12:01 AM
Developing a WP theme from scratch is very time consuming indeed
it is worth pointing out that there is the "previous entries" link - it doesn't show all the posts on one page

@nhinkle dp what you can....

@KronoS I don't think it should look too much like the main super user design
it needs to be distinctive - if things look too much like SU posts, it'll be confusing
i do like the idea of integrating some of those features

I don't think so as well...but I feel like we could do better than what we have now

agreed
what is your goal in having voting? i don't personally see it as being a useful feature, but might be overlooking something

Eh... there was no goal really
just thinkin out loud
gotta head out though
cya l8rs

12:04 AM
see ya
I would not personally support that feature, I don't think it has a purpose
I find out sometime this week if I get the internship I've been hoping for. If I don't, I wonder if there's a possibility of Stack Exchange hiring me as an intern to develop an integrated blogging platform for SE sites
it's a long shot, but would be quite fun
@KronoS it says "MISSING IMAGE!!" on your latest post

2 hours later…
1:42 AM
@studiohack you were asking about another question i thought was underappreciated
1
A: How to hide drive for specific users in Windows 7?

nhinkleThere is a group policy setting to disable access to certain drives, and another to hide access. You need Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise to do this. For other versions, scroll down to my alternate solution. If you only want to apply the policy to certain users, not every user, yo...

i don't think you can open 2 bounties at once
and i don't think you ought to give me two boosts, if that was your intention

2:42 AM
@nhinkle ya I know I'm going to be putting it up later tonight. Is it live?
Ok good it's not

@nhinkle we'll see... :P and no, you can't do multiple bounties...I was going to award it to you, but TomW wants to try and answer the question this weekend, so it is only fair that I let it run its course and pick the best one...

3:16 AM
@studiohack, that's definitely fair :)
I'd like to see what he comes up with
@KronoS I thought it was, but maybe I was wrong...

It shouldn't be.

2 hours later…
5:02 AM
Hellow @GeorgeEdison :D

Do you like it?

yeah, it's nicely formatted and I like the topic

Great.
Any advice on things I could do differently or fix up would be appreciated.

I also saw your question earlier about AskUbuntu

Oh yeah, the dupe :P

5:03 AM
I'll drop them an 'answer' pointing how easy it can be to create content that's relevant to the site only
I made you an account on the blog so you can upload it (trying to get it out of pdf would be a pain in the *ss)
you can put it on pending after that, so the others know they can review it

Thanks. Gotta run now, so I'll try to get this done tomorrow. Thanks for looking it over! :)

6:01 AM
@IvoFlipse you around?

oui

hi
been working on the browser post
about to start uploading graphs

great
and it doesn't work? :P

no, it's been working fine so far :P
no complaints, just an update
i was utterly baffled by that draft post on "levels" though

ah Matts post

6:04 AM
yeah
i mean it made sense, but i've never really seen any reference to it on SU before

I was hoping there was some link back to the real world with regards to troubleshooting

it seemed a bit out of place with the other posts we have

then we'll have to ask Matt if he knows how to get it back into orbit somehow

dear excel team: wtf is with not including a built-in way to export a chart to an image

hoeray for screenshots?
with Windows Live writer you can drag and drop

6:11 AM
i'm copying them to publisher, then using its save-as-image feature

I'd take a photo, print it, put it under the scanner and import that into word
I need to find that question about practical jokes

i have to go

sleep well @nhinkle :)
we'll see what we do with Matt's post
and good morning @ThomasMcDonald
let's do some convincing on Ask Ubuntu :P

user30
6:39 AM
Morning, I'm not going to be on today, deadlines tomorrow.

