@Hennes ...meaning not crappy bottom-bin SSDs like the Crucial BX200.
But any decent name-brand consumer-level SSD with reasonable performance and endurance specs will do.

Bob
@allquixotic Still like Quassel?
I'm still on ZNC :P

So, there's lots to learn. I'm hoping to catch up with you folks and learn to do some serious enterprise stuff.
This will be fun... :-)
Creating the Hyper-V VM...

@bwDraco I got a BX200.... And I can confirm it is crap

Bob
@Dog Ya, that's why I ask people for a summary :P

Jan 10 at 8:18, by bwDraco
PCWorld gave the Crucial BX200 a scathing review: http://www.pcworld.com/article/3000913/storage/crucial-bx200-ssd-review-good-for‌-casual-users-but-not-for-slinging-extra-large-files.html

Bob
12:07 AM
@allquixotic So... I did that specifically to avoid grub.
grub is on my diaf list

it works, it is cheap. And it does its job about as well as a HDD but is more epxensive and makes less sound

@bwDraco what's there to be left out about? I wanted the flexibility, and it was cost-competitive

I origianlly got that BX200 to replace rotating rust in an Atom laptop which probably would get used once per 2 or once per 3 months.

and rofl.
I have king dian ssds on 2 systems

I would just spend the few extra dollars on 850 EVOs.

12:10 AM
M.2 NVME SSDs seem nice these days.
If I get another one I will consider a 960

I have another box with a 750.

To bad skylake i5/i7's have so few PCI-e lanes. 4 M.2 sockets on a motherboard would have been nice. Instead I am stuck with a mere 2

I just wanted non spinning rust storage

Intel 750 ?

no, samsung...
their low end model

12:11 AM
Samsung SSD 750 EVO?
The 830 is a very, very old drive.

My current desktop uses an Samsung SM951 - NVMe - 512GB.

@bwDraco my previous laptop has the 830 (non pro) from my desktop

How large should I set the disks? Two 32GB vDisks on the hard drive, 16GB on the SSD?

It is the fastest I have

12:13 AM
No NVMe till the next build

850 PRO on the main laptop. 850 EVO in an enclosure.

Well, new laptop does NVMe
but its roughly as moddable as a mac

New desktop is expected to get a 960 PRO (as expensive as it may be).

Those can max out PCI-e x4
Time for a newer, faster, shinier, even whiter bus.
Though atm I will settle for a lot slower 4TB SSD to replace the HDD which spins up every 5 minutes
Meanwhile, in the catagory "My, that escalated quicky" :
I considered it. Its small enough and text only. I assumed it was within limits

It's a bit of a gray area.

12:26 AM
Might be best to put it behind a link with an NSFW mark

@BenN I'd agree with this.

Hmm, 15 minutes.

Looking back...

Effective immediately, I'm going to be making major changes aimed at addressing self-control issues that have repeatedly cropped in this chat room. My focus will be on being a calm and stoic person at all times, never losing control of myself, so that I can always act in a constructive and controlled manner even under the difficult conditions. I will not let anything like this happen again.
While there are still issues to be addressed, I am honestly amazed to see how far I've come.
Okay, kinda got distracted. Downloading Ubuntu Server 16.04.1 LTS...

@allquixotic: Hyper-V machine generation: Use Generation 1 (legacy BIOS) or Generation 2 (UEFI)?
Four virtual disks: 16 GB on the SSD for boot, 2x32 GB on the hard drive for the main zpool, and 16 GB on the SSD for the SLOG/L2ARC.

Modern Ubuntu supports G2, so I'd go with that

an hour later, managed to get them using a box wrench, a socket ratchet, some WD-40, and some patience

@allquixotic And now your full name is revealed ...
2

It's been shown on things linked here before

@BenN That's all right then I suppose (I hadn't noticed). I already knew his name and wasn't sure whether it was public.

