Hi @Caleb and/or @El'endiaStarman, could I ask you a quick question about Christianity.SE's site policies? We're trying to scope out site policies for Hinduism.SE and Buddhism.SE, and I thought it would be nice to be able to get some input from you guys, since you've been doing this for a lot longer than we have.
@senshin Of course. You're also asking over at Judaism.SE and Islam.SE for their perspectives, right?
@El'endiaStarman I suppose I ought to, but on these particular issues, I don't think their viewpoints will be substantially different. So, anyway - we've been getting some questions like "Did [some Hindu scripture] predict [such and such event]?".
I imagine you guys have had to deal with similar questions, a la "Did the Book of Revelation predict [latest terrible thing happening in the world]?". How do you deal with these questions?
My sense is that they ought to be closed, but I'm not sure for what reason. Maybe primarily opinion-based?
@senshin ...interestingly enough, I don't remember seeing very many of those questions. However, I agree with your intuition that they should be closed. Either primarily opinion-based or too broad would work. Now, if the question is modified to ask if person X believes that scripture Y predicted terrible event Z, then that I would leave open. That sort of question is more objectively answerable.
The thing is that we don't just want the opinions of the average Joes visiting the site. That's just too broad and also usually primarily opinion-based.
@El'endiaStarman Right, that's what I was thinking - we can certainly talk about what other religious scholars claim the scriptures predict, because that can have interesting impacts on the practice of religion and can be answered by reference to their writing, but Average Joe probably doesn't have anything useful to say on the matter.
