Is it a relatively minor holiday? I asked one of my Jewish friends and he had never heard of it.

@Pavel my guess is that it's a relatively major one - there are special things they do on that day, like read something and make noises when somebody's name occurs
 
Basically, it's a celebration of one of Hitler's spiritual ancestors not having his way.

@Pavel on the other hand, it's a typical jewish holiday - as Adam once said, (I'm quoting loosely) most of our holidays are like, somebody tries to kill all jews, he fails, we rejoice :)