Bob
2:06 AM
@allquixotic a dremel would've worked too :P
actually, maybe even a strap wrench
they work pretty well when you can't easily get a normal wrench in

I'm still rather distracted. Memory ballooning enabled; 16 GB memory at startup but may drop as low as 2 GB.

2:40 AM
@Bob bit tight unless you had a flexyshaft

Oy vey. I'm going through these candies at such an absurd rate that I'm evaluating ordering them in bulk.
Oct 25 at 0:05, by bwDraco
Onto another topic: I'm seeing a lot of recommendations against giving kids Werther's Original hard candies for Halloween; is it really that bad? I personally go through them dozens at a time the few times I have a bag of these candies to myself.
However, I'm not sure if my mom will like my ordering more than 4 lbs of candy like this, even at this price...
I guess I'll order when my current batch is exhausted.
It's just not worth spending so much money at the drugstore when a better deal can be had online.
I'm going to try to cut back a bit.
I'm probably not the only one addicted to Werther's Original...
It takes me three days or less to go through a 5.5 oz bag (the usual retail size).
A trash bag full of candy wrappers is not going to amuse Mother.
VM starting up...
Memory ballooning works as designed :)

First time I'm working with the Ubuntu text-mode partition editor. It's rather simplistic and nowhere near as good as YaST's partitioner but seems to have all the options I expect.
I have to manually configure the UEFI System Partition :\
I like how the installer gives me a red background on an error :P

Dog
@allquixotic Ooh 60fps

(the background is normally Canonical aubergine)
(GIMP color picker says it's #762671, which is probably as close as technically possible in a text-mode environment to the #772953 specified for Canonical aubergine)
...the EFI System Partition is too small. Reconfiguring...
Ubuntu claims it needs to be at least 35 MB but that's likely not enough.

While core gamers likely account for a disproportionate amount of revenue in the industry, the majority of revenue still comes from casual gamers, primarily in the form of microtransactions.
Mar 21 at 4:10, by bwDraco
While the number of gamers spending more than a few dollars on microtransactions is quite small, they tend to be willing to spend far, far more than a typical core gamer would.

VICTORY!!!!
100% working, non-leaking faucet saves $5 - $10 per month in water bill.... it'll pay for itself in short order

Got distracted. Hopefully, I can get back to the VM in a few moments.
@allquixotic lol

been working on the project for 5-6 hours

4:22 AM
@Dog Pokémon GO is definitely responsible for a significant portion of this.

@allquixotic heh. That makes three of us doing our own plumbing XD

Father can do most simple plumbing fixes, but we call a pro for anything complex.

My dad's an engineer in the "trust me, I'm an engineer" sort of way
So he knows what to use, but not what its called

I spent half of last night playing with a friend's absurdly hyperactive pug...
Fur. Fur everywhere.

Pugs are short coated no?

Bob
5:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek Apparently they (that one...) shed a lot
> The breed is notorious for shedding quite heavily
-_-
> As mentioned in our Pug FAQ’s section, Pugs shed a lot. In fact, they shed more than a lot. They shed tons. If you read or hear anything to the contrary, you’re either getting misinformation, or the input of someone whose Pug is a rare exception to the norm. If you get a Pug, you’ll have fur all over the place. On every piece of furniture, on all your clothes and in your car. You don’t even have to put your Pug in the car, the fur will just be there…and everywhere else. If this is at all a concern to you, don’t get a Pug.

@Bob: Installation of Ubuntu Server on my Hyper-V instance is getting stuck at "Retrieving file". Any ideas?

@Bob we'll never own a snub nosed dog anyway

Hmm. How do I view network activity on a Hyper-V VM?

This is the closest I've ever come to falling for a Gmail phishing attack. If it hadn't been for my high-DPI screen… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/812265182646927361

Could be some network adapter fussiness...
...and I'm seeing progress.
Okay, I'm able to ping 8.8.4.4 from the VM. What's going on?
...installation is complete.
The host machine just BSODed in the network driver.
Must be an issue with the virtual switch or network adapter...
The Hyper-V vSwitch needs to go die in a fire.

