12:10 AM
I had a dual boot, Windows 7 with Ubuntu. I uninstalled Ubuntu but the grub menu is still there at the start up screen, Is there any way to remove it? Or where should I ask?

You need to restore the Windows bootloader

How?

Q: How to remove UBUNTU partition and fix the Vista bootloader

markzzzI have a Laptop with Windows Vista 32 Home Edition and Ubuntu. I'd like to remove Ubuntu, but I'd also fix the vista bootloader, so i can Start it without any error :) How can I do it? Of course, i will fix the bootloader, and then remove the whole ubuntu partition and merge with another of win...

easybcd would do the trick easily

Thank you @SimonSheehan and @JourneymanGeek.

12:14 AM
@SimonSheehan: totally wasn't my fault it got there

@JourneymanGeek Only small hack in the installer. :)
The rest is all as native as can be.
Except you don't get the fast boot thing, but it's still faster than before... :D

lol
ugh, in that case i better wait till my assignments are done, since i use this box to run the VMs for it

Windows cannot find "EasyBCD" =\

@Gigili It's an external program.

12:19 AM
third party software, one moment

scroll down and click Download free for limited, non-commercial use

Huh, thank you.

12:57 AM
Meh... Now that I thought I got rid of the Flu, I catched one again today by going to school. Or, it perhaps got reactivated due to the weather.

Someone created two accounts with the same gravatar mail to answer his own question?

1:13 AM
@OliverSalzburg Note that both are Unregistered, he just placed the question using the no registration form and did the same for the answer.
The system normally merges those during a scheduled clean-up, if not we can still ask a moderator to do so.
This one shows some of the functionality that is currently in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

@TomWijsman Are you dual booting?

No, only Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Ahh okay

There is only one thing that annoys me.

@TomWijsman Ah, didn't notice. Thanks

1:19 AM
Somehow... My Metro apps are all German. :|
0
Q: Why are all my Metro applications in German? Can I change?

Tom WijsmanMy Metro applications on the Windows 8 Consumer Preview are all German. I've selected English (United States) and live in Belgium (and have selected that so), yet it somehow makes my Metro applications German while I didn't configure it at such. People in Belgium speak mainly Dutch and French, s...

There we go... Now hopefully Super User is so awesome that it can help solve this problem.

@TomWijsman Since I live in Germany, the German apps are to be expected in my version, I guess.

@OliverSalzburg I just find this very odd... If I download the English version, why would it give me German Metro applications when I live in a non-German country. :S
@OliverSalzburg: Hmm, noticed another odd thing. There is no PM on my lock screen behind the time.

1:36 AM
@TomWijsman I just noticed something interesting in the Windows 8 store.

Moment

I also run the English version of Windows 8, but the store is in German.
But when I change my active keyboard layout to ENG, the store is English as well.
The content still isn't though

Apparently, my custom keyboard lay-out has turned incompatible with Windows 8. So I have to re-learn some of the numeric/symbol keys... :(
Or, somehow get it fixed.
Okay, Metro apps are appearing English now.

I changed my number formats and location to US, now I have a very nice mix :D

Hmm, let's see if I can recreate that and turn it into English instead of Dutch...

1:40 AM
The application is name is in English, the categories are in German, the application names are in English and the settings are in German again :D
I wonder if it has something to do with the Windows Live account settings

@OliverSalzburg No, just figured out that under Languages you will want it to be English. Mine had NL or BE or something like that there, which broke it...
Gonna fiddle a bit with msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb964665, because I'm getting crazy not being able to type in my custom lay-out.
Right, Windows 8 Consumer Preview doesn't come pre-shipped with that?
I'm playing SU Jeopardy and having so much fun...

SU jeopardy?
reading answers and guessing the question? ;p

1:55 AM
No, answering my own questions within the minute, or something like that.
It's alive!

the frig?
its asking me for a install key

Yeah, it's listed on the page where you got the setup / ISO from.

@JourneymanGeek Consumer Preview?

Gonna sign off and on again, because my keyboard lay-out ain't loading. And it has an empty name, meh...