12:25 PM
oui?

yellow
I've been blogging like crazy. I made a few changes to the pet aligator one (saw your comments earlier) - I'd like your opinion.
I also have parts 2 and 3 done - with more to come
It's all a sort of series you see

I guess that explains it ;)
I'll have a look right now
btw Jeff would prefer if we somehow fed our blog posts with original content back to the site
I see your post about virtualbox is much more complete than the current answers ;)
as for your network troubleshooting question, that goes somewhat nicely together with Jeff's own question/answer about how to find out if SU is down for you or everyone
when @nhinkle comes back, he can help you make the articles more 'applied' and hopefully so that I fully grasp why I would need to know it
but I like the general look of the articles
have there been any particular questions (perhaps older ones) you think could do with a facelift?
especially because nobody picked a QotW yet :(

Q: Super User Questions of the Week #10

Ivo FlipseNow we're into post 10 of the "Top Question" of Super User in the Super User blog. Please post and vote for your favorite question for this week. Please post any question that you feel is of worth and the reason why. Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity sake. We are l...

Q: What's different between Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+C in Unix command line?

EonilI'm using Mac OS X Terminal. And I use Ctrl+Z or Ctrl+C to stop some programs. But I realized that I don't know exactly what they're doing. What are they and what's the difference between them?

nvm, Mark managed to get himself in the spotlight again for some awkward reason

Oh, one question for you - about the blog layout and it's CSS

I bet he has his whole school vote for him
lol, I warn you: I'm a noob when it comes to making stuff, I'm a user

heh
Go to edit the diagnosing your network post

Q: Can I transfer a Windows 7 license to another computer?

calibanI was thinking of buying Windows 7 Ultimate to be installed on an old computer. In due time, I will be giving this old computer away. The question is: Will I have trouble transferring the Windows 7 Ultimate license to another PC? If yes, do I need to watch out for any issues? What exactly is ...

and scroll down to the little picture of the windows desktop with a command prompt open on it

This one is 'abused' to close questions, I think we should do a blog post (points @mokubai) about it and feed it back to the site

In the editor it is aligned to the right (floats to the right of the text)
It doesn't do that in the preview.

I see what you mean

it should do - it's out of place otherwise

12:41 PM
let's point @nhinkle and @ThomasMcDonald at this when they get back

excellent

Q: How do I preserve an unused computer?

Agnel KurianI have a netbook that I am not using but would like to preserve for posterity. What precautions do I need to take to ensure that the machine does not undergo any deterioration? The machine will remain switched off most of the time.

this one or the one about downgrading Windows are interesting as well

A: Encase it in carbonite!

Q: Can I legally downgrade from Win 7 64 bits to Win 7 32 bits?

AltarTired of the unstable Win 7 64bit I got when I purchased my laptop (it was impossible to find a powerful laptop with Win 7 32 bits). Can I legally downgrade from Win 7 64 bits to Win 7 32 bits? The key/activation will work? Details: Everybody comments about the stability of Win 64. Well, I m...

btw @KronoS we need a new target for our interview! I'll ask John T if he wants and else we might pick Wil or Daniel
Peter Mortensen could be interesting too, he's close up to studiohack with edits

Our Final full review of @KingstonSSDNow V100 SSD! http://bit.ly/eAcOMa #SuperUserBlog

12:48 PM
Anyway - my thinking behind my blog posts is not so much to answer an existing question, but to cover a topic that we get lots of similar questions asked about. So instead of pointing someone at a third party site with instructions on how to do things, or on information about what stuff is, we can point them to our blog instead - keep it more in-house.

A: Is the Super User Blog the new 'Generic Question Community Wiki'?

Jeff AtwoodHmm. I'm not sure about this. I think I would prefer that we pursue the concept of "canonical questions" .. Help us build a great library of canonical answers. If you keep seeing the same form of questions, whether it’s mod_rewrite rules on Server Fault, freezing computers on Super User, or h...

