@GnomeSlice Oh, I assumed they ruled it off-topic and deleted the tag at the same time. I guess they didn't

@Gwen We ruled it off-topic but it took a while to clear the tag from the system because of how many there were.

@Gwen Deleting the tag took a long time, we had to go through all of the tagged questions (there were hundreds of closed ones with the tag), and remove them all.

There was no "delete everything with this tag" button? :(

@Gwen Nope.
That would be too dangerous.
Although I don't see why a 'remove all instances of this tag' couldn't work.

@GnomeSlice It could leave us with a bunch of questions.

7:09 PM
@Wipqozn I suppose, but we'd have to delete those questions anyway.

That would also be really dangerous as well.

I forget, do we close game rec questions, or delete them?

If someone accidentally deleted a tag we would then need to revert all those questions.
@GnomeSlice All closed questions (except dups) are eventually deleted.

@GnomeSlice Yes.

Q: Are questions about a game's community on topic?

LuckRecently, I have seen two TF2 questions (here and here) asking about trading in-game items with other players, and specifically the value of said items. These questions are not about on the game itself, but about the community and players of the game. Additionally, they sound like shopping advi...

7:16 PM
@InvaderSkoodge Er... read it again. =]

@GnomeSlice What?

@InvaderSkoodge It wasn't a yes or no question, hah.

I stand by what @InvaderSkoodge said.

@GnomeSlice I stand by my answer.
@OrigamiRobot WHY DO YOU ALWAYS DO THIS TO ME

@InvaderSkoodge I felt as though someone was calling me. I knew what I had to do.
We used to be the same robot. Nothing can come between that.

7:20 PM
@InvaderSkoodge Okay, whatever.

@GnomeSlice Tortoise gif about whooshing.

@InvaderSkoodge No, I get it. If we do delete them, then we're obviously going to be both closing and deleting them. I just don't feel like arguing for a straight answer.

That was a straight answer.

So we delete them.

And we close them.
But not in that order, generally.

7:22 PM
You're being difficult intentionally, and I don't appreciate it.

Hint: When someone answers "Yes" to a multiple choice question, it usually means the choices are not mutually exclusive.

I'm not being intentionally difficult at all.

@OrigamiRobot If we close them, we don't delete them. If we delete them, closing is irrelevant.
Fuck, whatever.

Er, yes, we do delete stuff we close.
That's kinda what closure does. Dupes aside, what is closed is either destined to be reopened or deleted.

Do we close them? Yes.
Do we delete them? Yes.
The end.

7:26 PM
@InvaderSkoodge @RonanForman, get on it.

@Wipqozn He wont even add a paper hat to the image of GIR riding a turtle.

@OrigamiRobot He's really gotten lazy these past months.

@OrigamiRobot Why is GIR riding a turtle?

In other news, ballitsomycetes suddenly gave me a revelation for something that'd been bugging me a while.

I'd have made that my gravatar if he had.

7:27 PM

@InvaderSkoodge I didn't want to say "riding @Wipqozn" because it would get starred.

@OrigamiRobot Didn't want to say what?

You can read.

@Wipqozn That @Wipqozn gets ridden hard.

@OrigamiRobot No I can't. Could you please type out the sentence in it's own message so I know?
@InvaderSkoodge It's true.
Oh, and don't include any context with the message.
(I'm so subtle)

@Wipqozn oh hey is that a picture of @OrigamiRobot riding @Wipqozn?

Apparently nesting a tag inside a link doesn't work.

@pixel I don't know I can't see it.

"I'd like to know if there are any free and open source alternatives to it because I also turned my back on paying (even kickstarters) for closed source, pay to play games."

@fbueckert closed!

7:35 PM
@OrigamiRobot The answer is "yes".

@AshleyNunn It also needs another downvote. :P

@fbueckert YOU ASK SO MUCH OF ME

@AshleyNunn Marshals require people to toe the line!

user15026
@fbueckert what if I don't wannnnna

@AshleyNunn I believe Marshals also have jail cells for those types of people.

user15026
7:37 PM
@fbueckert jail? reaaally? isnt that a little harsh?

Don't worry @AshleyNunn, I'll let you out.

@AshleyNunn Well, I could let you off with a warning.

user15026
@OrigamiRobot Shh, don't say that where he can hear!

Don't want to appear soft on the rest of you lawbreakers, though!

