@amWhy I see. Sorry to hear that weird things have been happening here without apparent cause. Anyway, I'm doing fine as usual, I guess. Hope you have a good rest this weekend too! How is your neck now? Hope there's less pain.

@SimplyBeautifulArt Can I ask you a question?

@SimplyBeautifulArt Can I talk to you here?

@SimplyBeautifulArt

@SimplyBeautifulArt Flag it as a sock puppet that is keeping the Physics Workstops chat-room alive.

Think I should bring this up in the math mod?
@user21820 No no, he's pinging me in the trash and stuff
Idk why and I don't want to find out.
Hm, I suppose I could flag the trash ones

I know that, but by putting the puppet away it will also stop pinging you each day.

@SimplyBeautifulArt Anyway isn't it your fault for talking about that user? =P

12:05 PM
Idk
:P

15 messages moved from CRUDE
grins.
Let's just talk about something else more interesting hahaha..

@user21820 ?
@user21820 true

Did Deedlit get back to you about either of our OCFs?

Say
Can we cheat the review queue?

user308168
Hello.

12:09 PM
Anyways

@SimplyBeautifulArt: Wow you were faster than me. Anyways.. =P

If we open the link to the post
and vote to close from there

I do that all the time.

does that not count to the review queue limit?

I can't stand the review queue forcing me to decide something without seeing all the questions and answers and comments.
It doesn't count to the review queue.

12:10 PM
Ah, okay...

There is a link to the post from the queue that you can open in a new tab.
It's what I do.

Yeah
Well, that means I can use up all of my close votes in the early morning?

Of course :P

Welp, too lazy
Should we kick him from CRUDE? @user21820

Link to main account?

Err, main account on chat, if that makes sense

He's from a currently suspended user

Yeah, I meant that account.

Though the math mods haven't really done anyting about him so far

The suspended account.

Thanks.

Have a transcript link where they directly admit it?

12:19 PM

I am that user.
@user21820 >.> Beating me to the cake

Yea. Yum yum.
Cake plus icing too.

@user21820 :( Sharing is caring

You can go to Math Meta and have some.

I has the sniffles
which means its the beginning of fall

@SimplyBeautifulArt Uh oh. Better drink and rest more.

Nah, its just the early morning each day
then it gets better until the next morning

So it's the cold air?

I believe so
I'm a cold blooded person :P

12:26 PM
eyes @SimplyBeautifulArt suspiciously ...please don't eat me.

Do you have heating in your room at night?

@Mithrandir o.o
@user21820 No lol

No wonder. How do you get through winter?

I live in a warm climate. We actually have the AC on in the evening

Oh not the US?

12:27 PM
In the US. I'm in Florida lol

Ah.
If it's too cold, I get a stuck nose.

Yeah
Its not really cold I guess. More like a quick temperature change

So how are things going on over there?

Everythings fine I guess

There's this idea that I had, and it turns out I'm not the only one: time.com/4595175/donald-trump-wall-florida.

12:31 PM
x'D

Wait a minute... That article was last Dec!!!
He had half a year to do something that would have probably mitigated the recent events by a lot...

Lol
Say
why do we have a (sequences-and-series) tag instead of splitting them into two tags?

@SimplyBeautifulArt Because mathematics syllabi often put them together?
I'd rather have them together anyway, otherwise you will get many series questions tagged as sequences too...

Ah, okay.
@user21820 True

That's what I don't like about the tagging system; it's messy and not systematic.

12:44 PM
@user21820 :P

It's better if each tag was actually a node in a fixed rooted tree of areas.

I think most people are "meh" about it.

Where each node is interpreted to contain all its child nodes.

Then people won't have to tag a whole chain of areas ordered by inclusion...

12:47 PM
I think that'd be a good idea
Closest thing to that is the whole "related tags" thing

That's been suggested, I think.

Well this method forces tagging to be systematic, so all posts that are under say topology that are tagged with some more specific topology tag will automatically show up under topology tag as well, since it would be an ancestor.

And then shot down.

@Mithrandir Not surprised. Good ideas are almost always discarded in favour of lousy ones.
At about the same rate as lousy ones in favour of good ones.

12:49 PM
SE is usually OK with things. Just with some things they aren't.

It's clear that is is not easy to implement.
It takes actual skill.

Are you saying that the SE developers don't actually have skill?

And it's too late.
When the system has already been designed and is running, it is definitely a big headache to change any deeply embedded part.
@Mithrandir More skill needed implies more time needed. SE developers will clearly go for a simple solution that works 50% of the time than a hard solution that takes 10 times as long to implement even if it works 90% of the time.
It's the same with most software anyway.
And SE is (for now) free. What can we expect?

Oh dear. I wonder how it would affect things if we had to pay SE

I guess my last point is the most important of all.

12:53 PM
I disagree that they'll always go for the easier solution.

@Mithrandir I didn't say that; I compared two solutions, one of which takes 10 times as much time and yet does not give 100% reliability.
Tagging will always be a mess due to human messiness.