2:03 AM
I have to wait until tonight to download it overnight, or my brother will kill me :P

trying to ro run it on a VM

I'll also be downloading Microsoft Flight...

@studiohack: i had trouble DLing it with firefox, ended up using wget
I also have to reboot that computer, out of ram o0

Okay, that worked.

@TomWijsman: do you touchtype or did you rearrange keys to your liking?

2:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek I type without looking, they are rearranged to Dvorak but with the numeric and symbol keys like Azerty.

thats touchtyping

Yeah, indeed.
If you ever see a frog that doesn't look like a frog, run...

right, i have a VM using half the memory on my spare desktop ;p
and i can finally find an excuse to justify 16 GB of ram on a computer ;)

3:02 AM
@studiohack heh, downloaded it at work (@ uni) today... it took like 5 minutes. I'm thinking it might've already been cached by our squid server - I'm sure I wasn't the only one on campus downloading it

That looks kinda wrong. :D
Alright, installed the Visual Studio 11 Ultimate Beta instead of some Express version. Hopefully I don't have to install Visual Studio 10 side-by-side.
Okay, apparently it is a full-blown version and not something Metro only. Alright, now I only have to get used or have to get rid of the sad old color scheme.

@nhinkle lol

Hmm, I've installed both the Ultimate Beta and the Express Beta, hopefully removing the Express Beta now won't affect the Ultimate Beta. :/
Ah, works flawless.

3:50 AM
What to do about that? He couldn't post an extra link.
Hmm, we could ask him to leave that link into the comment perhaps.
Ah, only a single upvote removes the restriction, so I can ask him to just add it now. :)

@TomWijsman that works then :P

Stupid question, sorry. :(

pretty sure @danielbeck will be happy with this

Q: The future of meta.stackoverflow and meta.stackexchange

Jeff AtwoodHistorically this site, meta.stackoverflow, has been the place to ask questions about not just Stack Overflow, but the functioning of the entire Stack Exchange (2.0) network, including Area 51 and stackexchange.com and careers. > Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou imoatama!!! I could KISS you!! I have been searching how to do this for some time now!! I just did a copy and paste to my notepad. It worked! Quick and easy, to the point! Thanks again, Jenn - Jenn, not from the IT Crowd

lol

4:51 AM
NDAA will soon be in effect in the USA.
And it's fully operational...

5:07 AM
Totally going to dual-boot Win 8 on my laptop. Making an installer USB thumbdrive right now.
I prefer playing with an OS installed on the bare metal instead of a VM. Much more fun that way.
Unless it's an old, defunct OS. Then a VM is fine. :P

Indeed, VHD is still an option though if you don't care about the very fast booting (which I still have to test, by the way).
I'll probably have my jaw drop next time I boot... :D
Logging out and in some hours ago was also pretty fast.

Nah. I'm pretty comfortable with setting up a second partition :P
I've dual/triple/quad booted probably most of the time I've had a computer since college.
At one point I had Windows XP, Vista, and 7, as well as Ubuntu Linux installed concurrently on my desktop.

Well, there are occasions where shrinking a partition takes so long compared to just using the VHD method.

Dual booted Windows and Haiku before. That was actually pretty neat. :P

But anyway, I did some robocopying followed by a complete format of my whole SSD. And now I only have Windows 8 Consumer Preview at my disposal.
Could probably still boot from the VHD if I can somehow re-add the entry, but I don't think that's necessary.

5:13 AM
I think I'm the odd one in that I'm actually drooling over the changes that Microsoft made to Windows for version 8. Looks damn sexy to me. :P
35% done making the flash drive

Yeah, have used Windows 8 every single day since the Developer Preview came out so I'm really used to it. :)

Truthfully, I've been tired of the old taskbar/desktop/window chrome UI paradigm for nearly a decade, now. It's part of why I like playing with other operating systems. I like things that are different and esoteric, yet still functional.

I don't dislike anything...

It's also why I'm probably going to get a Macbook whenever this laptop dies. But that won't be for a few years, IMO.

