@Aaron Don't do it. In my opinion those interlock things are not the best idea. It's too easy to overload the generator, since you can turn on any breaker in the panel you want.

1 hour later…
1:17 PM
morning @TheEvilGreebo
how you been boss?

1:27 PM
suffering from sick-lag
its like jet-lag but without the travel
got over the worst of it 3 weeks ago but I've been so drained of energy since :(
only finally starting to get back to feeling like me

1 hour later…

What happened to "Don't migrate crap"?

Q: What should I do if a short-circuit caused the power to turn off?

ChrisI touched the wires of a ceiling light holder with pliers, it made a spark and all of the power in my room was gone. What do I do now?

2 hours later…
4:21 PM
@Tester101 Call an electrician. You are too dangerous to play with wires.

4:50 PM
@ChrisCudmore Playing with wires is not dangerous (unless you poke your eye). Electricity makes it dangerous.

guns dont kill people - a person holding the gun, pulling the trigger of the gun while pointed in the direction of a person, then said bullet having been loaded in the chamber and hitting the person in a vital organ region OR the wound not being dealt with in a timely manor kills people

@lsiunsuex loss of blood usually kills them.

@Tester101 where'd it come from?

But I guess it depends on how you define dead.
@waxeagle Electronics. It's been dealt with.
The migrator apologize for making me angry.
I turned green and everything.

5:07 PM
their so quick to bash google, but when i chose google over bing, i can't share the results with anyone
admit that google is better than bing, close that piece of crap and focus on your floundering smartphone line

@Tester101 no sense getting mad when you can reject a migration.

No. Getting mad is much more fun

5:20 PM
@waxeagle Apparently the new policy is Migrate first, ask questions later.
It was better when mods worked together to keep StackExchange clean, instead of just focusing on their own little worlds.

5:40 PM
@Tester101 but the cost for one of those manual transfer switches (and install time) is huge, especially because my breaker box is a mess (furnace and some basement lights on one circuit, etc) and I'll clean that up later

Boo-hoo, doing things right is expensive, and hard :(
The cost of paying for electricity (and installing a proper distribution system) is huge, but people keep doing it in just about every house. It would be much cheaper and easier to just tap the service, and touch the wires to the cord of the device you want to power.
But that's DANGEROUS!

@Tester101 just make sure you get a QSE to perform the tap :)
(that's qualified slum electrician)
(and qualified means he did your aunt's house and he's still alive)

6:09 PM
You mean like the guy that wired my grow op?

@ChrisCudmore sure, but even less qualified.

Gotcha.

I used a goto

Good grief, how are there 142 people who would absolve that?

"i use ruby" hahaha

I work for Oracle was one of my favs

6:23 PM
my only confession for today: i needed to programmatically create a UIButton in Obj-C but i'm tired and running out of time so I changed some other stuff and did it in a XIB instead

My confession is - I don't know what that means

the uibutton is just a button like any other - but instead of writing it in pure code, i used a xib - which is kinda a way in xcode to wire up ui elements with objects and events in code

Q: Soundproofing a room cost effectively

AbaraxI am looking to get the most bang for my buck when attempting to limit the noise coming in to our bedroom from the neighbours house. The cost of re-plastering the wall is out of the question. I have searched around the internet and found that perhaps the large majority of the noise will be comin...

neighbors of oscilatingcretin?

@BMitch can't be, he anticipates noise from his neighbors :P

7:01 PM
I got one of those aspirated this morning
it was exciting

that looks painful

7:16 PM
There's a good one: I sometimes spend hours thinking of ways to use math instead of complex if-else-switch chains.

"I use StackExchange constantly, but I just read the already existing conversations. I'm afraid to ask questions because I'm convinced they'll be the dumbest questions ever. "

I have a girlfriend.

THAT BASTARD

personally i try to save my dumb obj-c stackoverflow questions for when i really have a problem. usually, google answers it for me anyways
"I think people who willingly code in PHP should not be writing software. " and the one "I think web developers are sissies." - wtf - i've made a damn good buck off of being a php programmer and i'm very good at it
the more coffee i drink, the more tired i am in the afternoon - i must have drank an entire pot today

7:41 PM
@lsiunsuex supposedly caffeine is most effective if you drink it in the early afternoon

yeah - not working - could fall asleep right about now

@lsiunsuex when was the last time you had protein?

couple hours ago? had a cliff bar - 10g worth - had a banana around 10am, turkey club and fries for lunch

@lsiunsuex no clue then. That's my usual "I'm tired" culprit

yeah... the more i work (and this week has been non stop for me) i forget to keep up on hydration and eating well, reverting to coffee and candy - need to stop doing that
although i have noticed this week as i've tried to re-write my iphone app in obj-c, i've cut back on smoking - my focus has been high trying to learn obj-c and to step away for a smoke would be a distraction - unfortunately, i'm just about done (trying to go live this weekend) so i'll probably go back to my usual smoking schedule haha

7:56 PM
I get 3 alerts for PUT, dong from this room's notice, ding from the calender entry on my laptop, and buzz buzz from my cell phone for the same calendar entry.

@BMitch you weren't going to be permitted to forget :P

When I miss it, I get the buzz buzz from the phone, but I'm well away from my laptop to join.
Welcome to Project Update Thursday
My work here is done. drops the mike, walks off stage

i learned that one of my doors has a kerf yesterday and the proper rubber molding i needed to insult it

I hope you insulted it badly.
Making fun of its mother usually works.

crap - i get it now
oops

8:06 PM
@lsiunsuex I can fix if you'd like

if it appeases the grammer nazi's - so be it

Don't fix it. Then it makes me look stupid.

fairy nuff, I will not abuse my modship today

That's not a grammar error.
Looks to me to be an autocorrect error

grammer, spelling - whats the difference - at the end of the day, their all descriptors for man made characters that when combined convey a message or meaning

8:08 PM
And your meaning was "I'm angry at my door. I shall mock it relentlessly."
Generally, I prefer cursing until the kids run and hide.

but the first 3/4 of the sentence implied that i was using rubber molding so in the context, it could be assumed that i ment insulating, not insulting - why would you want to insult a door with a kerf? what did it ever do to you? huh? HUH ?

