does someone have some experience with OpenWatcom's debugger? I fail horribly at using it.
In particular, if I try to debug a program, load it and then click 'single step', it doesn't break until the debugged program returns.

@0xC0000022L do you understand my problem? or even better, does your crystal ball show you what I am doing wrong/wrongly?

@heinrich5991 my only guess right now would be that either you are running on a newer OS and lack privileges or that the compiled binary is optimized (although for all I know this shouldn't affect single-stepping)

Windows XP doesn't qualify as newer OS, I guess. The binary is the opposite of optimized as far as I can tell.
To clarify: I open the binary via File->Open, then I press Run->Trace Into and it just executes the program.
