How do we retag this question?
2
Q: What are ways to figure out how old my computer is?

Ronny BrendelWhat are ways to figure out how old my computer is?

Other options include closing/deleting because I can't find a tag to host it under...
(Note, I'm only retagging questions with only one tag so they don't get untagged. Already made a meta Q for the burnination of that tag...)

I do like the one comment about carbon dating

12:46 AM
@Psycogeek: Why don't you just suggest to be able to follow wildcard tags just like we are able to have wildcard favorite tags at
The reason we combine these tags is such that we don't have people using meaningless tags like but let them pick a more specific one instead. That way we don't have to do all the extra tagging work. Because really, nobody consistently adds tags to every single question that enters the system...
Sad that that tag still exists, though.
But there are most likely better examples out there. It's the general idea that counts.

Q: How to make Apache return a custom page on a 400 error with malformed host headers?

William HilsumI need my server to have a custom 400 error page when it has a malformed host header in the request. What I ideally want is ErrorDocument 400 \somepage.php If I type an address such as http:\\myserver\bla%bla, the % causes Apache to return a 400 error and the above ErrorDocument works fine... H...

and... bed!

1:17 AM
@TomWijsman I did not know that existed. I also do not know if I could do that right now even. If anyone takes the time to read the information, do the math, or even run through the list of tags, they will see what i am talking about. On the other hand I would be 'ok" with choosing the crasy method, But that is not what occured, 1/2 the mess is from no method at all. The repeats are OFTEN the second method.

just to note, i'm doing the windows 8 USB to go install/boot method. If anyone else wants to do it, let me know, so i can save you the trouble of downloading all the tools you need seperately

@JourneymanGeek Uhm, only one ISO and one tool.

@TomWijsman: er.. i mean booting it off a USB ;p
which requires WAIK (1.8 gig install for a 471 kb file) ;p

Ah, booting it from a USB.
But still, does that really require WAIK?

It requires imagex off that according to the guide i'm using
since, yanno, i downloaded everything already, i can just sip up and dump the meg or so of tools you actually need in addition to windows 7 ;p

1:23 AM
Reverse that, and I think it is just as crasy that somone who wants to follow Windows XP , or Windows 8 , and Nothing else is stuck with "windows" whatever tag. Anyone can see the layout of the many forums on the web, could even get loose stats on the views , and what people like to return to or follow. Only on SU :-) is it set up these ways.

@JourneymanGeek: Can't you just install to it from the Windows Setup?

apparently not ;p
I didn't actually try that, TBH

Because you can attach a VHD, I think you could just assign a drive letter to an attached USB and refresh too.
Possible that it locks you out on USB though...

locks you out?

Not lists USB devices by intention.

1:27 AM
this is fairly simple, once you get the tools squared off
also needs to write down the windows 8 keyfor when i do the last part of the install

Yeah, true.

Q: How to install flash player Windows 7 64 bits?

DavidHow can I install flash player windows 7 64 bits? I've read the instructions and uninstall my old flash player with the uninstall tool but when I install the new player nothing happens and the browser plugin isn't installed? I've UAC disabled.

How do I install Flash on Windows 7 64-bit? I've UAC disabled These are the people that should have UAC enabled. :(

@TomWijsman I would have also pointed out what that does for searching. If i have a specific window 8 question , it is probably there when i search. but if i had a xp specific, the great "windows" tag wont be very handy. the search is useless :-) so i did not have to add that to my "book".

@Psycogeek: It's only a click away... Search , then click at the right side.

@TomWijsman you know that aint so, because that would have to be doubble taged

Ah, it doesn't do what I thought. But that could be asked at Meta.SO once again...

1:38 AM
how about + in there too?

There should be a separate button/link to combine them. So that you can just click to the tag...

@TomWijsman i will add it to the book :-)
I think the high rep and mod users are to smart to have to use the SU system :-)
I have the full coverage on the Flash for 64bit written, see if i can find it.

@Psycogeek: Nah... He is just installing the Flash Player for his computer instead of the one that adds itself to the browser.

hm for some reason it boots on my dell, but not the shared desktop

Turn it into a netboot. :D

It is strange to have linux as a favorite tag and have ubuntu questions excluded from this - is there a reason why these aren't heirachical?

