"while in america they haven't spoken it in years".

yep.
I mean, yes.

@GeorgeEdison I'm thinking of having the really small version just the "N" because of proportions
those are other options

Hmmm... yeah, the 'N' by itself is probably best (for the tray).

that is probably the smallest it will get, I think the unity menu bar is slightly larger

12:26 AM
Yes, the Unity panel is much larger.

@GeorgeEdison here is the license I was looking at, creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/legalcode

Sounds perfect.

12:46 AM
GCC 4.7 for Precise PPA - for those interested.
3

Thanks!
I'll take a look at it in a moment.

there is a lot of extra stuff in the file, basically everything I tried, there are sections with the final versions, and some icon experiments on the top left. So you can pick based on the application.

Q: Graphics fuzzy in Ubuntu 12.10

SankaranI am new to Linux and Ubuntu. Having just installed 12.10 I notice that I get fuzzy text and icons that change when I move my mouse over them. See picture below as an example. What could be wrong and what can I do to fix it? I have a NVIDIA Quadro 600 graphics card.

@mateo_salta Great, thank you!

1:06 AM
cool, let me know if any of it needs fine tuning.

@LuisAlvarado LOL
If that didn't go outside my vocabulary I'd get one ;)

For a quick course of vocabulary see here - eatliver.com/i.php?n=10194

okay....

that is so funny XD

1:33 AM
And I think last would be - eatliver.com/i.php?n=10200

hehe

Did you know that in a study made by several universities, it was shown that 83% of all young people have back pain
Did you also know that another university made a study where they concluded that 13% of all young people don't have a computer.

Who does these studies?
Washington state did a study on "The Sources of Sawdust"... who do you think made that up?

the people that sell computers and back pain relief pills

lol

1:37 AM
@Seth it's a joke btw hehe
83% have back pain, 13% don't have computers ^^

yeah I know :)
My Dad has a saying:

reminded me of this guy that actually said that some alcohol called 120% or something like that had... 120% more alcohol lol

"83% of all statistics are made up"
@LuisAlvarado lol

heheh

1:39 AM
You know if you try to log in to chat while the you have been logged in...refreshing page happens, you get a really interesting error page

lol

oh man, poor hairy dog ^^

I'm thinking that's a panda...

i know lol
hairy dog lollllll
lolll
sorry night time right now
my comedy level goes up at night

Other people need alcohol and/or drugs to get their comedy level up - @LuisAlvarado only needs a little less sunshine!

1:44 AM
@Seth i doN't knOw how to capItalIze properlY ;)

Yo daug imma gonna let you finish but that star is the best star!

‮★

And when I got home today, my laptop was turned upside down like someone had been taking the underside off while I was away...that would have been more disconcerting without luks and a LONG passphrase

1:49 AM
@LuisAlvarado Someone needs to take the yo dawg meme pic and put the star explosion animation from audiosurf behind it. yo dawg i heard you like stars. would be epic

"Someone" could always just be ... you!

I know, but I suck at gimp

whoops, they changed their domain.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Don't use gimp then.
@Seth they
You can do a third edit, and you know it! Come on, go for it!

good grief. Lots of Typos today.

1:52 AM
yeah i googled it. that's interesting, but i don't think i'll be satisfied until i can wear my laptop as a shirt and have a retractable touchscreen or holo-screen pop out of my arm

@Seth TRIPLE-EDIT HATTRICK

lol
So I'm reviewing an edit
> updated since the package manager no longer is standard on ubuntu: i just said to install it
Uhm, there isn't a package manager in Ubuntu by default?
I got Synaptic by default.

they must want synaptic
i didn't...

weird.

no wait, i'm on alternate...hold the phone

1:55 AM
grabs phone

:/ not funny. they did switch default present package managers a while back though
@Seth are you a native english speaker? hold the phone is an expression meaning like "wait a minute"

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yes I am a native English speaker.

okay. i didn't know if it was facetious humor or not knowing an expression

goes and sits in bad puns corner

my AU handle puts me in the bad pun corner every time i log in
you won't be alone...

1:58 AM
lol

lol

Nutella is nutty.

@Seth It's funny you said that

2:01 AM
You know you are a Tolkien fan when you actually have this book on your room - lh6.googleusercontent.com/-tAVse9hl5iQ/UQlr7Z1MzRI/AAAAAAAAp9o/…

Nutilla the hun?