The thing I hate about Macbooks is that for the same price you could get so much more with a laptop from other brands.

5:16 AM
Heh, all you have to do is look through the comments when a tech site posts about Windows 8 and while there's some who are open to it, there's too many decrying the changes as "dumbing down the desktop" and "shoehorning a tap-centric interface onto the desktop"

@TomWijsman I know. But for power usage I have my custom build desktop. My laptop is basically a work machine. I'm really only putting Win 8 on it so I can show it to my supervisor. He jumped ship to Mac when Vista came out, but has been intrigued by Win 8 lately.
Ideally, I'll be able to get it running on this thing so I can do my work on it. Right now I'm only using RDP and IE on it, anyway.
And Outlook, TweetDeck, etc.
So what's the .vhd setup like? It installs the new bootloader and drops everything into the .vhd file in your Windows 7 partition?
Sort of like Wubi?

@nhinkle @sathya thanks for the info. It's about time they saw reason

I'm actually tempted to do that method instead of partitioning, right now, as I think about it...

@sidran32 Basically you create a new VHD file (either in advance on your current installation or in the setup) and then just attach it in the installer, then as normal select that VHD space to install to and it does the rest. Scott Hanselman has a blog post on it.

5:21 AM
Ah nice
That's pretty simple

It's kinda like Wubi, you remove the entry from BCD (and/or set another one to the default, or make another partition the active one) and remove the file if you want to get rid of it. It's that simple...
No partition editing required, and the I/O is still as fast. Hybrid Boot (or how it's called) is only not available because it doesn't support VHD, but that's the only thing I found missing.

Ya

Actually it interferes with successfully running the whole Driver Verifier, but disabling some I/O related options and that works fine as well.

I used Wubi for a while. I'd be dual-booting Ubuntu with Wubi on my desktop right now, actually, but for whatever reason it fails to work. I'm wondering if it's because of RAID0...

But well, used VHD as I found it the easiest way to install it back then.
And I think I can actually still boot from that VHD if I want to...

5:24 AM
Hehe

I wonder if I can somehow hide the "System Reserved" partition.
But B: is basically the attached VHD that is located on P:, alongside a back-up of my home and root folder from Gentoo and my whole Windows 7 installation.

89%
Heh, Gentoo...

Copied 120 GB of my SSD (now C:) onto my hard drive for personal non-OS non-Programs stuff (P:).

I actually tried installing that once back in the day. The whole process confused me and I never was able to get a working install...
I even printed out and followed the 100 some-odd page installation instruction manual.

Worked for me every time, but even then you still have to be on your guard.
Easy to break everything if you don't know what exactly you are doing... :D
I once suddenly had no working base compiler anymore. :|

5:27 AM
I was more of a Linux noob at the time. :P
:o
I actually haven't tried installing it since. May or may not. Ubuntu has been easy enough for me when I did find cause to install Linux.

woof :p

Luckily the packages for the compiler stuff were still there, so installing them in the right order and calling one or another compiler configuration function or something like that worked finally.

I got gentoo working up until the point that i needed to recompile my kernel for X

The reason I took Gentoo is because I can keep it as small as I want.
Installed Xfce, Eclipse and some other development requirements on it; good enough for University.

5:29 AM
@TomWijsman I was surprised that they had a Gentoo LiveCD with the installer on it, yet they had no installation path that basically had you copy the whole LiveCD to the hard drive, like other distros do.
I suppose there would have been a manual way to do that, but if I knew enough to be able to, I might as well just have installed it proper :P

lol
they had one in 04
apparently didn't match their worldview

Hah. Ya, this was around '07.

my quadboot has gentoo
(and OS X and windows XP and 7 ;p)

:O I'd love a hackintosh but these days, getting one up and running is way too much work.

5:33 AM
I'd rather save the effort and buy a Mac.

I have more time than money i guess ;p

Like I said, next laptop will be a Macbook :P
Hehe
Well it won't happen now. It's basically whenever this thing dies. Which I expect to be a few years out.