@MattJenkins

yeah I understand that @MattJenkins, I was trying to point you to Jeff MSU answer @KronoS just linked... :P

Yeah, that sort of thing ;)

I think Jeff doesn't want us to create original content that doesn't end up on the site (where it gathers rep or whatnot)

You can put so much more in the blog though, and it's not tied down to any one specific question

12:52 PM
Yeah, but with some of your posts, we should simply ask a question just for the sake of pointing to that blog post :)

Or go through existing questions and edit them to include a link to the post?

well @MattJenkins in some cases I would simply take the liberty of completely invalidating the accepted answer and put something decent in there :P
especially if the question is somewhat old

heh
@IvoFlipse Why's it all about games? ;)

@IvoFlipse I'm assuming that changes I make are seen by you in real time right?

yeah

12:59 PM
I see changes realtime

oky dokey

there's nothing scheduled for tomorrow?
I liked tzenes suggestion for adding a schedule
that way it's easier to assign 'tasks'

A: Super User Questions of the Week #10

Ivo FlipseWhat's different between Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+C in Unix command line? Mark has once again managed to get massive rep for a great explanation of a pair of 'simple' Linux commands. Control+Z is used for suspending a process by sending it the signal SIGSTOP, which cannot be intercepted by the progra...

Do we want frivolous stuff on a friday then?

Feel free to add other suggestions, but we might already ask Mark to try and write another blog post
it's April first

true

1:10 PM
WTF Friday!!!!

it needs to be a joke then?
you could slip me in weekly if you like (fnar fnar)
if I sort my 3 posts to feed back to the site better?
I might change the order of the posts actually

well we should make sure we can get this whole table (nearly) filled
then we can perhaps even try to post more than one post per day

start with the network diagnostics, then the levels, then the virtualbox
or I might shelve the levels one and replace it with stress testing the network

@IvoFlipse I think we might be to the point where we need to create a twitter account for the blog

we should ask them to hook our 'hot' posts into the StackExchange twitter one
or they should make an account SUblog and have it tweet both our blog posts and hottest questions

1:18 PM
k will create the meta questions after I get my HW done

great, I'm back to work for a bit

2:12 PM
@IvoFlipse can we consider a purchase of this software:

yes we can
the private version I hope :P

Uh ya... I don't think we constitute a buisiness quite yet

I'd go with this one
so we have both pc and 3D
we can add to the list: how to properly benchmark your computer

I think we should start to create a google doc for proper testing...
here's another one, but it's way overpriced
I got these ideas from anandtech

yeah, Futuremark is good for that
you just need to prepare the computer the same way as they do for max performance
it doesn't work on my pc, where I actually try to us it as well :P

2:18 PM
you guys are really doing great work with the blog...you deserve more than tshirts :)

k cool... I gotta get ready for school... I'l talk at you l8rs and pan out more details on this
@studiohack thanks
but TBH I'm just havin fun doing this all

that's the most important thing :)

oh its true @KronoS, and yes I know what you mean...I finished my first blog post, EVER, which was about the BIOS, its ready for review...

great @studiohack

have you checked it out @IvoFlipse?

2:22 PM
yup

good enough?

I believe it's scheduled
For this sat or sun

@nhinkle scheduled it...
okay, sounds good

Which means it has my stamp if approval

Saturday yes

2:24 PM
awww, that means a lot @KronoS :P scheduled for this Sunday
the 3rd...

that will be fixed @studiohack ;)
check the Google docs -->
and star the hell out of that thing

ah okay @IvoFlipse, doesn't matter to me :P

I'm out of here again

bye @Ivo

2:39 PM
@IvoFlipse looks like I might be able to get in... if we pay the 400$

2:49 PM
then Grace Note will have to go or someone else

3:19 PM
Cool! Let em know... This would be a great thing for the site

@KronoS Seems I forgot to favorite this room, missed out a lot in the transcript... :-/

You can in the Gaming room ;)

3:49 PM
@IvoFlipse am I putting together the April 1 post or you?

4:01 PM
Here's a Dropbox Folder that I've created for the SU Blog

great idea
I really need to make some progress with my application :(

Then get back to work!!! :P
What are you working on?

well my paw program
I've been messing with a UI to fill in some database info today
at least it functions
now I need to embed it in a larger frame, to do thing like search the database and call this little screen for adding subjects

So are you self employed?

then I need to make something that let's me add measurements to the subject and process these (AKA annotate all the paws)
yeah you didn't know that? :)

4:06 PM
Well I assumed, but wasn't sure... How does that work out?
You just go to companies and tell them you can program?

