That's worth a star, if it wasn't so long.

@GeorgeEdison indeed. askubuntu.com/a/253200/88802

That answer is so full of win...

thanks
Was about time for an awesome Q&A today.

Maybe we could re-open this? It still might be off-topic, but there isn't a good way to tell right now. Lets give the OP another chance.

Okay.

9:15 PM
thanks :)

what's the deal with avconf vs ffmpeg in 12.10 btw? I see that ffmpeg in 12.10 has deprecated and "users are adviced to install avconf instead" in Software centre..?
Hmm. some data has been lost in the SE migration. Some upvotes I casted are unset now..

@gertvdijk There have been reports of questions/answers disappearing too.

@Seth yes. thought I saw that too. WTF happened? any MSO post about it?

@gertvdijk There were moving their servers again.
let me fetch the MSO post brb

yeah I know. but they had a read-only freeze.
okay

Q: New earned reputation does not add up after Website migration

iTechEarly today Stackoverflow was on read-only mode due to migration, but since it is back new reputations does not add to my total reputation. See the attached screenshot, the expected total reputation for today should be 325 but it is only showing 305 Edit: After associating my meta.stackoverfl...

thanks

hey, I lost 10 rep too.

status-bydesign. oh lovely.

That one hit the rep cap, though, no?

idk

9:24 PM
yes, that question is just user error.

gotta run.

@Shog9 Also, the migration that just happened missed certain things. There was an upovte for this question, an upovte for Manishearth's answer, a couple of comments, my edit on the question..they all disappeared now and the views were 82 but now 49. — KingsIndian 2 hours ago

thanks @Seth and @FEichinger :)

9:27 PM
@gertvdijk also, @AbrahamVanHelpsing used to have an answer on this question: meta.askubuntu.com/questions/6021/how-to-watch-for-hidden-gems
gone now.

@Seth exactly the question I was refreshing and seeing it disappeared. thought it was just me
It looks like there're a few minutes of loss - I'm working on getting them restored. — Jarrod Dixon 52 mins ago

So ... someone clicked the backup button a little too early, then?

@FEichinger They. screwed. up.

Obviously.

On Meta AU we lost an answer to this question: How to watch for hidden gems?. There were two, the one answered by AbrahamVanHelpsing is gone. — gertvdijk 22 secs ago

9:33 PM
oh, did we actually lose data in the move?

Quite much even.
Lots of shortly-before-move votes and posts just ... disappeared.

jrg
nice

We certainly lost data, yes.

I suspect they started backing up the database for the move slightly before they closed down all the sites, and some stuff got stored too early. Or they screwed up timestamps, or something silly like that.

jrg
that defeats the whole purpose of a master-slave sql database setup.

9:38 PM
indeed.

jrg
anyway, they have a reason as to how and why they did things, so i won't argue.

should not have to loose a single transaction

jrg
well, they are a MS shop, remember that.

sigh

@jrg Was about to say that.

9:39 PM
Being an MS shop is no excuse for losing data

It's an explanation, though.

not quite

jrg
in my experience, it's a heckuva lot easier to shoot myself in the foot on the windows servers than on the linux ones.
then again, my experience is vastly out of whack there, so.
take it for what its worth.

and experienced windows sysadmins will say the opposite :)

jrg
i've yet to meet a experienced windows guy under 25, but I hang out primarily with people under 30, so yeah.
anyway, i like puppet. it works, i like it, it does magic, i'm in love. ;P

9:42 PM
heh
puppet can manage windows systems too these days, can't it?

jrg
supposedly.
i installed the agent once, but never did anything with it.
wasn't sure how i'd install packages without a package manager.
(software in the case of windows)

On an unrelated note ... Apparently this is a thing.

jrg
@FEichinger i asked for that for my birthday
i think marco owns it
or maybe it's the jersey.

dear god...
an Ubuntu bananahammock

Q: "Authentication Manipulation Error" when trying to reset my password

kiran theteto reset forgotten password in 12.04 LTS. I am able to boot the computer. i choose root option and then come to password changing. they ask me to enter new UNIX password which i do type. but at last they give a command saying AUTHENTICATION MANIPULATION ERROR and my password is unchanged.

useful question, two good answers - but "abandoned" - what to do? leave it alone?

@Seth i didn't delete it
Also, it doesn't show as deleted as in undeletable. It's purged somehow

@guntbert If an answer works or looks like it should work - Vote To Resolve. It is safely considered "answered" by the system if an answer gets two upvotes.

@FEichinger, I already upvoted, but I am the only one yet

That's why we post such Qs here, with a "VTR" note.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah. Thanks for the feedback.
On Meta AU we lost an answer to this question: How to watch for hidden gems?. There were two, the one answered by AbrahamVanHelpsing is gone. — gertvdijk 1 hour ago
Oh my word. I hit 185 just for today. Maybe I can hit 200 on my own for once :D

10:46 PM
Oh well. So I'm not the only one I guess. It wasn't a hugely important to have answer. It was just there as a slightly different take on the thing.

yeah, in order to get we needed more feedback..