Well, works in a VM but is pretty slow then. And indeed, outside of that it's hard and in most occasions just doesn't work.

I used one of the distros
everything but wifi works

I'd get an iMac but I have no where to put one.

5:35 AM
oh, and the mic is stuck on max, so unless i mute, it goes into a LOUD feedback loop

And I can't justify it either... dunno what I'd use it for.
At least I use a laptop regularly. So a Macbook makes more sense.

lol
I am on two computers right now
(laptop, and the dell)

I've been using my PS Vita for the past week more than my computers, after work. :P
It'd make a pretty nice tablet, actually. The hardware is really solid.
But it's not running a suitable OS for that, of course. :P

lol
i like my large screens and clacky qwerty keyboards ;p

:P
Since I moved the wireless router into the office from my bedroom, I no longer have blinking lights at the foot of my bed, and the wifi signal is much better in the rest of the house. :)

5:39 AM
lol

It's literally about as close to the center of the house as you can get, without rearranging the office completely. But all that to move it about 12 inches isn't worth it. :P
USB key finished
I'm gonna reboot and try this installation thingy

@TomWijsman just take off the drive letter
Go to diskmgmt.msc, find the drive, right-click, add/change drive letters, take it away. Voila, doesn't show up.

bbl
That was hasty.
It's late and if I install it now, I will be playing with it for a few more hours before going to sleep. Also, I forgot my prep steps. Mainly, writing down the license key and preparing a partition. XD
Goodnight all
Will do this tomorrow

@nhinkle Feel free to answer this question. Thanks, that was simple... :)

Haven't seen Windows 8 Consumer Preview yet? Screenshot extravaganza.

@TomWijsman Looks like a brand-new user beat me to it

@nhinkle Whoa, well... FGTW.
@nhinkle Meh, I was changing the formatting there! :P

@TomWijsman bah, you beat me to the fixes >_<

Well, applied my fixes and brought over the ones from nhinkle now.
But yeah, two of us beat you. :P

6:04 AM
@TomWijsman FEITW?

Ah, I missed the I. But yeah, three editors wanting to edit the same post simultaneously, definitely an overkill.

Good one.

Q: NYC area users - join us to celebrate Steve Jobs' Birthday!

LaurenCome join Ask Different and Dr. Brendan for a party to honor Steve Jobs on his birthday. The party will start around 3 pm EST, and will take place outside the flagship Apple Store in NYC (59th Street and Fifth Avenue). There will be black turtlenecks, cupcakes, and dancers. For more information...

I'd say "no comment", but then I already commented on it.
I think I need to revise my opinion on Apple.SE.

I sure am glad it exists, otherwise they'd "promote" our site like this.

lol
we don't need no promotion ;p

oh wow.

@JourneymanGeek Then again, that might be the whole point. Apple.SE is so successful that they need to piss off their target audience (people who might take Apple a bit too serious), so their servers don't go down due to heavy load.

6:38 AM
lol
Like what happened with the razzie pi? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Totally forgot about that, shit.

> There will be black turtlenecks, cupcakes, and dancers. For more information, see this New York Post article
excuse me? (my emphasis)

@DanielBeck: wait a month, and you can order it off RS or element13/farnell
which is awesome since i can tack it on with another order i need to do

@Sathya If anybody were there, the Twitter feed would show more than pictures of balloons in front of the store.
@Sathya I really hope it was dancers or the non-exotic kind.

@DanielBeck: rocking like Steven Hawking? ;p

6:47 AM
@DanielBeck goes to check

as @DanielBeck mentioned, bunch of balloons and this
#FF @dr_brendan - one stop shop for Apple repairs!

>_>
seems a bit... um

I'm surprised there's not much of a backlash
@JourneymanGeek if you think that's bad, check out the balloons

@RebeccaChernoff Please don't use Bill Gates' (or anybody's) birthday once they're dead as an excuse to promote SU. Thanks.

6:52 AM
....

@Sathya Meta.Apple is pretty dead, no big surprise there.

