@Wil what a terrible blog post. It reads as a "me too, me too!" "Back in my day..." and "Well, since you didn't ask let me tell you, sonny." All at the same time.

Wil
@Tyler ... I couldn't agree more, I know it isn't "that" bad, but I just felt strongly that I had to write about a few of the points. I am not the best blogger/good at grammar, but hopefully I get the point across. It will be ready in (hopefully) under 5 minutes, please stay online!

You should just send them a box of tissues and some chocolates. It's pure linkbait.

... Almost feels as long as their original blog... sorry... but I hope you like - blog.williamhilsum.com/2011/02/…

You deserve some waffles for breakfast @Wil

Wil
Please let me know what you think or if anything should be changed... about to tweet it @ a few of the SO people.

@Wil Nice, I like it.
@IvoFlipse can you delete this tag?

no idea how

We have quite a few years unitl we are ready for that tag...

12:42 AM
I try to stay away from tags really

Wil
@Kyle there are 0 questions tagged with it? :S
@Kyle thanks

I retagged the only one

@Wil: I don't know if it's just me... But tags don't seem to go out of the system by themself.

I figured there was some way of getting rid of them...

Go to Tags, then go to the last pages, there are really a bunch of tags there that are too much, but well, I don't care much...
They do show up in the suggestion list though, if I'm not wrong.

Wil
12:45 AM
Going to tweet the blog post now... its honestly how/what I feel about this site and question sites in general... just hope it doesn't blow back in my face!

Good luck, @Wil. :-)

Wil
... after all the effort, most likely only a handful of people will read it! The only page I have made which is really popular is the one about Apple SSL problem, I have had so many hits that just come in through Google to it! (so I am not the only one!)

Q: Is there any product to prevent a broken screen's pieces from falling from it?

Eduardo LeónI just had an accident and broke my MacBook's screen. It still works (there are no "dead" pixels), but I'm worried that some of the broken pieces might fall from the screen. Is there any product could I use to prevent that from happening?

3 upvotes and an accept...

:S ... lol

Are questions about/for excel formulas on-topic for SU?

Wil
yep

Cool. Of course, I suppose I should search/JFGI this one first...

@Iszi What's the question?

2:01 AM
Okay, I think I actually found the solution.
Or, at least part of it.
@Tyler How to set up Data Validation for IP Addresses.

yeesh

I found what looks to be a valid formula, but I don't understand all the functions involved and (although it's probably not a huge issue) it doesn't appear to account for negative integers.

2:30 AM
nice blog post @Wil

Wil
@nhinkle Thanks!

@Sathya Howdy
Sorry, I was busy configuring a new router for the home network.
Hopefully, I've gotten it down to just:
1.) Take network offline.
2.) Reconfigure existing gateway.
2a.) Disable WiFi
2b.) Set LAN to DHCP one /30 network, including only the old & new routers.
3.) Put new router between existing gateway and remainder of network.
4.) Configure new printer IP on client devices.
Oh, and of course...
5.) Bring clients back online.
All this so that, when the new ISP comes, all I have to do is:
1.) Plug new (pre-configured) router into new modem.
2.) Reboot or release/renew clients.

Morning. I'll just leave this here:

Expert Exchange gets narky after snub from Q/A site review

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2224305
AH, I see Wil beat me to it.

@Linker3000 Expert who?
Oh, right... that annoying site that's always top in the search results, and requires you to sign up to see the information you're looking for.

Dunno. I seem to recall helping them out until they wanted money from me ;-)

@Linker3000 I just try to ignore sites that have compulsory registration for viewing community-generated content.

6:26 AM
Hi @Iszi & @Linker3000

Morning.
I woke at 5.30 with a tickly cough and that was me up for they day!

@Linker3000 :)

6:49 AM
Ah well, time to REALLY get up now! See you when I'm at work - about 0845 UTC

see you soon @Linker3000

Got to work early today - traffic was kind!