@Paul nah, people try to arrive at some sorta hierarchy, but that's easier siad than done.

A: bootrec.exe as a bootable program for USB

Kathyyou also can try to download a bootrec.exe file to replace the old one here: http://www.fixdllexe.com/BootRec.exe-425295.html

morning all!
does that sound legit?

@Sathya Yes, it does (but I guess you're already found that by now).
@slhck I'd say kill it. While the actual download may look legit it's got a couple of those "fake" download links as well.

@tombull89 wasn't completely sure, but thanks for the confirmation!

@Sathya I need to check - i wasn't aware this computer had that
@Sathya: I got it running off USB this morning other than one major issue
(windows 8 on both counts)

@JourneymanGeek How well does Win 8 run from USB?

9:10 AM
@tombull89: dosen'r have uberfast boot
and installing my wifi driver seems to break it

@JourneymanGeek Well, it's running from USB so I woudln't expect it to be that quick - I'm planning to take a proper look over the weekend.

wierd thing is, it worked perfectly with the previous version of windows 8
@tombull89: let me know if you do - i could save you some time ;p

@JourneymanGeek do check and let me know - a friend of mine's running into problems getting it to run on Vbox

It works on vmware player for certain

yeah I'm running on VMWare player
I suspect it's a lack of VT-x that's causing problems for him, but he says the install starts fine

9:16 AM
VT-D you mean?
VT-X is for PCI passthrough iirc
ahh
this has vt-x

@JourneymanGeek VT-D, VT-x -whatever
VT-x implies VT-d?

i'm apparently confused

aww

@Sathya It is the other way around - vt-x is virtualisation support and in many processors, vt-d is directed io to virtual, which is rare beast - present in many processors but needs bios support. So vt-d implies vt-x in a machine (cpu+mobo) but vt-x in a machine doesn't imply vt-d

Pretty much the only reason you'd need a floppy drive in anything that runs a semi modern OS is for inserting drivers into xp (and you are better off slipstreaming drivers). @slhck how they decided that MSO would be a good place to ask.

That can't be an answer, can it?
@tombull89 Yeah, I don't get that either. The far end of the internet.

@slhck Technically "I don't know" would have been perfect as answer. :P But I think what he wrote could also work if he had provided an explanation.

@Bibhas … typical black swan problem. You can never know for sure it's not possible.
Although in the concrete situation, he might just be right :/

@slhck Yeah, considering the question, the answer can even be shorter.
remove "i think"

@slhck Duplicate question anyhow :P

Q: How to make Apache return a custom page on a 400 error with malformed host headers?

William HilsumI think what I was asking for was a bit hard to understand, so, I am trying to make it simpler... can anyone help :( Sorry for posting again!

@WilliamHilsum Still on that?

yeah... got so so much further now... but, it is a slightly different error now
I have a script that should work... but, I can't trigger it

2:50 PM
@WilliamHilsum Did you ever contact the manufacturer of the device?
Seems like their costing you a lot of time

@OliverSalzburg sort of... but, it is awkward... I just have to work with what I have been given!

@WilliamHilsum :(

3:17 PM
@OliverSalzburg well... I can't figure it out... even if there is a workaround somewhere (which I am certain there should be), it doesn't stop the fact that this isn't working with something that should be simple... so... I just made an Apache Bug report... only conclusion I can come to... issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=52859
just annoying - such a freak case!

@WilliamHilsum Just write a tiny socket app that can parse out the Hosts header, re-write it and then send it off to Apache.
Most likely a Perl-Oneliner
Then again, what isn't

I really wouldn't know how to - and - port 80 is already mapped to Apache... they already responsed as won't fix :( I am certain it is a bug...

@WilliamHilsum So make Apache use a different port. Or run the proxy on a different machine.
I understand the reasoning behind the wontfix btw
The input is malformed, so they bail instead of trying to do something that could produce issues.
I'd also have security concerns when working with input that has already been identified as malformed.

