@MartinhoFernandes I've run it

12:24 AM
@MartinhoFernandes the essence here is to be funny.
If you can entertain, you can survive...
verbal tics can be fun, especially if they modify your speech patterns
Roughly speaking, choose whether you want to be a joker or straight man and choose your tic accordingly
It's also worth choosing a tic that makes you, the player, think before speaking

Q: What to do when in a table are many players?

apacayI have a table of 6 players. I have more people interested in playing and I thought out of people who had experience beyond many people's tables to see if things can develop the same or gets very complicated. What strategies are implemented to speed up the game?

1 hour later…
2:45 AM
Gah, I hate high-level 3.5 questions.
brings back flashbacks of when I had to assault asmodeous as a 7th level character and succeeded due to plot. That sucked so very horribly.
Hey @Jin! Welcome back! Long time no see :)

Hi there! I know that is a heavy question... I thought of a dungeon with forbiddance but with circles of teleport as the only way to go deeper in the dungeon, that way I can be certain that molding the wall will get them through since they wont know where to continue.
Using the qualities of some of the evil chars to make this tougher, like... I don't know, a Carceri like room (1d6 negative energy per assault) until they get the shackles (which prevent that from happening)
Or a room filled with water without possibility to breathe. May not stop high lvl chars, but perhaps it may make them spend their resources...

3:02 AM
heya
Well, the short answer is, as always, weaker people must rely on maneuver
Cause the problem with a dungeon is that the high level party goes to the first room, drops dispel magic, and if necessary just opens it like a clam
What's the composition of both sides?

Good guys:

mmm, also indicate if the evil people know a given fact or don't
since that can be important

A cleric of Tyr (justice), A mindbender, a ranger, a hammer of moradin with some crusader ToB Sauce, a Ninja mm I think thats all

mindbender...?
So, full casting cleric

PrC Enchantment sorcerer

3:06 AM
a... wizzy type with what, 7th level spells?
Okay, so , Tier-1, Tier-2, ranger ignored,
hammer of moradin isn't a caster, right?
and I need to look at the handbook for ninja

nope, but ToB can make him far more competent

But there are levels of competency

ignore the ninja as pc, just as ranger.

Okay, and what books are available?

3rd and 3.5... even I made "gestalt core classes" with Pathfinder

3:08 AM
...
oh.

Forgotten Realms all

... oh.
Well... uh, say hello to punpun for me...

hahhaa

Okay, on a serious note...
What has their strategy been for fortifications?
Do the cleric and the sorcy "win" or are they "support"
Is the party methodical about exploring or do they scry&die?
Do they and can they use disjunction?

The cleric does not go for support, he has a very good tactic for "im alone and noone knows nothing about this game" He can manage heavy stuff but, they have no party tactic.

3:12 AM
To repeat back to you. The cleric does tier-1 stuff and babysits the rest of the party?

The mindbender is used to find a good partner in the dwarf

say again, please?

@BrianBallsunStanton yes, he does

Right. Well, that's all that's necessary. The low-level evils cannot put up any kind of fortifications that will stop a tier-1 cleric
Their best bet is to attempt a scry&die of their own
(One of the reasons why 3.5 makes me grumpy/sad is... basically this)

My idea was to spend the resources of the cleric

3:14 AM
Is there a timer anywhere?
Cause the problem is the cleric can trivially recharge by doing the dimension hopping trick.
and can less trivially take a 5 minute work-day
unless there's some kind of deadline

The idea is that he cannot get out once he's in

How is that enforced?

Theres a Mythal forbidding it

Explain mythal, please?

I lack of english enough to explain, Spanish is my native language... forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Mythal but perhaps this helps a little

3:18 AM
No worries, mate :)
mmm, okay.
this mythal therefore, prohibits what schools?
Cause, as a tier-1 caster, I'd never even enter the dungeon.

Just has some spells with range of the dungeon, that work permanently. Such as Unhallow and Fobbidance

Assuming I don't just start spamming Miracle...
okay, so there's epic level unhallow and epic forbiddance
which cannot be disjuncted

yup

that's... a good start.
what does the unhallow have attached to it?
I assume dispel magic?

