A: What the heck...?

badpBecause there are no grounds to delete the answer. I can't really understand the topic (ah, the joys of moderating plaintext gibberish), but it's from what I understand the "best" answer to that question that is currently available on the Internet. The fact the asker's been less than honest in at...

@tiddy tagging, a perennial favorite.
@tiddy tonight, maybe SSX & GOW?
we shall see

user2334
@badp There's that, but I'm more commenting about who's involved.

@MarkTrapp You mean "StupidOne"? I have no idea why I shouldn't be surprised <_<

@MarkTrapp yeah, I made the connection late, but I know what you're talking about.

@agent86 Have you started either?

7:03 PM
@tiddy nah, they're probably in my mailbox at the moment.
I have t-minus 2 weeks to play them before the D3 launch, plus the possibility of kid #3. wish me luck...

@agent86 Surprised you'll even have time to check on your mailbox with a post-pregnancy porn explosion looming on your horizon

@badp One point worth mentioning in regards to that meta post: The "vandalism" you corrected in your edit to the answer in question was merely Matthew Read removing the information that was stolen from Sorean's answer.

@Fluttershy Yeah, I know.

Also, sorry for the triple ping... Apparently I can't type today.

It wasn't as much stolen as it was... borrowed though. There's absolutely nothing wrong with what he did there. It's the whole point of our using cc-wiki as our license.

7:07 PM
@badp Nothing wrong with "I'm going to downvote your answer and then steal your information"?

He did not however give credit, so I changed the link from going straight to the spreadsheet to going to the other guy's answer
@Fluttershy You can't steal information, don't be silly.

@badp I noticed you did this. I thought it was a pretty creative compromise.

user2334
Whole situation could've been avoided if he just said, "Blah blah blah is for X situation, but as Sorean mentions, in Y situation, it's blah blah blork."

So what's stopping me from changing my answer to have the same information? Then technically both answers would not be distinct.

@MarkTrapp which is what I did.

7:08 PM
@Sorean Honesty and being a good person?

The whole situation really though isn't about the "stealings" of the information

@Fluttershy Two wrongs don't make a right, as they say.

user2334
@badp Right, but after the fact. The feh-itude was already done

Heh, I didn't have any intention of doing it.
Just curious is all.

it's about his downvoting the other answer in order to get the required vote difference to receive the bounty

user2334
7:09 PM
Right, that too

This one is the whole problem
By all means, when we write answers to the same question, we should see it as a collaborative process: it's cool to reference others' answers (with credit) to make your own more complete.

user2334
@badp I'd say it's required per the terms of CC-BY-SA.

@MarkTrapp Well, copyright only protects the actual words you used
It's certainly the spirit of using CC-BY-SA in the first place though
It means remixing information is awesome - but give credit.

Speaking of remixes @agent86, SSX auto remixes your songs
slightly

So the game giveaway still only wants questions, not posts in general (answers don't count)?

user2334
7:14 PM
I don't want to inflame a conflict of interest I have with the answerer by editing it, but would be nice to see Sorean's name explicitly mentioned in the answer as the source. Just reminds me of the crap large news websites do with bloggers, "According to an Apple fan site" rather than "According to 9to5mac"

@tiddy auto-remix? that sounds weird and/or futuristic.

@MarkTrapp I did link, but do feel free to edit Sorean's name in.
@agent86 Is it really? Crossfade and perhaps try to slow/speed up the fading song to match the BPM of the upcoming song
(I agree calculating BPM "live" is harder than it sounds. What is a beat?)
@Beofett Don't worry, the controversy was kind of bottled and par for course for meta discussion here. We feel strongly about the site and have much desire to drive it in what we think is the best direction for it. Don't be scared about our passion :)

@badp Sometimes the passion scares me

Is rep lost from an answer being deleted?

user2334
@Fluttershy Yes, assuming the answer is not 3 score or higher and 60 days old

Q: Can Nocturne use his Ultimate to scape Nautilus's ult

MichelI saw this question about Nautilus's ultimate, and the answer shows that it can be beat by Master Yi (in the example). I was wondering as Nocturne, it's worth spend my ultimate to run from Nautilus Ult? or it's not worth (the distance still got me)? In this video: ...