Q: Volume icon remain in the middle of screen

Syed Arif AliIpad 2 volume icon stuck in the middle of screen. Please advice

@WilliamHilsum I remember a colleague writing an HTTP proxy to fix some stupid behavior in Flash sockets. He wrote it in Perl and took him like 30 minutes.
Searching the web for "Perl HTTP proxy" brings up tons of results, like: stackoverflow.com/questions/273718/…
I'd be amazed if one wasn't able to puzzle together a fix for your issue with that stuff.
All you have to do is run a regex on each packet that runs through it. s/Host: http:\/\//Host: /g
Or something like that anyway ;D

4:08 PM
so, piss easy then! I'll be done in a few minutes :/

@Sathya If it were SU, that'd have made some sense maybe. MSU is a little too much. :D

Right now I am in the middle of centralizing printer control on one print server but as I mentioned earlier, we have all 3 OS's running (Win7 32/64bit and WinXP)
I can get the Windows 7 machines working fine but XP is having a tough time
The problem is this: we have a software that requires a hard coded path to a shared printer so that documents will be printed to that printer specifically. Since we have a mix of OS's, I can only get the Windows 7 x86/x64 drivers working 100% on one print server and I cannot get Win XP working with them

Good morning

If I use a separate print server (Win2003) for just XP drivers, that will cause problems with the hard coded path
Good afternoon

@qroberts :) Sounds like you have a good question for Super User

It's kind of a broad question though with multiple answers
For the time being I might just do a temporary fix and install the printers via IP on each machine manually
I will be back in a little bit, just received a shipment of monitors

6:08 PM
@Bibhas Oh wow... People from all over the world in here!

@Luke Of course. :)
So I couldn't find a template for my site that I like.
did this
Today was a holiday. put it to some use.

Is this a good place to ask a simple linux shell script question?

yo all

@studiohack yo

Say I have a text file with one column of data. I want to do something with each line. However there are cases where the line may have a string in the second column and I still want to do something with that 2nd string as I would a string in the first column. What's a quick awk line that would check for an existence of a second column string?
For that particular line.

@LordStryker Yeah, sure, you can post that here
Not sure if there are many awk experts in chat though ;)
So rather something for the main site

7:30 PM
Hello people!

hi! @iglvzx

@LordStryker Don't know awk. but logically speaking, you can split the line you just read using split(string, array, fieldsep) and check if array[2] exists.

I have a great answer for this question, but it is old and already accepted: superuser.com/questions/118025/…

hey @iglvzx, @Bibhas and @slhck :)

@slhck Hello
@studiohack Hey

7:33 PM
@studiohack Hi :)
@LordStryker checked out the split function here

@Bibhas you already "yo'ed" me ;P but hey again haha

g'day @studiohack!

@studiohack Too much of it aint bad. :P

@iglvzx HELLO YOU SINGLE PERSON!
@studiohack Intro2Mac! o_O

@studiohack Question 1: Mac or PC?

@Bibhas Introduction to Macintosh - college class
@iglvzx PC! still a Windows nerd, I'm half way through and yet still have yet to be convinced of the so called merits of a mac :P

@studiohack Hehe

@studiohack O_O What course! What college? Apple University of Technology? :P (sorry)

@Bibhas no, a small local community college

7:36 PM
@studiohack Still, odd subject. never heard anything like this.
:-/

@Bibhas it's just a computer class to teach people the basics of Mac computers

we had introduction to computing is first year
ohkay, nice. Do you have similar classes on linux? :)

@slhck @Bibhas I think I've figured out a quicker work around. There aren't very many lines that have a 2nd column string. I'll just push them down to a new line and force one column and iterate through that.

@LordStryker I think that'll require more effort than splitting it and process.

What happens if you @ reply Clippy?

7:38 PM
nothing pretty much.

@Bibhas Generally yes. But since I'm waiting on a script that iterates through a few thousand lines with a wait time inbetween (the database I'm calling can only do 3 calls a second), I'll just force everything into 1 column in the downtime :P

Ummm. N00b question. Clippy?

@Bibhas Type the following without quotes and filling in the rest: "I want to ..."
Clippy (from Microsoft Word) will pop up and try to be helpful

I want to check what clippy does.
No, thanks. :P
I want to have a cup of coffee.
Bad clippy. Y U NO Make coffee. :|

@studiohack You think this is better on webmasters? superuser.com/questions/398558/…

hmmm, yeah, I think so @slhck
I'll ask them - thanks! :)

@studiohack Cool, cheers :)