That's correct

3:22 AM
so unhallow against $casterAlignment...
ugh, I have no idea how dispel magic works with unhallow, wait one

so permanent magic functions randomly...

and I assume that this is an epic level dispel magic?

no, I can't do that...
Just plain Dispel

At what casterlevel?

30th

3:24 AM
So it is epic Dispel Magic
cool, okay.
but it must be area dispel because it cannot be targeted nor counterspell
mmm, and where is this mythal with respect to the building?
dead center, I hope?

yup, only can get there trough a portal
a built portal

"only"is a strong word
what is the structure built out of?

Stone, is a flying pyramid.
Do you suggest something else?, I'm open to ideas... Since the dungeon is being built with the other party and my ideas...
If those are plausible i'll add them.

well, here's the problem
I look at a stone pyrmad....
and go "awesome. I'll sit at the top and baloneyslice
If I can't do it myself, I'll bring a burrowing monster with me
or polymorph into one
if I can't cast, I'll bring a bloody adamantine pickaxe and just start chipping away
Mind you, I've always been allergic to doors

It can have some force parts

3:30 AM
for the unhallow I'll just bring the opposite of a darkskull with me
sure, but that's not the point

There should be no doors

And force is trivial to circumvent

only portals

With a pickaxe I just go through the walls
if there's a forcewall, I drop a disintegrate on it.
repeat
there are ways of doing that magically

remember you are spending spells on that

3:32 AM
Yes? But I haven't yet entered the dungeon :)

good point

and, rather more to the point, there's a nice big tube behind me
So it's good that they've suggested that the enemies use the prepared path
but no adventuring party past... 5-6th level should ever need to do that.
but it sounds like the easiest way is to just drop a miracle in
Since that overrides reality
But yeah, my strategies would either be scry&die or peel it like an onion
both the structure is inherently vulnerable to

oh inside the pyramid there is innocent people who are supporting the BEG's

which argues for both scry and die and peeling
to minimize civilian casulaties, it's better to ignore all the carefully planned "moral dilemmas" that aren't and just go to the boss
It does protect, slightly, from nuking it from orbit...
But only slightly.
Also, if worst comes to worst, cleric drops anti-magic aura, tells the other members of the party to break out the adamantine picks, and digs out

They will be some time doing that.

3:36 AM
Is there a time limit?

no there is not

So therefore there's no problem
Even the "hostage" problem isn't a problem
Either a) the party performs the logic correctly and doesn't change their plans on behalf of the hostages (it sucks to be a hostage)
or b) if the party feels really sad, they can just rez all the hostages after.
or c) if the party feels really really sad, they head to the appropriate plane, grab the soul, and planeshift
or d) miracle :)

There is a cuasi-dead god helping the BEG's That should help in some way.

quasi-dead? Yeah. What can this god do?

Add spells to the mythal, improve the structure of the building and show an avatar of himself, which since he's "dead" this is all he can do and the avatar is himself, so killed the avatar, the pyramydo goes down

3:41 AM
so the tactical objective of the good party is to kill the avatar.
Do they know this?

nope

does the party do appropriate research or do they rush in?
(Cause yeah, attacking where the enemy is strong is a chump's game... especially if you're the one with mobility and over-powering strength)
(This is, of course, why I suck at being a PC, because I try to apply logic and tactics to the silly narrative constraints)

they do some sort of research but not thoroughly, (don't know if thoroughly is spelled right)

no worries about spelling
have they met the antagonists before?

notebook went off low batt

3:47 AM
No worries mate.
Describe the evil party to me, please?

@BrianBallsunStanton only in a dream... where they die

@apacay that's enough for discern location
so we know where the pre-bbeg is , but not the fact that there's an avatar around.

yes, another stuff of the mythal.

what's the good party's normal modus operandi (way of doing things) for dungeon crawling

"only deific intervention.." says that spell

3:50 AM
mmmm, some quibbles about weather a dead god is a god, but that's fine. That's what miracle is for.
"My god is bigger than your god."

A Red Dragon Adult
A 15th lvl wizard
A mummy with 7 lvls of Cleric
A Blackguard warlock
A Rakhshasa Roguish
A 14th lvl transmutation wiz
A wizard lich 13th lvl

::wince::
holy tier-1 party
Okay, yeah. Best bet is for evil to manuver and attack
not defend
With the resources they expend in defeding, they waste momentum and initiative.

so, then, they should not use the pyramyd...

