5:00 PM
he missed a stag night yesterday, which is shameful =)

kce
Anyone else sitting in VMWare's Live Support queue this morning? I've been on hold for an hour and half. Is this typical?

Thank you for calling support. Your call is important to us. Please hold

Please hold. Your call will be answered as soon as we raise a support agent from the dead.

@kce only ever had to call it out of hours (we have a dedicated support team 9x5), and it's always been pretty straightforward

Morning!

5:03 PM
Evening!

@kce they still fighting that AD authentication problem?
@DennisKaarsemaker Shocking. Truly shocking.
@MichaelHampton Looks like 3.9 still doesn't have alx. I get really tired of the kernel maintainer pissing matches. I know that they're sometimes for really good reasons, but it's usually fucking irritating.

@Chopper3 You have a bat phone into every major tech player in the world.
Don't lie

kce
@Ad
@ad

@kce @da

kce
@Adrian - Yeah. That's probably why they're slow to respond today.

5:07 PM
urgh im getting antsy

@Adrian Oh, I'm sure there are comparable pissing matches with other operating systems, they just aren't visible to the world.

a teacher gave me a D in one of my classes, i emailed him saying wtf thats impossible, he claimed to have updated it to a C, but the system still says D like 12+ hours later

kce
@MikeyB - Come on now, don't make fun of me. I've been here since 6:45 with one cup of coffee.

dont wanna bug him just yet, but i need to send final transcripts pretty soon

@MichaelHampton Oh yes. And the pissing matches at MS are bloody EPIC. Long nasty ranting Reply-All shouting matches with audiences of thousands of engineers and PMs.

5:09 PM
@kce I spent the morning taking pictures of and then wrangling 10 3-year olds.

@David Bug him. And if that doesn't work, bug his chair.
This time of year, professors disappear very very quickly

@MDMarra i'll give him till like tuesday

All schools also have a grade challenge process

dont wanna push it, as im not actually sure if I REALLY got a D or a C

@MDMarra just HP/3Par, Cisco, VMWare, MS, Violin, Safenet, Oracle and some smaller custom code houses - that's all

5:10 PM
You left Intel off
@David There's a set time limit on how long you can officially challenge a grade. It's usually only one or two weeks.

@MDMarra i think they can do whatever they want currently

Better to appeal and drop it when he bumps it than not appeal at all, he disappears, you're fucked.

as not all my grades are even posted yet

right, but I'm saying that there's an official process to challenge your grades, and the clock starts ticking from the moment yours is posted in most schools

my last final was just on wednesday

5:11 PM
he can update it whenever he wants, but you can't challenge it whenever you wants

so i think its open season

I think you're missing my point, but that's ok. carry on

cant hurt to give him a couple of days

it can if those couple of days allows your challenge window to expire...

could bug him too much and have him change his mind
i dont think so, ive had a teacher tell me they could change grades like 2 semesters later

5:13 PM
Right
They can do whatever they want
but you cannot challenge a previous grade whenever you want.
I'm saying, don't trust your professor

i dont follow... the grade is being "challenged" through the professor
therefore he can change it whenever he wants anyways?

no it's not. you're asking him to update the grade
universities/colleges have a process where a student can officially challenge a grade through the dean's office and it's reviewed by a panel
that process usually has a very short window where it can be initiated

^-- yep

ah, i'm not too worried lol
he's a good dude, not gonna fuck me over

5:14 PM
so, yes, the professor can change it if he wants whenever he feels like it. you, however, have no recourse if this window expires and he says "whoops lol, not changing it. suck it"

Get with your student advisor if you have one and see what they believe. There is a due process. Also, if you bug the professor and he just flat out gets pissed and won't change it then you have the window of opportunity to challenge it

i'll fight him irl if he fucks it up =P

Have a good weekend folks.
I'm out

see ya

later @Travis

5:15 PM
I need to shower

/me is @ work
:(

Time to say Screw It and go buy another NIC that works. Spending two days of dinking around trying various RPMs and trying to compile officially-designated "crap" code in various kernels is just stupid.

@Adrian english?
revs per minute?

@David redhat package manager?

rubbish package mangler

5:18 PM
@Adrian ooh
@DennisKaarsemaker huehuehue

(not a fan of rpm)

@DennisKaarsemaker that too

Ugh I hope they let us out early
@MDMarra applied to job that uses SCCM and SCOM

I got really fond of Debian/Ubuntu's package management the past few years.

@DennisKaarsemaker What do you prefer, emerge?

5:22 PM
@JoelESalas hell no
I'm a .deb man

@DennisKaarsemaker Are you rockin the debian on your bare metal farm?