@MarkTrapp Interesting... I'm just throwing this out there: Given his blatant and admitted abuse of the voting system, I wouldn't be against his answer (though correct) being deleted. Behavior that negatively effects the site should be punished more severely than a week long suspension. But, that's just my opinion...

user2334
Meh. Suspension is about correcting behavior, not punishing people. I think the answer should be deleted because it's a crap answer: duplicates the answer already there and adds irrelevant information to make it marginally different

user2334
Plus having a -13 score answer at the top makes us look bad

@MarkTrapp I have no idea whether it's crap or not, but it didn't start being duplicate
he simply posted half answer from his own and "borrowed" without credit the other half from the other answerer

Not to mention his complete disregard of more trusted users, and mods, trying to fix his mistake, by rolling back to his original edit.

7:28 PM
From the outside it looks like two complementary ways to achieve the same goal

user2334
@badp But that's where it is now. It didn't originally answer the question, so the original answer was a wash and doesn't really count. But when the right answer came about, it changed to duplicate it.

@Fluttershy I'm surprised (and relieved) I didn't have to lock his answer.

@badp Give it time. He'll roll it back again, I'm sure.

@MarkTrapp Then it should've been up to you (plural you, not you you Mark Trapp - stupid English!) to flag as not an answer :P

user2334
@badp Sure, but this is the first time I've seen this :P If there wasn't a clusterscrew attached to it and a meta post about it, I probably would've

user2334
7:30 PM
y'all all

Rep capped again! Damn you, Diablo games.

@MarkTrapp I've also seen ya'll in common use. Super confusing!

user2334
y'all is the Southern way to introduce 2nd-person plural, except when it's not used for that. So people invented y'all all

@MarkTrapp Technically it could still be flagged for moderator attention with links to his (now deleted, but a 20k should be able to see it right?) comment, the Meta thread, and links showing his lack of cooperation in edits through constant roll backs... Right?

What would you flag it for, though? The moderators are right here

user2334
7:32 PM
@Fluttershy Only mods can see deleted comments

@Fluttershy None of that's relevant to answering this question: "did he or did he not answer the asker's question with his post"?
That's what you should ask when flagging "not an answer"
As it is all I know is it does answer in its current form
so it can't be deleted for not being an answer.

@badp Currently, yes. Originally, no... I was thinking Flag for moderator attention as Other, citing reasons for deletion.

user2334
Could be flagged as VLQ for wholly duplicating another, earlier answer. But the jury's still out about flagging crap answers for deletion

And that's pretty much the only answer deletion reason I feel comfortable with using

The answer needs to be taken as being independent from the author who posted it

user2334
7:33 PM
20kers could vote to delete it if it wasn't accepted :/

@badp Being passionate about the site is generally a good thing :)

Judgment on the answer should not be made just because the author decided to be abusive to the system.

@GraceNote True, can we just purge the bounty AND the comments from the question then?
and leave all the downvotes of course

FAE
@Resorath Is purging bounties even possible?

@FAE /shrug

user2334
7:35 PM
@Resorath At least link to the meta discussion. Or I fear duplicate comments and questions asking what happened

user2334
c.f. Streisand effect

FAE
Also I see there's been more drama re: the SWTOR question.

@FAE We can refund bounties before they're awarded, not later

FAE
@badp Gotcha

user2334
@FAE I may or may not have seen devs do it

7:35 PM
and even then it's an exceptional measure - don't make plans relying on bounty refunding happening

@MarkTrapp that is probably what I remember

user2334
I like @Fluttershy's idea of awarding all the bounties to Sorean's answer: just added another one

@MarkTrapp Feel free to award a bounty to any of my answers for giving you the idea! <3 lol

@Resorath The downvotes are technically a bad thing.

