2:00 PM
@fbueckert He's right. They took me about five minutes to get used to, and they've been my favorite shoes since. I actually have that exact pair that Woot is selling.

@Fluttershy Do they work like sneakers?

@Fluttershy Ah, that explains what you were saying about them being snug. I have KSOs which have thinner walls.

@fbueckert What do you mean?

@Fluttershy Do they have rubber soles that grip like sneakers?

@OrigamiRobot Ah, gotcha. I don't mind them fitting a bit snug, though.

2:02 PM
I ask because dancing with sneakers is pretty hard.

@fbueckert They have different styles with varying levels of grip.

@fbueckert Very, very thin soles that grip pretty well. But it's still nice because everything just feels more natural in them.

The ones on Woot have closer to a standard sneaker sole.

To be fair, dancing with bare feet is usually also a painful experiment.
You need at least socks to be able to spin properly.

My KSOs are much smoother on the bottom:

2:04 PM
Beer time, cu all

@fbueckert I don't know that they'd be good for dancing, but they are still awesome.
And super cheap on Woot today.

My mother has discovered text messaging. This horrifies me, because she uses all the same shortcuts that stupid kids do. "r u home? ill b there soon"

@Sterno My parents do too.

@OrigamiRobot Mine text in full sentences, thankfully.
I tore a strip off of my whole family when they found instant messaging, and told them they had to spell whole words if they wanted to talk to me.

Tore a strip off?

2:13 PM
@OrigamiRobot $30 is cheap for these things?

Never heard that before

I do not understand what sort order is being applied here

@OrigamiRobot Yelled that all of them.

@fbueckert Mine were $85.
@fbueckert I used context clues to figure it out, I was just remarking on it.

@OrigamiRobot I use many unconventional sayings.
It comes with the rather large vocabulary.

2:14 PM
I thought it might be a regional thing.

Morning, Bridge

@OrigamiRobot Most likely not; I use many different sayings for regular actions.

Please quantify the size of your vocabulary so that we can be properly astounded by its magnitude.

@Sterno Gigantic. Immense. Stupendously vast.

@fbueckert Also, the shoes are machine washable.

2:19 PM
@SaintWacko Hullo.

@OrigamiRobot That's a great advantage.

@OrigamiRobot Do they come in Bigfoot size so that you can terrorize your neighbors by leaving tracks in their yard?

These platforms are spinning me round and round and round and round
And now I feel giddy

@Sterno Probably

@fbueckert Having a huge vocabulary is fun :)
Also, buy FiveFingers

2:21 PM
@SaintWacko Indeed.

@SaintWacko They are $30 on Woot today.
Hell, I might order an extra pair myself at that price.

A: What are the differences between Carmageddon and the free promotional version?

CeltaUnfortunately, Google doesn't allow free apps to turn into paid apps in the Play Store, so after the 24 hours were up, the promo version got pulled from the store and therefore won’t receive any updates. You can still opt for the paid version or use the demo version afterwards if you want to see ...

@Celta Yes, what about your answer?

Q: Unallocated Skill Points in Character Sheet in EVE?

kalinaI have just logged into EVE Online for the first time after the latest patch and now on the character sheet of all of my characters I see the following; I'm not seeing anything in the patch notes that would explain where these appeared from. Obviously to apply them I can just follow the instru...

Q: How to automatically connect to Cerberus Network

One-OneMy ME2 game is not tied to Origin even though I purchased the retail version. I got a Cerberus Network pass through which I connect to the Cerberus Network. Upon starting my game the game attempts to connect to the Cerberus Network: It always leads to failure: Then I click OK, takes me back ...

@Celta That explains that, thank you.

2:38 PM
lo
is this the right place to ask for advise on what i shuold do about an answer i posted

@SaintWacko What model do you have?
@Callum Yep!

@GrumpyLazers dupe

ok i posted an answer on this queston gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/118126/… and then the question got changed so my answer is not for the question being asked
someone else has answerd it so should i just remove mine

@Callum Technically, those points were part of the question, you didn't actually answer any of the questions being asked in the original question.