@Wil got a visitor ;)

Even more snarky, har har!
> It's impressive to me that when the great minds behind Experts Exchange make their voice known, they talk just like the kind of slimeballs you would expect behind such an operation.
It's shameless. In their shoes, I'd just sit there quietly, take the snub on the chin, keep plying my spammy trade, and have enough introspection to realize that the reason no one wants to talk to me is because I've created one of the shittiest, most user-hostile content abominations in the history of the entire internet.
Got to love Hackernews

hi @DMA57361

9:29 AM
morning @IvoFlipse, @Sathya, @Linker3000 @rzlines
or evening, depending on where you are :P

hi @IvoFlipse @studiohack @DMA57361
did you read EE's reply ? @IvoFlipse @studiohack @DMA57361

EE? @Sathya

that hyphenated site

@Sathya on the link you posted in the TL? yeah, a skim read

@DMA57361 EE dude has posted a reply

9:33 AM
yeah, that's what I mean. I haven't seen what Wil's replying to thou...

what is the hyphenated site? @Sathya

oh wait
he links it at the first line - didn't see that because of a lack of space under the title

off course @Sathya :P

faceplam

@studiohack the site which shall not be named :P

9:35 AM
okay...... lol @Sathya

Q: Is there a browser addon to filter Google search results ?

SathyaIs there a way to block specific sites from appearing in Google search ? I'm looking for a browser addon ( preferably Google Chrome) - I don't want to create custom search engines or what-not

check the screenshot on the answer :P

what the?!
closed unamed hyphenated site as dupe of SE by studiohack
is some of SU's content ending up on that site?

nope

still haven't found EE?

and they're not as bad as everyone says
I actually found a couple of answers there
but I like how they get bashed :P

9:39 AM
lol @IvoFlipse

tbh the only reason they got bashed is for their cloaking
(IMO)

it is a paid solution thing, that enough makes me wary.

if you want it paid, fine by me. Just don't show on SERP

that's funny @IvoFlipse - SE has a very similar model to EE

9:57 AM
I wondered why EE wasn't on that comparison article.
it's all over Reddit and HN now.
"EE is successful -- and the fanboys hate that" and SE isn't?!

@tombull89 it's just that they're trying to limit the attention SE's been getting

true dat @Sathya

10:09 AM
but by posting that blog and drawing attention to themselves they draw more attention to SE. We'll have to see how this plays out.

I wouldn't worry about it
given who the VCs are that support SE

VC's are the companies who proivide funding/capital to SE?

yes
though I can't believe it's their only revenue stream
I mean how much can you do with 6M?

wow. thought it was considerable more than that. $/£ ?

10:26 AM
go @Wil!!

put that on MSO chat

do it @Sathya

technically he's right, if the VC money runs out, we would need a revenue model too
but I think the job ad board should be able to generate more revenue in time
as would better ads
but compared to Quora, I think SE could just raise more money to stretch that moment

And the difference is as well that the content of all SE sites is CC licensed, meaning that someone could just take one of the torrent dumps and set up a free mirror if the site displeases us

more ads I wouldn't mind (as long as they are related, cough*evony*cough) but if SE ever went to subscription then I'd be gone.

10:34 AM
indeed
though I wouldn't mind paying for using Stack Exchange (I would if I had to very every separate site), though that might depend on the price

I would mind!

but I wouldn't want a subscription @studiohack, more like donations as Wikipedia has them

the best things in life are free, IMO
meh.

yeah, well computers, personnel and bandwidth arent :P
2

TANSTAAFL....

10:36 AM
Amen @Mokubai

if all SE sites had relevant adverts on them then I don't see why the sites couldn't pay for themselves

doesn't hanging out here make you feel old @Mokubai

@studiohack exatly. I'd be happy to donate a bit like I have done for other foums and sites (as long as there's no sad looking, puppy-eyes jeff atwood banner along the top asking for donations, wikipedia style)

@IvoFlipse Uhhh, not overly, should it?

well if other blogs can generate revenue that way, surely SE could too
hehe, I just find it hilarious how you bring up all these awesome 'old school' stuff :P

10:37 AM
They could go back to charging for some SE sites (eg if you want a private one for a large corporation)

that too

I like a lot of the older sci-fi authors... Robert Heinlein is a great author and his "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" has TANSTAAFL all the way through it.

actually I think I heard some large banks are already using it, we just don't hear about it

@MatthewSteeples I think they do that already

10:38 AM
but only for companies to use internally
saw mention of it on MSO I'm sure

I didn't know we had a sci-fi SE site
Bookmarked

voila, problem solved @Mokubai ;)

done
@IvoFlipse there's a MSO question on that

Q: What is Stack Overflow's business model?

George StockerI once answered a question that asked how Stack Overflow makes money, but that was before the time of VC. Now, Stack Overflow has cash, and they have an ever-growing list of employees, but where's the business model? The Experts-Exchange team took the time to answer its own Q&A about its si...

we should put your HN link in the comments there

you just did @IvoFlipse

10:46 AM
I know, I couldn't resist it

@IvoFlipse I feel old now that you brought it up though... you young whippersnappers running around with your ip-Ods....

