8:03 PM
as if. 1/3/13 will still get them excited.

@studiohack Blinks at a certain rate or blinks erratically?

blinks green at regular intervals
w/ or w/o cable
@Troggy

My first guess would be that it is just checking/listening for a connection.
Most cards I have seen do not show any indication until a cable is plugged in.
But, I wouldn't be surprised if some did.

it is an older server that was a business server in its old life (small biz)...
but when i plug in an ethernet cable, I don't get any internet or LAN access @Troggy

Does the rate of blinking change when a cable is plugged in? Does it change color or have multiple lights? (normally a link light indicating connection and an amber light to indicate traffic/activity)
Some of the link lights will change color depending on link speed (10,100,1000)
Does the switch on the other side of the cable indicate a connection?

8:09 PM
nope, there is no recognition or anything - the switch doesn't light up at all on the other end of the cable
I've tested the cable with other machines, and it works... @Troggy

howdy all

howdy @DMA57361

huh, 29 rep per post...nice
@Sathya ta for the heads up
hmm, the lack of meta participation from some candidates is a little worrying

indeed

@DMA57361 @IvoFlipse Yes, meta participation is important.
@studiohack Is the network card an on board (integrated into motherboard) or a individual expansion card?

8:22 PM
@DMA57361: agreed.

and the lack of some of the editing badges or simply general participation in the more moderating aspects of the site is 'worrying' to say the least

This is a bit odd, but I've noticed lately that whenever I post on superuser.com three things are weird:

for some of the newer users it's understandable, but for some of the others...

@Troggy: I'm not sure, I haven't done much hardware wise

1. I can't seem to post without a captcha. Ever.
2. Tag autocompletion is flat-out not working

8:23 PM
what browser are you using?

3. I get a submission failure claiming that my email notification address is invalid.
(so I get to do the captcha twice! yay!)

and your SU account doesn't seem associated with your SO one :S @ChrisR

@studiohack Ok, well when was the last time it worked? Any software changes?

Help, please!

@Troggy: I had Fedora 12 with Amahi Home Server - then I installed over top of that Server 2003

8:25 PM
Ivo: Chrome 9.0.597.67 on a mac

Hasn't worked since the Server 2003 install?

During Server 2003, it worked for a while, then knocked out completely...once or twice it would work, but then knock out again. I had some issues with Server 2003 in other areas, so I installed Fedora 12 again

... And it looks like my account is associated, @Iv
@IvoFlipse, that is.

and still haven't gotten LAN or internet access back @Troggy

8:26 PM
In Windows 7 x64, I've patched uxtheme.dll and themeui.dll with Universal Theme Patcher, but themeservice.dll doesn't exists in the SysWOW64 folder, only in System32, so I can't patch it.

@IvoFlipse Good. Wasn't sure whether the new mods would replace the old ones.

@IvoFlipse what's the easiest way to get a screen shot in for you?

use greenshot (or well any screenshot tool) and upload it into chat
or better yet, open a question on MSU, where the devs can see it too

8:31 PM
my screenshot was from your SO account @ChrisR

@ChrisR I would say post on MSO. I like to keep any potential issues like that open for all the mods and devs to see.

@IvoFlipse I See that now; I've included it in the bug report I just made on MSU
I suppose MSO would have been a good place too; I wonder if I'm getting the same issue there...
I don't have a question to ask right now, though, and I'm not willing to spam them.

Is it normal that I don't have a themeservice.dll file in SysWOW64?

good job
might be some html5 authentication problem or something :S
have you tried another browser?

Anyone?

8:40 PM
sorry @Nyuszika7H I'm trying to do too much
what you need that dll for anyway

@Nyuszika7H Let me check.

@IvoFlipse eegh.

@Nyuszika7H I don't have one there either.

@IvoFlipse I need to patch it to be able to use external themes, like AeroVG Se7en.

Looks like I need to update my bug report; appears to be browser-specific

8:41 PM
I'd prefer Chrome too @ChrisR, but might be that Safari doesn't have it

> If I read correctly you have the x64 version. In the sysWOW64 there is no Themeservice.dll that only exists in the System32 folder. In SysWOW64 there is Themeui.dll Do you know which one you are looking for? Are you sure you are using x64? – chianf092 29 May 2010, 01:08 PM ( Source )

@IvoFlipse Just as I observed; tagging at least works in Safari 5, but Chrome... no go.

They'll tell you that they don't support beta browsers...

I'll use UxStyle core instead. Does it support Win7 x64?

why would you want all those theme things? :P

8:53 PM
Interesting. (64-bit Windows)
> 32-bit files: SysWOW64
> 64-bit files: System32

9:26 PM
@Nyuszika7H About the bookmarks thing, I was happy to decide to give them no name...