I'm eating some right now

@JourneymanGeek LOL

Basically Amith likes "nutty"
3

@LuisAlvarado: I do. And the trilogy. And at least one of the book of lost tales

2:02 AM
@AmithKK :)

I put away the legend of sigrud and guidrun and that the longer version of the tragic tale of children of hurin

Got only the trilogy in both formats, the one where each book is alone and the one where they are all together on a huge heavy one. Got Silmarillion, The hobbit and mr bliss

the former is too dense. The latter too depressing

I wish I had them here, this were the only ones that came to my country

@LuisAlvarado i could eat nutella with a spoon

2:04 AM
lol
darn you people

@AbrahamVanHelpsing - Don't... use your hand hehe
if anybody dislikes it, slap em silly
they'll enjoy it trust me

I was just mentioning how we lack nutella and chocolate chips so I couldn't make nutella, peanut butter (the proper stuff that seperates when left standing) and chocolate chip sandwiches

Nutella+Dosa :P

i have broad palms. i wouldn't be able to scoop properly out of the jar unless they came out with a jumbo size

@JourneymanGeek yeah, the stuff that seperates

2:05 AM
ummm jumbo size

not a combination I'd personally try

@AbrahamVanHelpsing You can use the cup pack

Chem exam today

@AmithKK: when I was a student overseas, I used to buy those, then wash them up for use as drinking glasses

2:06 AM
So here I was in the store looking for something good when.... cdn.uproxx.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/…

^^ like that size

@JourneymanGeek same here

though

I would be the happiest guy on earth... for the following 10 minutes

there used to be a place run by an old relic that had freshly ground peanutbutter

he should make his apparatus arduino or raspi controlled and save himself some time
speaking of, interesting breakout for raspi: amesberger.wordpress.com/2012/08/02/…

talking about that, I am waiting for a Raspberry pi I ordered like a month ago, anybody got one of those and tested the thing with xbmc?

2:11 AM
Top questions is out again :/

Shh everybody... jrg is in the house

jrg
whats with the new page?

It's out.

jrg
i like the new look guys.

aaa ok I thought it was my internet connection when I saw "Top questions"... empty.. Was then looking for "Bottom questions" ^^

2:11 AM
@LuisAlvarado i hear it works, but i haven't tested. is there a raspi xmbc sdcard image floating around? i'ld happily take it for a test-drive

Nothing has changed since the beginning

jrg
@AmithKK and how does it know about Phil Ballew?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah, debian based. Well several but the one I was testing is debian based

ah, there we go. As always.

raspbmc

jrg
2:12 AM
i really like the new look though.

@LuisAlvarado: probably cause the 'main' raspi distro is debian based

@LuisAlvarado raspian...yeah.

@jrg What new look?

yeah, just mentioning that I saw one RPM based, don't know if it was fedora or something

jrg
@Seth the new front page.

2:13 AM
/me doesn't see new page :(

@LuisAlvarado cool beans. i understand.
there seems to be a lot of arch flavor floating around the raspi community too

Everything resets at 0:00 UTC right?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I'm buying a preloaded one, I'll let you know how it works when it arrives.

kk.
lazyp was talking about running xmbc on a pi

@jrg screenshot?

jrg
2:16 AM
@Seth of the new front page?
I like the new look.
nice and clean.

ah, now I get it.
Works for me now.

jrg
lots of whitespace

clear your cache

they must be testing the drag throw scroller code live...and have a malfunction

jrg
or something.

2:17 AM
^^ no they're not, but it would be an awesome feature no

jrg
maybe.
not sure how i'd use it though.

3 mins ago, by Seth
Everything resets at 0:00 UTC right?

it would only be handy for people that read relatively quickly. maybe not drag throw, but scroll could be nice
@Seth no. only meaningful software like stackexchange resets at 0.0UTC

jrg
well, that chat flag is funny.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing that's what I was trying to ask

2:20 AM
rimshot

@Seth Pretty much, yes. Some stuff refreshes at other times, but for most it's 0 UTC

@AbrahamVanHelpsing @LuisAlvarado thepihut.com/collections/sd-cards/products/… I'll let you know how it works, I ordered one (on it's way)

nice
that website needs help naming their tutorials though. wifi on the raz-pi is so much catchier than "How to configure wireless on the Raspberry Pi"

@jrg oh?
@FEichinger Good. Just making sure.

jrg
yes, "oh" describes it.

2:36 AM
I almost want to punch you :P

jrg
what, about the chat flag?

If you're going to talk about it, you kinda have an obligation to tell us what it is.
If you can without getting into trouble.

maybe someone flaged for raspi stuff

jrg
it was a mod-only chat flag, in another room. was probably a mistake to say anything. :(

don't talk about the fight club.