We just need a policy that says "Don't answer your own question by plagiarising another answer and then accept it"
seems like common sense

7:38 PM
Everyone who downvoted the answer because of the actions of the user is technically in as bad a position as the user for downvoting the opposing answer to win the bounty.

user2334
It's a bad answer, though. Downvote, if you're so inclined, for that reason

Let's not stoop to revenge downvoting over poor behavior, please. Vote based on the post, not based on the poster. — agent86 yesterday

@GraceNote Even if the downvote was because, before the edits, his answer didn't answer the question?

@GraceNote I'm defending my downvote as "User did not answer the question" by originally answering about legacy experience. Plagiarising and gloating is just icing on the cake.

@Fluttershy What do we have editing for then?

Oak
7:39 PM
@Fluttershy if you downvoted an answer for not answering the question, and then it was edited to answer the question, the appropriate course of action is to cancel your downvote.

@Oak Even if the edit is plagiarism? to be that is a flag not a vote cancel
Also Vietnamese subs are delicious

user2334
@Oak Not when that information duplicates existing, correct answers. It's no different than if the answerer posted after the other answers.

Oak
@Resorath in any case if the answer is good, don't downvote it. You're misleading any innocent future visitor to the site.

user2334
People are down voted without pity, or remorse, or fear, for late answers that are already covered by existing answers all the time

Oak
@MarkTrapp there are many discussions in meta.so that say copied answers should not be downvoted because they're still correct

7:42 PM
Your votes are yours, do what you believe is appropriate with them. — LessPop_MoreFizz yesterday

Oak
@MarkTrapp they do occasionally. But I'm not sure that's the right thing to do.

@Fluttershy That goes both ways ♫

user2334
@Oak I don't recall any discussions to that effect. The latest one I could find suggests down-voting, commenting, and flagging.

Oak
@MarkTrapp well maybe I'm wrong. But I definitely recall different opinions. Let me see if I can find them.

@Fluttershy @Resorath "Everyone who downvoted the answer because of the actions of the user [...]"
If you downvoted for other reasons, that wouldn't be included in that statement

7:45 PM
3 (three). Answer is copied directly from another user

If, as in this case, the answer was a direct copy of another users' work, PLEASE flag it for moderator attention! That is unethical and an abuse of our users, and will not be tolerated.

Oak
@Resorath @MarkTrapp as far as I can see those refer to actual copy-pasting
which, I agree, is flag-worthy
But unlike the general case of referring parts, and possibly copying information

Q: Handling answers that build heavily on (or are copied outright from) existing answers

@Oak What if he tried citing his source as the Google Doc that Sorean made, without any reference to it coming from Sorean's answer?

Oak
@MarkTrapp re-reading what I've written, though, I see I wasn't clear. "Copied" for me is not a copy-paste. Copy-paste is flag-worthy.

user2334
I'm not talking about copy-paste either, but I'm also not talking about answers that "build upon" existing answers. I'm talking about answers that add no new information, or the information they add is irrelevant to the question.

user2334
Which is what I believe this is an instance of

What's the policy on copy pasting from OTHER sites
without citing

user2334
Take a contrived, but similar example. If I spent my time adding new answers that just link to the accepted answer, wouldn't you agree I'd be at least deserving of down votes?

I know it hasn't happened here yet, but WHAT IF?

user2334
@tiddy Plagiarism is auto-delete

@tiddy Oh it's happened. <.<
The answer was deleted.

Oak
7:50 PM
@MarkTrapp I'd say deletion in that case

user2334
So why is this situation different?

Oak
@MarkTrapp I don't know. Let me think and try to formulate my opinion. I'll get back to you :)

user2334
Haha, okay :P

Oak
I mean, let's take a different hypothetical case

@Oak I'm inclined to agree with @MarkTrapp in this regard... All danRhul did was copy/paste Sorean's information to his answer, including the link to Sorean's google document.

Oak
7:52 PM
A new user comes and submits a new answer to an existing question
It's long and detailed and correctly answers the question. But it does not add any information which is missing from other, existing answers.
Is this downvote-worthy?
Maybe it combines all the other answers together, and should actually be upvoted to the top of the list?

@Oak New use provides good content, new user should be encouraged

user2334
@Oak I agree: I guess I consider the presentation of the information information as well. Given what we're trying to do here.

@Oak This... is not at all the case here.