@TomWij Nice! If I only could do this in Chrome…

That is Chrome, just edit them and remove the name. :-)

@TomWij Oh yep, I see now. :)

Woah.
Lotsa bookmarks :P
I only have one bookmark, the link to ping my FeedBurner feed because otherwise it takes like half a day to update.
Ohhhh.
7 Subscribers ^^

Those are frequent visited sites, others do have a title and are kind of "have to visit them in future or just for future reference or something"

9:29 PM
Ah.

I have a question regarding NIC and IRQ...

Dunno why I have those bookmarked... xD

@studiohack: ICQ, or IRC?
You said IRQ...

IRQ
it is related with PCI cards

Oh.
Sorry.
XD

its all good - anyone here an expert?

Depends on your question.

my ethernet cable port isn't working - the cable does, but not the port - so I'm looking at NIC stuff in my server BIOS. there is a section about PCI IRQ Assignment, and you can assign USB and NIC things different IRQ assignments
what does this mean?

Now, we really need a favicon picker for Chrome! Currently, the only way to do that is to use SQLite Database Browser, but I need to do that every time after I run CCleaner.

9:34 PM
Create some folders on a web host* and make index.html files that forward to the site and store favicons next to them.

@TomWij Huh?

@studiohack Hmm...
@Nyuszika7H I mean, kind of like creating your own site... But instead something that forwards to the URL you want too just so you can put your favicon next to it.
But thinking about it again, it might not work. The chat here is a perfect example, that bookmark favicon changes all the time. :D
(Every site/room here has a different favicon...)

This extension does it, but only in its own interface, not in the bookmark bar. :/

Ah, I see...

@TomWij: the problem is, the server runs Fedora, so I can't do anything in Windows - see my earlier conversation with Troggy - its not too far back...

9:39 PM
(removed - making a better one)

@studiohack Ah, let me find a Linux solution.

SUSUSUSUSUSUSUSUSUSUSUSUSU

just so you know, I can change the IRQ, but I don't know what it does, and I'm just tinkering with trying to get my ethernet port to work, other wise the server is useless as a server... @TomWij
@TomWij: in the BIOS, I just told it to disable the NIC, now it looks like the port may work?! hold on while I confirm

cat /proc/interrupts
should give you a list of interrupts

okay - now since the NIC is disabled, the port recognizes a link but can't use it for some reason @TomWij.
before, the switch didn't recognize the server...

9:47 PM
Well, you have to set the IRQ to a free one in the BIOS, enable the driver/NIC and then it should be able to use the port/link.

Does anyone here know how to run multiple commands with the -exec option of the find command?

But I'm not a Linux expert to assist you more than that.
@MarkSzymanski find . -exec cmd1 -exec cmd2

@TomWij: how do I know which one is free for IRQ?

@TomWij: Thanks!

it's a number that does not appear in that list

9:49 PM
and I type this command as shown the terminal?

Yes

okay, makes more sense @TomWij - will give it a try :P Linux is greek to me, I haven't used it much

@MarkSzymanski Oh, another thing to know:
> Note that it only works if cmd1 has a 0 return code, since -exec is also a test predicate. – Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams 32 secs ago

As I was writing my responses to @IvoFlipse's moderator candidate Q&A, it sort of reminded me of writing scholarship applications. If only super user had a scholarship... :P

10:04 PM
@nhinkle: that would be something to suggest to Jeff

@MarkSzymanski Another mistake, my fault:
find . -exec cmd1 \; -exec cmd2
And to solve the 0 return code thing:
1
A: How do I execute multiple commands when using find?

Ignacio Vazquez-AbramsIf you don't matter about cmd1 being able to prevent cmd2 from being run due to the error code 0: find . -exec cmd1 \; -exec cmd2 \; The only reliable way to get both commands to always run this is to have find invoke a shell that will subsequently run the commands in sequence: find . -exec b...

okay @TomWij: the switch only recognizes the ethernet cable coming from the server if the NIC is disabled and the IRQ is at a certain number (10)...when i enable the NIC but leave the IRQ alone, it doesn't work again...what do you think?

nice answer @nhinkle :)

Thanks @IvoFlipse. You wrote some thought-provoking questions

hehe, too bad nobody answered something really controversial ;)

10:13 PM
Do you know anything more about the chat town-hall that Jeff mentioned in the comments? I was actually thinking of suggesting something like that, then saw it was already in the works.

nobody dared to recommend themselves, as I didn't say who of the others would you pick

Haha, what kinds of controversy were you hoping for?