@lsiunsuex Oh kerf you

Actually, I thought you mean "install"

:(
next thing you know, people will complain about why programmers don't use proper sentences as variable names because using concocted words is improper

bool myLifeIsTotallyPointless = false;
myLifeIsTotallyPointless = testValueOfMyLife();

8:14 PM
Nah... There's something to be said for terseness.
But Perl and their "$_" is just carrying it too far.

if(myLifeIsTotallyPointless){iShouldCommitSuicideBecauseNobodyHasAnyValueForMe()‌}else{yayI'mSignificant();}
yeah reading that would be pretty tedious
and depressing
@ChrisCudmore same for jquery, the bastards and their capitalist dollar signs

@TheEvilGreebo + nightmare for the code completion algorithm

Frankly, I can manage +=- () and basic punctuation. After that, I have to peak.
And don't get me started on hand coding html type languages. Don't put your main symbol on a shifted key.

same could be said of most c based languages = { }

It's a bit backwards, when you think about it
if C/C++/C#/Java used [] instead of {} then their decorators could use {} instead of []
and decorators are used so much less it would make typing easier...

8:21 PM
Or, I could just learn to type.

or *sql using ' for field encapsulation - because no one writes text with ' s in it - got it!

@lsiunsuex Yeah, that's a nasty one.
Or sql in general.

ment to imply all sql with the preceding * - like people write *nix to assume all types of unix / linux

@lsiunsuex I don't understand your complaint. It's totally natural to write three single apostrophes in a row ;)

@Tester101 Did you do anything PUT related this week?

i like @ChrisCudmore 's format - i usually put a blank line above and below the comment though

It's 2013. Doing ascii art was so 1987

I bought some cutlery sorters for my tool drawer at the dollar store.

we bought bad breath treats for our black cat

Anyone have opinions on the smartkey rekeyable locks? amazon.com/Kwikset-992J-15-SMT-CP/dp/B004EPYSH8/…

I'm a luddite. I don't trust technology to work reliably.
I'm still on POTS because I don't trust VOIP to actually work when I need it to.

call dell support located in India with telephony services provided by VoIP = fail

8:35 PM
I've got an external battery pack for my cell phone now, when the battery backup for my cable modem/router/voip dies, my cell will last for days and I can drive somewhere to recharge for another few days if there's an extended outage.

@BMitch or just get a car 12volt charger?

@lsiunsuex I've got several car chargers, but I don't want to run my car or drain my car battery in an emergency if I can avoid it. But I've done it in the past.

8:53 PM
should get rep for killing a chatroom

thats very funny actually :)

What's the cheapest most secure way to share photos and videos?

@BMitch like

@Tester101 usps?

8:57 PM
@BMitch Stamps are expensive.

@Tester101 dropbox.com

but you get amazing bandwidth, as long as latency isn't an issue.

Is dropbox safe?

@BMitch I have that style on my back door. I installed it about a year ago and have no complaints so far. I've got these on my front door and I'm not so happy; the mechanism tends to stick making me think it'll break soon

dropbox is secure and as long as you keep the folder private and share it with select people it is
or a private account on youtube.com - but it only does video obviously
found this yesterday - its new i think - copy.com/home - 5gb of free storage as apposed to dropbox.com's 2gb of free storage - same deal - encrypted, can share and has os x and windows apps

9:02 PM
@NiallC. my neighbor complained that his only works with a spare key now, so I'm guessing it doesn't hurt to rekey it from time to time. But if you have to do that on a lock, then you may just want a standard lock unless you need the ability to easily rekey it.

@lsiunsuex Why not just use Drive
Since I already have a gmail account?

that too - but same as anything else - i've been on dropbox for so long why move

When I share a link, can anybody with the link see the file?

sure

So if somebody intercepts, or guesses the link address, they can view my files?

9:05 PM
well, i should say, i dont use gdrive

It's actually the lever on my front door that sticks, not the lock. Haven't had to re-key mine yet.

with dropbox - only people's email address you grant access to can see it
can u share photos on gdrive?

I heard that the Schlage rekeyable locks are less reliable than Kwikset.

@lsiunsuex I think

o o, gdrive has 5gb space also
hmm

9:09 PM
gdrive gives you share options.

so the same as dropbox
i'd think they'd all be the same by now - permission wise

@NiallC. ok, that helps since my doors are both the deadbolt and door knob style, no levers.

does gdrive make a pseudo folder on your windows pc?
or rather, can it?

@Aaron yes

9:12 PM
And then there's Microsoft's SkyDrive.
I depends on who you want to trust.

gdrive seems to default to "Private" while DropBox does not.
Dropbox doesn't seem to give you a way to make links private. You share a link, and anybody with the link can see the file.

on dropbox you invite people via email
or you can anyways - had that happen the other night - shared a folder with my boss but i sent it to the wrong email address
so he accepted the invite but logged in with a different acct

You can invite people via email.
I just shared a dropbox link, and can view it with no problem from anywhere as long as I have the link.
When sharing a link from gdrive, it defaults to private, and lets me change it easily.

9:29 PM
It should spell out for those of us that aren't familiar with every detail of Tesla, who Elon is
