@balpha Chat was constantly disconnected. I could channel hop at a normal speed and it would show the chat updates, but I can not tell you how many times I saw the 'chat is not responding' popup today while I was at work.

At that point, though, the FOV thing complicates things exceedingly, since the probability combinations depend on the relative positions of all of the creepers

user2334
@murgatroid99 That doesn't sound right. For one, take one chunk of 256 blocks. If they were all filled with creepers, the probability wouldn't increase at that moment in time: only one block would get hit. And two: whether lightning strikes a chunk is an independent event. Like, if you flip two coins, the probability one of them lands on heads is still 50%

@James Do you have a bad internet connection there? I recently made a change that causes the notification to possibly appear earlier than it used to, but it still requires three failed polls in a row

user2334
…right?

@balpha We have a 3MBit business ethernet loop.. should be nigh unstoppable, even if it is slow.

user2334
6:04 AM
I do think the chances are increased as time goes on as long as creepers don't despawn, though.

@James Weird... what browser?

@MarkTrapp The first thing is because you said that lightning only hits one block in a chunk at a time, so the probabilities of lightening hitting two blocks in the same chunk is not independent. And creepers can be in different chunks

@balpha Chrome
And I honestly thought it was just me all day until Ben said he was having the same issue.

@MarkTrapp Second, flipping two coins has four possibilities: "HH, HT, TH, TT", so probability of a head is 3/4
@MarkTrapp Also, in your post you pointed out correctly that if a chunk is full of creepers, the overall probability of seeing a charged creeper is greater

@James Next time that happens, can you check in the network tab of the Ctrl-Shift-J dev tools for failed AJAX requests? (also, when you don't F5, is the connection reestablished, i.e. does the notification disappear again?)
oh, and are you behind a proxy that prevents websocket connections?

6:09 AM
@balpha Not that I am aware of, chat has worked fine for weeks until today.
@balpha Will do if it happens tomorrow.. I am honestly hoping it wont :)

@MarkTrapp I would keep talking about this, but it's after 2 am here and I should go to bed

@James it's not really a question of "working", websockets are entirely optional. I made a rather large change to the whole server-communication code yesterday, so it's entirely possible (and probable) that this is related.

Ahhh

user2334
@murgatroid99 But if I'm looking at either coin, it's 50%. The probability of one specific coin toss isn't affected by the other. But I think we're talking about the same thing: first lightning strike, the probability is what I wrote in my answer. The second lightning strike, the probability would increase.

And when it comes to "hmm, I'm having connection issues", I erred on the defensive side here, especially with the big refactoring, since the alternative would be that people in the room are telling tons of jokes about you, and you don't even notice because the client hasn't realized that there are connection issues. So, any details on this would be appreciated if you see it again.

6:14 AM
@MarkTrapp can lightening strike in two chunks at the same time?

user2334
@murgatroid99 No. It iterates over the available chunks and checks to see if lightning strikes it (1:100,000 chance). If it does, it picks one block out of 256 in the chunk to designate as being hit

@MarkTrapp but there's nothing stopping it from hitting another chunk in the same frame?

user2334
Well, there's nothing stopping another chunk from being hit in the same loop no… I see it

user2334
So it's probability of all the chunks available together

user2334
1:25,600,000 choose ChunksLoaded or whatever

user2334
6:17 AM
(assuming there's a creeper in each chunk)

user2334
Ugh, this problem sucks

@MarkTrapp yeah. Best bet is to add the assumption of just one creeper around (and one frame in which lightening can strike) or something
@MarkTrapp Now that I think about it, I think your answer actually calculates the probability of seeing a particular creeper get hit by lightning

user2334
9:09 AM
@murgatroid99 Okay, I think I nailed it. Assume you always see a charged creeper if it exists. P(any chunk getting hit) is (1/100,000)*chunks. With one creeper, P(creeper getting hit) is P(chunk)/chunk-blocks/chunks. P(creeper) after N ticks is (1 - P(creeper))^N.