2:41 AM
@jrg probably... if you aren't going to reveal it.
shrug
nbd

@jrg yeah, i was gonna say. i didn't see a flag pop

@jrg Your site appears to be down.

jrg
everything is loading here

ah man, I have like 104 views on my entry for the 13.04 wallpaper

jrg
i would have been alerted if it had gone down

2:46 AM
jamesrgifford right?

no it's not. mine is, but it's in a state of service provider flux at the moment. i'm making some decisions

Huh, if I do www.jamesrgifford.com it doesn't work

jrg
why do people do www?

but if I do just jamesrgifford.com it works.

jrg
setting up the cname now btw

2:48 AM
@jrg idk, habit?

I guess your not on the "world wide web" part of the internet

1&1 fails at setting up DNS...at least for me

jrg
weird, why is it doing that.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing 1&1?!?!?!

@Seth a web provider (brand name)

2:50 AM
@mateo_salta yeah, but, 1&1?? You use 1&1?

jrg
there, fixed @Seth

it was 5 years ago. they were taking out funny full page ads in linux administration magazines with interesting giraffes and foreshortening. i paid yearly and it was cheap so i never canceled it.

yep, works now.

jrg
i've no problems with 1&1 @Seth

nah, I use godaddy, thinking of switching because people at church think it's some pron site because of their tv adds

2:52 AM
shrug
I was just looking at 1&1's BBB page.
Nice to know some people don't have issues.

they were fine. think about the bazillion people that want to host websites and the 5% of them that have any idea how to do so.
the DNS fail is not so huge a deal.

jrg
just migrate to cloudflare

only one percent of bazillion is...another made up number that is astronomically large

@jrg @GeorgeEdison Said he wouldn't use Cloudflare... starting to get conflicting information :P

i'm looking at a vps and a paid dyndns subscription

2:55 AM
Hey guys. What's up with the AU front page? Active questions have been coming up blank for the last half hour +.

jrg
@Seth he doesn't like cloudflare for reasons he hasn't fully explained to me.
i've had a issue, once.
and it was when i was still reading through DNS & BIND, 4th edition.

shrug

jrg
and therefore didn't understand how work world.

I'm not going anywhere anytime soon I'm afraid.
This has got to be the coolest question title ever:

Q: Kitty appears when viewing Schedule tab of chat room info

Mechanical snailI clicked on a link to a chat page, and it is giving me the kitty "Oops! Something Bad Happened!". Happens both logged in and logged out. The same thing happens with other rooms' Schedule tabs, e.g. on Mathematics chat and also on Stack Overflow chat.

jrg i didn't know you were subscribed to the nmap6 ppa...

jrg
2:57 AM
was i?
oh, yeah
i was tinkering with it
couldn't get the deb to work though
/me should probably delete that ppa

jrg
and gone.

@Mechanicalsnail if you work for SE, I noticed that when the system was logging me in AND I clicked login concurrently. Like a race condition on the redirect and sending another auth request

@mateo_salt Cool. kittehs in our Intarwebz! Should be fixed soon then. ;-)

2:59 AM
teh handelz it purfectly!

I had the greatest answer evar.
But, too late...

@maggotbrain did you see the failing panda slide?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing You mean there's a bug that only affects SE employees?

@Mechanicalsnail no i meant if you wanted to send some specificity on that bug up the chain

@AbrahamVanHelpsing flailing pandas?

3:01 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing I don't work for SE. I'm just a temporary moderator on Linguistics.

jrg
wait, waht
where did that screenshot come from
why is seth posting a aking screenie

@Seth That is more funny than I needed. excellent.

XD

@jrg it's from further up in chat

jrg
3:03 AM
@Mechanicalsnail get used to it, they think we have super powers and can make SE employees fix bugs.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing oh, i'm just missing the scrollback

silly panda. Do they have opposable thumbs?

jrg
see, if my grepping script doesn't alert me to "mod", "jrg" or "oli", then i don't worry about it.

@Seth commented there by the way...hope they find it helpful

jrg
why do people need CLAs and NDAs
seriously. why.

@jrg ★
next time I'll say Sathya isn't here.

3:07 AM
you should change your name to Sethra and your gravatar to Tygra. just saying...

@AbrahamVanHelpsing lol

it's missing an random.shuffle(eggnog) <-- the javascript equiv of that

@jrg why do people need TLAs?

jrg
@JourneymanGeek you mean FLABs?

