Welcome to Project Update Thursday!
What's that?
By which I mean, what is the intent of "Project Update Thursday"?
Well.
It's for our users to share their projects in a space that's better for it. It's a way to build up support for a blog. It's a way to connect this community. And it's a way for me to not be alone in this chatroom. :)
Sounds like a "last shall be first" kind of answer, but ok :)
Our current project is "save up a metric crap-ton of money to afford two new HVAC systems"...
house built in 1940 - ductwork was never done properly for AC - AC died jsut before Irene, so we've decided to split the house into two zones
which means we need to upgrade the panel to 200A (was planned anyway) ... so... metric crap-ton o' money
never used this chat engine before - cute the way users "float" in

no new project updates from me, this past weekend I was busy carrying my home through the woods and building my bedroom next to a waterfall
(aka I went camping)
That or you had your bathroom redone by the same guys that did oscilatingcretin's
:)
details screwed up like that always make me worry that something else worse is wrong
Yeah - how much force should you have to use to install a liner anyway? What did he do, swing from it like a chimpanzee?
@TheEvilGreebo it's always troubling when that's a real possibility.
@TheEvilGreebo I've heard contractors are descended from chimps

Hey - you guys will appreciate this - my mother in law has copper drains: picasaweb.google.com/106945064958447877272/CopperDrainPipes
I couldn't believe it when she told me, had to take pics
that's old school.
I'm tempted to steal her house for scrap ;)
Rip out the copper and install PVC, might pay for itself and the HVAC repairs.
if they were gold maybe... copper isn't quite so valuable YET... so I'm waiting ;)
Last I checked it was ~$4.00/lbs.
Sep 22, 2011 19:19
that pipe alone is probably 3-4 lbs
(okay, more like 10-15, if I'm being real.)
@auujay hey there! I haven't seen you in a while, how's life?
Doing alright. Last weekend we worked on our bathroom remodel.
Got the drywall hung and a first coat of mud.
Plus hung the new door (well old door in a new location and frame)
tell us more!
I should really put pictures up were everyone can see them. Currently they are only on facebook. When I get home I will put them up on picasaweb for everyone to checkout.
I am almost ready to order tile, we are pretty much set on one (florimusa.com/en/prods-168-1.asp) but not finalized on a color.
We want to do one color for the tub/shower surround and another for the floor.
Probably 'almond' (florimusa.com/en/prod-168-1758-almond.asp) on the floor and 'beige' or 'noce' on the walls around the tub.
Ooh, porcelain
don't drop any... sharp sharp sharp
wow, there are actually people here
Sep 22, 2011 19:34
/me denies being people
/ ping 10 10 158.92.45.1
you are in fact a person
It is a small bathroom and I originally planed on using 12x12 for everything, but I have some samples and they are really heavy. Makes me a little worried about putting them on the wall. They also have a 9x12 wall tile (it is 20% thinner) that would be a bit lighter but I don't know if I like that look.
I dunno what you just pinged but it wasn't me ;)
wasn;t supposed to be
auujay: a good back buttering and a heavy thinset mix should hold that fine till it sets
Sep 22, 2011 19:37
@allindal yes there are. welcome!
@TheEvilGreebo put an @ in front and s/he'll get an alert. :)
Oh is THAT what the @ is for...
and nice, autocomplete on tab
Because this room is so busy it is hard to see who is talking to who
/sarcasm
Sorry were you talking to me?
</snark>
@auujay now I'm just playing with the user interface, don't mind me...
@TheEvilGreebo, do I look for oa specific type of "heavy" thinset mix or do you mean just don't use too much water to thin it out.
?
@auujay hey, it's important to know these things. i get @lerts when i'm not around, as well, so that's part of their use.
Sep 22, 2011 19:40
@auujay I just mean dont use too much water - think creamy peanut butter
Jif, not Peter Pan ;)
@auujay what color grout are you thinking of using?
with the 'almond' I was thinking a white as I think that can look pretty sharp with an offwhite tile. for the beige wall tiles I don't know something subtle.
I am worried about trying to keep white grout clean inside the shower.
Sometimes a darker grout looks good with light tiles, makes the tiles pop a bit more.
My wife cleans houses and hates grout cause its impossible to clean
save future grief, put mildew colored grout in the shower ;)
The floor I ripped out had about 4" white square tiles with thick brown grout lines.
Sep 22, 2011 19:47
it was white when it was installed ;)
it was not great looking, but mostly the huge grout lines and small tiles
@auujay have a look at this
/me waves goodbye
@TheEvilGreebo later
byee @TheEvilGreebo
so it's just the five of us.
I wonder where @KarlKatzke is.
usually he pops in beforehand and does a pep rally...of sorts.
Sep 22, 2011 19:58
Didn't he say something about not being around this week, in last weeks chat?
oh yeah.
Probably. I know ChrisF and SteveJackson can't make it this week, either.
so we're just missing three. and we had two new faces! very exciting.
So I just won an 18-Vold Lithium Ion Drill from Lowe's
i feel powerful.
nice
yeah i'm kinda proud. i keep talking about it.
Plus, as Tuesday was my birthday, this is kind of like the best belated birthday gift ever.
nice, lookout world, @AarthiDevanathan is on the loose... with power tools.
Landlords going to hate you when he sees all the holes you put in the walls with it.
Sep 22, 2011 20:03
@BMitch yeah this might prove ~dangerous~ for all involved. Otoh, I can make that storage ottoman now.
@Tester101 actually, I don't intend to, since I don't intend on living here after my lease is up
You have to test that thing out on something... walls are easier to patch than the floor.
@Tester101 I was going to build something.
idk what. maybe a storage ottoman
actually, that's a good question: if I drill holes in the drywall (with my metal studs) how would I fill them?
just some spakle will fill small holes fine
if you punch a really big hole you will need to fill it with something solid first
the metal studs should not impact patching drywall later
at least I can't think of how it would matter.
Sep 22, 2011 20:20
hmm. good to know!
A+ our site is awesome.
so, uh, how was your day / week?
Sep 22, 2011 20:41
Just popping in. Sorry, I was sick last night and forgot what day it was.
no worries. we've been quiet of late. it'll pick up, i'm sure.
Oh hey! Karl! high fives
GUESS WHAT KARL.
I WON A KOBALT DRILL. FROM LOWES.

Sep 22, 2011 20:46
We'll corrupt you into a tool-hoarding home impovement snob yet. :D