@Callum That's probably best. The body of the question had already changed when you answered it, I just changed the title to match.

2:41 PM
You answered, "What's the difference between the difficulty levels", which isn't what was being asked.

ok thanks

No problem

@OrigamiRobot KSO

Me too!

So now I have to plan a mission to Mun to rescue my stranded Kerbals. Shouldn't be too hard; my base rocket can get there easily.

3:04 PM
@fbueckert Is this something that happened dynamically because you accidentally stranded them there?
Or is it some kind of scripted mission?

@StrixVaria Yes.

That sounds really interesting, then.

My rocket had a bit too much horizontal movement on landing, and tipped over.
When attempting to take off, it fell apart and blew up, except for the cockpit.

It's too bad that game is so expensive.

@StrixVaria It's only going to get moreso.
I'm hoping the Damned Robotics mod gets updated for .20 soon; I want to lower a rover onto Mun, and reattach it later.
I suppose that needs the Kerbal Attachment System mod, too, then.

3:07 PM
@StrixVaria And insanely complicated.

The Mun landing was a spontaneous mission of mine; after pushing a space station into orbit, I realized I had easily enough fuel to get there.
In fact, I had enough extra to almost land on Mun, not including my last stage.
So my next mission will be a dual-stage mission; deliver some extra fuel tanks to the station, and then go rescue my Kerbals.
And maybe design a rover to go grab those kerbals.
Because the latest update includes external seats.

3:26 PM
I am truly terrible at RTSes
Gnome told me that Reprisal is such a game being given away for free today in a Greenlight push
I've failed the third mission (the first "real" one) for the third time now.

Reprise isn't really a RTS. Well, sort of.

Regardless. I am terrible at it.

I can't find it...
this makes me sad
I kinda like RTSes, even if I'm awful at them

I've never really understood how that game worked. I made it a few levels in, then just gave up because the connection between cause and effect seemed rather tenuous and nothing I did made much sense
It does look very pretty though

@Sconibulus I wrote in the wrong name

3:34 PM
ahh, cool
I'm at work now, so can't do the download, but sounds neat

thanks @badp

@PrivatePansy Reprisal is a wonderful modern recreation of Populous.
/late-to-the-party
Which unfortunately inherits some of the problems Populous has.

@RedRiderX Can you dig holes to drown people? That's the true benchmark of whether or not it faithfully recreates Populous.

@Sterno I believe you can

3:38 PM
@BenBrocka That, right there, shows just how nuts Microsoft is.

They're crazier than 2006 Sony

@Sterno Yes, but not the enemy.
The music for Reprisal is great too.

So Doctor Who season 7b is done, and the next Gravity Falls episode is not coming out until... god knows when. Mmmph I need something to watch

@PrivatePansy Spaced

@PrivatePansy Hercules, the Legendary Journeys is on Netflix. Dig in!

3:43 PM
@PrivatePansy Just start again from the beginning.

@PrivatePansy The 4400 isn't too bad.
Or Warehouse 13 or Eureka.

pops in an unearthly child.

@BenBrocka So they've sold 75M XBox 360s in seven years and want to sell 25M more next year alone?
and they want 12½M of those to be from new customers?
@BenBrocka Maybe if they actually gave them away for free...

Nevermind, certain things should never be uttered in here.

@badp well a 360 price drop will probably be announced before the xbone

3:46 PM
@Sterno *raises eyebrows*

33% more sales in one year is still pretty insane, especially since their alleged "new market" will be entirely disinterested in actual game consoles

@BenBrocka If they sell 1 billion XBox Ones, I'll delete my account.
9

@OrigamiRobot And I will join you.
Because the world will have officially gone mad.

That would mean 1 billion insane people exist.

@OrigamiRobot Be fair. Some will be clueless rather than insane.

3:48 PM
@Sterno Their cluelessness will drive them insane.

Some of them will be @kalina, who'll buy a thousand or so just to make you delete your accounts.