9:27 AM
@MarkTrapp I so wish I could confirm your math, but I don't play minecraft and have no idea what the relation between chunks, blocks and creepers is. Sorry. I'll look into it and see what I can say, but for the last 2 hours I've been fighting with a Steam/Valve issue and I'm prioritizing taking action on that first.
On that note, @MarkTrapp Do you run Steam? Is your inventory showing up correctly?

@skovacs1 through Steam or ingame?

@MarkTrapp A little bit of column A, a little bit of column B. Portal 2 stopped showing up in my Steam invo through Steam at some point in the last few months. In Portal 2, it says it can't access Steam when I try to check my invo there (despite being launched through Steam with overlay and all).
I have stuff in my Portal 2 invo so it should be showing up somewhere.
Just finishing up searches and troubleshooting before I go pester Steam support.

user2334
@skovacs1 If you do want to give it a go, the givens are: 1 creeper = 1 block. 1 chunk = 16x16 block area. Playable area = 206 chunks. Every tick, the game checks each chunk and rolls a 100,000 die. If it passes, it picks a block in the chunk at random. If the block selected contains a creeper, the creeper becomes charged. Multiple chunks can be affected by lightning on a given tick, but only one block per chunk can be affected.

user2334
@skovacs1 I do run Steam, but I don't know to what you refer when you say inventory.

@MarkTrapp never heard of Steam Inventory? With Steam open, select View/Inventory. It contains all inventories that participate in steam trading (ie. Portal 2, Spiral Knights, TF2, etc.)

10:07 AM
@MarkTrapp This nested probabilities of independent selected events is proving quite challenging

10:27 AM
@MarkTrapp But what I can tell you is that your math is no good. Firstly, these dice rolls are independent events and therefore if the formula that you are looking for is P(Lightning hitting a block), it would be something like gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/probability/calcdice.htm#cond1 where you're trying to find out if any of these independent dice rolls yielded a given result so P(lightning strike) = P(everything)-P(no lightning strike) = (100000^chunks - (100000-1)^chunks)/100000^chunks

10:46 AM
@MarkTrapp The reason this is getting complicated is that this nests very badly. So the P(charged creeper) = P(chunk with a creeper being hit) * P(creeper being on the block hit in a chunk hit by lightning) and this becomes messy because multiple chunks with creepers could be hit thus increasing the chances of a block with a creeper being hit.

user2334
@skovacs1 Numbers are identical to what I got.

user2334
P(chunk) = 1:485, P(1 creeper) = 1:25,600,000, P(1 creeper after 3600 seconds) = 1:7,111

@MarkTrapp I don't follow, in your previous post, you said, "P(any chunk getting hit) is (1/100,000)*chunks" which for 206 chunks as you described to me is 206/100000 = 0.00206 and not 1:485 which is 0.0020618557...

user2334
@skovacs1 Let me rephrase: you are correct that P(chunk) is the formula you provided. The number works out to be the same as what I got (by coincidence). I used the correct formula (the one you provided) to calculate P(Creeper) and P(Creeper after N seconds).

@MarkTrapp The actual probability of a chunk getting hit using the correct formula that I described (100000^206 -99999^206)/100000^206 comes out to 0.00205788993509161563758340146395

user2334
11:00 AM
@skovacs1 Yes, that's what I got. Which is 1:485. Same thing as in my answer.

@MarkTrapp Did you pull up a calculator and type in 1/485? It's not the same.

user2334
@skovacs1 It's 1:485.4: I rounded. It doesn't significantly change the answer.

user2334
Again, you are correct: that's the right formula. It just so happens that, by sheer coincidence, it yields the same result

@MarkTrapp You never said anything about rounding. I thought we were going for the exact probability.

user2334
Sorry, I thought that was implied: it would be pretty amazing if—even with the wrong formulae—every single number was a whole number.

