Q: Get rotation of object

V360How would I get an object's rotation and set that as another's velocity? Like if I had Object A, that has the rotation data, and Object B, the object to be moved. How would I get that working in python?

ok back again
:D

Howdy!
How old are you?

thnx for the subscription btw
14 :P

Wow!
@CharlesL thanks for the videos.
You're pretty good for only being 14!

sure :)
thnx

12:20 AM
I'm 18.

i've been using blender for 4 years
cool

Nice
You're better than me, btw.

ah, thanks
i'm sure your awesome

I've been using it for about 5-6 years, but not all the time.
thanks. xD

heh

12:29 AM
How old are you, @iKlsR?

did you update the title :)

@TroySobotka hey
@DantheMan 92
been using Blender since 1.0
heheh

^...he lied
ok

@CharlesL Talking to me?

@DantheMan I am 19

12:30 AM
no, iklsr

Haha nice
@CharlesL oh ok

yeah :P

@iKlsR Nice! When did that come out?
I bet it was a different beast.

@iKlsR frantically googles trying to find blender version 1.0 release date
it wasn't open source until version 1.4

@DantheMan you have no idea
@CharlesL not accurate but you can try it, download.blender.org/release

12:33 AM
yeah, it only runs on irix
lol
those days

@iKlsR How old were when you started using it?

says a 14 year old
well
g'night
i'm signing off
o/

@CharlesL laters o/
@DantheMan 17

@CharlesL See ya, man
@iKlsR version 1.0???

@DantheMan ?
no I started with the mass at 2.49b

12:41 AM
Oh... so you were joking. Lol
11 mins ago, by iKlsR
been using Blender since 1.0

haha, yeah
I actually started when I was 16 but Blender was so damn hard I uninstalled it
The next time I tried it was a few months later, it was asking me for this damn python thing

I've gotten that before

*age 15 I mean
right when I started to learn to code

Nice!
I learned at 13 xD
*started to learn

ah
StackExchange is bitter at times..
I have this user in IRC who has some good info to comment on but he is short the rep

12:49 AM
Heh
Indeed
Comment on what?

You need 50 rep to make comments

Since when!?

Q: How to set Property in Blender Game Engine?

CharlesLHow would I set a properties value with python in the Blender Game Engine?

Q: Logging renders?

Dan the ManIs there a simple way to log/save every render that you make in a Blender scene? Maybe an add-on? This would be helpful to visually see progress on modeling, materials, lighting, and whatnot. It would also be helpful if it could "print on" the date/time, vertex count, and the camera settings. Am ...

Comment everywhere?

@DantheMan yep

12:54 AM
Ah

@DantheMan updated the answer

o7
@iKlsR Do you know what language cycles was written in?

1:14 AM
Everything is either C/C++ with bindings to Python

Cycles or Blender?

Cycles is a part of Blender is it not

Yeah
But it's considered a plugin
You can make pluins in Python or C/C++

A plugin to the renderer
Doesn't Luxrender and Yafaray also need plugins to get to the renderer?
If you need a definitive answer, its C/C++

Ok
thanks

Q: Why can't I have an outflow with an animated mesh output to local coordinates?

KirbinatorIf I check "export animated mesh" for an outflow in fluid dynamics, I lose the option of using local coordinates. Why? What can I do about it?

Got any advice on where I can learn Python?

@DantheMan there are tons of places

Give me your best one...

hmm

Ahahaha! Bucky!
That guy...
He's pretty good. But he goes so slow...

1:33 AM
My best resource would be..

Thanks

But the real experience comes from practice
Write a small program everyday

Alright. cool

5 years ago I was writing hello worlds, less than 3 months ago I sold a spreadsheet application to my college :)

Nice!
How much $?

1:37 AM
Yep, tailor made software pays alot
@DantheMan would rather not say :P

Mehehe
ok

It's a working thing, when you start working you will understand

Yeah... whatever xD
Do you study?

@DantheMan I am finishing up my CS degree

Swweeet

1:40 AM
@DantheMan why are you retagging everything as workflow o.O

2:02 AM
Not everything
Only what needs it
@iKlsR What have you learned so far?

@DantheMan in terms of?

@iKlsR Anything complicating

@DantheMan be more specific.

@iKlsR Ahhhhhh
Have you learned any low level stuff?

2:19 AM
@DantheMan Im usually in another browser, next time tag me in the last message
Yes, I know assembly and I have compiled and modified the linux kernel

Oh ok
Nice!

I also have several bootloaders and mini operating systems

Wow
Nice

@DantheMan practice makes perfect

Assembly is so complicating
@iKlsR Is it worth learning?

