Q: Viewing a screencast encoded with camtasia.

HandyGandyI have downloaded the screencast on this page, http://jaderholm.com/screencasts/org-mode/. I can watch in firefox but the viewer has limited controls. So I would rather watch it on a regular video application. The thing is I've tried everything and I get sound in all and video in none. "media...

Q: SSH slow at starting session

penguin359Starting an Interactive shell over SSH is slow to one of my servers. Everything leading up to it including negotiating encryption is fast, but then it hangs for 45 seconds. After that, it finishes and I have a shell. How do I identify what it's hanging on? I tried clearing the environment and...

davidshen84I install GRML on my USB disk with the grml2usb tool. But when I boot from the USB, it first boots to a blank screen with "boot:" text on it. I must type the boot options myself to boot the system. I want it to boot to the system automatically. How can I do it? I am new to GRML, and I checked the...

@FaheemMitha Looks ok. You only fixed the formatting, right?
It's a bit cheesy to do it in two steps, but <shrug>

Q: Where can I find which packages are on each Debian Squeeze CD?

Matthew FlaschenI just installed Debian Squeeze on my E1505. In order to get my wireless card working, I'm trying to install network-manager-gnome (I already installed firmware-iwlwifi) My current question is, how can I figure out which CD this (and its dependencies) is on, and in general where is this listed...

@Gilles: Thanks. The two edits weren't intentional.

Q: Killing a few meta-tags (and please write tag wikis)

GillesI just killed best-practises (a misspelling of a meta-tag). I'm not fond of tips-and-tricks, troubleshooting, homework (homework discussion) or unix (unix tag discussion) either. Will anyone speak up for these tags? Aside: I encourage y'all to go over the tag list and Write tag wikis for the...

I'm not sure this is worth taking to meta, and it is not unix.sx specific, but neither of the two main formatting methods available are completely satisfactory if you have a block of text you want to be preserved more or less verbatim, but which is not code. You currently have option 1: block quote, which doesn't preserve newlines etc, and option 2: code, which does, but colors it in unexpected ways, assuming it is code.
Option 2 is preferable, but how about a "display text but don't color it" option?

A: Syntax highlighting: what about answering with a different language than the one used in the question?

Jeff AtwoodThis is now implemented. In addition to tag inference (a recent change), you can manually specify the language as a hint to Google Code Prettify. The spec is: <!-- language: lang-or-tag-here --> code goes here <!-- language: lang-or-tag-here --> code goes here You may u...

<!--language: lang-none--> (it's a new feature)

@Gilles Thanks. That's handy. Will try.

Q: File permissions when transferring to another server

If I was to chmod 777 blah.sh on server A and then move it to server B, would it retain the permissions, or would it default to some other permissions once it hit server B? Thanks in advance.

Q: Trouble with DisplayLink device in Linux virtual machine.

George EdisonI have a virtual machine running Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit. Using the tools provided with VirtualBox, I have added a DisplayLink device to the VM and created the following xorg.conf file: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Server Layout" Screen 0 "DisplayLinkScreen" 0 0 ...

This one really has me confused.

@GeorgeEdison Your question has me confused, too (maybe just because it's past my bedtime). What is supposed to be displayed on the DisplayLink device: the X server running inside VirtualBox (since you're showing xorg.conf in the VM), or the VirtualBox console (“The actual VBox window is blank”)?

@Gilles I know, it's confusing...
I have a VM running in VBox.

What is “the console”: the VirtualBox console, or the display of the X server in the VM (which should be on the DisplayLink device)?

When I say the "console", I mean the VBox window.
The one that displays the BIOS and initial boot info.
However, what I want is once GDM / X starts, for it to use the DL device as the primary display.

11:43 PM
When you write “I have to press Ctrl+F8 to get back to the GUI.”: does that show the GUI on the DL device or in the VB window?
Are there two X servers running? If so, try with only one, to keep the confusion down

@Gilles In the DL device.
@Gilles I thought only one was running.
How can I be sure?

Run ps -t tty7 and ps -t tty8
and ps -C Xorg

K... just a sec.
GDM had to restart.
Nothing's running on TTY7.
Xorg is running on TTY8.
ps reports the same thing.

Run DISPLAY=:0 xrandr (from any shell on that machine)
and DISPLAY=:0 wmctrl =l(to see if the panel is in there)

11:57 PM
The X server looks fine
Can you start a program, say DISPLAY=:0 xterm?

Yup.
...and xterm displays in the DisplayLink device as expected.
I typed that into gnome-terminal on the device.

Then everything is working apart from Gnome?
