12:07 AM
oh man
fire coral
my dad showed me that stuff about a month ago
and I have seen more than just one kind of fish that basically "makes sand"
lol
some of them make more refined sand than others though

7 hours later…
7:13 AM
Can somebody give this guy the "if you have a question, make it a post" talk? I'm not available right now.

3 hours later…

A: What's the status of the birthday contest?

Grace NoteA little update on this. So, I met with the mods and we were planning to do a little surprise ceremony for this. We'd jump into chat during an active time, and rather than having drawn the winners and announce them, we were going to do a public drawing, using our chat dice system. It seemed that...

10:55 AM
@GraceNote That's... what, about 11 hours from now?
I don't think I did that conversion right.
Okay, Monday 1800 EDT is.... 0800 Tuesday for me, and at least one other participant. That's 11 hours and... harum.
@Magician [poke]
Also [poke] @waxeagle.

that's dinner time (or drive time in the case of today) for me.

An hour later would be better for me, though I could do an hour earlier too.
8-9am is "supervise my dad's swim" time.
What time would be better for you?

11:11 AM
hello

Heyo.
How do you feel about this?
That's 0800 tomorrow morning for us, if I've done my maths right.

there's no way i'd be awake at 8am
9-10 is doable

9 is better for me. By ten I should be getting ready for my dad's birthday.

9 then

That's two votes for 9, and one "can't do 8" from wax without (yet) suggestions for alternates.

11:15 AM
An hour later?

Aye.

I can do an hour later.

Two of us will be there!
Actually--I can do ten too (two hours later) if that's better for waxeagle.
So, @waxeagle, would 1900 or 2000 be better for you?
@GraceNote Thanks for being accommodating, and for taking this up in the middle of things.

It ain't my schedule I gotta work around, hehe. I'm okay at any time.

1 hour later…
12:29 PM
@BESW 2000 is typically better for me, yes

@waxeagle I can do either 1900 or 2000, so if you and @Magician and @GraceNote can work that out...

20:00 being 10am here?

20:00 it is!

Time is stupid

@Magician Aye.
@Magician Aye.

12:33 PM
Excellent, I support this plan.

I won't be able to stick around for as long, but I'll be more likely to arrive on time.

I'll still likely have to set alarm clock :P

Oh, I'd happily sleep through this whole thing if I didn't supervise my dad's swim at 0800.

@Magician for 10 am on a tuesday? oh to be an academic (or whatever profession allows for this)

@waxeagle Graphic designer with long-distance clients, for me.

12:36 PM
Merely part-time job. It has its benefits.

@BESW not having kids is also a big boon to sleeping in :)

@waxeagle Indeed!
I don't look forward to my father returning to the point he was at three years ago, when my mother and I had to spell each other nights.
Probably good practice for parenthood though.

@BESW yes, I was about to say that's eerily like having an infant

If infants are convinced that only they can save the Chinese embassy from ninjas, they're less able to both articulate it and try to do something about it at 3am.
But... yes.

@BESW lol no, they are significantly easier to deal with. clean butt, full tummy is usually enough

12:42 PM
Aw.
Sundowning is A Thing in this house, sadly.

well I mean, they could want to save the Chinese embassy from Ninjas...but we'll never know, and their attention spans are very short

The weird thing is that he not only has a personality change, he remembers things from the previous nights during the night but doesn't remember them during the day.

@BESW very interesting. the brain is a fascinating organ, both in it's unexpected successes and it's incredibly failures.

@waxeagle Another strange thing is that his mother-in-law had a stroke last year and exhibited almost identical dementia-related behaviors.

@BESW so very strange.

12:46 PM
Not just "oh, yeah, dementia makes people weird" stuff: identical communication quirks, identical kinds of behavioral anomalies, the works. They're halfway across the world from each other and haven't seen each other for nearly six years.

I have a very good friend whose daughter's got strep A about a month after she was born, destroyed half her brain. Yet so far she is completely normal developmentally 2 years later.
@BESW that's crazy.

@waxeagle Oh, wow.

@BESW doctors are pretty impressed :). Like I said, the brain is a crazy, crazy organ.

My dad has bouts of near-total lucidity, but one of his quirks is that whatever condition he's in at the moment is the condition he has always been in: happy, sad, in pain, confused, understanding. It drives the doctors nutty trying to get a handle on his actual condition.
@waxeagle My grandmother's recovering very well from her stroke, about as well as they could possibly have expected, but she lost her math.
She was a math teacher for homebound students most of her life, and read theoretical multiple-dimension stuff for casual relaxation. Now she's just... lost math.

@BESW that has to be incredibly painful

12:52 PM
yeah. At least my dad doesn't know what he's lost most of the time.
My grandmother gets sad whenever my mother comes to visit, and says "Oh, she doesn't want to see me. I can't talk about math with her anymore." (My mother was the only one of her kids who really talked about that stuff with her.)