@Sathya: cripes

that is rather...

I can't find the right word

6:56 AM
I can find too many ;p

I'd post it to MSO and petition to kick the guy out, but I'm pretty sure it'd get closed for no good reason.
Like, "community has no say in who promotes the community, and how".

I think it'll get kicked back to Apple meta where it'll languish..

I know now how to easily recognize "community managers" on SE.
3
Dozens of accounts, most of them at 101 rep, never above 1000.
6

lol
@DanielBeck: I have 14, and no clue how i got some of them ;p
and my apple.se rep makes no sense

@JourneymanGeek Note that "14" aren't "dozens".

7:10 AM
+113, one answer, downvoted twice

I also have 13 accounts and haven't posted using half of them, it happens. But check out these "community managers", it's ridiculous.
@JourneymanGeek Check /reputation and recalc.

ahh
two upvotes, 4 downvotes, 1 rep for newbieness
makes sense now ;p

@JourneymanGeek I see the 1 rep for newbieness is well deserved :P

Ah, booting is amazingly fast.

lol
Not really an apple guy ;p
though i eventually want to be decent at OS X at well ;p

7:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek :P

@Sathya Can mods see comment flags or are they only done automatically by multiple flaggers? I flagged some comments that are rude / offensive / obsolete, all the same user that is trying to drive through a stand point in almost all the comment threads on a particular question.

7:41 AM
@TomWijsman any flag gets shown to us

Alright, thought so. But with all those automatic systems in place you'd never know...

@Sathya its the one major OS i don't have easy access to. I even have a solaris 10 dvd somewhere

8:34 AM
And so the Windows 8 CP questions have started...

9:31 AM
... let the downvoting commence.

Q: Please don't exploit the memory of the deceased to promote the network

Daniel BeckTL;DR: Please don't exploit the memory of the deceased to promote the network. That's really all I have. The following is a description of what happens a week ago. Steve Jobs died in October. He would have turned 57 a week ago. A few CHAOS members used this opportunity to promote Ask Diffe...

@DanielBeck Have an upboat to start you off. In my opinion, that's slighty poor taste.
Up to +5.

@tombull89 Thank you.

+1 from me
@DanielBeck did you delete your comment?

10:40 AM
@TomWijsman any idea where I can get my hands on a snappy Windows 8 tablet? :P

@IvoFlipse Try an Asus EEE T91 - can flip the screen around and use it as a tablet.
I don't know if any Win 8 tablets have been announced yet.

@Sathya Yes. I thought with the additional MSO exposure, it was no longer relevant, and not very constructive anyway.

That "ultimate_finalizer" task in the Visual Studio 11 Beta installer has been running for an hour now. I wonder if that is intended...

@DanielBeck +1 from me as well, that's ridiculous par excellence

@slhck that edit chain got me to chuckle

@Raystafarian He could at least admit he was wrong the first time he did it

ah the more I look at it the more I chuckle, that's like.. sketch worthy

This kino character strikes me as a minor

1:17 PM
lol

I'm sorry, but I get the feeling he's trying to be annoying just for the sake of it.

Has kinokijuf been resuspended yet?

I'm still trying to figure out if he's correct about that forward/backward thing :D

@OliverSalzburg In the last sentence he wasn't wrong, but his first title was wrong. His second title change was not changing the meaning.
Regardless, bitching around and being so insistant is ridiculous, when you could just change the title to something else.

sometimes I feel like I'm the annoying guy, but then I see his meta threads and edit chains and I feel better..

1:27 PM
@Raystafarian Your edits are substantial enough, I don't see any reason to complain.

I'm glad

Also, I instantly knew this was going to be upvoted like crazy.

Some questions I see on SU are things I've never even fathomed, and I find them very interesting

@slhck And that's why I randomly check his cross-site activity through out the day.

@TomWijsman … so what's it like?

1:32 PM
Just so I can jump in, it's like you guys know him, I guess...

Sure

1:44 PM
it's so not funny, can I get a few delete votes?

