@Nick maybe @bertieb should get one so he can play doom 3 (at 0.01 fps) :)
err, i mean ethernet over power
Sep 22, 2022 19:43
@William Actually, I'm serious! I want to try it sometime, obviously in a local lab environment, but I want to see what, if anything, could work for 4 conductors

did you at least try it?
> how do I run ethernet poorly over 4 wires?
wouldn't that require non standard connections
like splicing wires and stuff like that
Sep 22, 2022 23:12
Doesn't sound like he did
Sep 22, 2022 23:42
@William have you done any research at all? πŸ€”

@William uh I mean you've been spitballing theory over 3 days πŸ˜…
Without a lot of the fundamental knowledge that's needed. We're happy to share things but... I feel like the practical knowledge to do what you're trying to do is lacking

Q: What would be the disadvantages of using a 4 stranded ethernet cable?

Journeyman GeekI got this cable with a homeplug AV 200 device - its labelled cat 5e But looking at the plug end has me rather dubious about it. (There's only 4 strands there, not the standard 8 - and missing pins, so I suspect these cables are designed to do so. The wire jacket is also surprisingly loose)....

@William That page though... So many contradictory statements!
oh god so cursed
and no
that's meant to connect a phone line phone to ethernet :D
so you can use existing ethernet cabling for phones
What you need is even more cursed
Sep 23, 2022 02:07
@JourneymanGeek For some reason, I seem to remember being told you can't do IPv6 on 10mbps connections... I'm wondering if that's something you ran into
@CanadianLuke .....
Yes
I don't understand why
Larger header requiring a larger packet size? Or it just expects a faster cable
@CanadianLuke different layers. Shouldn't care
My theory is that 4 wired cables are just cursed.
I agree
Even in 2014 standards
lol
I upgraded to 'gigabit' capable homeplug (that gets me 300mbps) at some point
nothing better since from what I can tell
Sep 23, 2022 02:10
But, to go with Ohm's Law, we must double the number of copper wires every few years... So I'm going to run 16-pin Ethernet cables :P
@CanadianLuke naw, actually better shelding
you can go up to 10 gigabit with cat 5 over short distances
I got the kit but there's no really compelling use cases for someone at home
Assuming you have a good switch that handles 10g. That'll be my next major purchase, I think. At this point, I have a bunch of thin clients
I have a few suggestions
Plex and streaming
I have a unifi one that's about 300ish, and does 4 ports
If I was doing it now and might pick up a SFP capable 8 port switch off aliexpress and put in a mix of tranceievers
Sep 23, 2022 02:12
Is there any licensing with Ubiquity stuff? I got caught with Meraki wanting licensing to continue working
probably adds up to the same cost per post
@CanadianLuke naw
need a controller for initial setup but no licencing
Good. I think licensing network equipment is stupid
The controller can be a docker image I heard, too?
yup
I'm still not sure how the new network setup will be
Right now, I got 3 servers running (one is only for NFS, no other software installed). I'd love for them to have 10g connections between each other. I got two of them in a bond with the switch
ah so
I've not tested it, but I was looking at aliexpress.com/item/1005004031586434.html
a flex XG is a decent option too if you're going full copper (1 1gbe switch + 4 10G switches POE powerable)
I have one of those, its nice
What're you looking at for the NICs?
Sep 23, 2022 02:19
This is why I don't trust AliExpress anymore
ah lol
they're standard power supplies
Ideally, I want to try fiber... But not until I get a proper rack, cause I don't want to be unplugging and replugging constantly like I am now
ah
that's actually a little cheaper
and you can use DAC cables
The wife and I moved into a new house last December, and we're still getting renos done, but very slowly. Networking can wait, I got Wi-Fi :P
lol
Still waiting on my new place
Sep 23, 2022 02:21
Is it picked out yet? Or still saving up?
uhhhh
Yes, yes, but it got delayed by covid
Ahhh that sucks :(
so I got the money, I know where it is and what's the rough layout
but none of the more important details
Are you building it?
uh
Public housing
Sep 23, 2022 02:22
What's that?
so the government is paying someone to :D
Oh cool!
@CanadianLuke most housing here is flats built by the government
I booked it... 2019ish
was supposed to be finished... now... but it got delayed up to a year past that
Its a very similar layout to this
I didn't know that. Our government is building housing, but far from allowing anyone to customize it
Oh, its not customised
even less than the one I linked
Sep 23, 2022 02:27
That still looks pretty nice
I gotta run though
This is a previous 'version' so they have TV connections (which I'd have to price out at replacing with MOCA)
and from what I was told 4 ethernet connections 2 in the living room, one in the bedroom and one in the little shelter
seeya :D

@JourneymanGeek really? I thought cat 5e was 1 Gbps and cat 6 is 10Gbps (max length 50 meters)
cat 6a is 10Gbps over the full 100m
@Michael for small lengths cat 5e does 10Gbps fine
oh that's cool
I have actual 10 gig gear and tested it
(wanted to use up a flexi spending allowance before I quit :D )
I was benchmarking tho
I don't actually have anything that could max it out :D