11:04 AM
Yes. Yes it would
So I'm a little unclear on what you meant by "P(chunk)/chunk-blocks/chunks" You're saying that the probability of a creeper getting hit when there is only 1 creeper is equal to the probability of a chunk getting hit for every chunk less the number of blocks per chunk?

Why does "Not Constructive" have the same description on meta as on main?

user2334
@OrigamiRobot Why wouldn't it?

> this question will likely solicit opinion, debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion.

user2334
@skovacs1 No, it's equal to the probability of lightning hitting a chunk multiplied by the probability of the creeper being in the chunk multiplied by the probability of the creeper being in the block that gets hit by lightning

Duh
It's meta

user2334
11:16 AM
@OrigamiRobot All those things are bad on meta, too

Then 90% of meta should be closed on Gaming :P

@MarkTrapp Hey. You put the minus sign on your formula in chat, not me.

user2334
@skovacs1 "chunk-blocks" should be read as a single identifier.

@MarkTrapp Regardless of math/english = mess. In that rare instance of only one creeper in the world, it would be something more like 0.0000000390224881502505999238357377114 which is pretty close to 1:25,600,000 so if rounding is cool, then your formula is more or less close enough.

user2334
11:23 AM
It's off by 26,200 or so but what's 26,200 chances between friends?

@MarkTrapp Then you add in time and don't factor in whether the creep moves and the chance of despawn and if you throw in more creeps, the complexity becomes uncomfortably worse. I'm sure it's off by more than that, but if you phrase your answer as it is better than X, it'll probably do.
I can't believe I was trying to calculate the absolute probability for n creeps

user2334
@skovacs1 Assume the creeper doesn't move or despawn: there's no way to account for those factors. Or don't, I don't really care either way. But write your own answer if you want to take that on.

user2334
There are so many x factors in the problem you have to assume a lot in order to make the problem even remotely manageable

Sorry. I forgot to emote. I was just poking fun at that point :P. I wouldn't expect anyone to factor in despawn, new creep spawn and creep movement - that'd be nuts.
Still even just calculating for multiple creeps gets nasty
And woot, after some forced Steam restarting and a few other things, my Steam invo is back in order.

user2334
12:01 PM
@skovacs1 So the formula is (100000^chunks - (100000-1)^chunks)/100000^chunks) for one tick; for N ticks, the formula would be (100000^(chunks*N) - (100000-1)^(chunks*N))/100000^(chunks*N)), right?

user2334
Since all the ticks are doing is padding more chunks onto number of chances

@MarkTrapp sort of. That first one would be the formula for the chance of lightning striking at all as you haven't factored the presence of the creep into that. As far as factoring in the ticks that way, it shouldn't be too far off.

user2334
Right, I'm just figuring out whether a chunk has been hit.

user2334
If that's correct, my numbers are way off and charged creepers are incredibly common.

user2334
Also, I need a super computer. Script is still running attempting to calculate for 3,600 ticks

12:07 PM
It doesn't quite work like that because every tick you'd have to re-add the 1 creeper so it's not quite right, but just for chance of seeing lightning, it's close enough
Lightning is incredibly common

user2334
Oh right, I can't aggregate the probability of the creeper over all the ticks

user2334
I have to calculate it separately per tick

user2334
(P[creeper]^ticks - (P[creeper] - 1)^ticks)/(P[creeper] ^ ticks) mayhaps

user2334
Still surpisingly not far off from my original numbers. 1:7118 instead of 1:7111 at 3,600 ticks; 1:1643 instead of 1:1641 at 15,600 ticks

I flagged it, because it's roughly equivalent to answering a question about any game with "If you play it for a long time, stuff will happen."

the kind of stuff Community would flag low quality score over

12:30 PM
@MarkTrapp not quite. You can't treat exponents that way. For multiplication and division, you're good, but for subtraction, it doesn't work that way (10-5)^2 = 25 while 10^2 - 5^2 = 75.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Yeah, I did delete the post.
You do find agreement with me over that.
I'm just explaining why you got your flag dismissed for a post that did eventually get deleted by a moderator.

