Welcome to Project Update Thursday
Council will now hear your tales and grievances.
Started work to convert the tub in the backyard, back into a hot tub.
more water in the basement, but my big DIY project this week was inserting a copper shim under my wife's graphics card heatsink in her laptop...
Found that the heating element was still good, but since the posts were so corroded I busted one removing the connector.
Now I have to replace the heating element, the pump fuse (which was likely the only fault), and possibly the pressure switch.
Replaced more toilet guts, caulked around the shower, my contribution to the family cottage has been made for the year. Hopefully it survives another rental season.

Rototilled the lawn, got a truckload of good dirt dumped on it, and am in the process of raking it out.
@ChrisCudmore Did you mow the garden?
Nah. I had to kill the lawn and restart it. I was having compaction issues.
But the rototiller will just mix any weeds back into the ground.
You should have used a sod cutter.
I raked out all the crap.
@ChrisCudmore how about aerating? Take a bunch of plugs. I do that once or twice a year.

Tried it last year. Didn't help.
Moot point anyways. It's too late to do whatever it is I should have done.
I'm thinking about digging a dry well for one of my gutters to flow into, but I'm not sure how wide to dig it.
I've read 4' deep x 4' wide, but that seem excessive.
@Tester101 If your wife tells you size doesn't matter, don't believe her.
It's only 1 down spout, and the roof is only covering an 18'x20' section of the house (not sure on the slope of the roof, since I haven't checked it).
Soil is clay, so it probably doesn't drain well.
40 1/2" of average annual precipitation.
With that size roof, in a 1" storm you're talking about 36 cubic ft of water
And a 4x4x4 hole gives you 64 cubic feet before you fill it in with stone or anything else
@Tester101 get a rain barrel
May 2, 2013 19:21
@waxeagle I like that idea.
I like the rain barrel idea, just don't let it freeze
@waxeagle You G&L people are handy to have around.
@Tester101 its one of the improvements I'm going to make soon. I've got well over 2600 sq ft of roof
that's a lot of rain to catch
Eventually I'm going to pipe all the rain water out to the storm sewer, it's just not a good time to dig a big trench along each side of the house right now.
have storm water run off fees been a big deal in your area? I know it was a big todo in chattanooga a couple yearsa go
May 2, 2013 19:29
@Tester101 Are you going to shove another pipe in a hole? I'd think you'd be getting bored of that by now.
@BMitch not a hole, a trench.
@Tester101 trench >> hole
i've had some shitty days in IT but today takes the cake...
Did somebody say CAKE?
there was cake an icecream for a vp's b-day today... I didn't go

If I ever started a company, employees would get their birthday off.
and profit sharing wouldn't be based on salary.
because that's just stupid.
Also, it's annoying when people say "we just remodeled our kitchen". When in reality, they hired a contractor to remodel their kitchen.
@lsiunsuex Cheer up. When you get home you get to do back breaking physical labor.

Lol, I'd star that if I was trying to get you in trouble.
any earth shattering issues get solved here today?
May 2, 2013 20:58
I just helped the family get their cottage ready for the rental season, changing out toilet valves, caulking, etc.
I always have enough trouble all by myself, don't need any help. hehe
maintenance is important. someone has to do it right
There are some questions about speeding up caulk curing if you have any insights.
This is gonna be my last house. go out with a bang
what kind of caulking, interior or exterior?
You're going out with a bang with a beautiful busty lady? Does your wife know? lmao
hehehe not telling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

He was doing the kitchen sink.

Q: Can I accelerate caulk drying by using a fan or heater on it?

MarkEFrom what I've found online, caulking takes 24-48 hours to dry. For my purposes, I need to apply caulking to my kitchen sink. However, I am in a time crunch, so I would like to know how caulking dries. Specifically, can the dry time be sped up to less than 24 hours if I direct some fans at the c...

u using silicone or an acriylic?
It's not me.
I just figured if anyone knew how, it would be you.
silicone cures with oxygen in the air. you really can't rush it. as long as it is in room temps, not much is gonna speed it up
it is like urethane
But once it skins up, a drop of water won't hurt it, will it?
the solvent dries fast and gives you a skim dried coat, but the rest needs oxygen to cure
a little won't, but a lot will. incidental contact will be OK. don't try to remove the water

So fill your glass, but don't wash the dishes.
yep
just be careful or shield the area
I'm going to close up PUT before I forget, but don't let that kill the conversation.
Thanks for joining this week's PUT