@JoelESalas The young'uns at the last job also waxed poetic about how great Gentoo is. Which is where I politely pointed out that they'd never supported an installation larger than their bedroom.

@Adrian Glorious

@JoelESalas unfortunately no. That's all centos.

@DennisKaarsemaker You'd rather it was debian? why

5:24 PM
ya'll have Monday off?
=D

@JoelESalas no, changing is a pain
If I'd were to start from scratch, I'd use Ubuntu

@David yes

@DennisKaarsemaker Loved me some Ubuntu over the years. Cursed at it almost as much.

@DennisKaarsemaker I'm quite interested in the rationale

@Adrian I know of large gentoo installations. It works.

5:26 PM
@Cole woo woow party!!!?

@DennisKaarsemaker I'm sure it does, as does with ubuntu. Gotta have the mindset and talent to make it work though.

@David nope :(

@David Going to Newport Beach, hive of scum and villainy, etc

@JoelESalas less ridiculously dated than rhel when released, .deb/apt packaging and actually supported by more than 3 people.

@JoelESalas wha?

5:27 PM
(of course rhel is supported, centos is not)

@DennisKaarsemaker It's like you live in a different world, but I guess you run a bigger shop

@Cole me neither lol

@DennisKaarsemaker Didn't the head CentOS guy just up & disappear for like 8-10 months some years back?

@Adrian no, in a stroke of stupidity they ripped out their build system to slowly replace with something new (instead of building new first and then ripping out old). RHEL 6 got released pretty much right after they ripped out the old, so centos 6 was severely delayed

5:29 PM
@JoelESalas WS?

@MDMarra we get our intel support via HP

@David I think the lady and I are going to George's Island though
Georges Island is one of the islands in the Boston Harbor, situated just over from downtown Boston. The island has a permanent size of , plus an intertidal zone of a further , and rises to a height of above sea level. Historic Fort Warren is on the island. Because of this, and since a ferry operates from Boston to the island, it is a popular destination and one of the easiest islands to access in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. History At the time of Euro-American colonization, Georges Island was composed of two drumlins, rising out of the bay like other nearby i...

@David wat

@JoelESalas is this link work-safe? (hella people can see my monitor)

@David bikini girls?

5:30 PM
@JoelESalas therefore, no?

@Chopper3 And now you know a direct line into Intel as well :)

@David I work at a fashion company, we regularly have naked ladies in the basement. It's sfw for me

@MikeyB huh? you know I do PR work for them right?

@DennisKaarsemaker That was years after, but that one was nasty enough. This was back in 2008-2009 when Lance Davis when MIA yet was the sole contact for the centos.org domain and PayPal account.

@Chopper3 Oh no I didn't. I was referring to:

5:31 PM
@Adrian oh that, yeah I remember now.

@MikeyB :)

@Chopper3 That's a KIND of PR work...

Doesn't look like I can use FSRM to email the user saving the file to the share

@Chopper3 Except that now their new support site, ever since they deployed it, is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY BROKEN.
And we're about to start selling a lot of the WP servers I think

@MikeyB never had a non-DOA issue with any Intel product in my life, had plenty of DOA kit though

5:33 PM
@Chopper3 Of those 20 active issues, most of them were software.

@MikeyB actually I'm about to do my first ever overclocking in a couple of weeks, on a new personal machine of course, not work's

@Chopper3 ooh, exciting!

Oh wait no: Send e-mail to the user who exceeded the threshold check box.

@David Yeah, never built my own PC before somehow, thousands of servers but never a regular gaming machine, my current one is just a regular Alienware one but I got offered a load of bits so I thought I'd give it a go and get an upgrade

@Chopper3 what specs?

5:35 PM
@David all of them?

@Chopper3 why not

@David ok, one sec

@Chopper3 Meh, I have an i7-3770k that is QUITE ENOUGH horsepower, thankyouverymuch. I don't need to be a tweaker ;) (and a sexy new proper desktop with a i5-35xx. It's amazing how much horsepower you can get nowadays for not much.

@MikeyB srsly?
K-series processors are pretty much BUILT to be overclocked

@David Corsair 350D chassis, Corsair AX860i PSU, Asus Maximus VI Gene mobo, Intel 4770K, Nvidia GTX 780, OCZ 500GB SSD (can't remember exact model), Corsair H100i radiator, some of their fans too, not decided on memory yet

5:38 PM
dang
didnt even know there was a 4770

doo-doo-doo buying new servers because the old one died....

@David 3rd June

you can prob get at least 1Ghz out of that
my 2500K (stock 3.2Ghz) runs at 4.5Ghz with a Corsair H80 on it

@David Well yeah, that's what the K means. I got it for freeish.
Don't want to burn it out, not worth it to me.