@BESW I do computer works for a couple of men in their 80s and 90s and both of them regularly forget things they know they should remember and it frustrates them to no end. Both were doctors and are fiercely indpendent...

Oh, yeah. Doctors. They have an insane amount to cram into their heads, especially from that generation.
The computer learning center I teach at sometimes gets contracts from the Veterans' Affairs, to do vocational training and vocational therapy. It's a real mixed bag.

@BESW I could see that. I tried to take over a guy who left town's computer repair business and I'm just not any good at it. But these guys need more of a tutor and someone to cross check them on their accounting so that fits well with my skill set.

That's good, then.
I teach MS Word, and the Adobe design properties: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator...

@BESW cool.

1:19 PM
SlyFlourish has released his mini book on running epic tier D&D 4e games under CC: slyflourish.com/sly_flourishs_running_epic_tier_dd_games.html

@JonathanHobbs Hi!

I've read it when he first released it, and it was decent, even though I didn't end up using too much from it.

Cat came through a while ago hoping for a duo session.

@BESW Hi! On briefly. I thought the rolling would've been 20 minutes ago but now I remember our Zulu times are 24h...
Apparently it's 1pm zulu time and there's 11 hours to go!

10 and a half hours by my watch.

1:23 PM
Yes well ;o
that, yes.

Will you be able to make it at that time?

Possibly! I'll be studying at the time but I may take a break to see. :)

Are you on the list?

I'm pretty sure I'm not
Yeah, I'm not
I still might like to see though :)

Aye.

1:37 PM
BESW 2 Question: Using aspects to represent non-"issue" game themes

BESW 2 Question: Replacing skills with approaches and vice versa

BESW 2 Answer: What/how many different cities are officially supported by Dresden Files?

BESW 2 Answer: Do you have to reveal your NPC's aspects?

Dakeyras 2 Question: What/how many different cities are officially supported by Dresden Files?

Dakeyras 2 Question: How can I let players make more choices during combat?
list ^

... oh wow. Does that mean BESW won?
Or are those like raffle ticket entries?

the second

As I understand it, it's more raffley.

I think I did eventually get a badge for a FATE question but it was several days into June xD
(I don't mind though, and genuinely so, not in a fox-and-the-grapes sort of way)

ticket counts:

1:41 PM
I got most of those right toward the end.

BESW          8
Erik Schmidt  5
Dakeyras      4
okeefe        4
Magician      4
wax eagle     4
MrJinPengyou  2
pconcepcion   2
SevenSidedDie 2
Standback     2
thomax        2
Thunderforge  2
Tynam         2
Dan Rasmussen 2
Extrakun      2
Lunin         2

This is good to see. In the first two weeks there were what, 5 points earned, total?

[idle curiosity] During the month of the contest, did any of the eligible tags expand to the point that they would not be eligible again?

Doubtful, the limit was set at something like 50 questions

1:56 PM
'cause appears to have over 100 now?
is over 100 too, just barely.

150 was the limit set

Ahah.

Q: The first annual RPG Games-fest! (Proposed Rules)

Brian Ballsun-StantonInspired by cleanupathon, taken from highest upvoted answers here. This post shall be for rules and discussion related to the first contest. This intro bit will be cleaned up after we start. The RPG Stack is about to celebrate its first birthday and we want to give you presents! (Image by Cyb...

So... no, none of them hit that.
Some of them got a good push though.

I would imagine if we do something along this line next year both Fate and Dresden will be DQ'd
good chance WOD makes it off the list too

2:00 PM
...Dairy Queened? Ewwwwww.

@waxeagle Hm? How did Erik get 5 points in your count?

@GraceNote announcer badge

@Problematic [waves]

@waxeagle Oh

2:01 PM
that gives total by person

@BESW mrgglglg...

That question is disqualified - question was closed.

@GraceNote ah...hmmm we've gotta mod the query then

@Problematic Murlocs! Or possibly underwater zombies! either way, RUN!

Let me pull up the list I have.
I haven't exactly translated UserID => Username though.

2:02 PM
@BESW underwater zombie murlocs?

@Problematic That's just silly.
I mean, how would you even tell?

@GraceNote is the badge table tied to the post table somehow?

@waxeagle In our query, we did a join betwixt users and badges and posts.

"Badge table's connected to the... post table! Post table's connected to the..."