Oak
The upvote/downvote reasons are usefulness. I think that ultimately, answers should be judged on how useful they are to the question's asker. Downvoting an answer just because another answer covers it is not appropriate, imo
Answers should be judged only based on the question, not based on other answers
(not including copying)

@Oak Answers always get downvoted for not adding any additional information. Usually with comments to the effect of, "This adds nothing more to the previous answer. Please do not duplicate answers."

Oak
7:55 PM
@Resorath I'm trying to demonstrate the other extreme, in response to Mark. I know it's far from the case here :) bear with me

user2334
@Oak I don't agree that a duplicate answer is useful, though. It's noise.

Oak
@Fluttershy so you think my hypothetical case above should be downvoted?

@Oak I would only downvote a dupe answer if it was on an old question, and extremely minimal.

Oak
@MarkTrapp what if it's duplicate... but slightly better than the duplicate? Maybe the first answer is now noise?

@Oak I would certainly gather the community opinion before voting on an answer such as your hypothetical. Especially if the answer gave credit where credit was due, as opposed to just stealing the credit.

7:57 PM
@Oak I'm not getting anything from these hypothetical. The user knew what they were doing, and is enjoying getting rep by abusing our voting system and prefers to annoy other users with comments.

Oak
@Fluttershy it's usually the act of voting which is gathering the community's opinion :)
@Resorath I'm not referring to the current case (hence "hypothetical"). I'm responding to Mark's opinion about duplicate answers in general.
The current case, unfortunately, is not hypothetical

user2334
@Oak That's the thing: if it's significantly better, it's up-vote worthy for sure. If it's just slightly better, it's not really all that helpful. New answers should bring something to the party: own analysis, new information, proofing of ideas, etc.

user2334
@Oak But I would agree in the cases where an old answer is made obsolete by the new answer: the appropriate, ideal-world situation is that, when your answer is inferior to an existing answer, you should delete it. And voters should assess whether or not an existing answer, presented with the new answer, is noise and not useful anymore and vote accordingly.

Oak
We might have mellowed each other's opinion :)
In any case, I think there should be a distinction between answers which are merely covered by other answers, versus answers which actually copy from other answers (with or without attribution)
And the latter (as is the case here) should be scrutinized carefully
But the proper action might be flagging and/or deletion, not just downvote

Just ban him

8:03 PM

Oak
@Resorath the case here is definitely more akin to copy-paste than just citing another answer.

This makes me want to ask, how can I kill a claptrap?

@Oak I think in the first case, the answer should be carefully edited to remove duplicate information (provided a certain timespan has passed, so that the answer existed well after the duplicate). In the second case, just delete the answer. This is original research that I'm sure the user wouldn't have done if he had known this kind of crap was going to go down.

@badp Play the Claptrap DLC

My backpack's full! You promised me a backpack SDU! WHERE IS MY BACKPACK SDU!

user2334
8:03 PM
@Oak Yeah: my personal opinion is that it should be deleted, but that's still a sticky, unresolved issue on Gaming. I do think it's entirely appropriate to down-vote the answer: it's noise.

Oak
@Resorath are you sure? Because he is receiving something like 800 rep from the whole thing

I think either way @Oak, we should remove the duplicate information from his answer and just let this one be a case of "the accepted answer is wrong, oh well"

Oak
It makes me want to get my original work stolen.
:)

@Oak Ya that is an interesting turn of events

@Resorath Editors have tried removing the duplicate information. It's been returned either by danRhul himself, or someone else.

8:05 PM
@Fluttershy I know :/

Eat a dick, Koth.

Fun fact: His comment about earning way more rep than he's lost is false. He's sitting at 35 now. <.<

@MarkTrapp Not terribly, no.

But he gained 75 in total

@GraceNote Where is your +40 from? (75 - 35)

5 upvotes + 25 bounty = 75 - 40 from downvotes = net 35

Okay, Shog wants us to delete the top answer, move the link into the other answer, cancel Mark's bounty, and CW the entire mess. Might as well do.

@badp Move what link? The link that's already in Sorean's answer?

The legacy exp one

Which answer are we talking about?