@fbueckert We can tell by the number of points on your badge

7:38 PM
@fbueckert THis sounds like the start of a porno.

@Wipqozn Speaking from experience, are you?

user15026
@fbueckert That would be nice. I would be appreciative.

user15026
@Wipqozn Why you gotta ruin things? :P

@fbueckert Well, I don't like to brag...
@AshleyNunn Because it's fun.

user15026
@Wipqozn Is there even a market for turtle porn?

@AshleyNunn Is there even a market for ______ porn? Yes.

@InvaderSkoodge This.

@Wipqozn Yes you do, you do it constantly.

user15026
@InvaderSkoodge This is why the internet scares me sometimes.

@RonanForman I'm just so good at it!

7:40 PM
@AshleyNunn The internet, where millions of opinions, thoughts, and content can be distilled down to, "Ew. That's gross."

user15026
@fbueckert This is true more often than I would like it to be.

@AshleyNunn and by "more often" you mean "100% of the time"?

user15026
@Wipqozn There are exceptions, like cute cat videos.

cute cats are gross

@OrigamiRobot ...I have no words for this.

Full circle!

7:56 PM
So are people VTC this because of "mod rec" issues? gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/95174/…

@bwarner Sure sounds like a question asking for a list.

So for those that upvoted the accepted answer on meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/5547/… what do you think of this question?

@badp: For reference, the Skyrim mod search url is steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/browse/…

Wasn't there a MSO post about when chat flags should be used?

@bwarner Do I need to point out the first part of what you said is a selection bias?

8:09 PM
@Powerlord I think it's fair, community consensus seems to be overwhelmnigly for "mod-rec is fine" and then the community goes ahead to close a mod-rec.

@badp Right, but saying "So for those that upvoted the accepted answer" is a clear selection bias

@Powerlord It's probably whipping them into putting their money into their mouth, or whatever that saying goes

I can invert it and say "I don't care what people who didn't upvote the selected answer have to say so don't bother replying."

ah, doesn't link now I've deleted the question
^_^

@pixel It does for people who have 20k+ rep. Or was that 10k+ rep? I forget.

8:12 PM
@Powerlord 10

@Powerlord 10k. At any rate, not you.

@badp harsh

@pixel Not really... my Gaming account had more than 10k rep before I had it deleted.

@Powerlord oh hello Mark

@pixel Too recent to be me.

8:13 PM
do you just hang out on the bridge because we're cool people then? :p

Go search for a question older than a year and you'll likely see a deleted used either in the answers or comments. That's me.

@Powerlord why on earth would I ever search for a TF2 question?

Hi, I'm user2974! Nice to meet you!

@Powerlord Well, clearly anyone that didn't support the "mod-rec is OK" opinion is going to be OK with it being closed. I was curious to hear someone defend it.

@pixel To get an approximation of the extent of the former epenis of Powerlord's.

8:15 PM
ok so next question, why would you delete your account?
@badp epenis is not a measurement I subscribe to, was he on the scale of Mr DOTA?
or not quite that bad...

@pixel Long story that I don't want to get into now.

@pixel No, nothing like him.

so, more of a gameaddict then? :D

Q: How do I get Skyrim to redownload Dawnguard and the other DLC if I accidentally deleted it from the data files menu?

Q: If you already have an Ingress account, is there any set point that you get invite codes to give to others?

DaenythDoes it happen at a certain level, some amount of time spent playing, or are they handed out ad-hoc?

@bwarner The closed question you linked to seems to be a clear example of a user facing a specific problem looking for a clear answer.
I believe it falls in line with the accepted meta answer from agent

8:18 PM
@tiddy So, if I had an account and linked the Skyrim mod search site to them, that'd be an OK answer?

A: How should we tag Assassin's Creed 3 Liberation?

FluttershyAlright, based on Oak's related meta post, and the popularity of the Assassin's Creed franchise, I'd like to propose the following solution: Keep assassins-creed Keep assassins-creed-2 Create a Master tag for ac-brotherhood, merging anything tagged assassins-creed-bh and synonymizing assassins-...

Because that's literally the answer to every question like that.
Skyrim isn't like WoW where you have to search every site for mods... Skyrim has exactly one mod site that's integrated into the game itself.

I'm seeing the answer to the skyrim question being a specific mod that solves the problem the user asked. Additionally there is a much larger site called the Skyrim Nexus that hosts thousands of mods

@badp @Oak or @agent86 I would appreciate your inputs! And anyone else for that matter... <_< It's just a bit of an undertaking for a mod.