2:23 AM
@DantheMan the lower you get the better, I even wrote small bytecode interpreters and virtual machines, it gives you a better understanding of languages and programming in general

Wow
That's great

Everything in the computer is a switch,, a 0 or a 1, if you learn logics with CS you are going places
Raspberry Pi, Arduino, its very exciting

@iKlsR Yeah!
I bet

Can you imagine making a circuit from scratch, designing it, writing the code for it etc :)
Its fun
If you are serious about programming, there is no better time than the present to start, read ALOT, download opensource projects and go through the source
I wish I had someone to tell me stuff like this when I was learning. :)

@iKlsR
Making a circuit from scratch: yeah. Writing code: easy. Doing both: insanity.
@iKlsR Sweet. Thanks for the tip

2:27 AM
@DantheMan I have done both, I have a small device that can tell the amount of light in a space
I keep it on my window and use it to turn on lights when it gets dark

@iKlsR Nice! What does it measure candelas?

As a random stats fanatic It also plots to a graph

Hahahaha
Wow
I like graphs

@DantheMan I am not sure how the piece works, its like a small led

Ah ok

2:29 AM
ldr if i remember correctly

Nice
Do you learn electronics in CS?

@DantheMan just the basics of logics in the course that I am doing, I am mostly self taught

@iKlsR Do they really never wear out?
@iKlsR Cool. I was just learning some electronics stuff this morning

@DantheMan they give more than they receive that's why
solar stuffs

@iKlsR What?

2:34 AM
@DantheMan heh, nvm, random

I never new that Python can work with complex numbers!
@iKlsR Eh. ok

yep
e
@DantheMan they say if you do something for 3 weeks it becomes muscle memory
code for 2 - 3 hours everyday for 3 weeks

@iKlsR :) good idea
fun idea

@DantheMan you have no idea how good it is to put on a playlist and go fullscreen :)

@iKlsR I've done that before xD
@iKlsR in XCode

2:37 AM
ah, mac hipster

Yep

I rarely use a window manager
except for gui programming etc
ah, time for new meta post

@iKlsR clean this up?

the comments were going nowhere on that answer

@iKlsR nice
@iKlsR Oh. The link was different before
Got it

2:42 AM
ah

3:00 AM
@iKlsR that abafruit site is pretty cool.

ah, i popped up in google when i typed ldr

Ah ok
@iKlsR gotta go
Later

@iKlsR Man! How big are python integers??

@DantheMan can't quite remember

Q: Could someone re-explain gimbal lock to me?

InkBlendI have read the Wikipedia page on gimbal lock, and am still confused about the entire matter. My understanding is that, using a local coordinate system, if you rotate a model about its X axis then its Y and Z axes experience gimbal lock, and become "locked" together. However, my understanding i...

Q: Is it possible to make Blender a Y-up world?

user232After learning bits and pieces of Maya, 3DS Max, IMAGINE and XSI I noticed that they all have Y-up worlds with Z being used for depth (naturally). is there a way to make Blender a Y-up world? and does anyone know why isnt it Y-up in the first place?

Q: Is it possible to automatically simplify geometry in blender without losing object shape?

Tomek Szaroszyk3ds max has a sort of modifier that allows you to take a heavily subdivided mesh and take away some of the polygons that would anyhow create a single polygon (i.e they are facing the same way).

Q: What are the blender basics

blade19899I know of blender, and have played with it a couple of times in the past, but that was with the old layout! the new one i haven't played with. Question: What are the basics to know about blender(2.67)

I wonder who is going to sit down and type the basics of Blender..

the basics? basics of blender.SE or?

@Leathe He wants to know the basics of 2.67.. heh ;)

oh. now I see
I suppose we could just link him to the patch notes? :P

@Leathe can't encourage those sort of questions, let him narrow it down

9:07 AM
oh not as an answer, but like a private message or something

ah, I will drop a comment then

altho, since he's talking about "the old layout" I suppose he wants to know about the basics of the new layout?
but.. "the old layout" is pretty unclear

@Leathe I wonder who is going to type that

no one :P
they're just going to downvote the question

Q: Has anyone started a project similar to Grasshopper (Rhino) for blender?

zeffiiFor a while now I've been interested in prototyping parametric ways to generate geometry. The nodeview of Grasshopper reminds me a lot of the nodeviews we have in blender. Q: Logo of blender SE

miceterminatorI notice that every major SE site has its own logo. I don't know who has the power to set a logo, but I think it would also be a nice promotion to do a blender SE logo contest in the blender artist forum or something like that.

@CharlesL everyone

oh
yeah
it's kind of an FAQ site
and most of the people are blender users
so they don't really care

@CharlesL If we don't set the rules, who will?

it's supposed to be required i think
it's not even that hard to read

heh
hmm, nearly 250 users, we are gonna blow up soon.

i hope so
we're still below par on traffic

That thing @DantheMan has planned sounds good, I think we should invite various artists each week or so!

4:59 PM
yeah
i agree
i'm not sure how often we could do it though

We have these events organized over on Anime.SE

yeah, but there are more anime artists than blender artists

@CharlesL We could go every 2 weeks, we already have over a dozen popular people here

that's true
which ones?
Johnathan williamson
mike pan

@CharlesL haha, no we don't interview artists, we just disuss stuff in an organized way
hmm
Campbell Barton