@MikeyB i dont think you can "burn it out"

5:45 PM
hey all

@MattBear sup dude
I put my headphones on
I couldn't deal with the whistler

This one will also be closed, then. If your question is closed, you are meant to improve it to have it reopened; posting the same question again is a serious faux pas here. — Michael Hampton 32 secs ago
Where do these people come from?

@MichaelHampton Mostly StackOverflow

working on backing up my webservers

ever have one of those days where you can't remember the password to your OTP generator?

5:48 PM
I'm two upvotes away from hitting 10,000 rep

I'm having one now :P

do I just need /etc/apache2 and /var/www ?

@MattBear you need a lot more than that

@MattBear Fucking, how are we supposed to know?

BOOM
@RyanRies

5:49 PM
Hahaha, awesome, thanks :)
pops champagne cork

They were actually good answers
So, I wouldn't have upvoted them if they sucked :)

@MattBear you need the website (usually /var/www but sometimes not), the config files (which will tell you where the website lives and what other paths to back up), and unless you're certain you can get them back you need the modules, binaries, and required libraries for {Apache, PHP, Passeger, mod_perl, etc...}

I can still hear him whistling. Going to blow my face off

That doesn't make sense, Michael. The mods said my first one was not a question. I am 100% confident that this one is a question. Therefore, how can they logically be the "same question"? — Jason 41 secs ago
Will someone please kill this guy, before I do?

@Cole blow HIS face off

5:54 PM
@voretaq7 k, thanks

@David I'm about to be like...SHUT THE FUCK UP

@Cole do it

@MichaelHampton to be fair, his first question wasn't that bad. But his second...

Are you guys ready for LDAP

@faker Yeah, I don't know why his original question was closed to begin with.

5:56 PM
@David I don't want to get fired. He's worked here for 30 years

@MichaelHampton I agree

@faker Haha, you have the rep, put a reopen vote on it :)

@JoelESalas is LDAP ready for us?

@DennisKaarsemaker Not yet, I need to build the server

Wow... all this new moderating responsibility...

5:58 PM
@ewwhite Can I replicate a file system to another server using ZFS

@Cole so he's managed to not get fired for 30 years, big deal, kick him in the whistler

I dont know how other people deal with it
does SNMP on ESXi monitor local disk?
I know you can have vCenter send alerts.

@RyanRies congrats on 10k

@Cole It can, but you need the MIBs

I'm in a noisy office too, this is how I deal with it:
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Pro-Headphones/dp/B000065BPB

6:00 PM
@JoelESalas thought so
Coworker was like "We can't monitor local disk on ESXi"
Um...yes we can
also vCenter has alerts...ugh

@Cole You mean "We can't monitor" :>
I have nagios monitoring our actual ESXi host

That's going to piss my whole group off
I responded to the whole group that we could

@Iain danke

I did have the MIBs but snmpwalk was complaining it couldn't parse any of them.
So I got rid of them and just used the OIDs instead. Works like a charm still.

Only took me a year and half ><

6:04 PM
@NathanC we had a remote site's internal drive die in ESXi. We didn't know till the manager over there emailed us

Ouch.

So yeah

Yeah, I'm monitoring our server for that. I also set up a custom script to monitor the SMART in our new mail server's raid array
Working on adding the actual array checks (it's a compaq smart array) to it as well

anyone in / know anyone in Monterey, CA?

@David Well you can overclock it wrong, overheat it, yada yada. I have more fulfilling tasks to do :)

6:08 PM
@MikeyB not really
built-in protections wont let you screw it up

@David Maybe nowadays, yeah.

too hot? i'll turn myself off
voltage too high? same
etc etc

So apparently me saying it's possible = me setting it up

@Cole took you this long to figure that out?
if its possible according to you, then you shall do it!
gotta keep your mouth shut lol

Dude, I don't say anything
Nothing will ever get done, ever.

6:11 PM
@David Yes, any idea is automatically volunteering

6:22 PM
So is anyone else using Apache 2.4?
I just upgraded my personal box yesterday - it's kinda not too sucky...

@voretaq7 Is it BLAZIN FAST

@Cole nice

@JoelESalas no noticeable speed change
but I'm not exactly loading it heavily.

@voretaq7 So what's the advantage over 2.2?

@JoelESalas better SSL configuration options (especially if you're using OpenSSL 1.0)

6:26 PM
So I'm doing a test restore to the new mail server using an older backup ...it's supposed to give a "progress". Well, it's at 99% and started at 99%. So much for a progress bar...

@JoelESalas they changed the http server-status handler too
@NathanC The first 99% of the restore takes 99% of the time. The last 1% takes the other 99% of the time.