Nope.
Does the good party have any artifacts?

nope, just magic items

3:57 AM
right.
Evil scries, ports in, casts disjunction. Murders the cleric
ports out
waits for the panic to drop a little.
repeat.
by dropping disjunction, the evil party can cause a non-trivial powerloss to the good party
and then, as they start trying to get the cleric rezzed, more murders can take place after appropriate "encounters"
... important question. Does anyone in the party other than the cleric have plane shift?
in good party, that is?

mmh yeah I forgot to add a "shade" dude For the good party

If it's not a caster, I don't really care

kind of a duskblade
with shade planeshitft at will

once per 2 rounds

4:01 AM
okay, then two murders will be necessary
still, quite trivial for a group of wizards with plenty of cash to do

if there are some shadows that is

eh, muderization is better.

That murder plan against the cleric was "plotted" by them

cool :)
and?

But nothing serious, they only told "if we see the cleric we'll kill him first, everyone else does not matter"
have no plan

4:03 AM
...
::sigh::

=( i know

well, if their dead god can communicate, he'll note that 1)
scrolls of disjunction are cheaper than pyramids
2) good people are suckers for heroic quests
3) the bait and swtich is a classic for a reason
4) to make sure to capture the clerics soul using any number of ways.
I mean, a pyrmid is great for an "I love me" building, and great for "unknown future threat of not high value"
but really really really horrible against "these people are the ones stopping us from taking over the world. Let's sit here and wait."
Wow, I sound... very grumpy.
::sigh::

explain me first the numbers 2 & 3, Im not sure if im following you

okay.
Here's what I'd recommend if I was the dead god
Good heros are predictable. If you give them someone they can save, they'll totally try to save them.
Therefore, find some other evil who may be inconvenient in time... and make sure the good group learns how evil they are.

understood

4:08 AM
If possible, lie, and tell the good group the evil group is us.
When they're going through the encounter, at a opportune time, jump out and have everyone cast disjunction on the party. If possible, from timestop or other "don't bother trying to resist" setup.

"us"?
us who?

$us = Evilgroup with dead god
$Chumps = Other evil group we don't like
We send the good party after a bunch of chumps, and ambush them while they're in the middle of that quest.
we start by dropping disjunction on them, then the most powerful save-or-die spells we have.
Worst case is that they teleport out with no magic items left.
Rince, wash, repeat until it works.
Really basic tactics.

can Discjunction be made on a wand?

wand, probably not
staff or scroll
or magic device

I don't remember the rules for using a scroll of a lvl you can't cast
UMD?

4:15 AM
UMD can... but there are other ways
caster level check if it's on your spellist
which is trivial to cheese
mind you, Mage's Disjunction is a weapon of mass destruction in 3.5
It will seriously piss off a party
"You know all that gold you... had... invested in items?"
that you earned over the last 2 years or so?
buhbye.

lol, I know...
the good guys don't carry too much magic items nonetheless...
but probably will piss them off either way

well, they have daily buffs, right?

thats right

disjunction makes them go away.

persistance, cleric
poor cleric

4:19 AM
which can be... rather brutal for a party who depends on them
so yeah. Disjunct, be carrying daylight spells, and just save-or-die the cleric to death

a mirror of opposition could be useful? the BEGs have one

I love the idea, myself.
I've played with the idea...
But only as an intro to the trap.
It would be great if you could get the mirror to go off and then drop disjunction avoiding the mirrored eneity.
er, entity. That way you have a fully buffed copy of one of the characters...
hard to time well, and will put the party on their guard.
Better to scout the party, see when they're unobservant, set up a situation which will trigger the flaw, and exploit it.
Relying on specific enemy actions makes for a horrible plan.
And looking in strange mirrors is one of those things smart parties just don't do.
Mind you, if you do the setup right, "maze of mirrors" style... it can make for a great trap.
But that should only be attempted if the evil group can find an evil maze of mirrors :)
there's no sense wasting resources on it

that would go inside a roomlike place
aka pyramyd?

@apacay Yep. But note the distinction.
Nonononononono

oh

4:24 AM
in my scenario, the $Evil Team is leading the $good team to a completely different dungeon
and ambushing them in the middle, breaking the "narrative flow"
even if the good team is successful at the dungeon, the evil team a) hasn't lost anything, and b) can try again.
Misdirection is the key to fighting stronger enemies.

mmh, ok
Ill take your idea, thanks a lot!