at the moment it doesn't work out at all, because I need to get this application functioning
I have the code to analyse data, I just need the GUI around it to make it usable for others
previously (well still actually) none of my results were in a database, so reboot == bye bye data and I didn't just pickle it to my disk either
and if I wanted to look at data of one or more dogs, I had to calculate it for every dog and I would get a ton of graphs
calculating averages for all the dogs is a huge pain too

Why becuase the huge amounts of data?

so hopefully now when I wrap it up in a GUI that takes care of that my own life will be easier
and because I just needed to bite the bullet and learn something about databases

Hmmm... Today is world backup day?
It's World Backup Day... but... What Files Should You Backup? http://goo.gl/DAtO

I wouldn't know

4:12 PM
Should get @Wil to write up a post about his NAS

good idea
we really need to get some original posts out there :P

well gotta head for a bit... I'll be back on in a couple of hours

np, I'll see you later

oh, is that what the flag is for? are we deleting it tomorrow? @IvoFlipse, you wrote it ambigously...

5:05 PM
Urgh, is there anyway to get rid of the times new roman font on the "Visual" editor on the SU blog?
Hate Times New Roman
Must be some default font rubbish in FF4

5:21 PM
> @Sathya @IvoFlipse It has been resurrected. We should promptly kill it and revive it on the hour every hour for the next however long April Fools lasts. Make it like the Star Trek movies. Odds and evens.
@studiohack, but don't tell!
@Mokubai, I'm not touching any settings :P

@Ivo, does yours show it in Times New Roman, or a good font?
Hmm, looks similar in Chrome, still serif, but not as rubbish.
Hmmm, could it be the blog site is setting it to times new roman for that editor?

5:49 PM
BTW @IvoFlipse do you know if the cuckoo clock works as a startup program?

6:15 PM
lol in bold letters
ever heard of crashplan? It looks worthwhile investing in....

can't remember honestly

@Ivo: Oh, here you are.
Forget the invite then.
Anyway, I finished putting in the post.
...but I have a couple questions.

shoot :)

First, what category should it go under?

Apps I reckon

6:23 PM
Okay,
...and so for future articles, (like part 2 of this one), I can just create a new draft in WP?

yeah :)

Okay, great. Thanks for letting me do this!

well no thank you for 'doing your part' :)
btw I tried leaving a 'convincing' argument on meta.AU

@GeorgeEdison might I suggest possibly making the post friendly for multiple OS's...
linux is great, but if the post was a more general then it'd be even better
esp for future reference for SU questions
and THANK YOU!!! it's a great post

@KronoS: Thanks for the tip!

6:32 PM
No thank you for contributing

Any ideas for how to make it more friendly for other OSs?
I'd like to make it appeal to everyone.
What the...?

LOL @GeorgeEdison

There's not much more you'll need to add as far as text, maybe instead of "video for linux 2"

looks awesome @GeorgeEdison, I'd love to read a post about VLC

and the /dev/video0

6:34 PM
@studiohack It isn't April Fools Day yet!

say something like "select your default capture device" or somthing along those lines
@GeorgeEdison that's been apart of this for some time

Just SuperUser?

I would also add screen captures of all three OS's
yes...

@KronoS Unfortunately, I only have access to Windows and Linux.

but other SE sites have different easter eggs

6:35 PM
something like that...I've gotten some really funny ones
nope

@GeorgeEdison Mark Zymanski or @Nhinkle can help you with MAC screen pics
I also think @ThomasMcDonald has a mac as well

Okay, great.

user30
Yeah.

Do you think I should do one screenshot of each platform?
The first one in Windows, the second in Linux, the third in Mac - perhaps?

Any news on the CSS tweaks for right-aligned pictures in the blog yet?

6:38 PM
If it's pretty much the same then I would go with the latter
but if there's an OS specific option that needs to be addressed be sure to point that out with a screen pic

I see, so which ones should I change then?