@SimplyBeautifulArt well for one, I'd have a lot more free time :P

@Mithrandir :P

@Mithrandir Lol! Same here.

@user21820 yes. This. Humans are always the problem.

12:55 PM
Anyway I'll be off for now. See you both next time! =)

1 hour later…
2:14 PM
hi everyone

Hello and welcome!
Yea you're free to talk (almost) anything you like here. =)
It's probably better to keep my rants out of the CRUDE chat-room.
=)
@LeakyNun: I could give you examples of rubbish mathematics here. Remember 1+2+3+... = −1/12?

@user21820 what about it

A lot of people (including a rubbish Numberphile video) claim that it is true.
Worse still, not many people on Math SE are bold enough to point out that it is nonsense.
I'm one of the rare few who decry such stuff.
Also, if you really really want to see more of my rants:

Q: What to do about two erroneous answers to a post?

user21820[Edit: to explain some things that were not so clear in the original post] I believe in being straightforward. Without linking to the specific question, people will just treat this as another vague gripe with nothing to discuss. But to talk about the specific issues with a specific post is equiv...

This was quite some time back, but as you can see from the rubbish posts that pop up now and then (like this one; have you downvoted?) I don't think the problem is going away anytime soon.

@user21820 I have

Anyway there are three classes of problematic posts; one class is from cranks, one class is from those who post circular nonsense and then refuse to admit the error, and the final class is from those who make mistakes and readily fix them when pointed out. The last class is perfectly fine and I like to encourage them.

2:29 PM
@user21820 the second class don't even know that they're wrong

They often do, but are too proud to admit it.

>_>

I know of some mathematics professors who have committed logical errors but are too proud to admit they are wrong when I point it out. It's not hard to believe that many users here are the same.

$$\Huge\color{red}1\color{orange}+\color{yellow}2\color{green}+ \color{blue}\cdots=\color{purple}{-\dfrac1{12}}$$

Lol? It doesn't come out on my chat, because I don't use the chatjax script.

2:32 PM
oh nvm

Hello, @user21820 et al. o/

@amWhy: Hello! Nice to see you here. =)

=D

@amWhy: So how are things?
I think Martin is right about Math SE janitorial stuff being addictive. So many things to do, and so few hands to help.

2:47 PM
@user21820 Good. How about you?

Been busy with haha trying to clean Math SE up here and there.
Also been busy doing some research, as I should anyway..

@user21820 Yes, that's kind of two way street: the need is always there, for anyone who wants to help maintain the site. So... it's hard not to stop doing more!

At least now there are more hands. See, we have you, me, SBA, Did, Jack, Paramanand, and now Kenny.

@user21820 Good for you. Anything you want to comment on (briefly)?

Nothing in particular, if you've already downvoted those that I called "nonsense", then there's little else we can do right now.

2:53 PM
@user21820 No, I meant your research! (But yes, I've been keeping up with Crude, just temporarily had some duct tape gagging me for a few days! ;-)

3:04 PM
@amWhy My CS research is going fine, except my collaborators and I on our current project are not getting as nice theorems as we wanted.
Higher time complexity than we think is possible.
@amWhy And my personal project in creating a new formal system from scratch has once again met Mr Contradiction.

@user21820 Sounds challenging! And I'd love to hear more sometime!

@amWhy I would indeed be glad to hear feedback from people like @shredalert and you when I'm satisfied with my formal system. I want it to be as philosophically justifiable as possible, and that's a hard thing.

@user21820 Well, I'd be up for the task!

3:19 PM
@amWhy Well, to start with, I think it is natural and desirable to have a universal type.
We should really have an in-depth discussion in the Logic room some time, except now there's already a basic logic lesson going on...
@amWhy Lesson over! Come and join Kenny and I to discuss the meaning of "X is a doctor".

2 hours later…
5:32 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt I'm needing to ask you again, because my attempt to respond to a comment I made recently in CRUDE, but failed. So, apologies, but if you have the time, and patience, to help me run through the drill (for one to respond to one's own comment), I'd appreciate.

5:49 PM
@amWhy okie doke
You click the arrow next to a chat message and copy the permalink, then use the format :######## to reply to it, where the numbers are the last 8 numbers of the permalink.

I know about copying the #________ (from the post I want to respond to?). But how do I preface it?
Okay, I forgot to replace # with a colon! face-palm

I just realized, after success in Crude, that you actually do "ping" yourself... not just in responding to one's comment, but audio ping, too.

Well, maybe some night, after a stressful, exhausing day, if I come to MSE, I'll post a chat comment, and repeatedly respond to it, to keep awake! :P

5:57 PM
XP

1 hour later…
6:58 PM
Hahaha, here's another of those cases when the numbers all match up.

7:41 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt XD

8:19 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt Just don't turn into a numerology crank! :P (@Mithrandir this is entirely meant to be a joke/humor, in case you become alarmed.)

(don't worry. I usually recognize humor when I see it. Unless we're talking about something humorous, and then I get slightly boneheaded.)