@kalina secretly loves us.

I wonder how many publishers are looking at MS's "1 billion evil pinky" story and thinking "yeah I think I can trust these guys"
Because either they're telling a totally different story to publishers or they're giving them complete bullshit too

If anyone's interested in Defiance, there's a F2P weekend going on through Steam.

I see XBone and I can only really parse it as CrossBone. PIRATE MACHINE.

3:59 PM
I got the tumbleweed badge...

@OrigamiRobot We've got the meter ready!!

@badp nice
Plot twist: The Xbox One sells for $1 with a $500 annual fee and people are extremely bad at estimating long term costs

You got that right, except for the part where it's apparently $300 instead of $1
...and whatever the Live price is

Did they actually announce pricing?

Didn't they? Sorta kinda?
$300 with sub, $500 without? or is it just speculation I picked up somewhere?

4:09 PM
$300 would be pretty insane giving kinect is included, and the current, shittier kinect is $100 alone
The only thing I heard is Gamestop estimating the next consoles would be cheaper at launch than the current gen's launch prices

How much was that?

I'd be kinda surprised ot see that for Xbox but I think Sony's probably going to do whatever they can to get out a sub$500 version because of the freak-out last gen
I think PS3 was $500 Xbox was $350 or $400 maybe?
but the 360 didn't come with a required kinect

and that's before your first $60 game

Depends how heavily they're willing to subsidize I guess
Wonder how much of the PS3's cost was because of blu ray (which is now much cheaper) + the ridiculous proprietary Cell processor

Console gaming is expensive
oh, but they do more than just gaming! They do television! spohrts, spohrts, spohrts, spohrts, call of duty, television, dogs.

4:14 PM
@badp I buy a gaming console for gaming.

@fbueckert I buy a computer for gaming, and everything else.
Well. I'd like to buy a computer for gaming. That's a different story.

Because I said they'd do that during the reveal (it was half a joke)

> "Additionally, by tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities," according to the application.
I'M REALLY LOVIN' IT - Watch 10 McDonald ads. 2,000 GAMERSCORE.

Next up: TV watching trading badges

4:16 PM
"I swear I only watch My Little Pony for the achievements"

"I missed last weeks Desperate Prostitutes, could I trade you for a Ice Cream Truckers badge?"

If they measure a sale as sending an XBone to a customer, they could have 1 billion "sales" with 90% of them being warranty replacements

that seems plausible, given their history

Yup, that's completely going to kill the used games market for the console.

4:21 PM
@fbueckert No way it's a flat fee, IMO. They'd have to do something to accommodate old games that sell, at retail, for like $20

@BenBrocka You expect Microsoft to lower prices?
Or to do something sane?

I guess it depends whether their intent is to kill used game sales or to extract money. They're slightly different goals, but only the first will go well if they overcharge so hilariously

@BenBrocka I'm wondering about the forced activation going on.
If it's completely online, it won't take long for hackers to set up an "authentication" server that does nothing but return positive responses.
And will be incredibly easy to defeat.

@fbueckert Depends how they do it, it might at least require a key to be able to send positive responses

@BenBrocka Perhaps. An only online authentication scheme is much easier to circumvent than anything hardware baked.

4:25 PM
If this shit's as bad as it looks, they're handing over the actual gaming market over to Nintendo and Sony

@BenBrocka At this point, that's exactly what gamers are thinking.

God knows if the non-gaming demo will care, I assume most will be like "Xbox? No I don't really play games" and never give it a second thought
Or, at best "no I already have a Roku why do I need this crap?"
I mean it basically sounds like the 360's media functions + connects to your cable box + a remote control. A $500 remote control that doesn't replace any of your set top boxes is a rough sell

@BenBrocka That's what I'm thinking.
If it at least replaced several of the boxes there, I could see it being worthwhile.