@tiddy And that presents the fish versus teaching a person to fish argument that @badp already made in the other answer to the meta question.

8:22 PM
The one that wasn't accepted
with less votes?

@tiddy It was posted a week later.... yesterday, specifically.

Another thing that rubs me wrong about mod-rec questions is that they can fall into that realm where the answer is "No, it doesn't exist", but nobody answers that because how can you be 100% confident that there isn't some mod out there that you aren't aware of?
2

You seem content on purposefully making it harder for users to get answers to legit questions

@tiddy Yes, because ad hominem attacks are SO related to the topic.

Oh someone just reviewed the logical fallacies wiki

8:25 PM
@Powerlord My phone depressed me once by trying to correct hominem to Eminem :(

I already fought on the side of keeping and lets face it, game-rec lost.

He asked a specific question that had a real answer

You can create infinite mod-rec questions by just thinking of everything you dislike about a game and then asking for mods to change them.
2

@bwarner This is why I think is worse than .

The arguments against game-rec and the fact that the community rejected it does not mean the arguments suddenly go away for other "shopping rec" type categories.

8:26 PM
@bwarner I would like a mod to change my hair color to #00F356

@bwarner @spugsly pls

Mod-rec suffers from the same issues as game-rec. people voting on what they like better. There is no single right answer
3

@Fluttershy ...and questions soliciting lists of answers are a bane of the SE network and banned from most sites because of it.

@Fluttershy It's a very subjective topic

8:28 PM
Mod rec has additional terrible qualities on top of what made game rec bad, though.

@Powerlord Oh, I know! I wasn't like... disagreeing that they should banned. Because they should. >_>

@InvaderSkoodge Like what?

@Fluttershy I was building on what you said, not disagreeing with it.

Like @bwarner said, I could say. "I like Skryim, but it would really be better with more unicorns and rainbows. Is there a mod for that?"

I'M SORRY FOR AGREEING WITH YOU. NO I'M SORRY FOR AGREEING WITH YOU

8:29 PM
Search for mods on your own ugh.
@Gwen Read @bwarner's last 2 starred messages.

@Powerlord Oh. <_< Gotcha.

@Powerlord The ellipsis used like that triggers my sarcasm receptors, even when it's not intended.
Sarcasm didn't make sense there, though.
grabs pitchfork and torch When does the burnination commence?

@InvaderSkoodge Usually sarcastic ellipsis are at the end, not the beginning. Right?

@Powerlord Probably.

@Powerlord I put mine at the beginning, most of the time.

8:33 PM
@Powerlord ...All the time

@Fluttershy I'm sorry, I don't have a strong opinion either way :(

@GnomeSlice Same here
To indicate the skeptical look that precedes the sarcastic remark

@InvaderSkoodge OHOHOH What are we burninating?

@SaintWacko Yes, exactly.

I'm not sure it should be burninated

@InvaderSkoodge I think its Gwen.

8:38 PM
@InvaderSkoodge Isn't that already not allowed?

@InvaderSkoodge I'm me?

@bwarner OK, instead burninate a marshmallow and then eat it with the chocolate.

@OrigamiRobot @agent numbers is of the opinion that it should be allowed.

@Powerlord That sounds much more reasonable.

Mod rec has all the same problems as game rec, plus additional problems.

@InvaderSkoodge And so are at least 14 others apparently. Which is quite a few for meta.

Q: Closed 'mod recommendation' Skyrim question - Can this question be improved and then reopened?

galacticninjaThis question has been recently closed by a moderator for being a mod recommendation question (which I reckon, as an extension of the 'game recommendations questions are not allowed' policy): How do I add character requirements for factions or guilds? Title of the question when it was close...

@bwarner Too bad Mark Trapp isn't here to teach us about consensus again.

@InvaderSkoodge Maybe I misread his answer, but I got the impression he was saying asking for mods specifically is bad, but asking to solve a problem that happens to only be solvable by mods is fine.
Or maybe I made all that up.

It's the current credo
It's also a whole load of crap
Most of the time askers already know you need a mod to do something

Yea when I actually type it out I realize it's just an excuse to allow mod rec...

8:40 PM
You're changing "What do I install to make X possible?" to "How can I make X possible?" and then answering it with "Install this."