Q: Accessing DVD or USB drive

WendyWhen I insert a DVD or USB drive into the computer it does not open. Are there additional drivers that I need to install? I know the USB drive is working because I installed Ubuntu using it.

now this one: is it useful, worth keeping?

11:13 PM
Thanks guys its working now — Wendy Jul 8 '12 at 22:56
OP solved problem.
Should no be closed as TL

@Seth true, but is it really useful for others?
btw, what are those numbers I see beneath our avatars in the chat?

@guntbert No, it's not. It could also be closed as NARQ, but TL is better in this case in my opinion.
@guntbert The numbers show all your reputation across all of SE added together.
So,

Hiya. Kinda lost. rl usb-creator usb-live problem. Question #154299. I have observations re question and all 4 partial answers from my attempts to solve the question. Am I supposed to discuss this in the meta or file a bug report?

@guntbert Network-wide rep, including all sites, not only 200+ sites (like the flair does).

that explains it, @Seth, thx

11:20 PM
@LantzR I'm not sure I understand your problem.
Could you post a link to it?

Q: Why isn't Startup Disk Creator working in 12.04?

ChelmiteI'm trying to create a bootable USB stick (7.5G) for Ubuntu 12.04 (x86_64) from another Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 PC. I downloaded the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20120425). When I run Make Startup Disk, I selected the downloaded release. The drive shows up with a capacity of...

thanks

@FEichinger so I could increase that number just by joining a few more sites ;-))

Yep.

I can not ask the same question as that would be a dup

11:21 PM
@LantzR So, none of the answers worked?
@guntbert Also, when your SE rep reaches 10k, you can review chat flags.

nvm

Not exactly. UNetbootin got me a working live usb . But that does not fix the issue with the Startup Disk Creator

@LantzR Oh, in that case, your Startup Disk Creator problem is probably a bug.
Check launchpad if you find anything like that.

I found that using GParted got me around the stupid erase function in the usb-creator.
I found a whole new issue where one usb-creator chooses an iso file in the dialog you con not get it to select a different one. workaround is hide any others in a different folder.

probably a bug.

11:28 PM
The comments on the answers re rebooting are just that the drive gets mounted.

@FEichinger I need a tester if you're interested :)

@Seth Depends on what you need one for. :P

Q: How do I install LibreOffice 4?

SethI want to download and install LibreOffice 4. How can I do this?

The workaround of launching from terminal made no difference.

@Seth I'm on Windows right now, sorry. :/ But I'll try it as soon as I reboot.

11:31 PM
@FEichinger Okay, thanks!

I'm also running the same 12.04 and using usb-creator-gtk v 0.2.23

@LantzR All I can say is file a bug report. Seems like one to me.
If you can create a bootable disk/USB another way then do that.
Check this out:

Seth: so regarding the Question. Will someone add the comment that there IS a bug.

@LantzR You mean the canned comment "Report a bug"?

Or as I originally asked is this something I suppsed to Ask as a question to either Ask or meta

11:36 PM
@LantzR No, it isn't. AU Meta is for questions about this site or it's operating policy's.

Ok so not on meta.

No.
You should report the bug to whoever makes the software.
If it comes with Ubuntu by default Launchpad is the place for it.

Seth all I can do to the question and it's is the useful post yes/no button.
I can not add any comment about the suggestions that do not work, or the other work arounds that do work

Ah, now I see.
@LantzR That isn't your question, but you have the same problem?
Is that right?

I could ask a duplicate question, but I could not post my own answer.
Correct. The question is valid, not written by me. and beating up on me now.

11:40 PM
@LantzR Then you should file a bug report.

.. or post my own partial answers

@LantzR wait, do you have an answer?

or Seth. I will file a bug report. Would you at least post the comment that there is a REAL issue.

sure.

Seth the tool is broken. 1) stupid erase button. 2) Created drive does not work. 3) iso selector broken

11:45 PM
done

Solid workaround for 1 is GParted. UNetBootin Works but had to use GParted for it too.
Cool Seth. I will come back here when I get a bug#. Thanks!

@LantzR Sounds good. Good luck!

did anyone see that link to the ubuntu cycling unitard? really threw me when i saw it...

yeah really.
I'd like the backpack and stickers for my keyboard, but that o_O

On backpacks and carrying cases I'm more a Pelican kind of guy. The messenger bag might be okay though

11:49 PM
Heheh. Yeh, that was my first thought as well, when I saw that link on twitter.

Did you see this?
16 mins ago, by Seth
user image
Kinda weird.

that is a little weird

Ahyup.
Probably a lack of GET parameters when requesting the image.

Anyone need a black-hat hacker?

lol
that made it to the blog.

@Seth There are some other good ones there.

yeah there are.

i guess bradhacker@aol.com was already taken...

^--- I love that one too.

lol
WAZAAAAAAAAAAA
I managed to clear my votes on AU and MSO and clear the close vote review queue in the last 5 minutes of the day

On April Fool's Day, we should log out and "suggest" some humorous edits as anonymous users.

@GeorgeEdison that would be funny.

9999 Man, this message needs some stars...

That would look funny with one star ^^

somehow I got 220 rep today though...

probably should have put a message behind it, but you get the point