@Seth The python one is verbose.

3:09 AM
no, TFLAs ;p

What did I expect from developers...

Can someone that's not a moderator try posting the text http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/8036506#8036506 as a chat message? I want to test something.

@Mechanicalsnail That must be the Ruby one.

i no cycled through them...sorry. the python one is subtle in that dictionaries are unordered by default. nice touch sir...nice touch

What's this about CloudFlare?

jrg
3:11 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing: Know a place i can get some fake AV software? asking for a educational purposes, can't seem to find any.

He says there is a C# one... I can't find it.

@jrg install ie 6 in wine and browse porn sites for 5 minutes. you'll find one.

Lol

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing something a little more specific?

3:13 AM
@Seth It's the 4th one.

I was afraid that was it.

@jrg erm...let me check. i'll see if i can find something

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing heh. :P
i figured that'd be in the certified ethical hacker book i found, but i can't find anything.

jrg
@Mechanicalsnail on page 50, nothing yet.

3:16 AM
@Mechanicalsnail You have to declare variable type in C#

@Seth var means to infer the type.

It should be string eggYolks = 12;

@jrg it's a silly exercise to think that a particular chunk of malware will be there as an example

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing well, i guess.
oh hey @minitech.
nice of you to join us.

\o/ \o/ \o_
(That's a crowd of happy people - one of whom has a broken arm.)

3:18 AM
@Mechanicalsnail ah, OK.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison sounds happy.

dinner time.

@jrg There's probably something like you want in the contagio collection: contagioexchange.blogspot.com/2012/03/…

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing ok, thanks. i was originally asking for @minitech, but now i'm going to be running all this stuff in VMs to find out MOAR.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Hey, that seems good :)

3:23 AM
hi @Mini - yeah. there are a couple of historical sample compendiums floating around

3:34 AM
Good morning @jrg

Q: How to completely remove ALL flavours of Ubuntu from Ubuntu Studio

smartboyhwEr, this may be crazy, I installed all flavours of Ubuntu (Ubuntu Desktop, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, Mythbuntu) onto my computer. Now I want to completely remove ALL to get back my Ubuntu Studio. Is this possible? I would like a terminal solution like sudo apt-get remove ...

@GeorgeEdison ;D

@jrg @GeorgeEdison Do you recommend running your website of your own server at all?
Not a full blown server of course.

@mateo_salta It takes a little while to update that

3:46 AM
@mateo_salta watstamp that please

it seems like lots of people are showing up as snowflakes

also, i want a rubber stamp on my desk and a red ink pad. And it should have WAT with a box around it in the worn gappy style of box and text

@Seth Do you mean like a VPS?

@GeorgeEdison Yeah, I think that's what I mean.

It depends on your needs.
Does your website consist of static files or are you using a scripting language?
(Such as PHP or Python?)

3:48 AM
maybe some Python
I refuse to use PHP

Me too :P
In that case, it may be worth looking into a VPS.
There are companies that provide shared Python hosting but I find it easier to set things up myself.
With one exception of course, Ondina.
(No, @Marco didn't make me say that :P)

@GeorgeEdison What if I wanted to run my own server on a desktop I got for free?

Running your website on a desktop computer is not recommended.
Mechanical hard drives are not designed to run 24x7.

OK, that's what I thought.
@GeorgeEdison Is that the only reason?
I was thinking it was for security or computing power.

The other reason has to do with network bandwidth.

3:53 AM
@Seth Computer power

Most consumer ISPs provide very fast downlink speeds but slow uplink speeds.
...and since traffic on a web server is mostly upstream, you're going to quickly run out of bandwidth.
For example, my uplink speed is 1/8th of the downlink speed I'm getting right now.

Hard drive not designed to run 24 hours a day wouldn't have 5 year warranties (ahem seagate), but I agree with you on bandwidth

@GeorgeEdison I was also afraid of that.
doesn't look like a good idea.

This is a new spelling:

Q: Cant get obuntu to work on my G5 Powermac!? Gahhh!

user129678Okay Ive been trying to get obuntu to work for literally days on my new g5 powermac. I read up some things but im new to macs. Anyway ive downloaded the Iso file, burnit it to the cd through diskimage, and when i restart and hold C it just gives me a huge spam of white words on a black background...

"obuntu"

Obuntu?

I'll edit that one.

They are crying about running Ubuntu, but they have the money for a Mac? There should be an Ubuntu Mac consultancy somewhere
5

that's no help.

tastefully redacted