At the moment almost literally the only positive thing I'm seeing about Xbone is "well I bought the last 2 xboxes" and "AT LEAST THEY SHOWED THE BOX LOLOL GG SONY"
(is the fucking box seriously so important to some people?)
It's not like you can even buy it yet

@BenBrocka The smart thing for Sony to do with the PS4 is to go, "No restrictions at all on used games. Trade to your heart's content!"

4:29 PM
@fbueckert I think they already said used games will work
Sony's E3 should just be "Used games work, you don't need an internet connection, here's an hour of REAL GAME FOOTAGE, we out"

@BenBrocka I read somewhere they hadn't completely decided on it.
@BenBrocka Yup.
They do that, and I won't even care it's not hardware backwards compatible.

The thing is the PS4 is working on BC; the cloud service might not be as good as hardware compatibility (heck might be better, depends what they do), but MS has completely cast it aside

@BenBrocka They probably don't even care.

I think MS has already said their E3 event "won't just be about games"
Wonder how much more ammo they plan to give to Sony

We're going back to the days where consoles weren't the same thing, and you chose the one that fit you better.
I have to hand it to Ubisoft; they're doing a pretty good job of promoting The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot.

4:33 PM
Well, in terms of current-gen, retail games, PS4 and Xbox1 will probably be pretty equivalent
But Xbone's focus is so crazy different I suspect there will be a very different demographic, if it takes off at all
MS hasn't had the biggest successes with their "REINVENTING THE X" lately (windows phone, surface, Win 8)

@BenBrocka And their focus seems to be more on advertising revenue, as they completely screwed over their gamerbase for the 360.

They're just banking on all the people that don't realize PCs can have HDMI out.

@fbueckert Ads on the dashboard seems pretty screwed. Not sure how bad it is though

Or Kinect.

@OrigamiRobot Take out an ad to put next to any Xbone ad: Psst. PC's can output to TVs easier, and cheaper.

4:36 PM
Sony just has "ads" when you hover over the "what's new" section in the XMB, and they're ads for actual PSN content

@BenBrocka My understanding is that ads have pride of place on the dashboard, and there's no way to remove them.
And the vast majority aren't even gaming related.

@fbueckert the sad thing is that for a lot of people it doesn't matter how easily your PC can do it, you say "do X on your PC" and they zone out, too hard, too high tech. You give them a box, a $200 box, to do the same thing and nothing else and they'll flip their shit over it

Psst, all the non-gaming things these console are doing can already be done by a low cost PC. Also, the gaming things too.

@BenBrocka Because people are sheep.
It would be so easy to take advantage of that, if I didn't have ethics or a conscience.

It doesn't matter if it's actually simpler, it just has to have a clearer value proposition, and anything PC based is complicated and scary because we massively fail to educate people on basic tech shit

4:38 PM
@BenBrocka Most of it is people's unwillingness to learn.
I can't remember the number of times I've explained what's happening, and why, and have the person just zone out on me.

Q: How Do I Draw Two Overlapping JPanels such that the Graphics Drawn On Both Of Them Display On The Screen?

user2316667I'm creating the game breakout. I am a novice programmer and I have no knowledge of gaming theory. So I decided the smartest way to avoid a lot of rendering and buffering is to have four JPanels. A static JPanel at the very back with an image drawn on it (fun background image). A JPanel with the ...

They don't want to know why, they just want it resolved.

I've gotten pretty good at explaining tech stuff to people but yeah, most don't care, and it's impossible to teach everyone about this stuff just by word of mouth
you have to be willing to look for yourself at some point

still on-topic

A: "Here is a thing. Look at the thing. Do you see the thing? I would like to know what this Thing is Called." A plea for sanity

user3389In general, I'm in agreement that a question which: Asks about a game thing Points to the thing in a concrete manner Asks what that thing is is not off-topic simpliciter, but I want to point out that they do not automatically make a question on-topic either. You've linked to four questions ...

@badp What expertise are we leveraging to answer that question?

@fbueckert The one of people who likely play games and like videogame music?

All non-game examples are called closable.

Well, yes, the font questions were pretty rubbish

AND NOW THEY'RE REOPENED?!?!?!
I have lost all faith in humanity.