I have i-OCD ;P

Oh dear lord I'm the oldest in here at the moment, you're all 25-26....

the fact that I know what you're talking about makes me feel old @Mokubai, like floppy drive old

21 here ^_^

10:50 AM
@Mokubai lol, yup 26 here - but married with a 4 yr old, so I feel older :P

Ah, managed to dodge the child thing so far, but am happily married :)

yet still in university ;P

Nowt wrong with that
I would be if I had the ca$h

for the second time even :P

I managed to dodge both, but I'm probably just as locked in as you two

10:52 AM

Full of tact your uncle was it seems ;)

10:54 AM
If you have to come and watch "A farmer is looking for a wife" on Sunday evening and have to massage her, I don't think he was far off ;P
but I guess it's a trade off, so I'm not complaining (too much)

I'm not sure I want to put "A farmer is looking for a wife" into google...
But I don't quite get the reference...

It's a TV program: Boer zoekt vrouw (which roughly translates to a farmer is looking for a wife)

Is it one of those generic reality tv dating shows? We had generic posh country bloke looking for wife a few years ago. Reality tv is one of the many reasons I don't watch TV anymore.

speaking about tv - who loves Top Gear ?
Not the blech American /Ozzie version ?

Wil
11:09 AM
@Sathya Cool! thanks guys!

It is @Mokubai, but it's made by a public channel, which gives it a 'different' attitude, but still wrong in all ways :P
I do @Sathya, but it's often broadcasted during other programs... :P

@IvoFlipse you watch on TV? Naaan-sense.

@Sathya Everyone loves Top Gear!

where else?
I can download them, like I do with the rest off course

we don't get it here, so the usual source it is
I have to catch up with S16 E2 & 3
<3 their specials
bloody awesome

11:12 AM
Yeah, the specials are the absolute best
Botswana was a great one

yeah - actually all of 'em are brilliant

12:01 PM
Every week I say to myself "I must watch Top Gear this week" and every week I forget :(

lol

man, they should just figure the licensing stuff out, so everyone can get Hulu/Netflix and the like

yeah, you can't watch hulu outside the us
i hate that

@IvoFlipse you can also watch it @ streetfire.net
meh
US folks have Pandora / Last.fm
UK/EU have Last.fm/spotify
and we're beggars

great that made my browser crash @Sathya :P

12:05 PM
lol

Oh, @IvoFlipse did you finally nail the problem with your new computer crashing?

btw I'm liking wxpython more and more
yeah, don't overclock @Mokubai :P

Is it that good? I'm liking pyQt less and less :)

so actually no, but I don't have the resources and the need to fix it now
it has been stable for 2 weeks

Wil
@Sathya I signed up to that site... how do I upvote you/the comment? I don't see how to add points :S

12:07 PM
@Wil click on the up arrow next to the link

@Mokubai it let's me add debug options, so I can let it spawn a dedicated shell for changing things about the app

Wil
I can't see one :S

add a toolbar? just type the code and it updates it

you might've upvoted it ?
btw, it's at +16 ? thought it'd get drowned out

Fair enough, read that you had a book, it electronic by any chance?

12:09 PM
buckle up on that webserver @Wil :P

Wil
@Sathya ahh - I clicked the arrow and it asked me to sign in/create an account... I guess it remembered the action after signing up

@Wil yes

Wil
@Sathya haha, it's hosted on Google Blogspot!! :)

@Wil sweet.
also, it's #4 ? :-s

@Mokubai "You've got mail!"

Wil
12:12 PM
@Sathya How did you advertise that page / how is it getting hits!? Just from here?

@Wil from here, meta.
it goes to /newest
and bubbles up.. I don't know what algorithm they use.

Wil
/newest? well, thanks!

@Wil :) actually tbh the reply from <whoever> was what pissed me off. And I couldn't login to comments ( webnonsense) so decided to send it to HN

Wil
on my blog, I have annonymous comments! You should of been able to!

the comments box is not showing up @Wil

Wil
12:19 PM
not even at the bottom of the page? :S sorry, no idea what is wrong

It's OK for me (Win 7, 32Bit, IE8)

it's something over at my office firewall @Wil don't sweat it

Wil
All I can suggest - go to incognito and see if it loads (can still post as anonymous) as it may be a addon... apart from that - yeah, firewall I guess!

