not, communication is also a big part
if someone screws me, i curse at them
communications
Bob
Bob
@Hellovart Please stop with the personal attacks.
