@vasa1 Yeah, if the post you downvoted was deleted, you get back the one point.

@jokerdino, thanks for clarifying :)

You live in Mumbai, don't you? How is life there?

Slightly north of Mumbai, in Vasai. Life? Got used to it :)

:)
How did you run into Ubuntu?

Oh, a Gutsy Gibbon CD came with a computer magazine. I dual-booted then but never figured out how to get the internet working. But I kept watching Ubuntu's progress from the sidelines and finally got everything going with Natty Narwhal (when I got "unlimited" broadband). And,really, it was the Unity bashing that piqued my curiosity! I just had to see for myself!

6:17 AM
XD
@vasa1: I swear thats too common
though with my first distro, I got stuck with 'how do I install stuff?'

I actually got hooked into Ubuntu seeing Unity. I didn't like the old fashioned Gnome 2 interface.

My first distro was mandriva
seriously cute french girl I knew used it, and said it was awesome
then I switched to suse
then kubuntu

The first mention of Linux was thanks to a Red Hat expo.

Well, as I said, I had issues getting the net going with Gutsy Gibbon, probably because I wasn't competent enough. I'm a biologist with no "IT" training.

Though I never quite comprehended what the hell it was. People said it can't get viruses. Or it didn't have any GUI.

6:20 AM
@vasa1: more likely there was some bug ;p
tried it on a laptop?

@vasa1 Ah biologist in IT field. Interesting.
I am a wannabe in so many fields.

XD
/me is a aspiring sysadmin who knows which end of a soldering iron to hold

Now, I'm using it on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. BTW, I'm not in IT at all unless hanging out here or @ ubuntuforums qualifies :)

Using Ubuntu qualifies you enough.

I'll come back to Unity if my laptop dies and I have to buy a new one. That's why I'm watching this whole UEFI thing worriedly.

6:23 AM
@vasa1: Its VERY unlikely you will be unable to install an unsigned OS on a system

I've learned quite a bit ... HTML, CSS. I even know how to "scour" svg files. But Ubuntu is signed, isn't it?

I would just buy a preinstalled Ubuntu device.
ah, power cut. damn
bbl

Not readily available. Despite all the talk of Canonical Stores.

ahh, TN ;p
@vasa1: It is, or will be. I believe
but you should be able to turn off signing in the bios if you chose to
there's also plans for a generic 'shim' linux loader

I don't mind power cuts. We have them too. They keep my inverter battery in shape. Needs discharging once in a while. The real pain is low voltage. That can be sneaky.

6:28 AM
lol
@vasa1: tamil nadu state has been having it REALLY bad

BTW, the local user group is quite subdued :(

mine is too
course, I have the whole 'I run windows and linux, but I'm really just in it for hardware' thing
;p

I was in Madurai for my PG and we had to "aerate" flasks of bacterial cultures by swirling them ourselves when the power went out :(

7:11 AM
Night all.

Q: Can I get banned for deleting my question?

Nick RosencrantzI want to delete a question I asked but I don't know exact consequence. I'm going to try to delete a question I asked that was a duplicate (but it's not closed, it's just marked as duplicate). I don't see much reason to keep a duplicate, do you?

the SE team I think.

Hey @AmithKK

Q: Is it possible to receive an electric shock by touching a Raspberry Pi while it's on?

Highly IrregularThis is a question of safety for children using the device while they are still being shipped without a case. The USB power source is expected to provide 5V and at least 700mA. Is this enough to give a shock? Do any components on the board step the voltage up, giving a higher voltage? Capacit...

Wow this seems common

two registered accounts no - unregistered to registered yes

ok got it. thanks!

are most of the guys here Mods?

Just three of them.
Make it four.

9:48 AM
how many points do I need to become a Mod?

Though only 2 of them are mods in Ask ubuntu.
@mojo706 You need 300 rep to nominate yourself for the election, which is currently in nomination phase.

300 wow that'll take some time

It took me the whole of this year to get 100 rep.

not really - just be a little busy with answering a few questions - you could do that in a day.

@mojo706 It shouldn't be difficult. But one thing that might be useful: Do you have any useful flags?

9:52 AM
@fossfreedom No you can't

what are flags?

Isn't there a rep cap?
Or just get a +500 bounty

@smartboyhw ?

@AmithKK rep cap is for upvotes -you've got bounties and accepts on top of that.

But one thing, are you related to Mojo Jojo?

9:54 AM
certainly we are distant cousins shrug

Haha, nothing to shrug about that.

@mojo706 For example, if you see there is a duplicate post, you should be able to see a "flag" button. Click on it and choose the reason why you think it should be flagged (duplicate in this case), select the dup question and confirm:)

@smartboyhw oh I've never flagged duplicates although Ive seen several

@mojo706 Try to:)

@jokerdino haha
I will

9:58 AM
@mojo706 if not then when you just got 300 rep and nominated yourself for mod, @fossfreedom will then certainly come with a comment saying that moderatorship is seriously unglamorious and that how would you consider having a low helpful flag-count will help

:| and also try and answer many more questions more accurately @smartboyhw TY

@smartboyhw yes ... all true

And with no hesitation

But now I’m breaking out and
I’m falling into the free, to the free
Free to be me I am free, I am free

Q: How do we deal with answers by customer support that basically don't answer the question?

nikhilI came across this question today, this has been answered by someone who is presumably a customer support person for the company. I don't think there's anything wrong with this as long as it answers the question but in this case it's basically a message like we're sorry for your problem please ca...

@Takkat I was told the scammers started with snail mail, then switched to telephone calls and now e-mails.

They obviously made enough money to survive. This is the most worrysome about them. How can people be so naive?

Well, you only get the telly if the supposed party comes into power.
@JourneymanGeek heh, that's another story.

Q: Why are KDE apps running on unity too slow to load

BarefegI use a few KDE applications in ubuntu; Okular, Kate and Kile. And it seems to me that they take a lot longer to load than other programs like Evince and gedit. Is it because I'm running unity instead of KDE or is that just the way it is? What can be done to reduce the loading delay?

easy answer folks!

A: Changes to "close as duplicate" (part deux)

SethI'm not sure if this belongs here, but it was rather long for a comment so here it is. This is what I see happening: When it comes to bugs on Ask Ubuntu, Rachel asks why we don't just close them all as off-topic individually. On Dennis' answer above Servey suggests that most (some at least...

@gertvdijk @FEichinger --^

5:56 PM
We aren't really talking about Ask Ubuntu, we are discussing why this change was implemented. IMO how we should close the questions is a rather different topic. We had been closing them as duplicates, until this happened. Maybe this calls for a question on AU Meta. I think though, if we want to close them as duplicates we should be able too. — Seth 28 secs ago

@Seth +1

Glad you agree.

Closing as a duplicate has benefits: It automatically links them together (no need for an extra comment), it is a close in itself, it redirects users to a single question. If it is a dupe, we should preferably be able to close it as a dupe rather than the same close reason over and over again. Not to mention that the dupe target may well receive an answer "It will work in version X" or a workaround at some point - not necessarily when it is posted ... or posted for the fifth time. I just don't see why we have to restrict anything. It should be site policy instead. — FEichinger 13 secs ago