No Jeff didn't tell us anything

Well considering we already wrote an essay on why we should be moderators, it seems it would be a bit redundant to suggest ourselves.

hehe, but if you're sure of your own case, there's no harm in self-confidence ;)
I like that for instance mention you will use your mod abilities for editing tag-wiki's
while you can't right now

10:15 PM
It's a feature I would like :)

yes that would be a nice feature - to be able to work on and add any tag wiki...

@IvoFlipse, you might want to suggest to the team that they include a Q&A as an official part of the election process for future years.

well I guess they were planning on doing it, but they might as well have it as a part of the nomination

I think it's good to make people think about what they would actually do if they were moderators. I know answering your questions made me ponder in more detail some of the aspects, even though I already had a pretty good idea.

the fact that some of the users who nominated themselves haven't responded to my question, means they don't keep an eye out for meta
well for some users, it might not change anything, then you should wonder if you actually want to become one

10:18 PM
Haha, I remember thinking when I saw it, "Huh, that's weird... I wonder why he didn't tell us about this!". then a moment later, "wait, that's part of the test, isn't it! see if we even notice"

I was discussing it on chat, but off course we're not in the same time zone
and it is a good test :)
Joe won't pass it that's for sure

Joe hasn't even logged in since he submitted his nomination

I'm also worried by nominations who don't have much experience with actual moderating, like voting and flagging

I looked on his user profile. Last login: 2 days ago
I had seen you mention in chat that you were planning to post one at some point, but I must've missed your announcement or discussion of it being up live

how will they 'use' or 'abuse' their abilities, as a mod you no longer need peer review
but how do I know if you can be 'trusted' with the tools
or the other way around, what if we give you tools and you don't try to use them more than you currently do
if your workflow doesn't change, that might be worrying
especially those that can't edit certain things, I'd hope something changes :P

10:23 PM
All valid concerns. I think for us <10K users who've never had access to even the basic moderation tools, it's hard to tell what exactly we would be able to do with mod privileges. We see what the mods do, but we don't see what they're given behind the scenes. It would be even worse if a user hadn't any experience with closing, etc.
It would be nice if there were some sort of "a day in the life of a moderator" or something to that effect, showing us what tools are at their disposal (without revealing anything too super secret of course) and what sorts of things they're expected to do
While I personally think I have a decent understanding, from reading chat discussions and things on meta, I know I don't know it all, and I'm sure there are others who don't either, or maybe are even less familiar with it all
In other words, what i'm trying to say is, what is it we're getting into here? :P

hehe, well I can share some screenshots of the mod tools tomorrow, so you can get an idea
have you see the stat site they posted on MSO?

this?

A: Moderator nomination possibly useful statistics

Yi JiangAh right, the page Benjol was talking about in the comments is about finished. It pulls in a pretty impressive amount of information by using an obscene amount of API calls to the Stack Overflow API. It's all client-side, so please do not set it to auto-refresh every minute, or else it will eat t...

Yeah, I'm the one who suggested he add support for SU :P

well there you can see what kind of 'moderating' badges the nominees have
if you have none, you should be worried
if you have no Meta participation, you should be worried

I've been having a heck of a time getting that page to actually work
Ah, they have cached versions for all sites up now
goodie

so in your case, all you have to worry about is who else they will pick after @Sathya ;-)
since, I'd trust you with the mod tools any day

10:28 PM
why thanks :)
and yes, Sathya is sure to win. If he doesn't, I'm demanding a recount

but some of the others have to worry if they are ready for it
I hope that the nominees will make it easier for us to differentiate between the nominees and make the right decision
so you'd better be doing something special that other users like, and make sure they know they you're doing it
at least I know what most of you are up to though :)

Yeah. I feel like the involved users know who's who, but for the regular folks, we need some way to stand out.

besides @nhinkle, even if you don't get elected I'll help you edit the tag wiki's ;)
but I'd rather not be a middle man and let you do it yourself!

Haha, thanks :)

and now I need to go to bed

10:30 PM
Any ideas on how could I enable NumLock on boot on my ASUS X5DAF series notebook? It has a numpad.

Tom and I are going to work on community-faq sometime soon. I've too much work to do today though

tried pressing numlock? :P
I should be doing more work

@IvoFlipse Yes, but I don't want to do that on every boot.

Rest well, @IvoFlipse. See you soon.

and now more sleep, so see you tomorrow :)

10:31 PM
@Nyuszika7H, sometimes the BIOS has an option for that
if not, then you're pretty much out of luck

@nhinkle I'll take a look at that.
