What Jefferson meant in his letter is much talked about, but the concept of the separation of Church and State is much larger than any one man or one country. The church and the state are often at odds, but they also work in conjunction.

This month on Eschewmenical we are back to our monthly topic series where we get authors from a variety of different positions to chime in on all kinds of topics.

This month’s topic is relevant with the election going on in the United States this week and at least some of the focus will be on issues the church takes very seriously. …

Let me start by apologizing to readers who are not interested in US politics—it’s the only politics I know. It’s also, I think, a somewhat unique system that has loads of interesting implications for Christians. As we rush to the finish line of the 2012 US Presidential election, you might want to know that I’m a registered Democrat who usually votes for Republican Presidential candidates. I’m also a perfect swing voter according to USA Today. Right at this moment (and I could very well change my mind by the end of this essay) I’m probably going to vote for Obama because I hate the title of Ronmey’s book. …

Two in a row?

@TRiG the Intro was late...

@TRiG Intro and the first real post. I think Jon wanted to get his post published before Election Tuesday.

I wrote it and posted it so I could get Jon's up before the election

9:25 PM
@El'endiaStarman Course, I could have worked harder to finish it last week...
Thanks.

@JonEricson I rather like it, actually.

@JonEricson it was ready on Sunday when it was supposed to go up, so it's my fault for not having the intro ready :O

@TRiG I hope to ruffle some feathers. I'm glad you enjoyed it. (I'm not sure how to link those two sentences. ;-)

@JonEricson Your parenthetical amuses me.

@TRiG Out of curiosity, how much have you been following the campaigns?

9:36 PM
@El'endiaStarman Vaguely.
The only political blog I follow these days is Slacktivist.
Then there's that Libertarian on my Fb friends list.
Actually that's not true. I also read Box Turtle Bulletin, which has a couple of liberal writers and one conservative writer who hates Romney.
Timothy Kincaid's take on the issues: Voting your pocketbook and The case for Romney.

> Despite the prevalence of the word “God” in our nation’s founding texts, we are not a Christian country. We never have been. Please don’t think that our goal should be to put the right people in office or to enforce correct theology via government action. On the other hand, don’t sacrifice your belief for the sake of pragmatism. Politics is about turning the collective convictions of a community into its public policy.

@waxeagle I really liked that part. It was cool to see another person say that we're not a Christian nation because I said that myself several weeks ago.

@JonEricson I've really come around to this in the past few years.
@El'endiaStarman it's a rather insidious piece of revisionist history my Christian high school education tried to insert. It's right wing propoganda
thankfully our history professors in college had no such delusions and were honest about the founding fathers.

9:51 PM
@waxeagle Probably should have put "right people" in scare quotes or explained a bit more. What I mean is that I don't care if Romney is Mormon or Obama is... whatever people think he is. I want to vote for the guy who will best serve the nation in the office for the next four years. (Or gal...)

@JonEricson yes. agreed on that. Though I find the conservative right's embrace of Romney to be odd. The fact that Obama is the only evangelical in the race is also intriguing.

@JonEricson To add to that (and to what wax just said), I have found it odd that my Christian friends endorse Romney for reasons which include Romney being a Christian. I have supposed that they don't know that Mormons are non-Chalcedonian, meaning that they deny the divinity of Jesus.

@El'endiaStarman hey, but Billy Graham says they aren't a cult :)

@El'endiaStarman That's not on the Conservative Christian checklist...

@waxeagle I wouldn't really say Mormons are a cult either, largely because of their size.

9:55 PM
@El'endiaStarman Cult is a word with many different meanings, one of which is "a religion I dislike".

@El'endiaStarman I can agree with that reasoning. But the timing of the change of classification is rather...convenient?

@waxeagle Quite. I've seen that observation raised.

@TRiG Ugh. I guess I'm part of a cult then. (Some days.)

@TRiG There you go. One of those words that mean what is convenient to you.

@JonEricson Well, it's yet another word to avoid.