"Where are the invisible pink unicorns in Skyrim? I needs them."

@Wipqozn You know what I mean! User A posts mod X, User B posts mod Y. They do the same thing. Users C, D, and E prefer mod X, Users F, G, and H prefer mod Y. It's entirely too subjective to vote with any sort of authority.

It's tricky though. What about things I think a game is capable of, but in reality it's not?

"You can't."

I made my arguments on meta, I could reiterate them here again but if it didn't make sense to you there, it's unlikely to make sense to you here.

8:42 PM
@Fluttershy If it's a shitty question yes. Unlike Game-Rec not all mod-recs are like that. Mod-Recs which are about an actual problem are fine.
That's the difference.
Game-Recs can never be about an actual problem. It's impossible. Mod-Recs can.

@badp Right, but then people post mod answers. What then?

@agent86 I like how you've somehow managed to answer everybody's possible criticisms to your post before they were even expressed

@agent86 So do you think this question should be re-opened?

I didn't ask for mods. I thought it was something in the game.

@Wipqozn There is no difference! Take my scenario... "How can I get a pink shovel?" Oh, this mod does it. Oh so does this one. Vote on either! Voting doesn't matter here! <----- No.

8:44 PM
That's why voting on Game-Recs is broken. If there's no problem, how do you vote? With a Mod-Rec there is a problem, and voting correlates to what people think best solves the problem.

@badp I never said that - and I'm not shutting down discussion, just not going to have half the discussion in the comments of my answer, and half here in real time.

@Fluttershy Except how can I get a pink shovel is a stupid question and falls under "How do I do x?" and should be closed.

@agent86 I've posted a comment to your answer which has been ignored :P

@bwarner I'm not sure what value of "this" we're talking about.

@Wipqozn Is "I WANT PONIES IN TF2" a problem?

Q: Skyrim Mod: Equip a complete outfit

SiLeXIs there a mod available, where I can have multiple items (like 2 weapons, armor and clothing) bound to one slot? I'm actually trying to make outfits for different quests, because sometimes it's great to have the one abilities when the time I need the others. TIA

@Wipqozn So... "How can I get two separate sets of gear in Skyrim?" Try this mod! How is that different?

@badp oops, darn. I got a single ping for 3 or 4 comments there and missed yours.

@Fluttershy I didn't say it was. I've made no comment with regards to that question.

@Wipqozn THAT IS ALL OF MOD-REC

CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR TRUE
Oh... now I'm sad... :(
@Fluttershy and no, it's not.

8:47 PM
@bwarner yeah, that doesn't seem terrible to me. There was one the other day that was "how do I make this game more awesome... with MODS!" that was pretty bad before it was edited.

@Wipqozn Actually, there is only one most efficient configuration

We don't need an absolute rule for everything. We're intelligent beings capable of exercising judgement on a case by case basis.

"How do I craft arrows in Skyrim?" <- Since you can craft most things, it is a reasonable assumption that you'd be able to craft arrows. The answer is "You can't", but what if someone answers with a mod?

Personally, if this discussion manages to find "good" mod-recs from "bad" mod-recs I'd be perfectly happy with it

@Wipqozn Don't get too ahead of yourself there

8:48 PM
Someone was way too obsessed a while back and did a big study

We could then extend this distinction to "good" game-recs and "bad" game-recs

my way of phrasing what @Wipqozn said is "we don't need specific rules for most bad questions. bad questions are bad questions."

@OrigamiRobot You can

And get rid of this blanket rule

if it's vague, or it asks for a list, or there's no clear problem to solve, those are already close reasons.

8:48 PM
I'd just like to remind us all that we've been unable to find this distinction and the blanket rule is a result of this
See also: ITG

@tiddy Oh yea... In a recent patch or expansion or something. That doesn't change my point.

@badp Same here. I haven't posted an answer to that question because I'm still not sure what's a good mod-rec and a bad mod-rec. We just haven't spent enough time on the subject matter yet. Just needs more time to think and discuss it.
Because, for example, I think this is fine:

I can't put my finger on why though.

Yah, I don't see anything particularly wrong with that mod-rec. Except everything that I dislike about mod-rec in general. So I was mostly surprised that it was closed without any comments or upvotes (it now has 1), despite the recent show of support for mod-rec.

They could both be bad, or both be good.