A: Are Hackintosh questions off topic because of community consensus or just moderation policy?

kinokijufI think they should be allowed. The reason is that with each Mac^H^H^HApple-branded PC/AT compatible there come two (2) apple stickers that allow you to apple-brand any hardware you own, thus allowing you to install OSX on it.

@slhck One of those days I want to be a 10k+ user :P
@slhck superuser.com/posts/322495/revisions <Insert rage comic here>

@SimonSheehan Yeah.. I'm still laughing about the ^H joke. Made my day.
not

@slhck I rolled back again just to bug him :p
So today is a "snow day" at my school - meaning 2 buses get cancelled so nobody shows up
Gonna get back to my essay now... im one of 6 people in my class.
Have a nice day super users :P

haha, have fun @SimonSheehan

Okay, here you are again. Another computer from another (self-proclaimed) client for you to fix. So, let’s boot this thing and see what’s wrong with it this time. Okay, first obstacle; logging into the client’s user account. Now for me, repairs would usually pause here while I’m waiting for the moment I can get a hold of my client and ask him or her for the correct password. Annoying…

Now of course I could use fairly established tools such as Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor (also known as ntpasswd for you geeks out there) or Ophcrack. But for multiple reasons, those tools just don’t seem to cut it for me. …

6:05 PM
Hi everyone

Any Excel experts have a second for a question?

6:33 PM
@DanielBeck Hello

@iglvzx Hi!

@DanielBeck How are you?

@iglvzx I'm fine. Dealing with the results of my whinery on MSO right now ;)

@DanielBeck Ha. We had a rough morning on campus today. I work with the IT department, and our wired network went down. Wireless was fine. The issue was one of our routers decided to rebel and off itself
I do not think this question is a duplicate:
5
Q: Is flash storage affected by magnetic fields?

David OneillI have several SD cards and USB flash drives that are often laying around my work space. Do I have to be careful to keep magnets away from them? (This paranoia is showing my age - I remember needing to make sure magnets never got near my precious 3.5 inch floppies...)

@iglvzx @DanielBeck Good day.

6:44 PM
@Borisyo Hello

Guys how do you open these packages and what is the most correct method of doing this?
These are not boxes that you can open and keep which can come in handy who knows when.

@Borisyo with heavy duty scissors:

@iglvzx Oh crap. Let me guess, tons of whiny users keep you from fixing it?
@Boris_yo Good evening

@iglvzx I guess manufacturers save on boxes and use these that are hard to open?

@DanielBeck Professors are the most whiny people when something is not working
@Borisyo It could be that the plastic packages save space, are cheaper to make, help with stopping theft. I'm not sure. I just know that if you don't have the right scissors or tool to open them, it is a pain.
@Borisyo I hope you got my humor with the picture. :P

7:02 PM
@iglvzx There are fewer of them at least ;)

@DanielBeck Yes. That helps. :P

@iglvzx It's probably safe to assume the students just used the wireless instead?

@DanielBeck Well, the issue arose in the early morning, so not many students had to deal with it. But yeah, most students use their own laptops

@iglvzx What, you mean there are students in the early morning? What kind of campus is this?

7:20 PM
On Windows 8 Consumer Preview? Hit Windows + X right now. Oh yeah...

@TomWijsman What happens?

That appears in the bottom left, so handy.

Nice

7:37 PM
@TomWijsman Looks like what a basic launcher should do.
But still nice. Most users have no idea how to reach places quickly.

@DanielBeck Just read your post on Meta.SO about the whole Apple, NYC party thing. What a mess.

@iglvzx It's being handled.

7:55 PM
Anyone know how to change the default entry point into an application in VS 11 (for a c++ application)?

@soandos You might get a quicker response in this StackOverflow chat room: chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/10/loungec

@soandos You mean main?

I have main in the file
and it insists on looking in other files first, and saying it cannot find the entry point

@TomWijsman Good meta topic by the way. The first Google results page is horrible. 5 duplicates, at least.
Oh yeah 1337 rep on MSO!

8:11 PM
Finally home. None of my classes had more than 3 people in it