@voretaq7 I expected that logic from Windows. :P

Q: citrix Xenserver 6.1 cannot boot normal

milkbottleI install XenServer6.1 on SUPERMICRO 6017R-NTF,but when i reboot it cannot boot normally I have to use the installation CD to set #sgdisk -A 1:set:2 /dev/sda to get it to boot successful,but when i reboot again it boot fail.

The pain...

@NathanC BANG.

Yay! :p
8570 root 15 0 512m 336m 25m S 5.8 11.1 290:32.02 mailserver
2152 root 10 -5 0 0 0 R 2.6 0.0 235:24.60 kjournald
...ouch.

6:51 PM
Made the mistake of layin down with laptop on lap. Now cat stands on chest.

@Adrian Also, now sterile

@David As old as I am, that's not exactly a worry. Getting cancer, perhaps slightly more so. But in all likelihood, what's going to take me home to Jesus is going to be the front end of a SUV making an illegal U-turn in the street.

@RyanRies does that VBS escalate without prompting?

@MDMarra No

btw, way to blow my "no you can't" to the open file over SMB question out of the water :)

6:59 PM
@MDMarra If he wants to not get prompted by UAC, then he needs to turn off UAC.

I was like "damn, this guy's quoting from books and shit!"
@RyanRies yeah it sounds like it's for an automated process that needs to launch handles.exe
cant you do some black magic with manifests?

Hrmmmmmm you can put in an app manifest that it requires elevation, but UAC still prompts you
But I am still open to being proven wrong

Oh, I have no clue
If someone's going to prove you wrong, it's not me
the inner workings of UAC are not something I've ever dived into

I think it would have to be a hack. The whole purpose of UAC is to prompt you, and if that could just be bypassed without having to disable UAC, then what is the bleeping point of UAC, ya know?

right
I thought that you could deliver a manifest that would still prompt once during install but then never again once accepted, but I most likely just made that up

7:05 PM
Heheheh add a scheduled task with schtasks.exe that runs your script as System :)

You should see the script I have running as SYSTEM on a DC at one of @ewwhite's clients
every 10 minutes

It depends on how child processes "inherit" the permissions
Sometimes when a program is launched after an install it runs with administrative rights, but I think it depends on the method of install (MSI, standalone exe, etc)

Stupid linksys router falls over faster than a drunken sailor with a peg leg.

7:35 PM
Somebody mentioned recently (I can't remember if it was meta or chat) a question that was not constructive for SF, but would've made a good question for sec.se. Can't seem to find it now. Anyone remember?
Nevermind, found it and it turned out I had misread it

Errr so irritated
Get home, my whole apartment reeks of weed.
Like smells like someone hot boxed it
I'm thinking I'm going to have to put a note on my neighbors door
Or something

does that ever make your clothes smell?

@Tanner today, probably
It's that strong
I don't know what I can do

Yeah, a note isn't going to do anything. Too passive. How the hell does it reach your apartment anyway? Are there holes in the floor or something? :P

Only a two story house
I'm upstairs, they're downstairs

7:45 PM
oh... sucky...

Must be coming up the heat vent
because I can hear them talking sometimes
Also, the house is super old so the windows have no insulation really.
They also have a 2 year old child
I shouldn't have to buy them shit

No, but do you want the smell gone?

They smoke outside too, right outside my bedroom window.
He's dealing, as well'

Okay so you just need to move :P

Nothing like virus hunting 30 minutes before my weekend
wheee

7:48 PM
Yeah if I could afford to move
This apartment is $725 - any other 1br apartment in my town are $1000+
It's just so frustrating
What bothers me is they have a 2 year old

@Cole Sounds like a police matter

Police won't do shit around here.

@Cole Sounds like a DEA matter.

Sigh, I'm going to ask my landlord if he has any other apartments available

@Cole The same landlord that lets his tenants deal out of his property?

7:53 PM
@Tanner he probably doesn't know
Before these douches, it was an older woman
quiet, clean, no issues

@Cole In that case it sounds like a "Not for nothing but your new tenants are drug-dealing scumbags" matter

Going to let him know

unless your landlord is also a drug-dealing scumbag (or their primary customer)

@Cole could probably report them to your landlord so they'll get the authorities involved

@NathanC Yeah, I'm going to let him know

7:56 PM
While I have nothing against that in general, it's definitely inconsiderate heh

I just don't like my shit smelling like weed
It gives me a headache

@Cole I don't like the smell of any kind of smoke

@voretaq7 agreed

when I moved to my place I made all sorts of noise until the vent stacks were repaired to proper working order because I could smell the people upstairs smoking

gross