It was 5 close votes/5 downvotes. 5 people tanked it
That's all

8:51 PM
In fact now that I've seen that second question I would have refrained from casting my vote on the first one until I could come up with a definite reason for why.

@badp your comment is ready, good sir

@tiddy So where are the others reopening?

my sincere apologies at its delay. I hope you were not inconvenienced overmuch

Would if I could

@agent86 He probably hates you now.

8:51 PM
@Wipqozn :(

@agent86 I think you miss a "don't"

@badp Exactly. There could be more close votes waiting, but we'll never know unless people step up with reopen votes.

@badp I accidentialy a don't. you are correct.

Either way, it seems like we at least owe the guy a comment on why his question was buried so quickly.
2

@OrigamiRobot Yes it does, it's to speculate or theorize about fundamental or serious issues, esp. in a tedious or pompous way.

8:52 PM
So are you guys against his question or how he phrased it

@bwarner Which question?

The Skyrim one

@tiddy We have hundreds of SKyrim questions.

The second one that wipq linked above.

Ah.

8:53 PM
@agent86 It is inconveniencing me because I forgot what you were replying to :P

@GnomeSlice Scroll up

I think questions explicitly asking for mods should be off topic, but if it's a question that happens to be only answerable using a mod, that's fine. As long as the question is something you would reasonably assume is in the actual game.

Yeah, mod-rec. But nobody left him any comments.

He asked if there is a way to set complete equip loadouts to a single key

@Wipqozn I see four different questions scrolling up.
Although, one of them is a meta.

I got it okay.
Someone should probably leave that guy a comment.

@GnomeSlice Then read some context. ffuuu, sorry. I'm grumpy.

So that is a question this site refuses to answer

@tiddy Yes.

Yes "reasonably" is subject to interpretation, but god forbid we have to use judgement instead of having hard and fast rules for every single thing.

8:55 PM
Someone still answered it though
With what appears to be exactly what he was looking for

@badp then you should stop posting comments when other people are about to post long comments, duh

@tiddy That's fine, but it doesn't make it a good fit for the site. I personally don't see the harm in allowing localized questions like this on the site, but the community doesn't like them in general.

Community being bridge regulars

user15026
@GnomeSlice why would we allow localized stuff?

@GnomeSlice But the community clearly voted for allowing them on meta?

user15026
8:56 PM
@tiddy Who, funnily enough, are also site regulars....

The thing about "using your judgement" is you're going to start having rounds of questions that get closed and reopened, possibly more than once... since people disagree about it.

@agent86 which is why I'd deleted mine, after believing for a moment it was the wrong question. Luckily it wasn't, and you replied to it anyway

@Powerlord So? That's what the system is designed for.

@Powerlord Well here and now we have two cases where there is consensus

@AshleyNunn I don't know, why not?
@Gwen What? No, they're not allowed.

8:57 PM
Neither of those has had close-reopen wars

galacticninjaThis question has been recently closed by a moderator for being a mod recommendation question (which I reckon, as an extension of the 'game recommendations questions are not allowed' policy): How do I add character requirements for factions or guilds? Title of the question when it was close...

@GnomeSlice You really need to stop misunderstanding too localized.

@bwarner Huh. What do you know. Ignore me then. Also I should probably delete my comment.

@Powerlord Yah, that's my concern. It doesn't bother me all that much, but new users are freaked out by it.

@Wipqozn Someone asks a very specific question that nobody but the asker is likely to care about?

user15026
8:58 PM
@GnomeSlice "This question is unlikely to help any future visitors; it is only relevant to a small geographic area, a specific moment in time, or an extraordinarily narrow situation that is not generally applicable to the worldwide audience of the internet"

@Wipqozn I think he is referring to the fact that it might be something only the asker wants to do.

@OrigamiRobot Oh, okay. That's still wrong, but I can see how he made that jump.

@AshleyNunn Yes, that explains what 'too localized' is, but not how it negatively effects the site.

user15026
@GnomeSlice ...what.

user15026
just....what.

8:59 PM
@AshleyNunn What do you mean what?
So what if the asker is the only one who cares about it?

user15026
@GnomeSlice I mean what.

What metric do we use to measure "negativity"

@Wipqozn "an extraordinarily narrow situation" One person is pretty narrow.

@GnomeSlice either shes stunned from your critical hit, or she's asking you to elaborate

@tiddy millignomes
@pixel I did already.