Oh. Nevermind.

The legacy rep wasn't even asked for

I just saw that one.

I say just let @badp go for it. Then @Sorean can edit out the useless info if he wants and @MarkTrapp can readd the bounty if he wants

I thought it had been made clear that votes are inconsistent.
Clearly those upvotes were given to him by people that thought he deserved them.

@IanPugsley I've mentioned something similar to this before. People don't see it as an issue.

user2334
@badp I'm not sure you can revenge bounty: I'm not hurting danRhul by adding a bounty to someone else's post :P But while the motivation for taking an interest in the question was due to poor circumstances, I've been looking for things to add bounties on since after 20k rep is mostly meaningless.

@Resorath I was specifically referring to him being the first "gaming user" to get one

@Mark You can always ask...
@Gnome Who's the other musician for Raven's game?

Hopefully Raven will join those of us who view their free time through a magnifying glass

@RonanForman Dunno, Raven just sent me his music files.

I'm always trying to find more orchestral composers, especially VG ones.

A: How Can I Take Down Big Daddies?

GnomeSliceThe most important thing to remember is that as long as the Big Daddy is mobile with a line of sight on you, you are in mortal danger. The trick to bringing down a Big Daddy is to use whatever means possible to immobilize him. There are various tools you can use to impede his movement, or attac...

Is this too subjective an answer?

What?
I mean 8 or so trap bolts and a shotgun/grenade launcher is all you need
You covered that and more

Yes but... it still seems subjective. I mean those aren't the only ways to do it.

What? Just let it go
It's a fine answer

OKAY I WILL.
Just checking. =]

8:46 PM
@Gnome You can never cover everything.

But literally trap bolts and a grenade will take down a Big Daddy on Hard in about 3-5 seconds

Yeah, I know. But Trap bolts get pretty hard to come by if you use them all on every Big Daddy.

big daddy...hard...

Trap bolts are made by invention
With the invention tonics the supply is nearly endless

Wow....

@NickT Flagged and commented.
I never get to use flags any more, it seems.
@badp also, are you ever going to accept this?

A: Does Irukandji only have one level?

GnomeSliceYes, there is only one level. I think the game was never fully completed, so while it still says 'level 1' at the beginning, it is in fact, the only level.

@GnomeSlice Never!

Oh, okay. Just making sure.

@badp @GnomeSlice Just tappppp it in. Just tappppppppp it in. Give it a little tappy. Tap tap taparoo

@tiddy ...Pardon?

Alas, I have but one downvote to give. gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/64619/…

@bwarner I'm gonna hold off on that one.
Also, I'm going through all of my old answers at the moment. Moar upvtotes!

A: How do I help organize my town in die2nite?

GnomeSliceBe Active! One of the best things you can do is to make everything as simple as possible for the rest of the town. One of the easiest ways to do this is to make sure the stickied threads stay on-topic. One of the easiest ways to do this is to start off by making a bunch of other threads for s...

Q: Should I have any issues hosting Minecraft on a dedicated server running an Intel Atom D525?

RyanAnyone have experience with these chips? So far I've had up to 6 on at once during testing periods and everyone said it performed fine with no lag. The specs are CentOS, Intel Atom Dual-Core 1.8 Ghz D525, 4GB RAM DDR3-1333, SATA II HDD, 100Mb/s output. Currently I am only running pure Vanilla,...

I really should play Die2Nite again...

@badp No. No "Can I run game X on system Y" questions.

@badp sure, then I can close it here as "too localized", don't have the rep on SU

8:56 PM
@bwarner @badp this.

I don't think the gaming community would be the best group equipped to answer that question

A: Mario Kart DS: how to beat staff ghosts?

GnomeSlice      One of the best tricks, if you aren't keen on learning how to 'snake' is to make sure you choose a vehicle with a full rating for 'items'. These vehicles will start with 3 mushroom boosts, as opposed to 1 or 2 for vehicles with a lower rating. If you get 3 boosts, you shoul...

@tiddy they are, it's just a bad question as it's extremely specific (and only a handful/one person will ever care about it)

@NickT well that's an interesting precedent

@NickT So?