So if we convert that to people names...
4 - [okeefe](http://rpg.stackexchange.com/users/307/okeefe)
2 - [Seven Sided Die](http://rpg.stackexchange.com/users/321/sevensideddie)
2 - [tynam](http://rpg.stackexchange.com/users/862/tynam)
4 - [waxeagle](http://rpg.stackexchange.com/users/1084/wax-eagle)
4 - [Magician](http://rpg.stackexchange.com/users/1421/magician)
2 - [pconcepcion](http://rpg.stackexchange.com/users/1557/pconcepcion)
4 - [Erik Schmidt](http://rpg.stackexchange.com/users/1871/erik-schmidt)
2 - [Extrakun](http://rpg.stackexchange.com/users/1981/extrakun)
@waxeagle The only differences I see are that I got 10 for BESW instead of your 8, and only 4 for Erik Schmidt due to the Announcer being closed.

2:22 PM
@GraceNote that's what I see as well

...I feel like I shouldn't complain.

I bet rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/25991 got missed in my query

rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/26031/… is the one I have that isn't in yours.

@GraceNote yep, date range is not inclusive :)

That's actually the only self answer in the bunch, and BESW was a vote shy of getting a badge on both the question and the answer, haha.

2:27 PM
That... would have felt wrong.

That's... wow, that's a total of exactly 50 points if my Math hasn't died.

@GraceNote your math lives

I totally need a refresher course on how to roll dice in here, by the way.

@GraceNote xdy where x <10 and y = {4,6,8,10,20}
and you can do multiple expressions as long as the total dice don't exceed 9

We're restricted to standard dice counts? Boo.

2:32 PM
2d8+3d10+1d20

1
7
5
9
2
11

I'll have to get creative to get precisely 50 choices then.

Would Anydice be of help?

@GraceNote us 2d10 as a d100 and assign everyone a range of values equal to twice their ticket count
that way there are 100 possibilities and there are equal odds

2d10

2:34 PM
5
8

That should work, yeah.
Let's setup the table, then...
01-08 | okeefe
09-12 | Seven Sided Die
13-16 | tynam
17-24 | wax eagle
25-32 | Magician
33-36 | pconcepcion
37-44 | ErikSchmidt
45-48 | Extrakun
49-52 | Lunin
53-56 | Dan Rasmussen
57-60 | Standback
61-64 | Thomax
65-68 | MrJinPengyou
69-88 | BESW
89-96 | Dakeyras
97-00 | Thunderforge

Sweet.

2:52 PM
2d10

3:42 PM
If anyone is interested in helping test, I have put together 'user is typing' indicators for SE chat

@Problematic if/when you want a larger audience, posting it on Stackapps would be appropriate :)

Oh, does it work in all the chats?

@BESW it does

I mean, for those for whom it works at all.

@waxeagle Eep. I'll keep it in mind.
Caveat emptor: it was written at like 2am last night. It's probably uuuugly.

3:45 PM
Okay, somebody type something. I'm trying it in FF this time.

test test test test can you see that I'm typing?

M'rr.
@Problematic Does it only work for people who also have the script installed?

I probably have to have it installed too don't i

@BESW Yes.

@Problematic Can you see when I'm typing?

3:47 PM
No :(
Which... it WAS working for you in FF last night, right?

...I broke it in FF. Great.
Yes.
Wait...

OOop. There it went.

Test, test, test, test the script without blocking it!
2

That worked marvelously.

Okay, so FF is still a success. I can see you're typing too.

3:48 PM
New idea: nuke Chrome from orbit and proceed from there.

Chrome is a mystical experience shared by everybody.
(Anyone who recognizes that reference, +2 nerd points.)

I need to make it less... spammy. Maybe I'll deploy it to nodejitsu. I think they actually support websockets.

Okay, I'm gonna give a few minutes to nuking Chrome.
Is the script you linked in here different than what I had an hour ago?

Nope.

Okay, I'm in Chrome with all extensions except the chat script turned off.
Console is giving that "Uncaught ReferenceError: io is not defined" thing again.

3:59 PM
[grump grump grump]

...I'd make a King Bidgood joke, but I don't think anyone would know what the hayfeathers I was talking about.
Is there anything else I could try right now?

Nothing that I can think of. Something is blocking remote scripts from being inserted, apparently.

Hmm.
I'm trying to think what might cause that in my line.
But I know just enough to be extra-stupid about it, so I have no real idea.

I suppose I COULD inline the socket.io script, but ew.

It's not a thing that firewalls would have any say in, is it?

4:08 PM
Not with it still working in FF

I have "phishing and malware protection" enabled as a built-in Chrome setting.
Test test test test?
This is only a test.

Don't think so.

Sigh. Alas.

Were you also having issues with the fate dice script?

No? Let me start it up again too.
No, it's happy and the console hasn't added any bugs.

4:19 PM
How are you installing the userscript?

Drag it from my desktop to the extensions tab.
I have whatevermonkey, but it scares me and I don't need it.

I wonder if there's extra stuff Chrome needs to do that, like identifying scripts that it will import.

It's how I installed the dice script.

I don't think dice script has external dependencies.