@LessPopMoreFizz I suppose it was. I guess we've categorically decided shopping questions are off topic, but DLC seems a little bit of a special case to me. I suppose you could always ask a game specific question, but if there is such a resource that states "this DLC was pre-order only" I'd be interested at least to know about it. When I see certain unlocks, armor, hats, etc in game I often wonder "is there any way for me to get that?" Any time it was pre-order DLC, the answer is no...
.... well unless I preordered I suppose.

I sneeze whenever I'm near cats.

Also, there is a spider in my stairwell. I'm trapped down stairs forever.

@StrixVaria Yeah, but your sneezes aren't as loud.
or rare.

I sneeze pretty loud. I'm not familiar with cat sneezes so I can't definitively give a relative volume.

2:01 PM
@badp Yeah, my cat sneezes from time to time.

@Lazers What is this I don't even?...

Although very rarely.
@fbueckert Someone who hasn't bothered to do any research.

@Wipqozn sigh People like that...irk me.

@fbueckert Does it read better now?

That awkward moment when you come in and notice that your gravatar isn't on the list of people who's supposed to be in this room for some reason
Oh bother, why is this linked to my Chinese.SE account again?
There we go, much better

@badp You get an upvote for that edit alone.
As a sidenote, where the crap does that guys rep come from? Does even a profile view filter out ignored tags?

@fbueckert You're looking at his meta profile.

@fbueckert WoW and DOTA mainly.

And on meta, your rep is copied over from the main site

Huh. I was unaware that main and meta profiles are separated like that.
Good to know, though.

@Ronan Has anyone considered perhaps playing UHC with teams?

2:09 PM
@John Like season 4 of mindcrack's?

@YiJiang We really really need to be able to upvote edits
Get to it please

@badp I concur.
We also need to be able to administer electroshock therapy through the internets.
Perhaps that would reduce the amount of BAD grammar.

and BAD spelling and BAD sentence structure and misuse of words and...

"Must ask question as quickly as possible! What? I have spelling and grammar errors? Who cares! Submit!" zzzzzzaaaaap

Although some of the robo-translated questions are also pretty terrible. I can't entirely blame them if English isn't their primary language, but still...
Still upvoting edits would be fitting in this instance.

@skovacs1 Sadly, I find those where English isn't their primary language put more effort into being understood. It's not perfect, but it's certainly much more understandable than those where English IS their native language, and the amount of effort invested is the absolute minimum.

2:46 PM
@Ronan I have not seen that, but if it's UHC with teams, then yes.

Dead Space 1 & 2 @5$ USD on Steam till tomorrow
each

We could have 2 big teams, 4 little ones, or 3 mediocre ones.

@John I think pairs would work good.

@tiddy uh? Yesterday I bought DS1 at €2.5, with DS2 priced at €10

What you want me to tell you
My sympathies

2:50 PM
@Ronan So do I

@tiddy and prices now are DS1 still at €2.5 and DS2 at € 7.5
so I guess I'm good :)
weird to notice the region discrepancy anyway.

Indeed

stupid region locking

That Linux steam article was great
Seriously, I'd probably reach professional happiness at Valve
Besides working in a perpetual rain cycle, I can't imagine a better job

@tiddy I dunno. Sounds great from the outside, but I bet those guys work some monster hours

2:58 PM
@agent86 Their employee handbook says that if you do you're failing

you've got to assume they've got a billion people waiting for jobs there, so it's one of those places where you've got to be smarter/faster/more willing to work than all those other people

I dunno

@badp I'm not sure if this is what you're referencing, but I think there was some "joke" or "fake" valve employee handbook floating around in recent weeks.

Rather the problem is that once you're in there's nobody to tell you what to do.
@agent86 Was it really fake? It looked very real.
and consistent with what I've read about Valve as a company.