I should go to sleep now
Here's about 1:35am and I have to be up at 7am to go to work

g'night, mate. :)
drop by tomorrow and we'll work on that large group question

@BrianBallsunStanton sameways!

5:14 AM
...

5:51 AM
@BrianBallsunStanton I'm up at 1 AM
not usually a good thing
hi @Jin what's up?

ChrisPOne of the PC who plays in my Encounters session has a power that lets him make a stealth check to hide if he has "concealment." @BrianBallsunStanton holy carp, man

what are we carping?

just... I hope to god no one is introduced to roleplaying by way of that conversation

oh
tactics.
I don't think they will be?

heh
not just "tactics"

elitist nonsense? :)

12:52 PM
perhaps!
it also makes me glad I've never played 3.5

yes.
that's really the annoying bit for me.
"here, we simulate a world for you. just don't think too hard about it."
so instead of having mechanics reinforce dungeon crawling
... you kinda have to very carefully forget ....
3.5 makes me exceedingly grumpy at high levels.
because dungeons are things players do to humor the DM.

heh

Wooo, I'm no longer negative on points this week!
I dunno, 3.5 tries so hard to simulate and then... doesn't hold up when edge cases like "farmers" and "high level spells" are considered

on which note, I dunno what it is, but for some reason the idea of a Mythal is very appealing

mind you, 4e goes "eeeh. Yeah, this potion is more expensive than a city."

12:56 PM
like, as a campaign-level plot hook

which also makes me sad.

4e doesn't try to simulate

And I do believe we've lost iszi

it's explicitly a gamist-centred system design, and thus doesn't hold up well when you look at it through the standards 3.5 is supposedly holding itself to
@BrianBallsunStanton Seems that way :{

1:07 PM
Oh, right, I meant to give you some feedback on the combat session of your LP
(and that really should be here rather than The Back Room)

oh, ... yeah, it should.

your readings of the flavour text in a deep impressive voice does not work
the text is onscreen anyway, and it's kinda long and Scales of War looks pretttty generic and hence boring so far

honest ...

after which, it was just quite awkward to see you flipping between a bunch of windows, tabs, and menus

1:11 PM
Basically, the fundamental question is: is this worth doing?
cause yeah, I need to redo everything..
right.
so the video doesn't work.

and my answer to that is... maybe?
but definitely not in its current form

fair 'nuff.
This is what experiments are for...
::Sigh:: I don't want to start toward one with two people

Two people who play off each other can make anything worth watching/listening to
ref: that stupid yogscast series with the four towers

eeerr
Toward One

oooh
reparses
yea, that's fair
it's been a slow time for us lately anyway
maybe @Iszi just needs some time

1:16 PM
yep

but yea, re: your LP, my strong instinct is to rework it as a screenshot+text thing

mmm
could work.

that feels like the closest optimal solution, as it were

In other news, 6 more bronzes before I pass bryant.

if you're willing to go significantly further afield from your original idea, I'd suggest grabbing a few people and recording your skype sessions

1:20 PM
mmmm

I don't know if there's something that could be made to work in between those two, though

that could actually work
any video?
or just treat it as a podcast?
In other news, can you add that as an answer to one of my LP questions?

mmmm, maybe. video of the combat with a battlemap-like tool? sure, can totally help

but not the fiddly stuff?
thanks for enduring the whole thing, at least

the fiddly stuff shows up in the audio
and hp displays and bloodied symbols and marks are useful things to show in the video just in general

1:26 PM
right

but not dice rolls, I'd guess
assuming your map tool is clever enough to separate gm info from player info, it could be useful to ask a player to record video

1:39 PM
the best parts, imo, of the whole thing were when you would go off on little tangents about why something was a trap or why this power is usually crap or suchlike
try to keep that, please :P

i.e., the "thinking about D&D" parts as opposed to the "playing about D&D" parts
that's probably a function of a) rants are always entertaining and b) opinions tend to come pre-prepared and have built in flow, not something intrinsically wrong with the idea of an LP of playing D&D
I'm just asking you don't lose that when the playing part starts to work
