@Shog9 It's growing. Slowly.
I think it's the quality of the jokes. They're so good here, people feel intimidated.
Either that, or us mods are so awesome there are no complaints of any kind.

12:03 PM
@Ninefingers I think we should move the Assembly to chat.so... There's too much blue in here...

@YannisRizos Or just not have network wide mods. Plenty of times I go into a chatroom, e.g. maths, and I get "hello dear modrator overlord sir what did we do wrong". NOTHING! I'm just an ordinary user on your site, matey!
I was also challenged to a duel
But not seriously.
maybe meta would be a better place for it? I think there was an equivalent there.

I know the feeling...
on the other hand the Assembly is a bit useless, I'd prefer to discuss moderation issues on ProgSE's chat room.

@YannisRizos True. We don't even have a private moderator room on crypto - really no need. But if our site had problems, we could easily sort it out there. That said, this room does serve a purpose... for cross site stuff that doesn't need to be in TL.

What cross site stuff? How long back in the transcript do I have to go? ;P
from non mods I mean...

@YannisRizos Jokes. Oh wait seriously? Well, migrations.
And if we ever have a repocalypse again, it might help.

But non mods is a really good reason to have this room. Some non mods do amazing stuff.

@Ninefingers I know, all of us blues were awesome non mods once... ;P

@YannisRizos Yeah. I looked really good in black, I think.

Whoever suggested I sign up to coursera's crypto course, I've signed up for the second go through, as my uni course will be finished soon :)
I think it was @jcolebrand, but I can't be sure.

2 hours later…
3:52 PM
Hey guys, another user and I were victims to a flag happy user on the chat
my comment was directed to user A, who understood it as a joke :P somehow another user flagged me AND him on it? (his was a response to my message with only a sad face) now we are both banned.
@mmyers ? you're the closes SO mod from the left of the users list
@balpha maybe you can help me.
at the very least, the other user should not have been banned for saying ":("

he wasn't

he is banned. i just dont understand how him and I joking was offensive to anyone else.

you said "you touch yourself at night", he answered "no, my gf does though. does that count?"

ok, but still.
we're not using bad language, and we're not saying anything offensive (can be argued)

I absolutely agree that that conversation is not appropriate
I'll unsuspend the two of you
but please keep it PG 13

3:59 PM
thank you

np :)

and I agree it probably wasn't the most appropriate, albeit not offensive, post.

3 hours later…
I didn't realize anonymous users could post images at all

user2334
Max 2 IIRC

warren voted to approve. facepalm

7:23 PM
Kinda tempted to ask for a [meta-tag:status-completed] on this now that Programmers is no longer an SO migration path

7:50 PM
Wow, they just went and did that with no arguments? I was under the impression they planned to secretly never change the SO migration list no matter what

@MichaelMrozek did they even ask the folks at dba and tex whether they wanted to be SO's toilet bowl?

If you put an ex-Programmers mod in charge of SO's migration paths, things happen

DBA seems to mostly like the posts they get. TeX less so

I still can't get past TeX's name. I know how it's pronounced, but it always makes me think of

user2334
@Gilles I think SO would be more pissed about DBA being a migration path than the reverse. Predict an increase in "Why did my SQL question get migrated it's perfectly on-topic for SO" MSO questions.

user2334
7:59 PM
q.v., this

user2334
@mmyers It's not pronounced like "Texan"? How else could you pronounce it? Teex?

@MarkTrapp tech to rhyme with loch. If you can't manage that, tech to rhyme with tech.

user2334
wat

user2334
X is always ecks that's silly someone should tell them

The X is supposed to be a Greek chi

user2334
8:03 PM
Ah

user2334
Wait, then what about LaTeX? I call shenanigans

@MarkTrapp I think lay-tech is the most common
lah-tech and lah-teX are also heard
lay-tecks says you don't know what it is

user2334
Or you know how words in English are pronounced. Shenanigans remain in effect

@MarkTrapp I know how words in English are pronounced! In a way that is absolutely uninfluenced by the spelling.

user2334
Nonsense, English is a regular language contingent upon 438,000 rules and patterns

8:08 PM
say, an English question: to Joe American who's heard of the Internet but isn't a computer geek, can the word mail mean something you write in Outlook, as opposed to something you put a stamp on?

user2334
Sure. Unless this is the 90s again, even Joe American knows mail means email

user2334
If this is the 90s again, I'm breaking my snap bracelets out of storage

Wait, is TeX not pronounced like "technology"? I've never heard this "loch" stuff before

TeX ( as in Greek, but often pronounced in English) is a typesetting system designed and mostly written by Donald Knuth and released in 1978. Within the typesetting system, its name is formatted as . Together with the Metafont language for font description and the Computer Modern family of typefaces, TeX was designed with two main goals in mind: to allow anybody to produce high-quality books using a reasonable amount of effort, and to provide a system that would give exactly the same results on all computers, now and in the future. TeX is a popular means by which to typeset complex m...
contrast with
LaTeX (formatted as \mathbf{L\!\!^{{}_{\scriptstyle A}} \!\!\!\!\!\;\; T\!_{\displaystyle E} \! X}, pronounced , , , or ) is a document markup language and document preparation system for the TeX typesetting program. The term LaTeX refers only to the language in which documents are written, not to the editor used to write those documents. In order to create a document in LaTeX, a .tex file must be created using some form of text editor. While most text editors can be used to create a LaTeX document, a number of editors have been created specifically for working with LaTeX. LaTeX i...

So the "TeX" in LaTeX is generally pronounced differently than TeX itself? That's insanity

8:20 PM
@MichaelMrozek and lame is generally pronounced differently from la + me

@Gilles "la" and "me" aren't root words of "lame" -- it's not like it's a coincidence that LaTeX has "TeX" in it

@MichaelMrozek ok then, like famous and infamous (which, obviously, are antonyms)

He's not just famous, he's in famous!

I'm sure you can find hundreds of equally insane cases, but this is a chosen name; I don't know why they would've done that

@MichaelMrozek they're proper nouns, which even in sane languages often have nonintuitive pronunciations

user2334
8:30 PM
the ch in tech and the ch in loch are the same: LaTeX and TeX are pronounced the same

You'd make a horrible Scotchman
You could if you had a properly outfitted lab, I mean

@mmyers I could make a horrible Scotch, man. In my bathtub