4:43 PM
"they"?

Much of it is that the artifact being referenced is almost guaranteed unique.

Q: What is the Font Used in Pokemon Conquest?

ruberglyWhat's the font used in Pokemon Conquest's dialogue? More specifically, since I assume it's some proprietary font compiled compiled in the game, where have I seen it before? It looked extremely familiar as soon as I saw it. Here's an example: My first thought was Final Fantasy Tactics Advance...

Please to be identifying this thing that is unique and is not reproduced anywhere.

@OrigamiRobot That's one thing. Why the plural?

And is also not named.

@OrigamiRobot That was never closed to begin with.

WHAT

These questions fall into the same category as
They are, at best, trivia.
We're not solving a problem, we're sating curiosity.

They're objectively answerable questions about games

How does answering it help someone play a game? Spoiler alert: it doesn't.

4:46 PM
Spoiler alert: that's not our topic

@badp I can make a ton of answerable questions about games

You don't need to understand the plot of most games to play them, but we still care about them and answer questions about them.

I could make pretty much any question relate to games somehow.
Being about games is not in itself enough.

Q: First example of rising water/lava?

B. ElliottWhat was the first video game to feature a stage where the player had to start at the bottom of a stage and ascend a vertical path to the endpoint while avoiding a peril such as rising lava/acid/water? The first example I can remember was the original Rayman (1995), with several instances of thi...

Of course. If it's about the making of games or the designing of games then we don't care about those

4:47 PM
@badp We have specifically said plot questions are on topic.

How are different than these?

We have done the opposite for font/music questions.

@fbueckert ...and honestly we don't cater to those because we suck at them.

@badp So how are they different?
I'm honestly curious.

We can't answer them so we tell people to not even waste their time hoping to find enlightenment here

4:48 PM
They're both pointing at concrete artifacts, and can be objectively answered.

@fbueckert because it's much easier to say something about one thing in one game ("Who made this track?") than it is to say something about ALL THE GAMES EVER ("What's the first videogame ever with tentacles?")

@badp So we're better at identifying unnamed artifacts from single games than we are at identifying the first usage of specific mechanics?

Bioshock Infinite talks about Wounded Knee. I'd like to know what happened at the real Wounded Knee massacre.
That's answerable and just as much about games as the music/font questions.

Both scopes are expertise only loosely related to gaming, and I'd argue that mechanics would be more in our expertise than finding out who wrote a song is.

Of course mechanics are our core topic
That doesn't mean it's our only topic and everything outside of that area must be closed forever

4:51 PM
I'm not saying it should be.

Also today, I went to GameStop. Me: "How do you guys feel about the Xbox One?" Store clerk: "We don't sell those anymore."
8

But if we're closing questions about expertise that's closer to gaming, it doesn't make sense that something less related gets to stay open.

@fbueckert Who here is expert about all the games ever to make authoritative answers and votes on those answers?
Who here is expert about Red Dead Redemption?

@badp The same expert who can identify who wrote a song.
Which is essentially hours of googling.

@fbueckert It's in the credits. (Likely)

4:53 PM
@badp The question isn't about Red Dead Redemption.

-1
Q: What is the name of the score that plays during the Cochinay assault in the mission "And the Truth Will Set You Free"?

AubergineWhat is that epic music that plays when you fight your way through to Dutch Van Der Linde's fort in Cochinay? Starts here at 7:36: ...

That's what it's tagged.
I assume that's the game.

And?
That's the game the song is in.

Yes, so?

That doesn't make the question about Red Dead Redemption.

That's my investment into this conversation, I'm afraid. So I'm out.

4:55 PM
Later.
@OrigamiRobot What's it about then?

@badp The song.

Is it a song in the void of space and time or is it a song in context?
Would the question have been asked if the song wasn't in the game?

A song that happens to be in Red Dead Redemption.
2 mins ago, by OrigamiRobot
That doesn't make the question about Red Dead Redemption.
The question was inspired from the game, but it's not about the game.
