12:40 AM
@MichaelMrozek so don't we have to reapply to our station soon?

@xenoterracide The election starts Monday

@MichaelMrozek no meta post about it before hand?

Not generally. There'll be a system message when it starts

ah
I thought maybe there was more role call for people who wanted it?
or is it only to re-elect us?

No, everyone can run (well, there's some minimal rep requirement, but almost everyone). The nominations are a week long, so I guess they figure that's enough time for people to think about it

12:47 AM
oh, so it allows for nominations starting next week
ok
I wasn't sure how that worked

There's a week of nominations, 4 days for the primary, and 3 days for the election. (You can read about the different phases in the SO election)
We probably won't have enough people to bother with a primary, and we might not even have the election if there's few enough nominations

how many can get elected?
3?

I think so

you decide whether you're running yet?

No, I wasn't really thinking about it. Probably. I assume Miguel isn't, and Maciej seems unlikely; it'll be interesting to see how many nominations we end up having

12:53 AM
right

Gilles was thinking about it I think

I'll vote for @Gilles

Probably everyone would. And I think he could moderate the site single-handedly, but he'll have to put up with two of us anyway

right
I wonder if @steven d has any interest... he's the only other person with a higher rep than me
(that hasn't been mentioned)
@MichaelMrozek thanks for then info, you always know more about these things than me... though I don't know why

@xenoterracide I'm on MSO a lot, and I ran in the SO election, so I cared a lot how they work :)

1:01 AM
ah
I don't hang out on MSO at all
unless I have something I really care 'bout
did you see that question the other day where the guy was asking about making a popup in both kde and gnome? what'd you think of that?

I thought it was fine, but it got pushed to SO later. I guess because it was in C

ah
yeah I thought about pushing it to SO
but I didn't

I think Maciej did. It probably made more sense there; I thought it was asking about a shell script at first

yeah
well I saw that it said his program was written in C
but I didn't ask how he wanted to implement it
for all I knew he wanted to wrap the C program in shell

Q: Linux, GNU GCC, ld, version scripts and the ELF binary format -- How does it work??

themoondothshineHey all, I'm trying to learn more about library versioning in Linux and how to put it all to work. Here's the context: -- I have two versions of a dynamic library which expose the same set of interfaces, say libsome1.so and libsome2.so. -- An application is linked against libsome1.so. -- This...

that's kinda odd
well I guess people like it
so I'll leave it alone
but it might be kinda SO-ish

I remember that. It's about linking, but I think it's all Linux-specific linker stuff. I think -- I don't totally understand it, it's kind of complicated

1:25 AM
yeah me iether
either*
but even being linux / gcc specific... it might do better on SO... I'll suggest
I'm out for now

Q: Remapping caps-lock to escape, and menu to compose, on the linux console

intuitedWhen running X I use a .xmodmaprc to remap certain keys thusly: clear Lock keysym Caps_Lock = Escape ! Remap the menu key as Compose keysym Menu = Multi_key How can I accomplish the same things on the console?

2:17 PM
@xenoterracide My general guideline is that if it's a topic that non-developers might be familiar with, it's ok here
Questions about linking come up when compiling software from source, which is a user/admin activity, so I don't consider this question off-topic
@MichaelMrozek I'd only run for mod if I'd plan to vote for myself
If the present mods run again, that won't be the case
To quote a phrase that seems popular on SE: what problem would my being a mod solve?

@Gilles I decided I'd only run for mod (on Gaming) if somebody who I'd rather not see with a diamond did

Q: `man ascii` is misaligned when using vim as a pager

phuneheheTo use Vim as a pager for man I have export MANPAGER="/usr/share/vim/vim73/macros/manpager.sh" in my profile. Now man pages look very good with colors and stuff. However, when trying man ascii as a way of looking at the ASCII table, I notice that the table is mis-aligned as in the screenshot b...

Q: CCD cam to USB - AV grabber for linux

JohnRoachHi I was wondering if there is a AV Grabber that supports Linux. I have IC-348 model I.C.U (international camera unit) made in P.R.C camera that uses a Sony CCD 420TVL. I want to grab the video output and use it in a program that I am writing. The thing is that I couldn't find a good CCD Cam to U...

Q: can ping, can't connect by IP - resetting the network fixes it briefly, then it breaks again

user4908I've got one server (CentOS 5), out of a half dozen, that the network flakes out on. When it's 'dead', I can still ping other servers by IP, but if I try to make any kind of connection also using an IP (ssh, telnet on 53 to test DNS) it just hangs and does nothing. Running /etc/init.d/network ...