Wil
12:25 PM
I better get on with some work, I will check later - many thanks...

later @Wil

@Sathya You should check the comments of the extension itself: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/…

@IvoFlipse Many thanks :)
Looks like a lot of nice books in there

indeed @Mokubai, I have plenty more, but I thought about reading these first myself
@Wil's blog is exploding :)

what's the link again?
nm, following HN link
nice :)

Wil
12:42 PM
@Mokubai (distraction...) Top Gear is fun but annoying (UK Version at least), I love it, watch it etc, but you can't believe a thing on tv... A race... they just happen to have a full camera crew in position at every turn! So staged!

@Wil Apparently each "race" is filmed twice. Once for the race itself and then they film clips from stationary camera points etc

@Wil Yeah, it's massively staged and choreographed, and some of the races obviously let the underdog win, but it makes great TV.

Wil
@MatthewSteeples Agree, which is why I like it.... I just remember when my brother did something for the Disney channel, they recorded all day long (but hey, Mickey bought us lunch at a nice place!) for a 2 minute clip!!!

The "car darts" was a sport that anyone could enjoy...

@Mokubai Dropbox tells me I get 250 MB if you install Dropbox :P

12:47 PM
@IvoFlipse Awesome, a book on SQLite!

yeah, at least you'll understand the syntax now :P

I may well do that then @IvoFlipse, just to nick all your books :)

nick? the only way to 'loose' them is if I delete the folder ;P

It'll have to wait until this evening tho, work frown on that kind of thing...

it's np, there's no rush
you can read the books from the browser anyway :)

12:53 PM
One thing I like about the possibility of using SQLite is that it potentially makes moving to a full SQL database a bit easier as all your queries are already done...

@Mokubai Microsoft's answer to SQLite (SQL Compact) has been revamped: weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/06/30/…

@MatthewSteeples Cool, I'll bookmark that for when I (maybe) try to do some programming in C#. Thank you :)
Urgh, I need to reorganise all my bookmarks soon :(
Too many "Oh, that'll be useful *bookmark*" situations.

@IvoFlipse, @DMA57361, @Sathya: Can somone merge:

indeed

1:02 PM
Google should index my bookmarks, so I can easily search though them

@IvoFlipse: There was a SU question for that.

I probably asked it :P Turns out I did not

@IvoFlipse can you tell the dropbox app to sync folders to different places on your hard drive? so one DB folder to e:\somefolder and another to f:\someotherfolder?

no, I think you can only create on Dropbox folder, unless you feel comfortable to create symbolic links :\
perhaps you can ask it on Super User, because I'm sure people would love it
then we can tweet it to @Dropbox ;P

lol

1:11 PM
@studiohack: Dunno how, but I seem to have misclicked and I still saw the question show up there. But Ivo Flispe took care... :D

As you say, looks like it is one folder only:

Q: Dropbox files in another location to norm

Niall CollinsI use dropbox and very happy with it. The only drawback I have with it is that I must place the files I want to share in the My Dropbox folder. Is there anyway I can place the files in another folder on my PC and automatically sync between dropbox folder and another folder on my local pc?

I've got numerous directory junctions in mine Dropbox - they work well

yes, but you probably don't need to have all your files within Dropbox to let them sync

how did @IvoFlipse take care of it, @TomWij?

I thought it was such a pain to set it up properly @DMA57361 that I simply gave up
considering to get the 50Gb version though

@IvoFlipse kill dropbox, move folder to desired location, create symlink to new location, start dropbox
or, if it's a new folder, just create folder in desired location, then symlink

I meant the symlink part :P

I was going to the new questions list to select the newest one, but I clicked the wrong one, then voted to close by a link I copied from here (the oldest) one. :D

@IvoFlipse mklink /D "C:\Users\whatever\Dropbox\FolderA" "D:\Where\you\put\it\FolderA"

so the close vote ended up on a random question that looked similar >_<

1:15 PM
let me guess in cmd? :P

it's even in the possible duplicates (if you use my extension)

lol @TomWij, its all good :)

:D

@IvoFlipse well yes, good point, but still it's quite a simple operation overall

for now I'll just maintain my newbish file management @DMA57361 ;)

1:16 PM
@IvoFlipse hehe, well, if it works for you...

all I need is a better desktop search

I like the Win7 desktop search @IvoFlipse - works for me

I use that too, but I haven't let it index everything
I used to use Ava Find
which was blazingly fast

yeah

drops a link...