Ignorance: [is flaunted]

4:23 PM
... I can't even get it installed that way.
It says "drop to install" and then just shows me the source

You've gotta have it be .user.js, I think?

Ah.

I knew something!

Ah yep, that'd be it. Let me figure out how to add dependencies.
I see your io is not defined error

progress: [is made]

4:28 PM
Yup, looks like I'll either have to write a full-blown Chrome extension, or you'll have to use tampermonkey

Let me reinstall that.
Test, test.
I am writing things.

I see you.

Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.

Success.

Type a bit longer, let me see if I can see you.
Yes!

4:33 PM
Victory!
... although I may have figured out how to require external scripts. I'll test it on lunch.

Aight.

Well, that was fun.

Sorry.

No, that's Chrome's sandboxing to blame.

5:29 PM
Grace Note has added an event to this room's schedule.

6:07 PM
@BESW scary thing to be writing.

5 hours later…
10:49 PM
Award drawing today at 20:00 ET! Be there or be square. That's in 1 hour 10 minutes.

11:07 PM
@KRyan It worked, though!
Hail @BrianBallsun-Stanton!

And does phone like this?
Excellent

Fate System Toolkit preview is available for KS backers and their immediate groups.

I'm around in the middle of putting kids to bed, but I'll be in and out for next few minutes

11:25 PM
@SevenSidedDie hi!

@BESW Hallo! Dropped in for the drawing but miscalculated the time zone apparently.

Yeah, I had to go poke timeanddate.com to be sure I had my maths right.

@BESW err what did?

@KRyan I was writing the Ring inscription to test @Problematic's new typing indicator script.

ah

11:38 PM
I'd been having a terrible time getting it to work on Chrome, and we finally got it to play nice.

@BrianBallsun-Stanton my phone doesn't really like chat much
once upon a time I apparently told it to treat me as a desktop user
but that doesn't work very well

Being able to tell when the other guy is typing will make our play-by-chat Fate games much smoother.

aaah
yeah, I could see that

@KRyan So now the phone weighs twenty pounds, doesn't fit in your pocket, and requires external speakers/keyboard/mouse/monitor in order to interface with it?

@KRyan there should be a mobile link bottom right of your screen

11:42 PM
@BESW haha

This'll do for now.

part of the problem is that the mobile version is not exactly full-featured
I seem to recall that there was no way to edit/flag/report/reply

@BrianBallsun-Stanton <pig joke>

@KRyan yes, that's correct

Correct. But for being present, it's hard to beat.
BESW, I don't get it.

11:43 PM
Babe

@waxeagle well I swapped back to the mobile version anyway
good to know that link's there

yes, I've had that happen before :)

@BrianBallsun-Stanton Also, WOOOOOO desynchronization complete.

Also, using iPhone chrome, which isn't exactly the best, but seems to work.

11:50 PM
....Speaking of phones, I just got an email that I had been scheduled to teach a class today but hadn't been told because they were only calling my cell phone... they only thought to use email to tell me they'd had to cancel the class.

whoa, I just got pinged

I think it's that 10-minute warning

[face/palm] I repeatedly tell them that my cell phone is unreliable; my house phone and email are much better ways to get in touch with me.
@shatterspike1 We control the horizontal and the vertical!

@BESW sigh

It is almost time!

11:51 PM
Party in the room!

@BESW Have them take it off your contact info?

But do you control... the dwarves?

@shatterspike1 that would be me

@SevenSidedDie yeah, that's not gonna happen. It's in the secretary's personal address book, it's never leaving.
In honor of the anniversary, I submit for the chat's enjoyment a birthday song.

@BESW They're failing their Occupation (Secretary) check then.
@BESW Excellent choice!

11:54 PM
@SevenSidedDie To be fair, the secretary is also PR, tech support, client negotiation, janitorial services, and teaches half the classes.

(Wow, the Johns look like babies in that video.)

...and I gotta step out for a real quick moment

soooo
whats all this now?

@trogdor drawing for the context in t minus 4ish minutes
@GraceNote tis ok. we'll all still be here :)
bated breath...and all that

so an anviversary for SE ?

11:57 PM
Aye!

@Lunin Hi!

ah

huh, good timing on my part I guess. I just felt like finally wandering in :P

@waxeagle pedant

@waxeagle (*psst* common homonym. "bated" breath is it.)

11:58 PM
full up with pedants we are :)
@trogdor this particular one, yes

@Lunin welcome

All the pedanting.

so just RPG SE aniversary

@trogdor yeah, and not the anniversary of our birth, rather the annivesary of our graduation.

Yep. There was a contest that generated virtual "tickets" for a draw. The draw is about to happen.

11:59 PM
lol

@trogdor There was a month-long "get badges for Q&A in systems without many tags" contest, and this is the drawing for prizes.

mm