I've had all sorts of issues with the Hyper-V virtual switch in the past. Be prepared to have to remove and recreate it once in a while.
The Hyper-V Generation 2 network adapter is utter crap. I don't get the same issues with a Gen 1 instance.
Opening an HTTP connection takes ages.
I have pulled the plug on the instance.
Recreating the VM as Generation 1...

Sorry, not familiar with OpenWRT.
...and I've run into trouble. My VM has no IPv6 connectivity, but the host does. Help?
IPv4 works but (by design) the system tries IPv6 first and gets stuck.

@bwDraco disable ipv6

How?

Er. /Etc/networks/interfaces?

Commented out the IPv6 interface.

7:04 AM
If it's just apt, there's a way to do that too. Apt dosen't get along with ipv6

Wow. I'm just not familiar with Linux text config files.
@JourneymanGeek Pings to IPv6 addresses fail.
No problems with IPv4.
Reset network interface.
apt-get refuses to use IPv4.
Hmm. DHCP issues?
My mistake. Have to use ping6.
Pings to IPv6 addresses still fail.
Host machine has no trouble pinging IPv6 addresses.
IPv6 disabled. Networking is functioning normally \o/

Q: Convince apt-get *not* to use IPv6 method

ShadurThe ISP I work at is setting up an internal IPv6 network in preparation for eventually connecting to the IPv6 internet. @JourneymanGeek As I said, this is not isolated to apt-get.
6 mins ago, by bwDraco
Pings to IPv6 addresses still fail.
Updating...
New kernel, server will be rebooted.

Yeah, but its worth knowing you can do that with with apt, since apt has issues even if you have proper ipv6 support a lot of the time.
@Freedo You really ought to work out what exactly you want to ask, and ask it on the appropriate Q&A site

7:21 AM
I am not familiar with apt-get. Packages "kept back"?
I suspect this is similar to zypper "locking" packages (manually blocking installation or removal), but how to I lift the lock in apt-get?

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

A: What is "dist-upgrade" and why does it upgrade more than "upgrade"?

Maybe I should play with Arch Linux and learn to get used to editing config files?

yes @bwDraco
It's very nice
I recently switched to it

I tend to disagree
But my philosophy is very much "I can't be arsed spending 2 days installing a system"

Arch is fancy and not exactly stable
Says the person who has gentoo installed :P

I ran Gentoo several years ago but grew tired of constantly recompiling software.

have valve made any announcements on the reasons for the downtime?
it also highlights a fundamental issue with the current model of gaming platforms
if valve chucks in the towel and decides to turn everything off, we lose all the games in our libraries
yes i have physical copies of HL2 and doom3 but the newer games and especially the indie games not associated with publishing houses are gone
i don't have a solution but i thought i'd mention it in case someone wanted to discuss it

@Burgi Well, its the single point of failure
and DRM in general

yeah, i have a few games backedup with GOG but very few

I mean, the big issue is really, you can't turn on steam offline that easily and most DRMish things is tied into that

after 60 days the offline key expires and you need to re connect for a fresh key

2:40 PM
and, in the UK at least, most mobile operators prevent access to steam at a network level

ola. Yet another app
"and, in the UK at least, most mobile operators prevent access to steam at a network level" whaaaat?

yup yup
i speak from experience

Yeah, that would be painful
But really, the assumption is valve won't close down (any time soon)

i'll admit it was about 3 years ago

of course, there's other stuff that would break
like gamespy taking out network game options
But that's a problem of any cloudy service

2:46 PM
i wonder if it needs legislation like other entertainment forms
the original grid is free

eww, legislation
and not sure how it would help

somehow allowing you to make physical copies of games
for back up
you can do it for films and music CDs
of course the online services would no longer work

the thing that blizzard are doing with their fans so they can run a vanilla original WOW server is interesting
maybe we need legislation to compel games producers to release the serverside code for their games after they decide to no longer support them
this is the only real work around: gog.com/connect

or just make it legal to reverse engineer them

3:03 PM
that would be handy