1:19 PM
what does it cost @TomWij?

free for personal use

@IvoFlipse you might have another 250MB, I decided that dropbox might help stuff anyway :)

no, only up to 1000 files

@studiohack: Well, you start out free up to a limit.
But yeah, it's not free...

yes I have @Mokubai :) thank you very much

1:20 PM
Wow, all your books are downloading

:) @Mokubai @IvoFlipse lol

use the shell extension @IvoFlipse @Mokubai
2
A: Dropbox files in another location to norm

SathyaIt is possible, but it requires that you have a filesystem in NTFS format. You'll need an external tool, Link Shell Extension to make links and drop it as junctions. So the steps are: Install Link Shell Extension Browse to any folder you’d like to link with My Dropbox. Right click on the folde...

I actually reflected it myself the first time, but that was unnecessary as mentioning it on Super User got me a free license.

nice @TomWij
I don't like trials though

hate trials like crazy @IvoFlipse

1:21 PM
yeah, me too

Check the link :P

I tried the "register expert" link, you need 10k for premium stuff and if you don't watch where you click you end up on the credit card page again, even if you press the back button of your browser... :D

I don't even want to try EE. I'm happy at Super User :)

And the navigation... It's far from the SE experience! :)

1:25 PM
@TomWij (Said before, but will reiterate.) I think it's crappy that they make you register at all, to view community-generated content.
4

so true @Iszi

Just tried my old EE login - still works - can I transfer my points to SU? What's the exchange rate? Maybe I should ask them?!

:D

> I would rather watch "Congratulations You Won " ad on SO and get the answer than register in EE
:P
@Linker3000 you should ask that in HN / @Wil's post :p

The thing is with Java and .NET (Tabbles is written in F#) is that if you don't go for good obfuscation then it's pretty easy to see, call and modify the code as you can just read the source code or an intermediate transformed version of it. So basically, whenever they would release a new version I just call their serial functions again and immediately get a serial that I can fill in...
Their system does invalidate a keygen that works for a previous version as they insert checks incrementally, but it doesn't help if they don't obfuscate their code (I suggested, I hope they will do).
It's basically like, they give you a key AABBCC-DDEEFF-GGHHII-JJKKLL-MMNNOO or something like that. And first time only the first part is checked, second time some more is checked, and so on...
So if you write something that gets DDEEFF right and generate a key AABBCC-DDEEFF then it does work for the current version, but next version they suddenly check for GGHHII or something like that, keygen broken, quite nice...
And you even can take it that far like checked if MM comforms to AA DD, etc...
But well, now I have an official key too but haven't fully used the program yet, my data was so disorganized to easily tag various things. :D

1:37 PM
lol

Wil
1:48 PM
@Iszi You can always type the URL in to Google then scroll to the bottom, but I still stand by - why should you have to!

Q: Hotel like Wifi manager

flpgdtDoes anyone knows which are these systems that manages paid wifi networks and some hotels and airports? Even better, would anyone know a open/free project that would do or could be adapted to that end? The idea is simple, I want to let the network open at physical level so anyone can connect. A...

i really like this question and it's dupes...

@studiohack: I answered one like that about 2 weeks ago.

Wil
@IvoFlipse What happened in MSO Chat?

Nyuszika was being annoying

Wil
just saw your comment, was it EE related then, or something else...

Wil
Haven't seen that for years... still makes me laugh! I wonder why EE dumped the link instead of just forward :S

to provide some context, s/he was listing the domains listed in the ^^ + some others @Wil

Wil
@Sathya ahh, ok, thanks!

anyone here has any experience with Eclipse?

not much

2:05 PM
I love how it autocompletes, but now everytime I have to press end or [-->] to get to the end of the line
quite annoying really, so I'm guessing I'm missing some other hotkey/shortcut

tab ?

hmm I could try that

@IvoFlipse What button are you using to accept the autocomplete?

Enter I believe
or just typing along :P

Visual Studio accepts tab, space and enter and they sometimes do different things regarding character position
So not sure if Eclipse will be similar

2:08 PM
hmm in the preferences I'm reading something like Ctrl or Shift + Enter to modify the behavior
but it's not exactly what I want
ah well, guess I'll have to ignore the muscle memory

you should be able to change it, no ?
anyhow, off to home, will drop by later

why do you need to get to the end of the line each time?
shift+enter will get you a newline and leave the rest of the current line intact...

ah that's what I want :)
thank you @Mokubai!

No worries :)
If my highest scoring answer is anything to go by, I am the Hotkey Man ;)

and (while we're on keyboard shortcuts) ctrl + enter should give you a new line above the line you're currently on and move on to that (again leaving the current line intact)

2:23 PM
oooh, didn't know that one, useful for coding backwards :)
