5:40 AM
pardon the intrusion, I was wondering if this is a good place to discuss spam on your site
I'll sit here for a few hours and hope somebody joins me here eventually ...

1 hour later…
6:53 AM
@tripleee welcome, as good a place as any I suppose. Unless you want to make it 'official', in that case head on over to Meta

thanks, just observing from Charcoal HQ (where we work to remove spam) that spam deletion times on Graphics Design are longer than on many other sites, at least by my subjective judgment
so I'm wondering what could be done about that
an interesting observation is that Apple and GD tend to get spammed in tandem
and then the Apple post is removed much quicker than the GD one
which suggests that you might want to improve spam visibility and awareness ... somehow

hah, 'improve spam visibility' is a maybe not the best choice of words :D
but joking aside, you are correct I think
Although most spam is killed automatically before I can even flag it, so the system usually works

sure it works, just that half a dozen more people who flag spam when it arrives would do wonders for removing it even faster

as I said, I usually can't flag it, even if it's brand new and I click on it immediately
it's gone too fast

some sites have Smoke Detector post notices in their chat room but maybe that would be disruptive here
Smoke Detector is the main bot in Charcoal HQ

7:06 AM
hmm, usually not many in chat anyway. The mods and some regulars. Most of the time it's two or three people.

so how about some education reach-out on your meta? do people downvote rather than flag as spam and can we change that?

I have no idea whether people downvote or flag.
Maybe the mods will have a better idea

thanks for responding, I'll hang around for a bit more and see if a mod would turn up
@PieBie making spam more visible for everyone is probably not ideal, no. but those who do care and want to act might benefit from having a place where they get notified when there is a problem

1 hour later…
8:22 AM
hehe, got it :p

oh good! I guess yours was the deleting spam flag

probs, it was at five already

downvotes != spam flags

true, but the other way around is true yes?

8:43 AM
spam flag === downvote

9:11 AM
I think the first spam flag produces a downvote also but after that, it doesn't seem to
I can downvote separately after flagging something as spam, too

ah, I thought every spam flag was also a downvote

9:41 AM
ha my motor arrived

3 hours later…
12:29 PM
hey @Vincent: you're a busy man today it would seem

1:03 PM
@PieBie don't get me started about it :D

ok, if you haven't got the time, feel free to ignore us ;)

hehe, I wasn;t about to :)
just a lot of outdoor jobs these days. I teach a lot of courses

1:41 PM
like literally outdoors? or just out-of-office?

out of office
I teach class at a place connected to the local University. It's in the city centre
And I have nine hours of course there this week

nice! you like teaching?

I do. I've been doing it for soem 8 years now and by now it comes naturally
How are you? Also lots of work?

1:57 PM
good for you, I like people who like teaching
I'm good! very busy
lots of small stuff I need to do

ah, that's nice. Lots of small endorphin shots, one very time you finish something :D

nah, I don't like the small stuff. They take too much of my time proportionally, and they're usually stupid little things...
I prefer two solid days of coding one single thing, instead of two hour chunks of bugfixes...

hehe, autist much? :P

hah! maybe a bit

But I understand that as well
the big endorphin shot is so much better than all those small ones

2:24 PM
I'd love it if there was someone on my team who could fix all the small mean bugs in my code so I could focus on the big things :D

2:53 PM
Heh, I know that feeling. I hate bugfixing

I hate it especially when my code works perfectly everywhere, except on the iPad. I think about 30% of my time is bug fixing specifically for iPad.
Apple always seems to have their own way of doing things. Safari for iPad doesn't even follow the canvas standard. A standard Apple invented!

3:16 PM
Unfortunately, I know all about it :(

4:00 PM
@tripleee Hi, I'm one of the moderators on GD.SE. Do you have any sort of numbers beyond your subjective judgement that you could show us? It may simply be we have less traffic than the other sites in question but hard to know without seeing numbers. Our Spam gets deleted fairly fast from what I've seen but that of course is relative.
And I'm not sure how your system works at all but I often will Destroy the Spam user on the spot before the post is even flagged or downvoted a single time. If me, or another mod ( @Vincent @JohnB @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ ) instantly destroys the account does that even show up on your end?
you may only be seeing the ones we aren't awake and around for which would of course be the slower ones

I have to agree on what @Ryan says there, @tripleee. Our active community is not that big, and not that ever-present.
How are you, @Ryan? Ready for your trip?

very busy. Im ready for the family trip this week. Thats easy. The work trip next week is another issue entirely :D
trying to come up with a presentation method. OpenOffice Impress has issues with video from what I'm seeing so looking to make a simple HTML5 presentation that can work offline and I'll just click through as though its a powerpoint style presentation
I used to make all of my presentations in Flash as .SWF files but that's not really an option these days
how are you?

4:22 PM
@Ryan that's prehistorics :)
I'm good. Pretty much busy with courses and some nice logo and print work
trying to arrange to be off from work for most of May, when the bf is also home

4:44 PM
is he not usually home?

as in, fulltime
he lost his job and has some six weeks off before the next (probably) starts

oh sorry he lost his job but pretty nice he already got a new one

yeah. We were concerned about him losing it all of half a day

@tripleee while SE is a community ran initiative are these times determined by your opinion or do you have a matrix to indicate that we have a slow turnaround? While we do have a broader scope than most sites just simply blowing away spam by a subjective spam detection that, if I recall, is run as a side project and not actually ran by SE tends to be biased, no? Also, we must take great consideration verses what is spam and what isn't since our scope is so broad. So what exactly is your goal?
The only times I am aware that may tend to be slower is on the weekends as we do tend to try and have a life beyond the site but if a question is flagged as spam we typically take care of it. So I'm somewhat confused in your objective. Are you just trying to increase our turnaround times or are you questioning if people know about your spam project?
and excuse me I didn't say hello

5:04 PM
we're so angry now @DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ :P

rar
how have you been @Vincent?