@MattJenkins still trying to figure that out
Ill let you decide that... you know what your doing, and you've got great screen captures. You'll make the right decision :)
@ThomasMcDonald I was just saying that I thought you had a MAC and might be able to help out with screen captures...

user30
Yeah, I do, is it time critical?

user30
I'm only really sat here tonight incase everything falls to pieces

no not at all... it's for further down the road
and doesn't have to be you either

user30
6:42 PM
@MattJenkins CSS tweaks? I'll have a look through the transcript in the morning and fix it.

It's simple enough - pictures that are aligned right in the editor (floating to the right of the text) aren't in the finished blog. Just need float: right adding to the css for those images

Q: What should I look at for a comparison between Google and Microsoft?

KronoSI'm going to be putting together a blog post(s) comparing the Cloud computing powers of both Google and Microsoft. Here is a List of what I came up with to compare: Email: labels folders junk sync with outlook all in one solution alerts Chat: Link to other chat clients Calendar:...

@ThomasMcDonald the "alignright" css class

@MattJenkins if you know what you're doing, I believe you can just edit the css yourself
I don't touch it cuz I don't know what I'm doing...

I don't like to tinker where I'm not sure if I'm allowed or not ;)
and I have no idea where to go to edit the css for wp

Q: What is cloud computing?

Gavin MillerI hear about "cloud computing" all the time, but don't know what it is. What is it's purpose? Why do I need it? What problems does it solve? What problems does it create?

@MattJenkins I don't care if you do or don't.... just don't mess it up lol...
Also you should blog about this or answer it in a better way than others have answered it

I don't see anything in WP for editing the CSS - I don't think I have permission?

7:02 PM
Ah nvm you're not an admin... I thought that you were...
I'm not going to change that I'll leave that decision to @IvoFlipse

heh
wise move ;)

so otherwise we'll just leave fixing it to @ThomasMcDonald for now

.alignright { float: right; }
I have hard-coded the float right into the image tag for now, but it shouldn't be necessary.

agreed, but that's the way it is for now :) It'll be fixed soon

7:51 PM
@IvoFlipse you should interview this guy
and can i haz one?

user30
8:02 PM
Oh, Black Dwarf was pretty cool.

it would be interesting to interview other people as well

like?

the guy you just proposed
I should see if I can score an interview with the guys from Soluto
or any (in)famous developer of our favorite tools
btw @ThomasMcDonald we had a great day yesterday, today not so much but strangely that seems to go for a lot of sites :\

user30
Thursday productivity day, much like the one I'm having

user30
A last surge before the end of the week ;))

8:07 PM
even SU's traffic is somewhat down

Hmmm interesting to see what tomorrow brings
lol it's actually productive day for me too... currently working on the Google vs. Microsoft posts

great
did you see the Practical jokes Docs

Yes...

8:28 PM
well for now I'm going to disappoint everyone and hit the decks early
we have a family talk at my sisters clinic tomorrow, hoeray! so I won't be on until somewhere in the afternoon
so hopefully someone can help you write up that April Fools post

@IvoFlipse I'll get someone to help me out...
maybe @nhinkle'

worst case you only highlight the top 5
the cuckoo's clock is a classic :P
and the desktop screenshot or bluescreens should be easy to reproduce
I might be able to look tomorrow morning, very early but it would depend on when you want to have it published
anyway I need to go!

l8rs @IvoFlipse good luck tomorrow.
Best wishes

8:47 PM
Grrrrrrrr

@KronoS Grrrrrr? woof!

lol I'm trying to draw a simple box or circle in GIMP and can't seem to do it

loads gimp
Select a box, use selection->border then fill the gap?
That's the closest I have found so far
I usually use Photoshop rather than Gimp

Don't have the money for photoshop just yet
but I figured it out

cough*torrent*cough

8:54 PM
select then edit>>Stroke Selection
@MattJenkins I'm trying to avoid those now
My "jimmy cricket" got the best of me

Oh, nice - never knew about stroke selection... I'll be stroking my selections all the time ;)
I am trying to switch to 100% open source, but I am finding things that I just can't do as well as I can in 'proper' software...

It's so true...

wtf?!
I thought microsoft were the only to$$ers who did that sort of cr@p
Is SU written in VBA macros in word?!

user30
Ahahaha.
